world of macchiato - starbucks byres road 8/10
    Steph S.

Sweet Spot: The optimum point or combination of factors or qualities Ah, Starbucks! Loved, hated? I'm usually indifferent, but today it hit me in a pretty warm place. It seems every Starbucks has its 'sweet spot'. You know? No queue, coffee good, Gotye isn't bleeding from your ears and the staff are just cheery enough, but not overly so. Could it get any better? Probably, coz it comes at a price. (But I'll take it anyway) Unfortunately Byres Rd Starbucks' sweet spot is between the absurd hour of 06.45am and 06:55am. The Subway takeaway rush hasn't happened, the students are still in dream land, the yummy mummies are still struggling with their exhaustion and there're no god-damn Frappe's being served. I have to admit it was a "Yay! I'm a fan"! Although that's time conditional of course...

This is one of my go to places for those "I've had lunch but my lunch break isn't over and I want a coffee" moments. I know that Glasgow has a fantastic range of independent coffee shops and that the West End of Glasgow is particularly blessed but sometimes Starbucks just feels easy. Plus, I have the Starbucks app on my phone and it's easier to justify spending money on a coffee if you've technically already spent that money. Usually I'm a grab and go kind of gal and lunch time is probably their busiest time of day, so getting a seat could be tricky anyway. However, if I have a bit of extra time I'll sit in - usually upstairs or near the back of the ground floor level where it's quieter. Layout and seating-wise, it's much like any other Starbucks. It seems a bit small when you go in (it's weirdly long and thin) but the upstairs seating makes it adequate in that respect. The thing that elevates this particular branch of Starbucks is definitely the staff. They are so friendly and attentive and, as long as they don't have a huge long line, they're very happy to chat and joke away with you. They don't mind quirky orders and I've always found that they get them absolutely right. They're the best - Starbucks doesn't deserve them. I like the range of food and that it includes a few "healthier" options for when a massive flavoured latte, a bacon sandwich and a health-hazard size slice of chocolate cake doesn't seem like a well-balanced plan. However, even the lower calorie options are mostly still a bit high - it would be great if they offered a wider range of salads and fruit. You're definitely going to get West End types here, using the free WiFi and hogging the plug sockets with their Macbooks while they work on their novel. You know what? That's ok. There's free WiFi and coffee - of course people are going to want to work here. I want to work here and I'm not even a novelist. You'll find me upstairs near the back, hogging a plug socket.

We all know I love a Starbucks This branch looks a lot smaller from the outside, one of those tardis moments Stretches out to the back with seating and more upstairs, where most of the younger coffee drinkers seemed to be heading The tables were little red with left over coffees and even cake..... Who doesn't eat all their cake.... I hope they fall in a puddle the despicable people Anyway unfortunately it is a busy branch so the cleaning is left as a last scenario after they finish with the customers ....They will never finish ..... They just keep coming Tables were choc full of Apple laptops and iPads, you would be forgiven in thinking they moved the branch of Apple from Buchanan street to here I sat at a table and took out my iPhone not one to bring an action in to the pit of Apple and risk possible dismemberment, took a snap and settled down to enjoy my coffee and the cool jazz music Whig floated like a welcome wave out over the drum of keys and idle chat of the weather and what's for dinner

I feel obliged to mention that I very rarely frequent Starbucks, and this is even more so the case with Starbucks other than this one. You see, for all it's chain induced (or should I say forced?) glory I really like THIS Starbucks. It's tiny! The outside consists only of the four feet wide shop front, yet instead it stretches pretty far and there's even an upstairs. This means that it's not usually that busy, so you're almost guaranteed to be able to find a seat if you want one. Similarly, you'll often get to occupy your very own small Starbucks section and not need to overhear other people wittering away. As for the products and prices, they are the standard Starbucks deal so no unexpected surprises will crop up. All in all, a lovely little Starbucks with a little bit more character than other branches and very handy for a quick coffee on the way to/from Hillhead underground.

I thought I would pop in here, as had not been here for a long time. Well. Not since me and an old friend had been chatting to a Spanish girl drinking here. This has got to be one of the cleanest of Starbucks. The staff are lovely. And being next to Hill-head station, it's a great wee place. Great place to relax once you have walked up and down this road. And it attracts all walks of life.

The solution in Glasgow is to forget boring run-of-the-mill 'full' anythings for breakfast or brunch and go to Papercup instead. I don't even drink coffee, which they are known for. I need to try a hot chocolate here one of these days. My friend ordered an oat milk one on this visit and said it tasted like a dessert in itself. Vegan, veggie, or gluten-free? No problem. Papercup has you covered. I've come here on multiple occasions and requested gluten-free bread without anyone batting an eye. Most American restaurants seem to want to make you feel like a criminal to even ask. My egg omelette on this visit had so many yummy toppings and was so big, bread wasn't even needed. It's a wonder these wizards can make such creations in such a small space! We happened to nab the corner table directly across from the cake case and I watched as our food was made with so much love. A drizzle of sauce, a squeeze of lime...this is the kind of place you want to get behind because they treat you like part of the family. Caveat: this place is small and you'll want to go at downtimes if you can (avoid breakfast/brunch on the weekends, for example) or else you'll be stuck outside waiting for a table to free up. You'll see locals popping in for their usual coffee orders and a muffin, then pop back out. For such a small shop, they have an oddly large unisex bathroom in the back. I remember the first time I had to use their facilities and being pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the size of a closet like you'd find in London. But let's face it, a place like this wouldn't exist in London in the first place, would it?

They will be open later in the evening than some other places - I think he mentioned 6 or 7pm but can't remember which! I only had a cappuccino and a chat with the guy running the place but the service was warm and friendly and the coffee was excellent. Competition for the also excellent CC&T a block along and The Hidden Lane Cafe but a great addition to the local area.

The servers were friendly and checked in often, and the place itself was actually fairly big (had 2 floors and we sat in a corner on the second floor), but it had a quant feel. The cost per person was reasonable in my opinion at £16 per person for a mini pot of tea and selection of sandwiches and tea cakes. It was a rainy day: drizzling : that consistency of rain that makes you feel a bit run down. I was met with the most delicious, warming coffee: a very smooth latte, that had such a lovely taste that there was no need for a drop of sugar. They were out of most of their pastries by the time I sat in--due to their popularity, I have no doubt. I chose one of their remaining items: a small cake that had a touch of lemon and a raspberry on top of a creamy frosting. It was delicious--a welcomed treat when I felt in need of a pick me up. I did not have a chance to test their food so am unable to comment. Do note however: This is a VERY small place. Cozy to be sure, but small and by no means for larger groups. It is ideal for the soloist and duos to come in and have a fairly quick coffee, cake, and food (I assume). This is NOT a place to study. There are no comfortable lounge chairs, chairs or tables. The seating is composed of stools that reside at two bars. It's kind of reminding me of Italian style cafes where you drink your espresso at the bar, across from the barista who just served it to you (though in Rome, they don't offer you stools even!). Given the level of their coffee and cake, I'll be back again soon.

Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.
