I shopped here while I was in town and found a cute short sleeve button down shirt that was hanging in the first rack as soon as I walked in! Definitely, an eye catcher. This has gotta be one of the cleanest, brightest thrift store I've ever been to. The energy was so positive in there and I love that the gals who work here are super friendly and helpful. They do have specials and look for the colored tags which indicates the discounts. A couple of older women were exciting with joy when they seen what I was purchasing and honestly, I don't get that type of commotion as much anymore and it felt so organic and fun. Spacious, nicely organized, helpful staff. I found myself wishing there were a few chairs people could sit on to rest and wait for the other shoppers in the group (they do have chairs for staff which I'm glad of). I know they are raising money for a charitable cause, but it is also nice that thrift stores provide the community an affordable place to buy items. I almost purchased a quilt for $30 and luckily I opened it up because there was a big sun faded spot on it. If you're going to buy something pricey, open it up and check! I want to say this thrift shop is the best one I've seen in a while for no reason. But there is a reason--they care. Coming from a life spent in thrift stores, I've seen the rise of second-hand shops where profit rules all. Things are excessively priced in order to maintain whatever goal the business would like to do--open up more branches, rake in more profits, make life more expensive for the consumers, and more. When I went into Assistance League Thrift Shop, this was not the case. First and foremost, pricing: it is reasonable almost to a fault. Things here remind me of the prices of things in thrift stores before it went through the big boom post-Macklemore 'Thrift Shop' and post-Depop era. Things are affordable. Which is insane to say is a big plus for a second-hand store (shouldn't that be the point?). Clothing wasn't priced high just cause it was a brand that was recognizable. Furniture wasn't priced out of anyone's reasonable second-hand budget despite being in good, working shape. Photo frames were the price of used photo frames. Electronics are tested by the team and not on a basis of 'AS-IS, NO REFUNDS.' The staff are friendly and will comment on what you have in your hands, they'll get you a basket, they'll ask you at the register what new things brought in should be priced at (which is great that they care about what customers think). My God. I live inland and without a doubt I would relish spending an hour in my car to make sure I have time to go here when I am in Long Beach. Even as I type this now, I am thinking of the cheap furniture I did not account on contemplating, waiting for me to probably purchase in the near future because I know it will not break the bank at the thrift store that did not break my heart. read more

This one does have a good selections of item and was pretty busy and lots of people wandering around and browsing the racks. If I could give 10 stars to the Assistance League of Long Beach Thrift and Vintage Store I wouldn't hesitate! The store is located in the arts district on 4th st. between Cherry and Junipero, and in my opinion, is one of the most organized, cleanest, and well merchandised thrift stores I've walked into. The quality of the clothes are good... I've even found designer brands like Chanel and Oscar de la renta. The staff is friendly, especially Darlene and Tammy. Probably the fanciest location I've been to of the AL thrift stores. It's on Retro Row, so parking can be an issue, and is paid parking if you don't have a handicap placard. Sobe prepared to walk a couple blocks if necessary, especially on Saturdays. The focus here is on nicer jewelry, clothing, vintage housewares, etc. You can find some really low prices with sales, but ticket prices on some items can be higher if they are designer. I have good luck here with nicer jewelry, and have found some great pieces over the years. Also found some vintage housewares, but my last trip was only some nice sterling jewelry. So you never know what you're going to find. Staff is always super friendly & helpful. Check their IG for special closing dates for things like their seasonal redos of the store, especially for the holidays. This can mean they may be closed for a few days on a normally open time of the week. You can always call ahead of time to check, if you're coming from quite a ways. read more

High end thrift shop (supported by the non-profit Assistance League of Long Beach) with designer fashions, in the heart of 4th street in LBC. Prices are really good (wife picked up a 'newer' pair of Paige jeans for under $10)...they have a small book section and I picked up a couple of Michael Connelly mysteries in hardcover for $3 each (they looked brand new). It is very well staffed, and the organization inside the store was striking: not overcrowded or painfully bare, just right...and things seemed to be in the right spots and in place...somebody planned this out and it's obvious people are constantly picking up after browsers. I don't know why I have not shopped here more often. This is probably the cleanest thrift store I've personally ever been in, right down to the fact that it doesn't even "smell" like a thrift store. They do not accept clothes that smell, and they may wash garments before putting them on the rack. Sure enough, all of my new-to-me blouses smell like they've been laundered. And, of course, great prices for lightly used clothing--much of it name-brand. Also, the staff is the BEST! Super friendly, and they will ask you if you need any help. Indeed, all the staff were engaged in conversations with customers and they all looked happy to be there. When I happened to mention to one of them that I was shopping for clothes for a new job, she was curious enough to ask me where, and we had a nice chat. And I've been to the one in Santa Monica, designer labels & all, it was a tad bit cheaper than this one. But if its you niche, I highly recommending supporting it. Parking is challenging as there is none. You can try to find free from far, but you'll have to pay and all the close up metered were taken. This is the Good The Bad, and the Ugly: THE GOOD: still the best prices and treasure hunting on this street. Now with improved decor, shelves etc. They did a revamp and looks great. Most of the staff is wonderful people. THE BAD: the fitting room is now much smaller and a pain in the ass. I am 5ft9 and had to stand sideways to change, could not turn around enough to put clothes on. Also, they close it with, I swear, 10+ clothes pins, so help me God, took a lot to put those on & off every time I went in or out to try anything, made the fitting room experience laborious & defeating. They said they are working on this. I say yes, if you are planning on selling clothes, esp w paid parking when you are by the minute. The UGLY: Don't trust them, and watch out for that manager! Make sure they give you all the stuff you paid for before you leave, and keep the receipt just in case!! I bought a lot of stuff, and they did not give me all I bought. (I had several bags & bulky items, and they brought what I couldn't carry out to the curve to me, to expedite, since they were closing). I did not realize they had not given me the lamp I paid for until the eve, I went back the next morning, and even though I had given it to manager the eve before, as she was ringing me up, and she was there the next morning, they refused to give it to me. I had not kept my receipt (I didn't know I could not trust them!!!), and while she said it would be itemized on the receipt, she said nothing about looking the less than 12hr-old receipt up for me, to check. I wasn't gonna make a scene for $10, also, I was late to an appointment, so I paid for it again, since it was a gift, and perfect for a friend of mine. I work in retail also, that is just horrible customer service. I am not upset about the extra ten bucks, only the vile intent! This was the manager, the other ladies were trying to put sense into her, so one person here is anti-customer, only. Unfortunately, currently managing! Ridiculous, isn't it!! read more

A great thrift shop in the middle of retro row on 4th in long beach. This is a huge store, light, bright and well laid out with row after row of gently worn name brands. This thrift store carries a wide range of clothing, shoes, household items, small appliances, books (first editions and signed copies in the locked case in the corner), toys and collectibles. I found vintage fiesta ware, fire king and color king federal glass here, as well as some other great pieces. The store is large and it does require some digging and looking to find some awesome deals but they are there. Some of their "heritage" clothing (in a separate area) is on the high side of resale - $18 for a used banana republic shirt is a bit much. But, if it's what you want then it is what it is. The Assistance League is a non-profit organization that transforms the lives of children through community programs. When a chapter is being founded it does a community needs assessment and develops programs to meet the needs they uncover. The Long Beach chapter is the largest chapter of AL and through its donations it funds 11 programs. Among the most notable is their contribution through the national organization's Operation School Bell Initiative that provides uniforms to every child of families needing financial assistance and the Orthodontic Program, which helps provide some financial support for kids needing braces. One of the ways that the Assistance League generates income for their programs are their thrift and consignment shops. Unlike other charitable organizations (notably the faith-based ones) that have thrift shop storefronts, I feel comfortable supporting this organization because 1) their primary mission is to help children and families and in particular 2) there is no religious component in the organization's mission statement. But also on top of this, the AL shops are notable in the sense that they have higher-quality clothes and accessories in its shops. In the AL shops I've visited each one has a section in their store labeled "boutique" or "vintage". Now this is where all the good stuff is at! The jewelry, especially in this location, is noted to be very inspiring. Apparently I'm not the only one that thinks this as the store has been awarded last year's "Best Thrift Store, Gift/Boutique Store, Antiques/Collectibles Store" in various local reader polls. It also helps that the store itself is very organized and the staff are very friendly and proactively helpful. Although I have embraced thrifting 1-2 years ago to the point that at least half my clothes are thrift store finds, a lot of unorganized racks from many a store have discouraged me to find stuff on my own (usually I have someone else go with me). On my second visit here I was able to finally browse the racks and find clothes for myself! On both visits I have spent $50+ on assorted clothing and jewelry and for a lot of pieces I have been complimented by multiple people. It feels really great. The secret? Their newly-remodeled fitting room, which looks even better than most retail stores! The only con here is parking but this is true of almost every single business in this part of Long Beach so this is just a nitpick at this point. read more

If you're a thrifter, take a look at this shop! The shop is run by volunteers and all the proceeds go to local Long Beach charities. This includes the Miller's Children Hospital, CSULB, and LBCC. So you know what you're buying is going back into the community. Like any other thrift shop, you have to look around a bit to find items that fit you or are to your liking. I found a bikini top, a shirt, and two running shorts. The bikini top was 50% off that day depending on the color of the tag for only $4. The rest of my items were regular clothing price which is usually $4. What a steal! You really can't get a better deal than that!
