We wanted to support our local jewelers but we've had two bad experiences here. First, my wedding ring had grown a little too tight so I took it to get resized. They ended up charging $800 and over a month to stretch it out so big that the white gold band became super super thin and the ring flew off my finger. It was comically too big. As soon as they saw it on my finger they agreed to take it back down several sizes. But even with the attempt to fix their mistake the ring still swings around on my finger and the band remains tiny compared to what to once was. I knew the band would thin a bit but since they mistakenly doubled the amount it needed to be stretched I lost a lot of my wedding rings integrity due to that mistake. Even with that, when my husband lost his wedding ring we went back here to find a replacement. Big mistake. After looking at a bunch of rings in the store we didn't find anything in the style he likes that was also white gold. It was important to him to have white gold both to match my ring and also he explained to them he didn't like the various yellow shades of gold against his darker skin tone. The store suggested a more expensive option on special order. We paid up front. The ring came in over a month later and I was out of town for work during that time. My husband picked up the ring and was immediately disappointed but he didn't tell me about it. It was yellow gold. Had I been there I would have refused it, but he did not feel comfortable doing that so he took it home and by the time I came back from my trip, he'd already been wearing it and feeling like he could not return it. Now we have two wedding rings that do not match and that both of us are disappointed about all because of mistakes by the store. And that just makes me sad. read more

Long story short: I highly recommend Stanley Brown for repairs. Their store is charming with nifty antiques, the staff is friendly, and they made a simple repair *free*, even though I bought my ring elsewhere. Plus, their own jewelry is beautiful and quite a few pieces are under $200. Long story long: My husband gave me a ring and necklace set from a major mall chain. We sprang for the warranty in case of repair, resizing, etc. Twelve years later, somehow, I bent the ring out of shape. The only locations for this jeweler now are 45+ minutes away, but I brought it in. They couldn't find my name in the system, so I needed to come back with the warranty paperwork. Brought it back a second time, and they said they would either have to add gold to it for $300, or, because the set has been discontinued, I could buy an updated/extended warranty. However, they couldn't tell me how much that would cost, and either way, I'd have to bring in the necklace too. WTF bullshit is this? That would make 4 trips in total. So I tried Stanley Brown, 15 minutes away. Super nice staffer there said she'd round the ring out for me, free of charge. She was done in five minutes and it fits perfectly. I plan on bringing everything here if it needs repairs, and will stop here first for fancy jewelry. read more

Upon wearing one of the watches several days, one of the pins came out. I was in the neighborhood so I stopped in with my watch. They didn't ask me for a receipt, they just took care of it. I have not purchased any jewelry here, though I am sure that will change soon: they have a great selection and I especially enjoy browsing their estate collection. However, I have come here many times for jewelry repair, watch battery replacement, etc. I have always had a wonderful experience and every single person I have ever encountered who works here is super friendly and helpful. There have even been a couple of times when I needed something super minor (like today, when they resized a ring for me in like 30 seconds flat), and they didn't even charge me. Im a few months late in writing this but I want to give credit where it's due. This fall I had two heirloom pieces that a number of other jewelers in the city said were impossible to fix due to incompatible materials and a whole slew of other supposed reasons. I love this place! I chipped my beautiful tsavorite engagement ring. I talked to several different jewelers about what to do and received many different opinions. The biggest issue seemed to be them knowing a good gemstone cutter. After talking with Shauna at Stanley Brown she offered to reach out to her contacts and find a reputable gemstone cutter. She called me back a few days later to tell me she heard about this wonderful gemstone cutter in New Jersey. She had heard about him through a gemstone dealer she works with. Called about getting a necklace repaired and the kind woman, Sara(h), suggested I bring it in to have it looked at, but warned me it would probably take a little over a week. I took in a watch for repair and it was accepted and sent to the jeweler's watch repairer. Needed a new crystal and a loose date hand either replaced or removed. It was returned to the store a week later because the repair person 'didn't like working with Asian-produced watches'. I've had this same watch - as well as other similar Asian-produced watches - repaired with no issues at my usual watch repairer on Wabash jewelers row. My husband and I had such an amazing experience at Stanley Brown. I had two rings I wanted to combine and my husband worked with Debbie to design a new ring and the outcome was INCREDIBLE. After talking with him and then me about our design, she sketched out some ideas and we agreed on one. She created a plastic mold that we were able to come in and see which was really helpful because I was able to realize I wanted the band to be thinner before the ring was made! It was a wonderful touch. When we went to pick up the final product I could not believe how beautiful it looked. The stones look so much bigger and catch the light beautifully. It's also very sturdy and I don't worry about hitting my ring on the counter like I did with my old ring. It was a lukewarm yet overwhelming experience and I didn't feel like I could necessarily trust most of the vendors there. The next day we walked a block down Lincoln to Stanley Brown. These people know what they're doing. When I sat down to write this review, I realized that we've had a lot of work done here. First and most importantly, we purchased our wedding bands here. We had both custom made and they were exactly how we envisioned them. Also, they reset my engagement ring (which my husband had made out-of-state by his hometown jeweler) and I also had them shape it to match my wedding band. Again, it was exactly what I wanted. My husband had a necklace designed for me here and it is stunning. I also inherited a set of dangly pearl earrings in a gold setting. I'm not a gold girl and they aren't my style, so SBJ covered the gold with a silver finish. I still haven't worn them, but it's now more likely that I will someday. They have also cleaned several items and changed the flimsy settings on a pair of diamond earrings from the Caribbean. Lastly, we had them appraise several items for insurance purposes. We have been pleased with everything. We didn't "price out" any of this, as we felt the quotes were fair. Maybe you could find things cheaper somewhere else, but who cares really. We LOVE supporting local businesses and try to stay away from chains as much as possible. When it comes to something as important as your wedding rings, do you really want to go to a mall? On a side note, the other day I was complimenting a friend on her wedding band. She told me they had them custom made at SBJ. We had a great time talking about how we "love those guys!" Absolutely great. In addition to having the heirloom engagement ring sized down, we also asked for the corresponding wedding band to be sized down, as well as having a ring made for my now-husband. The new ring for him is exactly right: not too heavy, not too thin. We had the wedding date inscribed on the inside, and it's gorgeously done. The heirloom wedding ring for me held a bit of a surprise. Shauna, our jeweler, took a look at it before doing the work, and handed it and the little magnifying glass to me, saying, "Can you read what it says on the inside there?" Aside from "Peacock", I could make out an inscription, but not actual words, so she read it out to me: "J.R. to C.R. 1-25-28". We'd had no idea, but the ring had been made at C.D. Peacock in Chicago nearly 80 years ago -- and Shauna was able to keep the inscription for us! We will likely not have any other real jewelry to take in to them, but on the off chance we do, I'm so happy to have a place I know and trust! read more

I've been seeing a lot of the Stanley Brown Jewelist crew over the summer and fall... And that's not a bad thing. My fiance and I wandered in one day over the summer while shopping around for wedding bands, and long story short, this is the place we ended up going with. Why? The people were all exceptionally friendly and warm each and every time we interacted with them. This place has been around since 1912, and I like to think I can trust them. They have big, beautiful jewels, and big, beautiful dogs behind the counter. (they also have a fantastic logo complete with elegant looking dog head profiles - I love it) We ended up purchasing a brand new band for him (complete with complimentary interior engraving), and fixing up an old family heirloom for me. We were thrilled with both pieces, particularly my old family ring. I get to wear an old treasure that looks brand new again. Prices were fair, turnaround time was reasonable, and we were very happy with our experience here. During my ring visits, I also had a watch battery replaced, and a loose stone re-glued to one of my bracelets. They got me all fixed up in the jewelry department - thank you! read more

I came to Stanley Brown to have a vintage watch my dad gave me repaired and cleaned. All in all, it was a great experience & I would return again. I liked that I was able to get a free estimate and they were not pushy at all. They called me back with an estimate right when they said they would (about a week) and thoroughly explained what would be included at that price. Because the part had to be outsourced, I was quoted 2 weeks but it was actually ready earlier. The price was a little steep (pretty sure more than the watch is worth) but it is a sentimental piece so I was willing to pay the price. Both times I was in the staff was very attentive and friendly. I also appreciated that the woman behind the desk gave me some information about the watch and showed me how to use it. While I wasn't in the market for any jewelry, it looks like they had a large selection of diamond rings and fine jewelry. I cannot say enough good things about Stanley Brown Jewelist. We went here to find a wedding band for my husband and we definitely picked the right place. The staff was so helpful and patient. They explained all the different options in terms of gold and platnium versus alternative metals and the different sizing and finishes. This was very helpful because going in we really didn't know too much. You could tell they were really trying to find something that my husband would love; not just trying to push a sale to make some money. I think my husband tried on about 15 rings (some of them more than once) and found a few that he really liked. We decided to take the week to think all the options over, and then went back in a week later and decided to custom order a ring that melded the different aspects he liked about the rings he was deciding between. The ring arrived within two weeks and we were both so happy with how the ring turned out. It fits perfectly and we both love the way it looks. Mr. Stanley & Mrs. Stanley I have been going there for as long as I can remember. They are truly a place I always go to fix my watchs or with a jewelry problem. They are the trusted go to beautiful people and family to fix my jewelry or to have things appraised. I remember coming in with my mother when she worked across the street at the popular German deli, Meyers, back in the 60's and 70's. 40 years go by (rather quickly, I may add) and I have the opportunity to go back in for a rather mundane battery install in my watch. Werner, who like me is German, is old world trained and it shows in his craftsmanship. While waiting I noticed a beautifully crafted ring in the form of the head of a Scimitar-Horned Oryx. My wife and I are avid travelers and love seeing wildlife. I thought this perfect for her. The folks at Stanley Brown are top drawer. Been here for I believe 100 years.
