This place is a health hazard. I visited this place for the first time on Sunday. I received a gel pedicure. That night, I woke up in pain. The next day, I could not walk. I am writing this 2 days after the pedicure barely able to walk. I have received years of regular manicures and pedicures at different nail salons and have never known this to be possible. I had to go to urgent care and was told by doctors that I needed to keep monitoring in the case of an infection, but that they believed the pain and swelling was due to inflammation from the cuticle work this nail salon has done. I called the salon to politely tell them what happened to me. I was gaslit, told to come in (when I can't walk???), and even after seeing the pictures, Lan told me that it looked more like I had stubbed my toe than it was her fault (I did not stub a toe and would have known if I did). Unless you really enjoy going to a hospital, do not visit Star Nails. read more

I've been here twice: once for a pedicure & shellac manicure (I'm from California, I guess it's called a gel UV manicure or just gel here?) and again for another manicure. The place is tucked away and only has a few seats for patrons but they get the job done. They use OPI & Essie polish which is always a plus in any salon. They also offer waxing. I think it's affordable and will continue to come back! Gel Mani/Reg. Pedi $60 Manicures range from $15-30 unless you are doing acrylics and then I'm not sure. Tips in CASH only. I have nothing but GREAT things to say about Star Nails. First of all, they closed at 7 and Lan stayed open til I got there (around 7.45) to do my manicure because I wasnt able to come in the next day and HAD to get it done. Second, Lan was sweet, so accommodating and did a great job. I have been hooked on OPI gel nails because they dont chip and look good all the time- but some other places I have gone to have made them peel/chip faster. I can safely say I am on week three without a chip in sight. They look amazing and were well worth the $30 (which is an AMAZING bargain in this city!) Tina gave me acrylics with shellac and they turned out beautifully! I was so impressed by her craftsmanship as well as how friendly everyone was in the salon. It was a little tricky to find at first (in the bottom floor of the outdoor mall area), but definitely was worth the effort! I will be back to star nails again soon! read more

I moved out of the NW hood awhile ago but make my way back here for 99% of my mani-pedis because the value and service can't be beat. Love all the gals and love their work. Clean and painless acrylics and the woman who did them didn't get annoyed with me asking her if she was sure she got everything filed and if she had the right size nails for me (I know, I'm that person. I went here the day before spring break for GWU began. Therefore, they were SUPER busy. But despite them being insanely busy, they were able to accommodate everyone and if they couldn't, they were upfront about it and told walkins when they could come back. If you made a reservation, they respected it. I got a manicure and pedicure with my friend. When requesting a nail design, they said that no one was there to do it. They ask you to get up and wash your hands after they do the oil treatment, and they use a fan to dry nails during the process. Besides those, the nail specialists are very nice and accommodating. This salon is THE BEST I have come across so far in the downtown D.C. area! It is located on the lower level of the Watergate building where the shopping area is. Lan is my preferred technician because she KNOWS what she is doing, and exactly what treatments I need in order to feel pampered. The technicians are all very friendly and customer service oriented. I am always greeted with a smile and made to feel welcome when I step inside this salon. I usually go in for a manicure/pedicure, and I have never had any problems with these services. The salon is clean and well-kept, and is often busy so be sure to call ahead for an appointment! EEWWWW! literally WORST pedicure of my life... The guy (he actually looked like a 12 year old) did my pedicure in like 2 minutes. They also don't really clean the pedicure area well, so I was pretty shocked. I'm a freak about nail salons being clean, so just because of this I'm never getting a mani/pedi at Star Nails again. I went to Star Nails yesterday for the first time. I went towards the end of the day and did not have an appointment. They happily fit me in, although I did have to wait at least 30 minutes (my advice is to ask how long you'll have to wait if they tell you that you'll have to wait because I didn't ask and I wasn't really expecting to wait 30+ minutes). I had a Shellac manicure and an eyebrow wax. My manicure looks really nice (no polish on my skin) and I'm happy with my eyebrow wax. The reason why I'm giving four stars and not five is that my Shellac manicure was $30 and although my nails themselves look great, the manicurist hardly massaged my hands and arms (she didn't even ask me to remove my watch or rings), so I thought the massage/moisturizing part of the manicure was definitely lacking. All in all, I was happy with the services and I will return. read more

*Note: I'm editing this down to 1 star from my original 3. The polish job was so bad that within a few hours the polish separated and now there are spots all over it. I'm debating whether to call the salon and ask for a refund or a re-do or just go over and let them see for themselves.* I get polish changes b/c I don't need manicures for the most part, and polish changes are significantly cheaper. I came here twice. The first time was great, they spent a lot of time with me and my nails came out well. When I came in today I need not have the same experience. I had to wait a while (they said 5 min but it was more like 15) and the girl did not file my nails, did a sloppy job removing my existing nail polish and I kept having to point to places she missed. There is also old nail polish smeared all over my fingers. She didn't use enough base coat and did a rushed and half-a**ed job painting my nails. I was pretty annoyed but decided not to mention anything b/c it's cheap ($7 for a polish change) so I figured I may want to go back and just be sure I have a different technician and didn't want to be labeled a complainer. But yeah, I could have painted my nails and gotten the same results, and that's not saying much! read more

Kim took excellent care of me- and even allowed me to stop after she cleaned and buffed my feet so that I could go to a dental appointment. Before coming to DC, I had done some pretty extensive research on nail and waxing salons in the area. This salon had the best location, as it is closest to my place of residence, and it also had very competitive prices. I am used to paying very low prices to get my eyebrows done, so while this ($12) is a little more than what I am used to, it is still great for DC. The other day, I went to get my acrylic nails filled, and had a very good experience. The Good: Lan was extremely polite, nice, and knew exactly what I wanted. My acrylic nails were the perfect length, and she did a wonderful job shaping them so that they look very natural, and not fake at all. Also, even though she had to take off my old ones and put on new ones, she only charged me $26 dollars. For an acrylic fill, it is normally around 20, but for an entire new set, it is usually 30. She took into account the fact that I am a student, and decided not to charge me full price, especially since I had come in asking for only a fill. She went above and beyond my expectations. I am going back there to get my eyebrows done, and if that goes well (as I expect it will), Star Nails will become my regular salon. Everyone who works there is also nice and polite; I did not experience any unpleasantness. Also, the place is very neat and well-kept. It is by no means a fancy salon, but for a small place, it is great. The Not So Good: That all being said, I did have to wait a little while to get my nails done. I had called the previous day to make a time to come (I would really recommend you do this), and I was on time. When I arrived, Lan was in the back doing a waxing job (I assume). I was scheduled to be taken at 11:30, but it was past 11:50 by the time Lan actually got around to me. However, she did come out of the back to apologize for the wait and to ask me (very politely) if I would mind waiting a little longer. I was in no rush, so I was alright with this, but I don't recommend walking in when you don't have a lot of time to spare. Also, Lan takes into account your schedule. There was a woman who came in after me whose kids were waiting for her in the car, and she just wanted to get an eyebrow wax (which takes about 5 to 10 minutes). Lan politely asked me if the woman could go ahead of me, so I said yes. She was done very quickly, and when she returned to begin doing my nails, she was very polite and apologetic. I don't really like to wait, but Lan was so polite that I didn't mind. Also, keep in mind that this is a busy place, and there aren't a lot of techs, so some delay is certainly forgivable. In conclusion, I would certainly recommend this place to anyone who asks. read more

ok i did not have the same experience stef had. first of all, i came in without an appointment. when i went in there were three techs, three people being serviced, and two people waiting. i told them what i wanted and they said fine and told me to wait. i waited with the other 2 women. they eventually put me in a pedi chair and left me to soak while the techs finished. by the time they finished, 15 minutes had passed and i was completely waterlogged. so anyway, when a tech is available for me, three customers come in and say they have a 430 appointment for pedi/mani (keep in mind, the three techs just started on me and the two other women, and it was 430). so, my tech, whose name i dont know, did my mani and pedi in about 10 minutes. i am not exagurrating. she had no trouble hardly giving me any attention at all just so she could hurry up and get done with me. i finished WAY before the other 2 women who were waiting when i got there. how ridiculous. i will not be back. needless to say, the paint job sucks, it's already chipped, and she didn't remove any cuticle. she also didn't paint all the way down the nail so it looks like i have stubby nails. you can have all this for 41 dollars. i will never be back to star nails. read more

Star Nails is located in the Watergate and they do a great french mani. Their pedicures are fine and it's really clean inside. The only issue is that it's filled with GW undergrads and people in on their lunch hour, so it's better to have an appointment if you're not able to wait. read more

I had never been to this salon, but was looking for a location that was affordable for students. I made appointments online for my friend and I, to celebrate her birthday the next day. The system said there was availability at 3:30, so I made two appointments at that time. I got an email from the system that only showed a reservation for one appointment, so I called them, and learned that the salon was actually closed that day. They kept trying to reschedule, and I said that wouldn't work because this was for her birthday celebration. I asked if someone could call me, and they said "maybe." I am not impressed, and if you make an appointment online you should call them to make sure they are not randomly closed. read more

This is a simple, straightforward establishment that does amazing nails. The technician was not hash and did a PHENOMENAL job. For an opaque color, the paint job was perfect (very smooth) and much much better than opaque color paint jobs I've had at other supposedly higher end salons. Technician was also very detailed and gave each of my nails a mini scrub. Love this place. Do not let the simplicity fool you into thinking you won't get an amazing manicure here. read more
