Entering Starday is like entering a trip through time - vintage classics, highly curated and exceptionally displayed. There are many vintage shops on Fourth Street, which makes me so grateful and happy. In the 1980s, we would need to drive up to Melrose Avenue in Hollywood to get this kind of quality vintage apparel and curios. Of course it was an adventure to get all the way up there into deep LA, find parking and browse through the goodness of vintage clothing - the styles, the colors, the textures, the worn in qualities which no current items can produce. Now we have the same opportunity in good old Long Beach. Starday Vintage Too serves as a sweet option for those curious about vintage, about old-fashioned style, and how to reinvent it today. Yesterday I cruised in to the shop, drawn in by the window display, which is ever changing, and always super -stylish. Their usage of mannequins is both haunting and delightful. It feels as though full stories are being lived out through their mannequins and the way they have styled them. The window display says so much about how the female owner (red haired and creative, Nicole) runs her shop: dynamic, thoughtful, retro-centric, and committed to the process of artistically offering vintage goods, highly curated, at fair prices. I just love to see their latest window designs, cruise around inside, chat with the friendly staff, and check out everything from studded belts to zipper boots, wigs to leopard print overcoats... just so amazing. To me, this shop sets the pace for the rest of retro row. It's the corner of 4th and Cherry, high traffic, highly visible and fantastic. Buying the goods isn't the point. I'm on vacation here from out of state and made a note to stop by this place because it looked really cool. I rode my bike with my service animal and I put my mask on went to walk in and the guy behind the counter abruptly says "yeah sorry you can't come in because my dog is here." Not sure if this is the owner or just an employee, I told him ok no problem I would be sure to leave a nasty review online. As I rode my bike back by he tells me to "eat sh*t." So I kindly returned the favor by telling him to go f*** himself because really who treats a potential customer that way and I'm from the east coast we don't play that. Hopefully next time he talks like that to someone it's a man his size not a 5ft female and he gets knocked the hell out. read more

I was not impressed. There was a variety of "vintage" clothing, but it was so old and the presentation was seriously lacking. The guy at the counter just sits and plays on his phone. Doesn't greet customers and did not exhibit interest in customers or a personality. Quite sad. I'm sure they pay a lot of overhead just for the location. I've been coming to Swellegant for several years now (we vacation in Newport every couple of years) and I ADORE this shop! The selection is extensive and IMO, is the epitome of a true vintage shop! So many great finds at varying price points, but overall well worth what you pay. For those who've said their prices are high, keep in mind these are vintage pieces that have been curated by an expert eye--if you expect thrift store prices, just go to a thrift shop and do the work yourself ;). This year I SO scored with a pair of 80's Krizia polka dot pants (OMG!), a precious oversized metal bow ring, a totally rare wide-panel seersucker pastel dress and even a 60's silk shantung dress from the clearance rack that I plan on deconstructing to use to make a pattern! I had the day off work and I have a reuinion event in 2 days for something I did back in the late 80s/early 90s, so I decided to let go of mom-hood for a couple of hours and treat myself! Yay! The store has a great selection and is beautifully curated but the person working there kind of ruined it (for me, anyways). Maybe if I was a big movie star or a super hot guy or something he'd have helped me put together a fun fit for Sunday? ‍ Who knows. After a couple of friendly attempts to spark his desire to help, I just enjoyed my merry little time by myself, and every once in awhile marveled at how, for nearly two hours, this guy found zero interest in his (sole) customer, the store, and I dunno, making someone smile? this store has really beautiful items for a very reasonable price! i also got a couple christian dior and burberry vintage items for just over $30. the young man there was super patient with my toddler daughter, who was playing dress up while i was shopping and he was also very helpful when i had questions. i'm pretty sure we were in there for about an hour. i will be back in a month to see if they have new items. new fav store :) read more

I L-O-V-E this place.......Nicole (the owner) is great! She always has great vintage pieces. I was once in need of a coat and phoned her up told her what I was looking for. She found a couple pieces pulled them and saved them for me. She knows vintage and has an amazing selection of vintage cocktail rings and some not so vintage. She also has a nice selection of Bakelite and Lucite and Celluloid pieces. The shoes go on for days here. She carries clothing from the art deco era to mid century to 80's.... Yes, yes,yes. Tucked away far down the interminable Newport Blvd (how soon we forget) lies a rough diamond. This is real vintage. They actually had lots of intact 1940 and 1950s items. I scored a pristine red cashmere sweater with black lace and bead overlay that looks like last years Dolce and Gabbana. Cost me $50. Don't skip the sales rack! I found a 1980s white silk DKNY tunic with surplice wrapping and an old Japanese silk kimono with rotted out shoulders but a fantastic lining to make a scarf. Those were $4 each. Send the family down to ride bicycles along the coast while you get your fix. read more

Let me first say that I didn't buy anything. Mainly because although I found a lot of their selection to be great I was not ready to pay THAT much. I'm not sure if it's because "vintage" is in demand so prices are a bit high or if these clothes REALLY go for that much...maybe for the suits it would be understandable but some of the buttoned shirts were a bit more than I expected. I will say though everything I saw was in outstanding condition. I found some good double-breasted blazers but I'm not ready to pay roughly $90 for something old and possibly used when I can get a brand new one for about the same price. If living in the area or visiting, Swellegant Vintage is a staple thrift store to check out. It is right on the side of PCH when you are getting into Newport Beach. It is fun to walk around the area and pop in the stores that are in this neighborhood. Some of the stuff there is more costume-ish or different kinds of things, but you will find all sorts of purposeful items in here. It is different than your regular thrift store because it is more like a vintage store and has consignment and some of the items cost more than some people would like but they also are authentic vintage that is worth what you are paying for it. Swellegant Vintage has been around or a long time in this same area. It is one of the stores that makes this area recognizable. So I was driving by Swellegant with my boyfriend in the car. We were coming down for the 4th, as I have moved to San Francisco but as a born and breed Newport Beach girl I always come home for the 4th. As we drove onto the Peninnsula he made a comment about "Swellegant being a funny name". Of course I was quick to jump to the defense of Swellegant. Although it has been years since I have been in, I hold Swellegant in high regard and have nothing but fond memories of shopping here. Newport does lack vintage shops. So this is a gem for that reason alone. But tru to Newport standards is very expensive. Not arm and a leg expensive but not Aardvarks cheap by any means. But they stuff you fid here is not only much better quality than you would find in more popular urban vintage shops but at least in my opinion a rarer find. The staff i all friendly and helpful. Take a minute and look around here. It's a side of Newport you should treat yourself to seeing. read more

It was easy finding things in my size here, the pricing was not horrible... and i actually noticed plenty of 70 items like op corduroy shorts and suede vests. We were driving down to the beach when I saw the outside the store which immediately caught my attention. I convinced my friend to stop and take a look. So we walk in, and the store is filled with unique vintage pieces. The store owner was friendly, and when I asked to try some stuff on, she's just like "yeah, go right ahead!" this is the first time an employee hasn't treated me like a potential thief or something by counting the clothing and limiting my merchandise and all that stuff. it was a nice change. we ended up buying two oversized christmas sweaters for $24 each and a sixties hippie shirt for $12, which was reasonable. Two weeks later, I find myself coming back. At home I did some vintage dating ad found out it was an early 70's shirt. Great store!! read more

All of a sudden vintage was a thing in OC after stores like Deelux and Buffalo opened up, when great places like Swellegant have been here for years, with gem after gem of the real thing in a fun setting. The owner of this store takes a lot of care with her pieces, which are so well organized it's sends a little thrill down your spine when you walk in. The store is jam packed with authentic vintage clothing and all in really great condition... clothes at least. The shoes and bags not so much. Some of the small accessories were new but that is typical w thrift stores. Although their selection is legit and in such good condition I still found the prices to be quite high. $32 for men's swim trunks. We can buy new ones at that price. Also it was VERY hot in there... open up some windows or get some AC for the poor girl working inside!! read more

Cool, unique, high quality vintage clothing and accessories. I never leave without something in my hands when I stop by here, and I usually leave with more than I expected to. I think the best part is the owner always knows approximately what era a piece is from, which lends so much more authenticity to the experience. My collection from Swellegant includes some 40's low top cowboy boots, 70's bell bottoms, brown vintage suede sport coat, some crazy 60's shirt with bicycles on it, some 80's pink neon swim trunks, a hand painted leather 60's purse (gift for Mom?), and the list goes on. My friend and I drove up to Swellegant last week under the impression that the store opened at 12. We parked in front at 12:15 and it was closed. The sign on the door said "12-ish" which, according to the sign in tiny print is "11:59am-12:59pm." How is a minute before 1, 12ish!? Anyway we walked around for an hour and it was well passed 1 and the store still wasn't open. In that time, 3 others walked by and away when they saw the closed sign. You lost 5 customers Swellegant and it just seems like bad business if you can't even get the store open before 1. The stuff in the window looked cute, too. read more
