On separate occasions my mother, my daughter and I all had hair cut by PETER, my daughter and I also had him color our hair. All three of us left sorely disappointed. For the color treatment he left the color in my hair for so long my hair fell out in clumps. Later I found out he had gone across the street to get lunch from Safeway during my color. He over processed my daughter's hair reprocessed it twice to try to correct it. Needless to say it was purple green hue when it should have been blonde. My mother's cut was so bad it took 3 months to grow out. The worst part is he doesn't listen to you- he just does what he wants. I went to PETER for two years, he was good in the beginning. His patience has run thin and he hardly knows you are there now. read more

Tony is my hair stylist. He has always been very professional. The reason I am leaving a one star, is there's a woman hair stylist could not stop talking. At first she was on the phone for about 20 minutes inside facing the studio, very loud with her native language. After that she started chatting loud with whomever's available. Midtown Hair studio is a great spot to get your hair done! We had initially gone into the Los Altos location, but with the amount of processing my hair required it was recommended we hop over to the Palo Alto location to get the best service and care. That decision could not have been better! Peter and his team were very accommodating, and services are very reasonably priced for this area. I'm so happy with the results and hope more folks think of this salon for their next bleach/dye/haircut. Already booked my return appointment :) read more

I'm hesitant to write this review of Anh because I don't want her calendar to get booked up and then I have difficulty getting an appointment, but she does such a great job that it would be a shame not to share. I get compliments all the time on my hair and it's all thanks to Anh. I see her for color, highlights, Brazilian blowouts and, of course, hair cuts. When I sat down in Peter's chair, I requested a trim with long layers (similar to the shape that I already had, just without the dead ends). I was told that the cut was $75, which I was okay with, since I've had my hair shampooed + precision cut at the same price before. (I've attached a photo of a previous haircut -- not at Midtown -- that I was happy with) However, perhaps due to the surge of people coming in, he seemed to be rushing to get done, which resulted in layers that were barely blended. It left my hair blunt and choppy at the ends, which was exactly what I wanted to avoid... I definitely expected much more for my money's worth. I can't say I'll ever get my hair cut here again. Disclaimer: I do love Midtown and have been bringing my boyfriend here for the past year, but I've never gotten my own hair cut. This doesn't speak to their men's cuts, just my personal experience that fell short of expectations. read more

I have been going here for 10 years and most of the people there are really great at cutting hair. However, I was in a rush and had decided to go with a new lady whom i'd never seen before. I asked for an extremely simple haircut with just a little off the sides (I made sure to reiterate this clearly as well). But she made my sides literally 10x shorter than what I wanted and then proceeds to not fade my hair at all (which it obviously needed to be). This wasn't even the worse part though - since she completely shaved my hair to the top (which was also pushed way too high up) she then leaves the back of my head with large tuffs of hair and says I don't know what to do with this. I tell her to just make it a bit shorter and visually show where to cut (assuming she would blend/match it to the front of my head). She literally shaves ALL of it off leaving my hair starting WAY too far forward. I actually look like an idiot and I don't know how or when this will be fixable as the hair I need for my head to look normal is completely gone. It's so bad that it forced me to write my first review ever because I honestly feel that someone like this should not be allowed to cut hair. Also she cuts my ear causing me to flinch and then literally 2 seconds later does the same thing leaving a small open wound. This isn't very helpful but she had extremely long black hair that was slightly dyed (I would 100% avoid her if you have male hair). Peter and the other asian lady's are great though. read more

I had two haircuts here for my kids - one each :) Very friendly welcome when you come in - clean and bright. Prices are very reasonable especially for this area and the skill set of the stylists here during our visits. First visit for my daughter went great while we were there - stylist was responsive and patient for sure = but a bit if a hit once her hair dried at home - layered short = it was a bit uneven. I know we could have come back and gotten it sorted no problem - but my daughter wanted me to even it up at home =- which I managed lol I definitely felt confident to come back a few days later to have my son's hair cut - he was reluctant since the last two at other places cut it way too short and really didn't listen to what he wanted. However, Zim our stylist here was awesome - she did a great job at asking the right questions and delivering a really great cut for him that we were both happy about. She's so upbeat and professional - definitely will be coming back for the next one. read more

I moved up to the Bay Area in 2005 and for the decade that followed, made the 6 week commute home to Los Angeles to see the barber who had cut my hair since high school. It's hard to part ways with someone with whom you've trusted for the better part of your young adolescent and adult life. One day I was in a pinch. I had a wedding to go to and had to find a place locally that I could trust to get the job done right. Granted, as an Asian male, task itself wasn't hard. But what was hard, was finding someone whom I could trust. Dziem was that person for me. For the last decade, I've had the pleasure of getting my cut monthly from Dziem (don't tell my barber at home). She's amazing not only at getting the job done perfectly every time, but she knows me and is interested in my life and our monthly chats become something that I look forward to. She runs an amazing shop and I can't give her higher praise. My mom stopped by yesterday for a haircut. Peter was already very unfriendly to her at the start, but he asked her to show a photo of what kind of haircut she would like to have. She showed him a front facing photo of a past haircut she liked, but he insisted that he needed to see a photo of the back side of the hair cut before he would cut her hair. She didn't have one and he said to bring a photo of the hair from the back and come back the NEXT DAY to get a haircut. She has never had such a situation happen in her whole life just to get a haircut. It is unacceptable and shows a lack of professionalism and experience that he was unable to cut her hair just because he needed a photo of the haircut from the back. At least he should be able to recommend a hair length in the back based on the photo of the front of the haircut she showed him. Tldr Peter was very rude to my mom requesting a haircut and refused to cut her hair because she could not provide a photo of the back side of a haircut she wanted. read more

Midtown Hair is the best. Dziem, the owner, has been cutting my hair for years since I moved to Palo Alto, and she always does the best job of anywhere I've ever been. The entire team is so friendly and does a great job - they cut my brother's hair too. Dziem is very skilled and has done my hair not just for regular cuts, but also for special events, and every time it turns out amazing. I have wavy and frizzy hair, which can be tricky, but Dziem knows exactly how to work with it and has taught me techniques on how to manage it at home. Stylist: Tony I laid out my expectations and needs right when he sat me down to talk about what I'm here for. I told him that I just need an inch or two off my hair. After that, I pointed out a specific pair of scissors I didn't want him to use and that I don't use heat on my hair. Long story short, I don't want a lot of split ends once I walk out the door. Tony was very patient with me! Which I appreciated. On another note, I told him I had nose surgery due to health issues. He definitely got the "memo" and washed my hair gently. That was my favorite part of the experience; I felt as if I was in a spa for a moment! Now to cutting my hair. The fact that he took my words into consideration is what made me a happy client. While brushing my hair, he would part it multiple times to prevent any hair damage. Not going to lie, that was new to me. With each visit I come out completely thrilled with what Peter has done. And all my friends comment how great it looks (including other hair professionals). We got our first haircuts of 2020 today at Midtown Hair Salon on Middlefield Rd. The salon has an outside area for appointments and based on the new county guidelines allowed us to operate indoors today due to the heat. Jenny cut and styled my hair into a really cute bob, which I LOVE! I had no idea what kind of cut I wanted- just that I wanted something shorter. She showed me photos and did a great angled cut that I would've never thought of on my own. She did a full shampoo and wash, cut and blow-dry with a mask on and I also wore a mask the whole time. I felt very safe. My husband has been going to Peter for years and is always happy with his cut. Prices are also reasonable for the area, especially for a nice, established salon in Palo Alto. I was recommended this place for my first visit. Upon arrival, I found one of my family members walking my dog outside. My stylist, Sandy (whom I suggest avoiding), greeted me saying, "I remember you, you come here all the time and always walk your dog outside," despite this being my first visit. I had brought a neatly written list of instructions, which she read for about three minutes. Then she asked, "You want bald on side and back?" I corrected her, "No, it says 'bulk,' not bald." She responded, "What bulk?" I clarified, "Hair," to which she replied, "Of course you want hair if not bald." Later, she asked if I spoke Vietnamese. When I said no, she proceeded to converse in Vietnamese with people behind me, seemingly to exclude me from understanding. Despite my clear instructions, she cut my hair 1.5 inches instead of 0.5 inches as requested. When I pointed this out, she reassured me, saying she would "make me look handsome," in an overly patronizing manner. Upon inspection, my hair was completely wrong: I had asked for a Textured Fringe but got a side part, with uneven sides. When I asked her to use texture powder to style it, she replied, "What tetor?" It baffles me how someone can be a hairstylist without understanding texture. Despite these issues, the haircut was relatively tidy, aside from the unevenness and failure to follow instructions. read more

For my friends wedding, the bride took us to get our hair and makeup done here. Long story short, it was my best experience at a salon and I plan to come back for future hair appointments. Jenny did my hair and makeup and she is so very talented!! I've had a lot of stylists do my hair for shows and events, but it's never looked as great as it did when Jenny curled and styled my hair.
