They have gone downhill from a strong base in which I gave them a 5). Don't get me wrong-they are not bad but not as good as before and not acceptable for this price point. Service was decent but the food was average (for a premium place). Many of our items were not prepared the way we wanted and hence were sent back: Medium rare came as blue and when it came back it was quite dry which is not acceptable for a $74 steak but the person did not want to be a jerk and send it back again. They also messed up on the service-they gave wrong dish (order) and drinks to many people. The server also had to ask many people "what did you order?" Not good! Good thing this time i was with friend's and I was not entertaining clients or it would be quite embarrassing. A bit of a disappointment considering we have been here many many times. The actual experience is 3.5 but in this case I have to round down instead of up since they are not a 4. Downhill considering my previous reviews was a solid 5 without hesitation. Visited Stakeout for a celebratory dinner a few weeks ago. The decor and ambiance of this restaurant was lovely and made for a comfortable, quiet dining experience. The patio area was clean & well-maintained, while the interior reminded me of a fancier dining area - complete with armchairs & cozy booths, chandeliers, and a fireplace. There were plenty of kind servers, and none of the tables seemed neglected for too long. However, the food didn't live up to the same standards considering the premium price, which was disappointing. We ordered the prime rib and grilled Chilean sea bass. Food presentation was pleasing, but the prime rib was overcooked (asked for medium rare), as were the fries. The vegetable and mashed potato sides were pretty basic too. I expected more buttery, whipped mash. The sea bass was alright, but it didn't stand out. The things we liked the most were the Yorkshire pudding (came with the prime rib) and the complimentary warm bread with olive tapenade. read more

This restaurant presents itself as an upscale restaurant so you would expect a certain level of service. On arrival, the host was in front of the entrance door and saw us coming in. He just looked at us and walked back to the desk. You would have thought he would open the door to welcome us. Regardless, we were attended to once we went in. For a Friday night, the restaurant was not full. We had 9 people celebrating a 65th wedding anniversary. The food was just OK. For starter, we had the oysters and calamari. Both were just OK. One person had the French Onion soup which was stated as being salty. The starter sides came very quickly after the orders were placed. However, after that, we were all sitting there for over 1/2 an hour wait for the main course. The server pretty much didn't pay us any attention during that time. You would have expected him to at least communicate that the food is coming or something. For dinner, I had the Filet Mignon. Although tender, it didn't have much flavour and the bacon it was wrapped in tasted a bit off. The side order of caesar salad was a good serving size with fresh ingredients, however, it was a little oily and just a piece of anchovy. I couldn't taste anchovy in the dressing. I asked for butter for my baked potato and the waiter was telling me I show use the left over butter from the bread. I had to ask for fresh butter! One person's steak wasn't hot and had to request for it to be heated up. My husband had the ribeye which had a good flavour and seasoning. For an 'upscale' steakhouse and at the prices they are charging, you would expect a better calibre of service. The waiters were stretching over people to serve instead of walking around, we had to be passing our empty dishes to them and in general not very attentive. Even offering black pepper for the food they only offered to one end of the table. They were a bit flustered. Also, the restaurant had these little flies buzzing around all night. You can make reservations for either one, but from my experience they're not usually busy. I've passed by Stakeout very often, since I'm usually in the area, but have never decided to go in because of how pricey it looked... But I've finally tried it out! They're your classic casual-fine dining steakhouse. I say casual-fine because though they don't enforce a dress code, the waiters and other diners are all nicely-dressed. I got the Blue Cheese Filet Mignon with a beef barley soup. I've got to say - their soup is surprisingly delicious! Not too salty and a good ratio of solids vs. soup. The filet mignon was nicely prepared, though I've had blue cheese before but never this aromatic... It was a little much for me (even though I love cheese). The mashed potatoes that came with it was disappointing. No gravy and it was fairly dry. The vegetables were good, they had a nice crunch and weren't too mushy. My mom got the prime rib and her portion was huge and a good bang for its buck. I'd recommend that over the other steaks (which were sizeably different). Service was very good, something you can definitely expect in such an upscale place. Our waiter kept checking on us and giving us frequent updates on our meals (he apologized for the wait because there was a large party that backed up the kitchen), but wasn't so often that he was annoying. The atmosphere of the dining area was rustic and high-class. Curtains were draped over doors and there are skylights that bring natural light into the room. They've definitely renovated the building before establishing the restaurant there - the walls are all wood and rustic. Lights are a little dim and they have very nice seats (comfortable). read more

I've tried a few menu items over the years. We've always had great meals and good service. Most recently I had a kir royale, bacon wrapped scallops, the lobster tail dinner for my main with house salad to start, and chocolate cake for desert. It was a pretty fantastic meal I have to say. In the past I've ordered the pork chop as my main and loved it. One if the biggest porch chops I'd ever seen! My husband likes to order the steaks which are always delicious as well. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu! Nice ambiance - I only wish they didn't have TVs going during a nice dinner - but I guess some people need sports. read more

This was one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had. There was a group of 4 of us going out to the Stakeout for my birthday. I was so excited to try this place. The atmosphere is really nice. No complaints there. I ordered the filet mignon and the other 3 ordered the prime rib. I ordered a glass of pinot noir which was "off". I am by no means a sommelier but I do know when a wine is off. I let it go and didn't say anything. I ordered my filet "medium". When the plate arrived it was clearly not a filet mignon. It was a flat piece of beef (more like a ribeye) and it was so overcooked it was beyond well done. The manage came out and said they will put another one on the grill right away. So there I am sitting without a meal while my dinner companions are eating. My husband's prime rib was disgusting! He ordered it medium rare. It came to the table practically raw. The meat was filled with grizzle. It was a 12 oz prime rib and only approximately 4 oz was edible. It looked like a pile of mushy gooey fat and grizzle. My steak still hadn't arrived by the time everyone else was eating so I told them not to bother. The entire evening was a horrible experience. Needless to say, I refused to pay for my meal. Will never go back. Go to the Keg. This place is awful! read more

When you walk into this establishment, you may feel a sense of how upscale it was. From the fancy chairs, the ambient lighting, and the well dressed server...everything seemed perfect but boy was I deceived. I ordered the ribeye steak medium rare with a double baked potato. We waited around 40 minutes from our appetizer to our entree. We waited so long, I watched other people receive their meal who came before us. I politely asked the waiter to check on our order, he informed me that the kitchen was backed up and it would take another 15-20 minutes before we will receive it. I waited a total of 1 hour before I received my food. That's okay, I understand that the kitchen can get busy. My dinner finally arrived and it was made medium well. I was so beyond disappointed because I knew if I complained, I would most likely have to wait another 15-20 min before I would eat again but how could a upscale establishment with such high prices make the mistake between cooking a medium rare and a medium well? I asked the waiter to have my order redone as I've waited long enough, I want to have a medium rare steak. If I wanted a medium well, I could have cooked it at home with a grade AAAA steak from Costco. The waiter informed me what I already expected...another 15-20 minute wait. At this point I've lost my appetite and just want to leave. I asked to speak with the manager whom did not help me at all and made the experience even worse. He basically told me that it's not their fault that the steak came out so late as it takes time to cook, but even with the steak coming out wrong, it's not their fault because they are busy. At this point, I knew that the manager will not be able to help to make my experience any better so I told him it's fine, clearly it's my fault for coming here. He then asked me what else do you want me to do? We are already going to make you another steak...another steak that was going to take 15 min before I could eat. Guess what... The steak came out rare. I would never take a date here nor ever recommend this place to anyone. The only 5 star I can give is for the servers who are trying their best to make the experience amazing. I cannot say how the lounge side was as peeking from the double doors it looked amazing...but for dining side...I would never ever recommend it to anyone...not even my worst enemies. Okay for starters, I forgot to take a picture of my entrees. I had the caesar salad to start. Absolutely incredible. The dressing wasn't super creamy, sort of a vinegary taste, but most enjoyable. I would say the perfect consistency. For my entrees I had the steak sandwich, cooked medium rare and the mac and cheese with double smoked bacon. It was by far the best steak sandwich I have ever had. The bun was a baguette with garlic butter, there was the perfect amount of garlic, perfectly complemented the steak (which was also cooked PERFECTLY). The steak sandwich came with a choice of two sides, I chose the double baked potato (also baked incredibly) and the fries which were amazing. The mac and cheese was also phenomenal. (I apologize again for not taking pictures of the sandwich and mac and cheese... I was starving). Server wise: I was served my Meriana. She was so sweet, very caring about my experience and very accommodating. I also spoke to the manager on duty, his name was Chris, he was also very sweet, caring and accommodating. I also was watching the other tables around me and all of them looked very happy. Two servers in particular, Steph and Tressa (I overheard their names) were just ask sweet, caring and accommodating. I very much enjoyed the consistency of good service at Stakeout. All in all, I had an amazing experience at this restaurant, would go back without question and am planning to celebrate my birthday there as well. Have been here a couple of times now, the first time was with my wife, we decided to go out for a good meal and had heard a lot of good things about the place. The atmosphere is great and it is a true steakhouse with big comfy chairs big draperies hanging from the 12 foot ceilings to the floor. The service is impeccable and leave you feeling valued and appreciated which is nice when you are spending a few hundred dollars on a meal. It even comes with the authentic good fellas sitting in the corner discussing whatever business they need to discuss at 10.30PM - love it. As for the food; the taste is great, however both times I was there I didn't feel too hot afterwards, but I think it was the escargot that might have done it the first time and the second time it could have been the Caesar salad that came with the meal. read more

I was sat in the lounge area and was ignored by the waitress for 10 minutes while she had a conversation at the bar, not the kind of service you expect at an expensive steakhouse, so I got up and left. I have found that certain bar staff are ok and others are full of attitude like this one. The food is not great for the price anyways, they're charging Keg prices but the food and Steak at The Keg is far superior. The cuts of steak are just not up to steakhouse standards and depending on the night how your steak is cooked varies as well, it can be way overdone or way undercooked. What a great dinner! So I'm a fan of The Keg and love their Prime Rib, so I had a benchmark that I had to compare to as we walked into the Stakeout Dining Room & Lounge. Located on Main Street just as you enter Stouffville from the west, the restaurant is located in a small strip mall on the north side of the street. There is parking and there is outside seating if you want to enjoy dinner outside. The inside of the restaurant feels cozy and rich, dark colours, wood panelling, leather seats, like a steakhouse should feel! We felt a little underdressed in jeans and polo shirts, but we were welcomed warmly so it was nice that it didn't feel stuffy. We were seated by the window in the relatively empty restaurant. There was a good range of big tables, tables tucked away in the corner for intimate meals. The chairs were big and comfy and all of the tables are already set with a cutlery, chargers, and wine glasses.The waitstaff was attentive and polite and in my opinion a little more formally uniformed than in other places that I've been. They came straight away with warm bread and an olive tapenade (yum!) and butter of course. The prime rib dinner costs $21.95 for an 8 oz cut. This is a few dollars more than at The Keg, but I'd suggest that its a better value. The dinner came with a choice of salad as a starter (and it was a huge salad). I had a greek salad and it came with a lot of olives as well as a big hunk of feta, just like they do it in Greece, not just little crumbles. The main (prime rib) was cooked to my preference drizzled in a gravy and with yorkshire pudding. The huge baked potato and a vegetables came on the separate plate, which I loved! The waitstaff came by with all the baked potato fixings, sour cream, bacon bits and green onions and will pile them on until you say stop. The wine list seemed extensive. I'd suggest that if you didn't see something that you wanted on the menu, the staff would try their hardest to make it for you. Nice touch for sure! There is a lounge/bar that is closed off from the main dining area that you can get to without going through the dining room. It seems like it would be an excellent place to hang out. I bet it used to be a lot busier than it was on this Friday night. Too bad for the owners, but maybe good for the customers...a hidden restaurant that is a great go-to steak place that you'll be able to get great service and a table when you want it! read more

Was very impressed with service and food last evening on a very hectic night. The appetizers were delicious (had king crab, wife had lobster bisque). Steaks were cooked to perfection. I was invited to Stakeout for dinner with another couple so we could celebrate new years and it was nothing short of amazing I had such a great time. the ambiance was not only stunning the food was cooked to perfection. Our server was so cheerful--from the moment he greeted our table until we left full and happy. The menu is pretty extensive, seafood, steak, and more steak, lol We ordered appetizers for the table and the apps came out first, all fairly big and easy to share. Then came the main attraction the STEAK and it cooked to perfection, on a very hot plate our server warned us not to touch. I don't eat red meat that often but this meal brought out the carnivore in me... after our meal we headed over to the bar lounge where we danced the night away well after midnight. Our friends were tired but we were happy to stay and enjoy the night. I asked the bartender and she told me they have a DJ every weekend, me and my husband will definitely come back for date night I would definitely tell my friends about this restaurant it is the Harbour 60 of the north. read more
