Star fish usually is the best fish in Boston. At first when the new management took over portions were bigger fish was thicker. I went there today 12/17/25 and the fish was horrible!!! The fish was under cooked and had dark brown spots on the fish from I'm guessing old oil. And the portions were small and the fish was so thin and was really nothing but fish batter. If I didn't have to return to work I would've returned it all and got my money back. I wish I took pix before tossing it in the trash and thinking to write this review. I called to tell them how horrible the fish was and they told me they were going to have the owner call me so I can express my experience. Hopefully the owner actually calls me. Today my mom wanted fish and chips so we decided to try Star's fishmarket and when I receive the haddock plates in the bag I thought it was a joke because the bag was so late I was wondering what was in it ....nothing. Though limited in dining-in space with perhaps 5 seats along a counter facing the parking lot and another 5 or so chairs placed by the 3 tables located across from the counter, there is quite a bit of breathing room once you enter through their doors. And good thing too, since business was brisk at lunchtime on the Saturday of my visit. It was a little confusing at first, however, since there was but the one fellow at the counter bagging the orders, so I wasn't sure how to go about placing my order. Turns out he was also the one to talk to about that. Unfortunately, however, since he was busy multitasking, he ended up taking the orders of the fellows who entered the establishment behind me first. Money did not change hands till the food was ready for pick up, and there is a sign posted mentioning their $10 credit/debit card minimum. Their fish sandwich is offered in a few variations: Whiting - Small $2.75; Large $4.25 Haddock - $4.05 (+30 cents for cheese) Porgy (with Bone) - Variable Price Mine was the Large Whiting with Cheese for $4.55 which made for a light yet satisfying meal. Finding whitings feels like hunting down a unicorn. After several phone calls to multiple markets I hit the jackpot with Star. The icing on the cake was not only do they sell fresh fish they also have a counter where you order it prepared (fried only). Ordered some fish to cook at home and also a sandwich. The prices were very reasonable and the fish was prepared perfectly. Crunchy, meaty, non greasy. Lip smacking good. One of the worst fish meals my family has ever had! For $50 we got two fish dinners. The scallops were so overcooked they were hard and dry. The french fries were cold yet burned and dry. So my friend & I were STARVING and too early for the Sam Adams Brewery tour. We wandered into the rather frightening neighborhood surrounding the brewery but stumbled upon this market. I'm not 100% sure this is the name of the actual place we went but am 95% sure and would love if someone could confirm this.... On one side, an African-American man was running a fish market where you could by fresh fish. On the other side of the counter was a place to order fried fish, fried shrimp, fries, etc. and was run by a Korean family. EVERYBODY was ordering mainly only one thing: the fish sandwich. I have thought about that sandwich every now & again when I think back on that trip to Boston. Drool.... And each sandwich was only like $2.50!!!! As my friend and I practically ran through the scary neighborhood back to the brewery, we sorely regretted only getting 1 sandwich each...it was...the perfect fish sandwich. We consumed them while they were still steaming and finished halfway back to Sam Adams while passing many liquor stores and check cashing places.... The breading of the fillet was flavorful and perfect....the meat was moist and juicy and sweet and delicious! They serve the breaded fish between regular bread you'd buy at the supermarket (square cut pieces of regular commercial store-bought bread) and wrap it up in white paper. Surprisingly awesome fried fish joint in the middle of Egleston Square. Five years ago you probably would have gotten stabbed trying to get to the place, but even Egleston is getting up with the gentrifyin'. It's got a ways to go, but now that the Stag is closed for business there isn't anyplace that pats you down before you enter. Back to Star FIsh: The fried scallops are freakin' amazing. Little balls of tasty mollusk. And, for being a deep fried and battered food item, it's oddly light and not greasy. I didn't get the usual I-wish-I-hadn't-eaten-all-that-fried-food stomach queasiness that usually hits me after a meal like this. The service can be a bit slow, but they have like, one dude back there doing all the frying, and there is always a line of folks waiting for their fish sandwiches. I have been going to this market since I was a young girl. The way cook their fish is good. However the quality of fish was usually hit or miss. Usually on every haddock dinner there are always a few pieces of questionable fish. I mean super thin fish that doesn't resemble haddock. I have never had haddock this super thin anywhere. The questionable fried pieces of haddock are about one quarter of a inch thick. The raw haddock is not like this, only the haddock you buy that's fried. There was always however, at least two pieces that were unquestionably haddock. The last two times I went the haddock plate had all extremely thin pieces. As I say it's like eating fried haddock cut like some thin sushi. As they cool on the plate they become extremely hard and unpleasant to eat. I have been going there for years and when I went in to bring it to the owners attention here's what happened. I called to let him know I was unhappy with the quality of the fish itself. Something was different. He told me if I didn't like it go somewhere else. Mind you I go there often one or two times a week. He always calls me by my name and is happy to have my business. When I get there I went to the raw fish section and got two pieces of haddock and asked him to cook them. He said NO. He then went on to tell me it would cost me thirty dollars extra to cook it. This man has been in our community for two decades. Now he doesn't even care to serve us decent fish. The haddock plate cost enough at least he could give us decent pieces of fish. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The owner treat his long standing customers like crap. And they serve sub standard fish on haddock plates. If I wanted fried haddock cut like thin sushi, I'd order it. He is ripping off the community. He does not care about good customer service or the people in the community. At this point all he cares about is the almighty dollar and serving substandard fish cuts to get it. He doesn't care anymore and he has lost a good customer because of it! Back in the late 90's, my uncles and I ordered food from here the day after my grandmother's funeral. The fried clams with bellies were juicy and sweet. While in Boston due to another death in the family, I thought we'd visit Star Fish again for that same experience. NOT! My stepmom and I just knew we were gonna have some steaming hot, crispy clams. My dad and I walked in and when it was our turn in line, I told the owner that I wanted a clams with bellies dinner. His response was, "Let me check." He came back to the counter and said I was good. Then, my dad wanted to order the same for my stepmom. He was told that I got the last order. So, he ended up getting fish sandwiches instead. After we got in the car, I cracked open my box expecting hot fries, crispy clams, and some cole slaw and tartar sauce. What I got was a total of 6 freaking clams, way too many fries, no bread, coleslaw or tartar sauce. 6 clams?!? Really? Never again. When I told family members what happened and where, they said the quality has dropped for years, and I would have been better off going to Simco's. Sigh. read more

My FAV FAST FRIED FISH !! I've been coming here since the 80's when the elevated train tracks ran outside, and they sold "Fresh Fish" on the other side. The fish has always been fresh, and fried just right. A many of days I've driven from Cambridge, Downtown, Copley, and past many $eafood restaurants in Boston ( except Kelly's in Revere) to get a sandwich ,clam , shrimp , or scallop boxes.
