We ordered our pulled pork baskets at the counter. The place is small and busy. They had a lot of cars in the drive through as well. Our names were called quickly. The pork sandwich was large. Pretty solid diner, I had the cheese steak and it was packed full of beef. Meat, peppers, and onions grilled up nice and hot. Not a ton of flavor, though. Definitely feels like a traditional diner. I walked in starving, and the male cashier was quick to help and explain things on the menu. BBQ is smoked and cooked for 13 hours, buns are made fresh everyday, etc. I ordered the BBQ basket with waffle fries and a drink. I was very impressed. Simple presentation, delicious food. Only reason for 4 stars was the taste of the BBQ sauce. I'm not sure if it's an automatic one they put on, or if I could change it. I prefer more of a tangy sauce, and this was a little different. We were in town to check out the South Dakota state capital while on vacation and decided to grab some lunch. There were several chain fast food places to choose from, but why do that when there is a local place like Big Tom's. It's not large or fancy but it is small and charming. When you step in there is a counter with the menu boards hanging on the wall. We were greeted by a nice man, not Tom, who took our order. They have a variety of items on their menu although I'm guessing some items are pre-made. I would suggest sticking to the items prepared "in house" and there were several of them. Based on other reviews, we opted for the double bacon cheeseburger with fries and were not disappointed. The burger was fresh, not a frozen patty, and huge. The bacon was crisp adding a nice crunch. The one thing missing from this place is ice cream shakes. It would have been nice to see fewer "food" options on the menu and add shakes to go with the great burgers. Focusing on a few things done well can go a long ways vs trying to satisfy every tastebud. Also it's important to note that Big Tom's also has a drive-thru option If you are not interested in stopping and eating inside. read more

Not sure what to make of this place. It is down home food and a diner feel. Staff was friendly but the food was well...all over. The ham and cheese was ok not great. The fries on several dishes were blah shoestring. The cowboy burger was pretty good with bbq and onion rings on a soft white bun the size of a small kitchen plate. The ribs fell off the bone and the eating party said they were good the potato salad was ok. The chicken tenders were just off on meat to breading ratio and as bland as any out there. The pulled pork sandwich was somehow on a soggy bun only 5 min after getting the food. The worst was the bbq sauce i gave several others to taste. Somehow it tasted dirty. I don't know how else to describe it. Honestly one of the worst bbq i have had but the coleslaw was good. Would say a but of a gamble on food so i would not say is a stop in to me. read more

This restaurant is a quaint little place with fifty's style decor lots of license plates and old signs. The service was quick quick and kind. The prices on things were fairly priced (full rack of ribs with one side for $16). They do NOT have the southerner burger which is actually a thing in Florida. They do have the cowboy which is about the same as a Burger King rodeo burger but higher quality. The reason for only three stars is the chicken strips were floury and not amazing which would be excusable, but the BBQ on both the ribs and the sandwiches tasted "dirty" like the grill hadn't been cleaned or something not enough to ruin the meal but not super amazing. I was very happy with both the coleslaw and potato salad the fries are shoestring and we're fine. If you are taking your food to go they do have silverware sets, plastic bags, and napkins for you. read more

I always forget about this restaurant. It's a favorite of my parents and one day they offered to pick up supper to celebrate after a soccer game we all attended and I said sure. I ordered the same as my son because I didn't know what to order and he and I have comparable tastes. I ended up with this gigantic jalapeño cheeseburger and fried pickles. I couldn't even finish it. A friend of mine kept telling me how great the baby back ribs were at this place so had to give them a shot! To start with I found they had a drive through...yes a drive through where you can get baby back ribs! Well I was very excited to try this place out. I pulled up to the drive through order place and sat for 2 minutes or so. (Was hoping for a quicker response time, but ok, ribs take a while and require consistent attention.) the order taker told me she would be with me in a moment...4 minutes later she was ready to take my order. Upon which she was interrupted at least twice as I recall while taking my order. AnywaY I ordered two full racks of ribs and 4 fries for my wife and two kids. The wait was lengthy at the pick up window and the window person was very obviously stressed. She handed me our order and off we went. When we got home and opened our containers, the "full" rack turned out to be "half" racks. Anyone knows a full rack is the whole rack. But not Tom. The fries were too stale to eat. The ribs not good at all. The sauce was terrible. Not sure what it's made of but I've eaten at a lot of good bbq joints across the country and this wasn't good. I wish I had taken pictures for you but we were so dissatisfied, it just didn't even occur to me. I think many of the locals actually do think this is good food because they've never had anything good in this town. It's not good but Tom seems to stay open so I'm glad someone likes his food. Not me for sure. If you're a foodie that likes good food, don't waste your time. Burger King down the street is much better quality and price then old Tom's. This place was just alright at best. Ordered a Philly Cheesesteak and it came out on a hoagie with pulled pork on it. Not as a mistake, but that is their version of a Philly Cheese. It also came with a green pepper, a mushroom and a small bit of cheese. Not enough cheese to keep it from being dry and I didn't know whether to put barbecue sauce on it or ketchup so I ate it dry. This is a great local place to eat. Full ice cream bar with folks working it who will create some unusual stuff. They also do their own barbeque.
