The staff is semi-friendly, just depends on who you get. I used to go regularly (bi-weekly) for months and never had an issue! Obviously there will be the ones that break a little too easily or one starts to lift early, but other than that I've always been satisfied! Not sure of the name of the young man who gave me my pedicure, but did not speak or understand English. I requested before he even started NOT to clip my big toenails as I've had multiple ingrown nails, please just file. He proceeded to clip the corners of my left toe, and after asking him 2 or 4 more times to not do this, he acknowledged and then did the same on my right toe. Never assumed he just didn't get it. So now I'm battling the same ingrown problem again, as the short edges start to grow out. Never again will I come again to this salon. I went to Star Nails once for a pedicure and had a good experience so I decided to go on 7/5 for a pedicure and full set (acrylic) they had a pretty long wait time but everyone was working and they were busy so I was trying to be patient. My pedicure was rushed and I did not get square cut like I asked. My nails looked ok so I paid and left. Once I got home and really looked, I was disappointed with the shape and look of my nails. It is now 7/7 and my thumb nail is lifted underneath and I have a bunch of hardened acrylic under my nails on both hands. I was there for over three hours and did not receive satisfactory service. So I went in today (7/7) and politely asked for a refund. They insisted on fixing my nails and I said did not want them to fix it. That I did not have a good experience and would prefer to just have a refund. They refused. When I asked why I could not get a refund they said they don't do that. There is no sign up that says no refund. They could see and agreed that my nails were not looking good but still refused a refund. So I left. read more

The lady that did my nails was extremely rude. Not only did she mess up my nails. I stopped her before she got to the designs and I paid and just left. I was so upset. Not only did she ruin my full set but she burned my foot and laughed about it when she told me to go sit down for my pedicure. Then continued gaslighting me and saying that it was my fault. I told her that it would have been nice for her to say something about the water being scorching hot before I sat down and put my foot in after she told me to! Then the other nail lady at the salon tried to justify her actions by saying "oh she doesn't speak much English"... um? She spoke enough English to tell me it was my fault I burnt my foot and that I should have known it was boiling hot! Don't go here. This place is an absolute joke and disgusting. Go to Paris nails. They do not honor appointments. I tried this establishment back in June for a mani-pedi for my birthday, and I had made an appointment ahead of time. Unfortunately I was not started until roughly 20-30 minutes after my original appointment time, and when moved to start soaking for my pedi, was left soaking for another probably 10ish minutes. I gave myself ample time to enjoy myself because I had another appointment following this, but it turned into a 50 minute (for mani AND pedi) rushed event, leaving me more stressed than relaxed. They didn't do a bad job with the nails themselves, but the experience wasn't great. It was busy back then with re-opening, so that's why this week, I tried them out again as I'm trying to find a new consistent place. Folks, I was not helped until 30 minutes past my appointment time, leaving me in the same predicament as above. I am not 100% sure on this, because they did not communicate at all, but either they overbooked or took a walk-in before my scheduled appointment. I really needed my nails done, so I stuck it out. When I told them I needed a mani done in 45 minutes because of this issue, I was given a half-apology and an excuse of being low on nail techs. I would've been way more understanding if this info was given to me when I walked in. Maybe this is a good thing, but they did start being more communicative with people who walked in after me. However, they offered no discount or anything. I was disappointed, again. I gave this review 2 stars because the mani itself wasn't done super bad with it having to be rushed; there are a couple nit picky things like some nail length being uneven and the colors being slightly off due to powder. But it's safe to say I will not be returning. I wish I had listened to the other reviews before deciding to try it out again. read more

The one thing that will always stand out to me is that one of the female technicians tried to bounce me from her chair during a full set to take one of her usual's. She had put the nails on and clipped them somewhat to my liking then told me to move to another station and wait for the other technician to be done with someone else. I could not believe it! Her usual customer was like no, I'll go get a tan first and come back, you can finish up. If her customer wasn't so observant and polite, I think I would have walked out without even paying for my pedicure. YOU DO NOT DO THAT TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. I was so frustrated with her that I didn't even want to look at her face. I almost wanted to cry even. I've been through a lot with my father recently dying and was just trying to relax and take care of myself. I've been here a few times before and had a good experience. Especially with the male technician. However, I will NEVER go back her because of how I was treated. PS: I think nail salons in Kalamazoo can be a little racist sometimes or more willing to take money from white women over women of color (It's all green honey and I'm a great tipper IF you treat me well and have skill). Not sure if this is what happened, but it's something I've noticed throughout the years of living in Michigan. I walk in 5 minutes early and Kim is 5 minutes into another manicure. They will tell you it's only 15 minute wait (this time I was told 25 minutes) it's always longer. Ridiculous. I rarely write reviews, but this occasion left a bad taste in my mouth. I came in this past Friday with my sisters for a fun day of mani/pedis the day before my sister's wedding. She had scheduled an appointment the day prior. When I called that afternoon to confirm, I was told they had no such appointment on their books, but it wouldn't be a problem. We show up, and it's fairly busy, but no big shocker. They seat us in the pedicure chairs, and then quickly pull my SIL to the mani chair.. while my sister and I are still getting pedis. Next goes my sister. Suddenly, I'm all alone at the spa, as they both finished up over an hour before I did. We went there for an experience, with champagne, to celebrate this occasion. Not only were we spilt up, but my nails were done terribly. I never get manicures, but was convinced the dip was the way to go... and now I'm staring at this absurdly thick, uneven, poorly shaped situation on my hands. I've heard great things about this place and most of the women in my family go here, so perhaps it was an isolated incident.. but something that was supposed to be a ton of fun for the bride to be and her sisters was just an expensive mess. As an update. I have now spent the last HOUR with my nails soaking in acetone, after a 20 minute cotton ball/foil wrap, and this WILL NOT COME OFF MY NAILS. I have always spoke highly of this salon because of the friendly staff and amazing nail designs I've always had from here. Unfortunately today the service I received was far from friendly, even my 11 year old asked if we made the tech mad that was doing my nails because she seemed annoyed with us. So first time coming in here and not even a hello. Immediately "what do you want?" and "pick your color." So blunt and straight to business nothing wrong with that. I searched through all the colors, but due to strenuous work, I knew it wouldn't last long. I simply asked for a French manicure with regular polish. The staff tried to get me to buy the shellac several different times...Even though I said no several times. Eventually they gave up and the work on the French manicure began. The cuticle cutting actually hurt! I'm not sure if the nail technician was upset, because I didn't get shellac or not, but totally unprofessional. Then I got a hand and arm massage with the deal. Little did I know I was gonna be playing tug of war with my own arm. The massage felt like yanking and squeezing. I had to end that massage quick and tell the technician its uncomfortable. They didn't really care too much, only grabbing a gooey white nail polish. When it didn't come out like it should. (this stuff looked like it had been sitting out for a long time.) they check several drawers and finally, home run. Again they insist on the shellac, and I remind them I'm not interested, as no matter what the nails will chip. Shellac may last for an extra two or three weeks. But if you have ever stubbed your toe and your stuck in that silent pain. Remember that feeling times two when shellac cracks. So I stood my ground and got my normal polish. As the pictures show, the nail polish was put on so sloppy and uncaring. Every time the nail tech dipped it in the clear coat, some polish would splash at me. So I asked that person to just stop and someone else helped me instead. That person didn't seem to care I had to ask someone else to fix it, they just got on their phone and played the rest of the time. Although they did a better job, I was still left with so much extra polish bits on my hands and even my Arms. The shop is cute and relaxing though. read more

I've been to Star Nail several times but after my most recent experience felt compelled to write a review. I got my first gel/shellac manicure here and loved the selection and expertise of my nail tech. Now I know shellac is supposed to last a long time which Is why I chose it. About 4 days after my manicure I tore out the carpet and laid hardwood in my new house, and my nails look as good as the day they were done.
