Of the two dishes we ordered one was very good (shrimp royale) and the other (shrimp quesadilla) was so bad it was inedible. The quesadilla came with potatoes that were undercooked and starting to go bad. The quesadilla itself had all its ingredients separated inside it so it was like many separate meals. The coffee was subpar, but the service was consistently quite good. The building itself was filled with smoke from the cooking bacon. I didnt mind too much until I left and realized that I now reek of bacon smoke. I recommend going to the other stack'em high location, it is much better. read more

This place is excellent. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The pancakes and French toast delicious. Fresh fruit on top a pleasing bonus. We were only here for a night but considering coming back soon, and this will be a priority. I can't wait to try the biscuits. read more

If you're a fan of breakfast foods, you'll be a fan of Stack'em High. The french toast was served with the best cinnamon butter, and the pancakes were fluffy and tasty. The only downfall was the hashbrowns, which started off good, but as they cooled down, got salty. That said, I enjoyed the whole breakfast a lot. Don't be put off by the line. The place felt very homey with its hodge-podge coffee mugs and dinnerware. The food was amazing and made to order. The servings were plentiful and filled you up, quick. The pancakes were delicious and had they're own taste that I've never had before. The waiters/waitresses were quick, social, and made you feel right at home. For quick in and out non-fast food breakfast this is the place. Yes it has a different method of ordering, cafeteria style, but it doesn't take that long to order and be seated. The price was very good for a family $4.50 for 3 cakes 2 eggs and 3 bacon or sausage. Staff was very attentive to refills of coffee and busing tables. There is no assigned wait staff but we were very happy with all that assisted us. this is a locally owned restaurant serving only breakfast. Loved it. Total time in restaurant at 9:00 am, 35 min. One of the best breakfast places in the Outer Banks. We vacation here annually and always include at least one breakfast each year. The line will be long and the parking can be tough but it is worth the effort. The line moves quickly and soon you will be enjoying a great breakfast. Pancakes are the staple but they also have French toast and waffles. Nick, the owner, and his lovely bride are in the restaurant to ensure everyone is happy and satisfied. I didn't really care for this place. It's cafeteria style which was unique but the lady asking us for our drinks was incredibly rude. She seemed very annoyed if you didn't answer her fast enough. These are pancakes like my mom would make, if my mom sucked at making pancakes. The chocolate chips weren't incorporated into the batter, they were burnt, and the syrup and butter tasted like something you'd get at the dollar tree. I got hash browns that looked like they were scooped out of the garbage and plopped on my plate. The coffee was too watery and the set up of the restaurant was awful and confusing. We ate here twice during our trip to the Outer Banks because it was absolutely delicious! It always looked like a long line, but this is misleading. After ordering and being seated our food arrived in only about five minutes and was absolutely delicious! Truly homemade and full of flavor! I've never had such amazing hash browns or pancakes! I am picky about my food since I cook everything fresh at home, but we went here as an alternative while waiting to get into our vacation property, and it was awesome. Eggs and bacon good, pancake okay, hash browns and gravy biscuits trash, the biscuit tasted like a 3 inch thick stale cracker with gravy.

We own a place in Duck and decided we wanted to try something different. There was a line but it seemed to be moving. I asked how long of a wait it would be and the response I received was "there was no way to know as everything is made to order"! I overheard some people complain. We still decided to give it a try. Forty- five minutes later, we got our food. To say that the cooks were unprofessional, would be a HUGE understatement. You could clearly hear them yelling. By the time I finally got my breakfast (I had ordered hash browns with my omelette), they were out of hash browns. The waitress asked if I would like a pancake and while it wasn't what I wanted, I accepted it. I heard both waitresses asked for substitutes and one of the cooks yelled VERY loudly that the choice was either hash browns or grits - period!!! I do not like grits so I should be punished because our order got pushed backed (which I found out). The other couple sitting next to us also had their order pushed back. We both had others come in after us and get their food ahead of us. The excuse was that it just sometimes happens that way - orders get mixed up. The pancakes were good but clearly no worth the hassle!! We will NOT be back! read more

A little confusing when you first walk in. You order drinks and then go to the register to order your food. But once you sit down you will have the worlds best pancakes at lightening speed!! So looked forward to this place. Thrown off a little at first with the cafeteria style ordering process where you get a tray and put some of the extras on your plate and then order your main dish and pay before seating, but that is fine. The pancakes themselves were bland but they did put tons of chocolate chips in them so that helped the flavor. Syrup was watered down. I got a side of bacon and I really don't know how you screw up bacon. It was a very poor quality bacon and was cooked beyond crispy. When a fat guy like me leaves a piece of bacon behind you know there is a problem. I would suggest skipping this place if you want a good breakfast. read more

This place was NOTHING like it was when it opened years ago! My partner and I went to go eat here on August 25,216 because it had been years since I had gone to eat here and from what I remembered their food was good! BUT it was again NOTHING at all I had remembered! Right when u walk in they have a sign up warning you about the smoke from the cooking oil they use! I guess they don't have a source of good air filtration/ventilation for their kitchen! So your already sitting down and in hailing all that smoke! The price was not bad for the food, I ordered a "veggie omelet with wheat toast" while my partner had "short stack". When I got my omelet I noticed IMMEDIATELY it was sitting on top of what look like a small pond of grease!! it was so DISGUSTING! I almost wanted put napkins under the omelet just to soak up the grade it was sitting in! I took 3 bites because I figured I could get past the oil/grease and I was so hungry too! But the egg was so dry and there was hardly NO cheese and too much veggies piled inside! Eventually I was FORCED to quite and leave the place because I was having troubles breathing! (And being pregnant did NOT help with the smoke that I was in hailing! I grew nauseous and left outside). Leaving the NASTY omelet on the table unfinished! But if anything.. My partner said his "short stacks" was good. And he ate all this. Food and at least I could down their wheat toast! My advice.. Its NOT worth it unless you are OK with breathing in BURNED OIL grease smoke and don't mind your food floating in grease! I'm very saddened to see this place going down the drain and their food quality becoming cheap and slackly! read more

It's cafeteria style, got it . . . but apparently you're only allowed one tray per party and the lady fixing your drink will argue with you about it. Signs everywhere about how 'tips are appreciated' and it's got me wondering for what? This was our first time after coming to OBX for years. But it is off season and not many places are open including the KDH location, I found the people there to be friendly and helpful. First time trying this place. When you come in you order your food like a cafeteria so you have to know what you want fairly fast. With not being here before made that a little difficult. Fortunately no one was behind us. So I decided on the short stack special with 3 pancakes eggs and bacon. My husband ordered the chunky monkey with consisted of banana and chocolate chip pancakes, 2 eggs and bacon. We waited about 30-40 minutes for our food. The couple behind us got here before us and were still waiting, their order was put behind others and had they not asked about it no telling when it would have come. Anyway once our food arrived it was hot, my bacon was crispy just like I asked and the pancakes were some of the best ones I have eaten. My hubby loved his pancakes. I would suggest looking up the menu before going and be prepared to wait. Also it was very hot and stuffy, don't think the air was on. Probably won'tbe back during this vacation. read more

This is an absolute great place to go for breakfast. We went on a Sunday morning so there was always a short line but it kept moving. Tables would become empty for people to sit so it always worked out no matter how many people were in line. There were 6 of us and we were seated promptly. Most excellent breakfast. We had the pecan banana pancakes with clam hash on the side. This was the first time I have ever even heard of clam hash! I was really glad I tried it. The hash and pancakes were both delicious. I would go back here in a heart beat. My only complaint (hence the four stars instead of 5) the OJ is the typical dispenser kind. My husband and I ate breakfast at Stack 'em High with our one year old daughter since our hotel did not offer breakfast with our stay. It's an interesting setup, where you stand in line cafeteria-style, grab a tray and any to-go items like juice, fruit, yogurt, then order your hot food before paying. They give you a number and escort you to a table, and your made to order breakfast dishes are brought to your table. I had the banana chocolate chip pancakes and my husband had the berry pancakes. They were gourmet! My pancakes had the chocolate chips and bananas baked right into the cakes, rather than just sprinkled on top like many restaurants do. My husband's had blueberries baked inside and strawberries overflowing the top. They were both so tasty that I would go back here in a second! A true gem for the Outer Banks, would highly recommend it! read more
