TW: sexual assault conversation. 3 very rude and offensive young men working the front end and self checkout. As I was checking myself out I heard these boys (probably college age and clearly friends) talking about having sex with women and what is/isn't rape and talking loudly and openly in front of customers while laughing and making Rape jokes and talking about having sex with women. Then an older woman who appeared to be a manager came over and asked them to get back to work- which they did for about 15 seconds and then continued their offensive conversation. When I finished checking out I approached the manager (partly because I was afraid to approach the guys at that point) and told her that they were having this conversation right now. She was standing next to two other men who seemed to be In some sort of leadership position and. She smiled at me and said "oh okay, I'll take care of it".... Not phased AT ALL about what I just told her. She reacted like I just told her I spilt something in the aisle, so casually and not concerned. One of the guys said nothing and the other just said "oh I'm sorry". Both of them looked surprised in concerned but made no moves to speak further or do anything. I was so stunned that I walked away and when I looked back she had still made no move to speak to these boys and neither had the other two men Disgusting behavior by all of them. Shows their moral character honestly. A complaint has been filed and I Just wanted to inform the public to be safe there!! When I called customer service at that store directly, the women didn't seem surprised to hear this and said she knew who I was talking about despite me not having their names and she suggested I call to file a complaint read more

THESE PEOPLE ARE CON ARTISTS. Somehow, even in this huge grocery store, they never have anything I need. They move products around so frequently you have to go down every single isle to find what you're looking for -- great business idea if you're trying to get people to buy more than what they need, and incredibly annoying to the customer! They have the weirdest selection of products like ever? 4 million choices for eggs, but last time I went in the only type of cleaning liquid they had (ie cleaning spray, dish liquid, toilet cleaner, etc) was about 6 bottles of tide. Excuse me? They price their items as if they're a luxury grocery store and not the bane of everyone's very existence. INCREDIBLY expensive for normal items. Just picking up a few items to make dinner (and I frequently cook without meat) inevitably costs $30 each time. Again, con artists in pricing: they mark nearly every item as "on sale", when it's definitely just the regular price being illusioned as on sale so you feel like you're getting a deal. Their rewards program is ALSO a con. Rather than a regular grocery store, where you type in your phone number and it gives you the deals, you have to go on their app and "clip" the deals to get them. Such a pain in the a$$. I know someone who worked there. The reason why no one is friendly or helpful is because they have a really high turnover rate on employees since it's such a terrible work environment. A couple positives: Their "signature" brand is significantly cheaper than on brand items, and sometimes they're really quality products. Recently bought a pack of Dino gummies (similar to welch's fruit snacks), 10 for $2 (much below typical price of this type of item) and they had no artificial flavors or colors -- all derived from fruit juice. This is NOT the case for the more expensive competitors, which use harmful dyes like red 40. They have a fairly comprehensive beauty/health section. They'll rob you blind with those prices but they have a lot of variety so you don't have to go to a convenience store. read more

Everyone working here stared at me the whole time I was in here. Must be the Stare Market. Pretty cheap market in a pretty expensive neighborhood which has a pharmacy inside - which is a pretty good Pharmacy too. Definitely one of the better places to look for groceries in this area. Yeah it's not cheap but it's a lot cheaper than a lot of the alternatives and it's in a perfect area close to a lot of amazing food places too. read more

Very large market that was quite busy for 8pm on a weekday evening. They do have a huge selection here of ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat. I don't know that I've ever seen a supermarket with at Teppanyaki grill (they call it a "Noodle Bar") though it was closed this late in the day. Produce section was large but there were quite a few items out of stock. Same in the meat department (very low on chicken) and a few shelves in the grocery section had holes. Lots of registers open at the front including a self-checkout. Front-end management seemed engaged. read more

This Star Market location, formerly Shaw's, is the closest full-service grocery for us, but for most things we visit the Trader Joe's location in Brookline's Coolidge Corner. At the Commonwealth Ave. Star Market, over the past twenty years prices have climbed and quality has fallen. However, new management a few years ago gradually made some improvements. There are occasional quality items at reasonable prices. The Osco pharmacy, located on the side of the store away from Commonwealth Ave. and recently rebranded as "Star Market Pharmacy," provides good service, particularly for vaccines, although it has a smaller variety of prescription drugs than major pharmacies wuch as Wagreen's and CVS. read more

I typically stop by here after exercising and after all the renovations they've done I must say that this place is quite nice to shop in. Everything is well organized and well maintained. There's an organics section now which is new. Overall everything has a more "premium" air about it. Also it's nice not having to worry about having a loyalty card to get the special discounts. Parking is ample in the private lot out back and from what I've seen they have a little luggage shuttling system thingy (think airport) to bring groceries down below so you can pull up to it in your car and load everything in. (Dunno if it's still operational though since I've never used it). Also I'm a bit bummed that they completely got rid of the self checkout area (though in hindsight there was always something wrong with at least ONE of the areas leading to a massive bottleneck). read more

I was at checking out and loaded my groceries onto the belt. The young woman scanned all my groceries. I bought my own bags and started to bag them to speed things along. She saw that and asked if I need help. I am 75 and have a bad wrist. I said that would be helpful. she muttered out loud under her breath but loud enough so that I heard her that she really didn't want to bag for me. The following week I got her again, this time she never offered to bag. So I took my time doing it myself, meanwhile the line was backed up and other customers had to wait until I finished. She is the laziest person I've ever seen there. I hate shopping there but have no means of going to further markets. read more

When you are hungry at 3 am, this is the place to go. It's open 24 hours! There are a lot of sales on the meat on certain days, so I would often just stop by to check the prices, just in case. I don't have a family, so collecting the stamps they have to win kitchenware is nearly impossible. There is usually some sort of promotion where you get like 1 stamp per 10 dollars you spend and you need x amount to redeem for like a pan. If you are too lazy to cook like me, then their section on already cooked meals is quite good. Pretty big salad bar, fresh fried chicken, and some quick sandwiches to go. They often have frozen pizza on sale as well. It's usually clean overall. Probably my only gripe is that it is under staffed. So many check out lines but only 5 are ever used. Can be frustrating if you have like 50 college kids waiting in line. read more

Two stars for the following reasons -The prices are very high. Usually 1.5-2 times the equivalent items at Market Basket. -The quality of the food is very low. The only apples they sell are grainy. The Lucern Brand Milk I bought there tasted off the day I brought it home and curdled in less than a week. They don't have any good Cheese. -I frequently see very long lines and only half the checkstands open. You would think for what they charge, they could pay more cashiers. -Speaking of cashiers, some of them are pretty rude to the customers. The first time I came here after moving to Allston I walked up to a belt and set the basket down. The cashier said "Unpack your basket and put it there" pointing to the floor in front to the belt. A please would be appropriate in this situation. I am a paying customer. -I was shocked the first time I walked in here and received my groceries in those old fashion flimsy plastic bags. I didn't know they were still allowed in Mass. I guess they were only outlawed in Cambridge and Somerville. The cashiers always double them without thinking. I bought one loaf of bread once. Automatically put in double plastic bags. Seriously, the bread itself is already in a plastic bag. Now I have a cabinet full of the crinkly useless plastic which makes me feel like I am living in a red state again. I continue to shop here a few times a week when I just need a couple of items because I feel it isn't worth going all the way to Somerville Market Basket for just a couple of items. I try to stock up at Somerville Market Basket weekly or every two weeks so that I can minimize my Star Market Shopping. This location gets two stars instead of one because it is open 24/7 so I don't have to worry about getting back from work in time when I need something. Also because it looks clean...... I've been living right down the street from this Star Market for about 6 months now, and finally decided to go. I was avoiding based on past experiences with other Star Markets. This location is different! Fast, important facts: 1. They have parking!!! A huge lot in the back. 2. Open 24 hours! 3. They have a beer/wine store inside. This Star Marker is just finishing up remodeling so the store feels new and looks attractive. Differences that stood out to me at this location versus others was the speciality cheese section, the to-go prepared foods section, and how large this Star Market is. Walking down the aisles, it doesn't feel like you're in a city supermarket. The aisles are wide and shelves are tall and full. Star Market is no Market Basket price-wise, but they did have some good sale prices. The produce selection could have more variety. Overall, I got all that I needed. Be prepared to carry everything you bought out to your car. There's no taking shopping carts outside! read more

Order a delivery but the driver is no show and never got the items. No proof of delivery picture. Call the customer service but no one knows happened. Not my fault but I still have to wait for the refund 5-7 business days. Feel unsafe to order here. The driver may have taken all the items or he didn't even delivered it at all. This supermarket is massive! I was really impressed with the sheer size and their convenient hours -- it's opened 24/7! However, I found it to be more expensive than other supermarkets though, but not at the Whole Foods price level...just more costly than than it should be for regular goods. Since this place is right along the B line where I live, I often go here when I need a few things or when I need something that I can't find at Trader Joe's. This particular store is huge and spacious-- you literally can find anything that you need. Aisles are clearly labeled so it's never an issue navigating through. Check out is always quick and efficient and have not had any bad experiences here. Will continue coming here! read more

We walk here all the time, but I was quite appalled with the cashier today. He was checking me out but Right before he has his fingers in his mouth and biting his nails. This was really my worst experience at star market (shaws). Please make sure your employees are well aware of INFECTION CONTROL. I am regular customer here despite the increasingly empty spaces on the shelves and the deplorable condition of the physical facility. I only buy on line what I can't find here because I like to support businesses in the neighborhood. But today that changes. I was there at 4:45 on a Thursday looking for individual spare ribs to make Chinese style. They had none that were pre cut but did have a full rack. I asked the man at the meat counter to please cut them and he flat out refused. No, there were no other customers in the area waiting, so nobody would have been delayed if he had done that. Because of his attitude, from now on I will be buying a lot more on Amazon and a lot less here. read more

Unprofessional worker - Got into a minor conflict (no physical nor aggressive words) with a typical Boston KAREN while checking out. An African American female worker approached and started pointing fingers at me like I was not a customer, although I have been shopping here for SIX-YEAR. Obviously, she does not know how to ease the situation and solve conflicts. Need to train the staff on how to treat customers equally instead of siding with one and flaming on another. read more

They have perhaps the largest Ala cart section of any Supermarket I have seen. Food is good and fresh. Plenty of cashiers to ring you up and if memory serves me correctly, they have self service cash registers too. Bathrooms are clean but have those annoying blow dryers that don't dry your hands well enough and make WAY too MUCH noise! They have a parking lot across the street which was free to park the 5 times we went there. Summary: For a supermarket in the big city this store fills the bill. read more

2.5 Stars. I had heard good things in the past about their sushi chef and I still like their bakery, and I have to say that they had a great selection of items, but in terms of pricing and customer service and the quality of their customer service, this is not one of my favorite Stars. They have a Starbucks inside, and they have free parking in the back, so this is a plus for folks with families and who need to pick up a lot and are still in or near Boston, but it's not the only Star/Shaw's with good parking, so, keep that in mind. Don't expect to save much over a Whole Foods at this location, though their selection is much better (minus the organics, of course) and I don't think this location will win any customer service awards anytime soon, but if you are nearby anyway, and need to grab something quick, and are in a vehicle or don't care what anything costs, then by all means, come on in. read more

I hate, hate, hate this Shaw's, but I use them anyways. Convenience is about all they have going for them, being situated directly on top of the B line. I agree that they are horribly overpriced for their products, but they do have all the name brands that I am unfortunately addicted to. I truthfully see no price difference between them and Whole Foods. Service would vastly improve in my eyes, if their associates were more professional and accommodating, and their prices were lower. Update: I went in today (Saturday) and as I was checking out, I asked the cashier to ask someone to help me bag, because I was very sick. She just looked at me and said yes, then went on throwing all my stuff past the scanner and into the end of the table. When she was finished with me, she she pushed my stuff over to one side and then started to check out the lady behind me! I was packing up my stuff by this point, and I was so mad. I have purchased quite a bit at their store, and the least they could do was to help me bag it. This used to be mandatory at stores, having someone bag your groceries. Why not anymore? read more

HUGE supermarket for being right in the middle of the city. Produce is expensive ($4.50 for a small bag of sugar snap peas? What am I, Warren Buffett? I haven't seen a single example of cleaning or sanitizing throughout the entire store, and today, he had his hands all over every single item in my cart while I was in the self checkout area because I had asked for help with one coupon. Typical supermarket. This is what you come to expect for a supermarket. Large, spacious, and always stocked. You will find all of your national brands here. I have rarely seen them run out of anything except for during crazy sales on frozen and canned goods that all the college students snatch up. Typically only BU kids come here, but some BC students still seem to venture out as it is on the B line. The store is so big that it never gets packed and lines usually aren't that long. Self checkout is available before midnight. Customer service is a bit lacking, but I've never had that much of a problem here. Usually more expensive than Trader Joe's, this supermarket does have weekly circular sales. Their sales don't vary too much, but enough to get by. Typically I shop produce/fruits, dairy, and alcohol at TJs and I'll buy meat, snacks, and frozen food at Shaws. The deli and seafood counters are not open at night time. Most of the household supplies are also cheaper here than at TJs or CVS/convenience stores. There is parking here, but its in the back. It is a free lot. It is, however, slightly annoying that the store is on a hill and the parking is one floor down and shopping carts aren't allowed to be taken out of the store. The back door is also locked after midnight. I'm always hesitant to use the free drive up service because I always feel like I need to tip the guy and I don't always carry cash. Best part of this store is it is open 24/7. That is a rarity in Boston for anything and I have yet to find a full grocery store that does the same. Be careful with night time scanners, especially on Thursday/Friday when the prices are flipped to the next week. read more

This is my first review. I know, it's Shaw's, so boring, but I am here at least once a week so I am just gonna go with it. For those of us who eat gluten free, this place is surprisingly stocked with goodies. In addition to all the conventional items (eg vegetables, ice cream, dairy, etc), the Wild Oats section offers a wide selection of gluten free salad dressings, marinades, cookies, cereals, and baking supplies. I have to admit that I'm not much of a cook, so I gravitate towards the natural frozen section - Ian's Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets, omigosh, amazing. The Shop the World aisle is full of Thai rice dishes and condiments, so stock up on the Taste of Thai or Thai Kitchen noodle bowls. The downfall, of course, is that eating gluten free is expensive, and you will probably not find everything you are looking for in just one place. But it's great to know that if I really want gluten free brownies, I can pick up a mix at the "normal" grocery store. The absolute worst thing about the Allston Shaws, however, is the Self Check-out line. I understand if you've never used it before, but come on! Talk on your cell phone whilst scanning your 30 items - you're 15 over the limit anyway so might as well take your time right? Please, giggle with your friends about how you don't know what the unidentified item in the bagging area is. Call over the non-existant manager to authorize your debit card because you selected the wrong payment type. There are always a few of these people ahead of you in line, so beware! Also, make sure to check out the cookie cakes in the bakery section. Really, just look. You'll thank me. read more

Shaw's: the perfect balance between no-breathing-room-arms-and-legs-everywhere at Trader Joe's and paying out the nose at Whole Foods. I regularly stop in here to pick up my lunches, milk, and such, and I have always found Shaw's to be clean, well-lit, and relatively well-staffed. However, if you must come here on a weekend, I strongly recommend shopping before noon, as it can get very busy in here. At all other times, this is a great place for a single guy with not a lot of things to purchase to stock up. Plus, you can sometimes find deals with the Shaw's Card on things you were going to buy anyway. The fresh produce here is pretty good, particularly the oranges and bananas. Whereas other stores feature lots of bruised oranges and worse-for-wear bananas, Shaw's tends to maintain good quality control. One tip: if you're walking here from Comm. Ave., approach on the westbound side. Otherwise you'll have to cross both Comm. Ave. and Brighton Ave. to get there (unless you want to walk all the way up to Babcock St. to cross over.) read more

This particular Shaw's is gigantic and clean, so two stars there. However, Shaw's in general (and probably moreso in Boston) is absurdly expensive, espeically when it comes to anything remotely healthy (and we blame the country's collective weight problem on fast food restaurants....that makes sense). I sometimes buy the Optimum line of cereals at Whole Foods, where they're $2.69. They're a whopping FIVE DOLLARS at Shaw's! Seriously?? I can understand being a little more expensive since they probably don't carry as large a stock as a health food-oriented store like Whole Foods does, but TWICE as much?? And I'm not even a huge Whole Foods fan! I usually only shop at Shaw's for things that are on sale, but even so, I usually have a "I spent THAT much??" reaction rather than the typical "is that all??" reaction at Trader Joe's. read more

It's a Shaws--not much to say--'cept for some random tidbits that hopefully will be useful to someone where in the future. It's open 24/7 and has parking-- both really useful. So here's my $0.02. Random Tidbit #1: There aways seems to be some brand of potato chips that's on sale, so I've gotten in the habit of only getting chips that are on sale (with a Shaws card of course). This helped me find out that I actually enjoy potato chips that are only "lightly salted" which I never used to pay attention to. Random Tidbit #2: I really like getting supermarket rotisserie chicken as a spontaneous dinner, but the chicken here tends to be pretty dry. I imagine it's just bad timing though--under those heat lamp rotisserie chicken would dry up anywhere. Random Tidbit #3: After passover, they put all the kosher for passover food near the entrance. You tell which kosher for passover foods are actually good and which ones are just things that people have to eat during passover based off of which items are marked down in price. Example 1: soda with real sugar (as opposed to corn syrup) same price during and after passover--people are going to buy this stuff regardless. Example 2: Matzah--dirt cheap after passover (50% off)-- Matzah is little more than edible cardboard and no one willingly eats it unless is passover, or (hopefully for Shaw's sake) if it's dirt cheap. Random Tidbit #4: One night (past midnight), we wanted to get caviar so we went to this shaw to get it. We asked an employee if they knew where to find it and they said that they didn't carry it. But then as we were wandering the store, we found them right by the canned sardines, no less. So that night, we dined on caviar. On average a positive experience and an informative one--don't expect the owl shift employees to know the inventory-they don't get paid enough to work those hours and know where to find obscure fish-related items as well.
