One of their drivers parked directly in front of my driveway and blocked my access for approximately 15 minutes. At first, I assumed he was preparing to tow a vehicle because it was street cleaning day. However, there was plenty of room for him to pull his truck forward. Since street cleaning was taking place on my side of the street, there was no legitimate reason for him to remain directly in front of my driveway for 15 minutes while waiting to perform a tow. When I politely asked if he could move his truck until he was actually ready to tow the vehicle, he refused and simply rolled up his window. I called the company to report the issue. During that time, the driver began recording me, mocked me, and made exaggerated gestures instead of acting professionally. I informed the company representative who in turn told me she would contact the driver, and within a minute he drove away. What makes this even more frustrating is that he never towed the vehicle he claimed he was there to tow. My driveway was blocked the entire time for no legitimate reason. Professional tow truck operators should treat members of the public with respect and should never refuse a reasonable request to stop blocking someone's driveway. I hope the company addresses this driver's conduct and provides better customer service going forward. Lulu was a great dispatcher when we called for help dealing with our car, which suddenly would not start. We were stuck downtown in the heavy rain. The problem is the customer service afterwards was awful. We ordered a truck to come out and jump our car yesterday evening. A man showed up, and took maybe 3 minutes to try and get it going, then left when it wouldn't start. At this point we had no choice but to pay for a tow truck to take our car to the garage. I waited 1.5 hrs as they were busy. They were busy and it was raining so no problem with that. When he arrived the tow truck driver hooked up a battery to our car, and it immediately started. The car was now running, and I could have driven it home without any help. I was in the cab, and didn't see him start it up- not until getting to our destination. I was quite surprised the car started up quickly when he drove it off the flatbed. So it turned out the Tow was not needed at all. This morning I called Stanley to get reimbursed for the first jumpstart visit ($80), since that visit hadn't resolved the battery issue when he could have, and which resulted in an unnecessary additional cost of $175 (Tow visit). The lady at Stanley just blamed me, gave me attitude, and refused to help me with a reinbursement. She said this had nothing to do with them. TL;DR: Absolute scum humans. Do not EVER voluntarily give them business. I was towed for street cleaning the first night I parked after moving, hadn't memorized the street cleaning schedule yet. I called ahead and asked how much it would cost to get my car back cause they only take cash (shady as fuck tbh). I show up and they tell me it's an extra 40 bucks cash only cause I didn't show up before 8am which I was NEVER told. The woman goes "I'm sorry they misinformed you" with a sneer. No. Not "they." You. YOUR employee. Who was probably instructed not to tell anyone the whole truth so you can scrape an extra couple bucks out of everyone's pockets. So after I give them cash that they have done nothing but lie to me to "earn," I go out to the lot and my car is blocked in behind other vehicles. I tell one of the guys who's working which car is mine and he walks away. Then I wait, and wait, and wait. After several minutes I call to the guys in the garage if someone can move the car blocking me in. The same guy from before goes "there's no one here, but fine. I'm not even on the clock and I'll move it for you." Cool. What a noble human you are. It's not my fault your company apparently doesn't staff it's lot and is just in the business of hiding their "cash only" profit. He hooks up the car in front of mine and manages to push it back INTO my car, hitting my front fender before pulling it away. So if you were thinking of using this tow company cause your car broke down, don't. They'll probably damage your car even more out of carelessness and be spectacularly rude and superior at all times. Very sneaky company, they damaged my fender and side skirt. They didn't want to take blame - they insist I make a claim using my insurance and they strongly hesitated to provide their insurance information, this tactic is intentional. They are very inconsistent, Manger is never available. They never tell you to check you vehicles before departure of tow lot so any damage they cause is pretty much on you. Very poor communication, service and selection of response. Please avoid this company at all cost!!!! read more

By far the most incompetent business in JP. Called to report another vehicle was parked in my apartment parking lot spot. The male who answered the phone was so incompetent he could not understand what I was referring to and was yelling and repeating the same thing over and over without understanding anything. I was asked the "name of the propriety" and if the Stanley Towing sign was outside of the building. I confirmed the Stanley Towing sign was outside the building and provided the address. Told me they would take the credit card only if my name is on the registration and giving me hard time and being rude to me for no reason and yelling cash only. I think IRS should give them a visit since they demand to pay them in cash only. Most likely they are hiding all of their income I don't know how they are still in business and towing for the city of Boston on street cleaning days, however if anyone ever needs a towing please avoid calling them. Awful experience. Tried to scam me. Had no choice in using them and would not recommend. I showed up to pick up my towed car half an hour before close, without cash on hand, and was told by the woman at the desk it's cash only, so they'd have to keep it another night and charge me another day... she also quoted me a 2-day price, I learned later when I looked at the costs on the City of Boston website. Luckily a super kind and helpful young man took pity on me and ran my credit card without hesitation. The woman TRIED TO STOP HIM REPEATEDLY, making up absurd excuses like "our machine doesn't take your kind of card"... which it did... and he charged me correctly for the cost of the tow and 1 day of storage. Pro tip: they are LEGALLY REQUIRED to accept credit cards, so if they tell you they don't, call them out and make a fuss, and report it to the city! Oh how I dislike you. So my car was stolen and later parked in a street cleaning area and was towed by Stanley's. They inform the police three days later, who then call me. So when I go to pick up my car not only do I have to pay the towing fee which I am ok with, but I have to pay for three days of storage. Ok the towing at least is a service, but it costs them nothing to have my car sitting in their lot. And they waited three days to report it. I was extra mad since my car is not worth the money is costs to recover. I have since donated it. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones that stole it, they do tow from the area it was stolen from. It would be a great business plan for them. read more

Avoid this place at all costs! After seeing some of the other people's reviews on this place, I cannot believe that they have a courteous or professional bone in their body. I am one of the few people who probably chose to interact with this place when my car broke down at the JP Stop & Shop. Unfortunately Stanleys happened to be the closest place nearby so they came and hitched me up and took me to the closest garage. Upon arrival, it was clearly evident that my bumper was dislodged AND there were a few scratches that weren't there before good ol Stan deemed it necessary. The driver was incredulous and told me to speak with the owner. The owner was unbelievably unprofessional immediately getting defensive, and then asking me if I had any pictures or "proof" of the car before it got towed. He then made a reference to me not being able to prove anything in court and told me wasn't his problem. Honestly cant believe scumbags like this get to be in business. read more

My car was parked during a street sweeping and was towed by Stanley's; I cannot dispute the tow and it was my fault to have left it parked there. However, once I located my car and inquired about the fee, the Stanley's representative informed me that they take cash only, which is contradictory to the City of Boston mandate that all private tow companies are "...contractually required to accept payment in cash or any major credit card." [http://www.cityofboston.gov/towing/#stateroad] I began to tell her about the City of Boston website, to which she interrupted my to say that they are a private, independent company. Once she let me continue, I reminded her of their company's contract with the city which obliges them to accept credit cards, to which she replied, "Well, our credit card machine is down right now." On top of this, since my car was in the lot less than 3 hours, I expected an hourly lot fee, but was unsurprisingly charged the $35/day fee. It is abundantly clear that this company is taking advantage of the lack of oversight and accountability to uphold their contract with the city (an hour or two on the phone with different city agencies informed me that there is nothing they can do about the rampant shady dealings of their subcontractors). My best advice would be to avoid getting your car towed and I would definitely advise against voluntarily employing Stanley's if your car is broken down. I still wish Yelp would allow you to give zero stars, as this place definitely deserves it. read more

It's funny that we are even writing these reviews since it's not like a towing service will change anything about how it operates according to customer feedback. But in the process of warning others here is a little on my recent experience about Stanley's: After having an initial conversation about picking up my car and receiving a rude reception I decided to pick up flowers for the receptionist thinking they must get many angry calls every day and are not treated very well. While I believe the flowers were appreciated, the receptionist sadly told me that she actually gets off on how angry people get and their frustration with being towed. This was a very sad experience as I think no matter where you work, you need to treat people like normal human beings and there is something very wrong here. I called to ask about the small fuel surcharge of $3.50, which while not a lot, added insult to injury as I had already paid $110 to be towed 0.4 miles for a $40 street cleaning violation. They said the rate is calculated as a percentage of the overall tow expense, rather than how much fuel they actually use - this does not seem like a fair policy. They then rudely told me that they customers waiting and hung up on (even though I was polite the whole time). read more

This past summer, I failed to notice a no-parking street-sweeping sign in Back Bay. In cooperation with the City of Boston's Parking Enforcement Officers, Stanley Service kindly towed my car to its lot in Jamaica Plain and stored it securely until I got there two hours later. I'm thankful the ticket was only a $40 fine, and that I had to shell out only $15 for a cab after I found taking the bus to Stanley's convenient location impossible. Stanley charged me a mere $90 for the tow (for 20 min. negotiating from BB to JP--so $270/hr for highly skilled labor) and $35 for storage for "1 day" (that is, 120 min.). Along with the other fees, the total came to a mere $134 to release my car to me. How kind! At least they didn't take my GPS (+1 star). But then that kind of theft would be illegal. read more

As much as I want to give this place 1 star for towing my effing car I just can't do it :( It was not their fault that I'm apparently dyslexic and parked on the wrong side for street cleaning which caused the BPD to ticket me and call this lovely company to move my vehicle out of the way. However, it might be a little bit their fault that I was not contacted at all and had to not only pay the towing fee (which is fine - it was my B) but a 2 day holding fee when I finally realized that it was MIA!!! I have a very steep driveway that's daunting even in daytime but dangerous at night if things go wrong. A friend was backing out a few nights ago and cut the wheels too soon. The car ended up comically stuck on some rocks and we found ourselves in need of a tow truck service. I called Stanley's and explained the situation. He said there was one person in the queue before us and that it would be 30-40 minutes before he arrived. We weren't going anywhere so we agreed to have him come out and take a look at the car and we went back inside. 30 minutes later the driver pulls up, calls my phone to say he's here, and we all go out to inspect the situation. He was very thorough, taking pictures of the car from all over, using a flash light to look at it from every angle, and then explaining what he would try to do before before giving us a quote of $125 to free the car. We agreed to the terms and the driver backed the wrecker into place and got to work. Work is the wrong word. It was more like art with the attention he paid to every detail, how he gently freed the car, made sure no rocks pierced the oil pan, turned the car's wheels several times to adjust the angle of attack, and he even made sure that the landscaping was mostly undamaged. In about 20 minutes the car was free, we paid the quoted price (really appreciate him quoting a price and sticking to it), got a receipt, and he gave us advice on the only piece of damage to the car: a loose piece of trim. "Two clips broke. Take it to any auto/body shop and don't let them charge you for a new piece. Shouldn't be more than $5." If I ever need a tow service again, I'll be sure to call Stanley Service. read more

I forgot to move my car on a street cleaning day and my car was towed. I might have been lucky to have it towed by Stanley's. I called them to find out the process. The guy on the phone was nice and to the point: - it's gonna cost you this much. - it's gonna cost you this much more per day you leave it here. - this is how you can pay us. - here is the address you're gonna pick up your car at (by the way, a short walk from the Green Street T station). Before I even had a chance to whine about not being able to pick it up today and blah blah blah, he informed me they are open 24 hours. I finally showed up around 9:30pm and sure enough, someone was there. He actually greeted me with a friendly voice and a smile. And before I was out of there a few minutes later, he'd even told me a funny story. I had my car towed. It's my fault, not theirs. And Stanley's actually managed to make getting towed as pleasant of a process it could possibly be. If I am ever actually looking to have my car towed, I'll definitely call Stanley's. read more

I cannot say enough good things about the team at Stanley. From the first phone call to the pick up (which arrived ahead of schedule) everything went smoothly. We had a difficult pick up because our car was in a parking garage. They have low clearance trucks which we learned is difficult to find. All though they didn't need to use it, we just needed to be jumped. The woman who scheduled our pick up was very courteous and helped us figure out a budget friendly option. She went out of her way to do this and we couldn't be more thankful. The dispatcher, who called us the day of pick up, ahead of schedule, couldn't have been nicer. He didn't rush us at any point. The tow truck driver, David, was so helpful, huge smile and very attentive. He explained stuff to us that we wouldn't have known otherwise. Great team at Stanley, I highly recommend them. read more

My car was ticketed for street cleaning, after street cleaning had been done and these guys still came and towed it, absolutely ridiculous. They have shady payment policies (insistent on cash only, probably not reporting income) and the agents at the company are rude.they use highly Predatory towing tactics. I wouldn't be surprised if the tow was fraudulent as they do it to make you pay $150. The whole company is a mess from top to bottom with so many red flags. Louis from Stanley's REALLY helped me out in a pinch last month. Long story short, my starter bit the dust and my car was stuck in a low-ceiling garage at work. AAA could not help me - they don't have trucks short enough. Well, Stanley's didn't either, but Louis used his sweet skills and know-how to get it out into the open and then towed it to my mechanic. I work just down the block, and have for 4 years. Stanley's is located in a super busy part of JP, right between schools, mental health and medical clinics, sports fields and residential ways. None of this matters, as Stanley's trucks always seem to find a reason to make every illegal and unsafe decision in the book while bombing around the neighborhoods, honking and throwing the bird to anyone with an issue with their conduct on the roads. Challenging people to fist fights in the middle of the street while blocking traffic. Extremely unprofessional, aggressive and dangerous truck operators. Steer clear from this business. read more

These are the folks that showed up to tow my car from an accident, so I didn't have much of a choice in using them. They towed our car and the accompanying front bumper which was laying in the street. When we went to the tow yard to get our belongings from the car, the bumper (w/ license plate) was sitting on the hood of the car. However, they didn't send the bumper/plate to the repair shop, and though we followed up MULTIPLE times, they appear to have lost the license plate. We needed to get back on the road, and I didn't have time for this, so because of this tow shop, we needed to replace our license plates, registration, and all accompanying parking permits. So incredibly inconvenient and beyond unprofessional. Use someone else (if you have a choice). read more

When I got outside 5 minutes after my car was towed, a guy from Stanley's who was still there gave me a card and let me know where to get my car and how much it cost to get it back. However, after a few calls to the City of Boston and finally being redirected to Stanleys, it was a lot less painful than I expected! Sure, money is money, but I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the people at Stanleys was. After my car accident, when I had forgotten to remove the plates from my totaled car before the insurance company took it away (sniff) , they grabbed them for me.
