My stay at The Springs was a nightmare. The facility is severely understaffed and the staff they…read morehad was, to say the least, unprofessional. There were times that I would wait over an hour for pain medication. The food was awful, mostly carbs and very little protein. They also lost several items of clothing in the laundry.

I'm sharing this because families deserve to know the truth about the systemic failures and…read morefinancial incentives that can compromise the care of their loved ones. My mother, Joanne Geraci, passed away on December 6, 2024, after being failed by both Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) and Monarch Landing Skilled Nursing Facility. We were assured that my mom, who was non-ambulatory, oxygen-dependent, and required assistance with basic needs, was being transferred from CDH to Monarch Landing for rehabilitation--not hospice or end-of-life care. This assurance gave us hope, but it soon became clear that this transfer was less about her recovery and more about financial and logistical incentives for both institutions. Here's What Happened: 1. CDH's Role: * My mom was discharged from CDH in critical condition despite being on flagged medication (morphine sulfate) that exceeded safe dosing guidelines due to her renal impairment. This medication likely masked her true condition, enabling her transfer. * CDH presented the transfer as a step toward rehabilitation, but they failed to communicate or execute a clear care plan. It feels like they prioritized clearing her from their facility over ensuring her safety. 2. Monarch Landing's Role: * Monarch Landing accepted her transfer despite lacking the resources to care for someone in her condition. She was placed in a room without basic safety measures like bed alarms or guard rails. * Within hours of arriving, my mom was found face-up, naked, and unresponsive on the floor of her room, without her oxygen cannula. 3. Financial Incentives Over Care: * Skilled nursing facilities like Monarch Landing have financial incentives to accept patients like my mom under Medicare reimbursement programs. However, they are not required to prove they can meet the patient's specific needs, creating a dangerous gap in care. * CDH likely benefited financially by discharging my mom to a subacute facility rather than keeping her in the hospital to stabilize further or await the delivery of her prescribed Tyvaso therapy. Why This Matters: My family was misled by both institutions. We trusted that my mom would receive care focused on her recovery and dignity. Instead, she was sent into a situation where her needs were ignored, and she died in undignified and preventable circumstances. If your loved one is a patient at CDH or being considered for transfer to Monarch Landing: * Demand clarity about their care plan and condition. Don't allow vague assurances. * Question whether the receiving facility is equipped to meet their needs. Don't assume they are prepared. * Be aware of the financial incentives at play. Ask why a transfer is being recommended and whether it truly serves the patient's best interests. Families deserve better than this. My mom's life mattered, and I will continue to fight for transparency, accountability, and systemic change so no other family endures this pain. Sincerely, Joe G.

I never thought l'd be turning 30 years old while bed-ridden in an acute care facility. That…read moreunfortunately became a reality in 2023, after I was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver with dementia on I-39. I just wanted to take the time to recognize the staff at Thrive of Lisle, as they took great care of me. Shoutouts to CNA's Alan & Harrison; nurses Shirley, Mark and Gina. They are the best! Kellie from activities, Jerome and Sue are always roving the halls and engaging with residents. The positivity and enthusiasm of the staff is truly contagious, and made this long recovery journey easier for me. Therapists Susan, Ed, Keyenna and Tiffany have been helping me work towards my goal to be able to walk again and use my left arm. I love Thrive of Lisle, and the staff here. 2023 was easily the darkest time of my life. I nearly lost my life, and was not sure if I'd ever walk again, or be able to return to the career that I love. The staff at Thrive treated me like family. I can't tell you how much happiness and hope that CNA Alan, Nurse Shirley & Kellie brought into my life during this time. They are truly special people. I still come back to thrive and visit at least 4 times a year. It's rewarding for me to visit the current patients during activities time, as well as spreading positivity and encouragement. I also love seeing my extended family (the Thrive staff). My advice & words of wisdom for incoming patients and their families: * Advocate for yourself as the patient; if you're a relative; please advocate for your loved one. * Treat the staff with love & respect (I promise it'll come back to you ten-fold, and will be a much better experience for you & the staff this way.) * You might be shy at first, but take full advantage of the activities that Kellie puts together! From craft-making to group games; it's a fun time for everyone! (Even the patient's visitors are encouraged to participate). * It doesn't matter if you're bedridden, the staff will make sure to get you out to socialize, shower, or PT. You just need to communicate your needs to them early enough in the day. * Family: PLEASE don't underestimate the power of your visits. Frequent visits will greatly help your loved one as they strive to recover. I had at least 2 family members taking turns visiting me throughout each day. *Keep in mind, you ARE allowed to sit in on your loved one's physical therapy sessions. - Just ask the therapist as a courtesy* * Stay positive & Keep on thriving! Respectfully, Tim

The therapy was to target both upper and lower body and I felt it was a great benefit for me. Therapist took time to answer my questions on how or why the different excersises were a benefit. I had Murium and Traci. Nurses and CNAs were all pleasant. When I was not in my room they would look for me for required medications or lab tests. They also seem to work as a team. No task is beneath anyone. The activities director Kelli has such a nice personality that even someone like me that typically does not join in was participating. Because I did not have anyone visiting me they made a point of making me not feel alone. Many of the staff were good but I had a special thanks to Noah Teddi Alfonso Sue Kelli Drew Odette and my wound care team. I was able to heal nicely by the time I was discharged thanks to their attention and care. Only issue is with the evening shift. I think they forget at times that it is bedtime for us even if it's just a work-shift for them. They would be quite loud and slam doors. Rooms are 2 people so if someone needs to be tended to in middle of the night or is hard of hearing that's a problem too.
