This is such a great space to see a local production done by kids. There isn't a bad seat in the theater. If you have toddlers, they have booster seats available to use, just ask. The tickets are reasonably priced and you can usually get one last minute of needed. The staff are really helpful and friendly in my experience. The seats are comfortable and there really isn't a bad spot to sit in order to have a great view of the stage. Parking is all street parking, so it can be a challenge on a busy night to find a close spot. After the shows I've been to, the actors all line up to say hello and sign your program. We LOVE the Stages Theatre! The 1st show we went to was Maltida and my older son loved it and we have been taking our two boys (ages 6 & 3) to shows since then. Great plays with mostly children actors/actresses tailored for kids. The cast also does meet and greets after the shows - my kids love getting to meet them! Madagascar today was our 4th show and we went a group of almost 40 people. The group discount rate is amazing and it's fun to go enjoy a show with a group of friends. FREE parking ramp super close to the Stages Theatre which is very nice. They also have lap child passes for $5/kid (age 4 and under) for younger kids who want to sit in the lap of an adult vs having their own seats. Highly recommend checking out shows here! read more

We enjoy the variety of entertainment available at the stages performance center. Plays for all ages, various musical acts. All that we have attended, were well performed. I love the Stages theater! I think these are mostly kids who perform popular and some less popular productions. The staff are always so friendly, and there is plenty of seating. I was one of the lucky parents who got to chaperone by kiddo's class to attend The Day You Begin stage show. The staff helped up get to our seats easily and was very organized. The place was clean and had fun art on the walls and most importantly easy bathroom access which is needed for several classes of kids. The play itself was fun, engaging, and meaningful! The Day You Begin play is based on the book by Jacqueline Woodrow. It's a book about accepting and sharing our differences and once you do that things can really begin for you. We brought our four kids to their first musical here. We watched elf and it was fantastic! My ten year old son leaned over in the middle of the play and said, "thanks for bringing me here, this is really good!' It's a Really great place to take a family! Our kids are ages 5-12 and they all enjoyed it. The actors are very talented. Every scene was entertaining, they had excellent sets, and very good songs! The theatre isn't very big so any seat is a good one. They have booster seats for young kids. The characters lineup outside after for a meet and greet after the show. The line gets long though, so get there quickly if you want to chat with them or get signatures. The Lobby can get crowded right before or after the show. Their is free parking around the theatre. I've taken my kids to dozens of shows here over the years, and we've had a lot of fun watching them. I personally enjoyed most of the shows, but they are usually geared toward younger kids, not too original, and usually quite silly. For $15 or so, it's a good deal. Sometimes we've even seen more mature, out of the norm shows that they've put on in the side theater, those can be hit or miss, but again, my kids really liked them. read more

Stages is flat out the best family theater in the Twin Cities. You will also want to check out the Children's Theater Company in Minneapolis (top notch, top price) and Steppingstone Theater in St Paul (great fun, good value). Stages is fun for any age, but if your pre-school or elementary school has not taken a field trip to Stages, then it's time you had a talk with the teacher and schedule a field trip to the theater. The actors are mostly kids, and yes, they can act. The costumes are as professional as you could want, and allow for you to really get into the performance. One neat aspect I've seen is the actors line up in the lobby after a show and give autographs and take photos with you and your kids, in costume, following the show. The theater is large, clean, new looking, and very nice. The coat room is free and on the first floor to the right of the art gallery also inside the building. Lots of free parking in ramp half a block away. Lots of interesting shops and restaurants on Hopkins Main Street to check out after the show. Do you like antiques? You'll find 'em in dt Hopkins. Also pretty close to a neat looking bike trail... but we live far enough away that we drive to Hopkins. Enjoy the show! read more

"To be, or not to be. That is the question." Stages Theatre offers wonderful opportunities to children of a wide variety of skill and back grounds. So if you are unsure if your child should or should not act, try this place out. They have a wonderful kids' acting summer camps, with one week long camps during the summer, where your child can try them out. They offer a wide variety of fun, interesting 'plays' firyour kids to participate in. But make sure you enroll EARLY (right when enrollment opens up) or many classes will be full. Our daughter absolutely loved being in Willy Wonka Jr this summer! Thinking of having your child do one of their regular plays (not the summer camp ones but the bigger production with public performances at Stages)? Then understand it is a serious time commitment including your child missing a bit of school for some afternoon performances, if during the school year. If you have small kids, I'd highly recommend you attend the plays as young kids love them (and they are typically short (45-60 minutes) with no intermission so most kids can sit through a whole performance without having to leave for a bio break. It's a great place for kids! read more

First time to the Stages Theater. I took my three year old with my friends and her four year old son to see Whoever You Are. The show was about 45 minutes and it was in the main stage. The theater seem small like a size of a small movie theater. We were in the middle section and seats were not as stadium elevated as it was hard to see over someone who is tall in front of you. They had booster seats but not very stable in the seat since it was too wide and had no ridge outline for you to know which way it should face and it was a little too short still for our toddlers to see over the head of an adult sitting in front of them. You would to grab like 5 of them stack together but then it would become unsafe so in the end both toddlers sat on our respective laps. So I'm the future we would just buy lap seats. The show was engaging and like that the cast came out at the end for pictures and autographs. The theater has a small private lot but only for theater staff so parking would have to be on street and if you're not comfortable with parallel passing them you might have to circle the block or there is a parking ramp a block away. On street parking is free and I'm not sure if the ramp is free. read more

I can't recommend the theatre for the very young enough!! We've gone to the Children's theatre and Old log kids' shows and the Orpheum opera, but Stages kills it for the under 5 crowd. My daughters 2.5 and 1 LOVED the Inch by Inch show. It was interactive and beautifully performed. The show started with quiet play and guitar music while the actors interacted with the kids at various stations. Highly recommend for young kids! read more

Stages is a really fun place. There website is easy to navigate ...and does a great job of telling you where to park. There is free parking in a nearby deck...yes free! The theater is nice...staff is nice. The volunterrs are nice. We went to see Madagascar. The kids doing the play did a really good job. It was just the right length of time for my two small children. My kid saw her first live theater performance at Stages just after her second birthday and over the last six years, I've seen many many performances. Some shows have been brilliant, others have been just ok. But for $12-$15 (and free for under two!) Stages is giving very solid entertainment. There's no snack bar or gift shop, to which I say THANK YOU. We've also attended their summer street fair -- super fun! Alas, I'm not the biggest fan of their preschool classes. Oh, I'd still recommend them, but I wouldn't *highly* recommend them. Did you know Hopkins has a free parking deck? Hopkins is so cute. read more

As a person of color I have not been treated well here and I have lived in Minnesota all of my life and been to many theaters around the state. I was really looking forward to this establishment and gave it a dozen tries. Very disappointing yet when my child sees an act she wants to attend I will send a grandparent to chaperone since people of my skin tone are clearly not as welcome as the next white person. read more

Pay no mind to the fact that the cast are mostly children, because these kids are professionals. The ticket prices are reasonable, I got great seats for a reasonable price, and they don't try to charge extra for a program. I approve! I just wish there was some sort of snack bar, but that may be helpful in keeping the theater clean. read more

I like how kid friendly this theater is. I came to see Rudolph with my sister and her family and it was a lot of fun. I think the seats could be slightly higher for the adults that might be seated in front of the kids that are sitting on the booster seats. I like that there are stools in the bathroom for the kids to reach the sinks to wash their hands. read more

I saw one really bad production of Junie B Jones years ago so we stopped going to this theater. Then recently I was a chaperone with a school trip and we saw a musical of Junie B Jones and it was awesome! So maybe will start going again...it's a beautiful facility, great for school groups. read more

I live in Hopkins and when I saw a Stages show I was not impressed. It was Little Mermaid a while back, and my child loved the Little Mermaid but didn't understand anything about this interpretation. We have gone to Children's Theater and she really enjoyed it and she understood it all very well. I have to say that the cast of children was very talented but I think the director was confused on how to make it easy to understand for anyone. Even I didn't understand what was happening. I would also appreciate more diversity among the kids, my daughter is Asian and only sees a few kids up on stage that look like her. Children's Theater was very good on diversity. Overall, I would say take your kid to Children's Theater, a much more enjoyable show. read more

We've taken the kiddos to see a couple different plays now. I was quite impressed at the creative use of props in the show. The acting was great and told the story that they wanted to get across. They deviate from traditional storylines that work to entertain kids and adults alike, so it's not the same old story. The best part is you get to meet the actors after the show.
