We walked in and it smelled kinda musty we had a really nice server it was is young girl with black hair she took our order and it was going really well because we got our drinks and everything we laughed and talked it was pretty empty though. There was a fly surrounding our table but that's ok. The food was good but we only got 4 out of the 7 dishes and the cook didn't even cook our food until we asked how the food was going and we stayed at the place for 1 hour and 35 minutes not cool. i don't recommend going here and just recommend going anywhere else read more

We are roadtripping from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. In the middle of nowhere is this restaurant that looks like it is in the middle of nowhere. We are traveling with an old dog and they were accommodating to help us keep him out of the heat. Super nice service all around. We stopped her for breakfast on our way home from the Black Hills Motor Classic. The wait staff was friendly and the food was good. It's definitely a locals place that had a lot of charm. We wanted to stop for lunch and there were not many options open. We decided to try this little family restaurant. when we walked in we were meet with a sign to please seat yourself and please be patient. The building was a little run down but the young waitress came right over to get us some water and let us know that they were out of grilled chicken. Not a problem there was plenty of options to choose from. She came back to tell us that they were also out of burgers, so we changed our orders slightly and waited. We did not wait long and the food was brought out. Fries were hot, the ranch dressing was dynamite, and the breaded chicken was juicy and flavorful. All of the dishes were spectacularly presented and looked like they came right off a page of a magazine. I would recommend stopping if in the area for breakfast or lunch. read more

Contrary to the AAA certification sign that suggests this locale may have peaked in 1967, I assure you that Star Family Restaurant is real, it exists, it's not closed, and they may serve breakfast all day. Where any living, breathing breakfast spot in random South Dakota is the question, Star Family Restaurant is the answer. The eggs taste like eggs, the french toast tastes like french toast, and I'm pretty sure our server may have been in seventh grade. But you know what? Don't care. I wish I could give Star Family Restaurant five stars, but unfortunately the very rude waitress killed 2 stars. It's was the first day of our family vacation and we wanted to grab breakfast. It's a cute little local dinner and we always try to find the local places when traveling. We did have a large group and called a head to confirm they'd be able to seat us. When we got there the restaurant was mostly empty but, filled up as we ate. I was shocked at how unfriendly the waitress was from the get-go. She never smiled and when our meals came, she banged our plates on to the table. The meals were good and the restaurant is a cute little dinner, so I'd say take a chance and hopefully you wont get the same waitress we had. read more

Stopped for breakfast... Decor was from the 50s, kitchy but nice. Service was solid; server was prompt, friendly and attentive. Ordered busquits and gravy, hash browns, and eggs. Food was delivered quickly and was hot. Hash browns were crispy and delightful. Busquits we're fresh and soft. Gravy was good, not great. Restrooms are in definite need of remodeling. They are very tiny, not well maintained and not very clean. Overall, a good place for breakfast but it is time for the Star to invest some money back into the restaurant. read more

I'd have checked in here, just so people would be sure i actually went, but there's no cell service at all in Murdo (well, enough that your phone cycles through zero bars and No Service, but never enough to even make a phone call). Anyway, Star Family Restaurant is to where we were directed when we asked at our hotel where we might be able to find a restaurant that didn't mind a toddler and had at least one vegetarian option. The staff is ridiculously nice, which is the status quo for this part of the country, but still appreciated. They have a veggie burger on the menu, and it's actually pretty decent. My dining companion was impressed with the buffalo burger, declaring it perfectly cooked and quite tasty. The pie was pretty good too, though by 6pm they were already out of banana cream. I feel back docking a star from this place, as i'm sure it's the best for miles around, and it's just the local culture, but... the fruit cup was just canned peaches. The lemon meringue pie somehow had marshmallow in the meringue. One of the salad bar offerings was described as 'pudding', and contained coconut, mandarin oranges, and marshmallows in some creamy base (possibly actually pudding, i didn't dare taste it for fear of developing diabetes on the spot). Anyway, yeah, if you find yourself hungry in Murdo, SD, you can do a lot worse than Star Family Restaurant. The apple pie is pretty good, and has no marshmallow-meringue. read more

Loved stumbling into this time capsule of a restaurant. It was like stepping back in time to the early 60's or so. The food was simple but well-prepared for what it was (hamburger and onion rings for me, fish sandwich and salad bar for my husband.) Thought we would support the local business instead of the restaurants along the interstate. I was hoping for homemade food but that's not the case here. Only thing that I would consider Real food was the mashed potatoes for my Hot Beef Sandwich, which was about the healthiest item on the menu. The beef was the commercial meat that is pre-sliced and liked put in the microwave to heat it up. Brown gravy is the powder that is mixed with water - very salty and fake tasting. Everything else was commercialized food. More expensive than what I would've thought. My husbands burger was smaller than the burger that came with my daughters kids meal? And the kicker - the kids menu said their meal comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. NO ice cream - all gone. they did offer fruit snacks - sorry but my kids will never eat that crap.
