This place serves really good food and really friendly staff besides. I highly recommend it if you're in Vale.

We stopped in Vale overnight in the RV park. We had an early dinner here and both of us ordered burgers and beers. We are in the dining room where the bar is. They had draft beer so both my husband and I went up to the bar to see their selections. While standing there we noticed a hand written sign sitting on the bar that said " draft beer and wine $3.00". We both ordered 2 drafts beer while there. When the waitress brought our check it said we were charged $5.50 for each beer. I mentioned it to her and she responded "oh, that sign was for an event a few days ago." The service was minimal and there was only one other person there when we got there. Our burgers were warm, not hot. We wouldn't recommend this as a spot to get a warm welcome, hot food, great service, or above average customer service. read more

Tried this place for lunch and two days later for dinner. Both times the service was good and very polite. Lunch was a French dip that was average and I wouldn't order again. Dinner was the only steak on the menu, a thin ribeye that was cooked very well but had a large chunk of butter on top that made it taste a bit greasy. I ordered it with mashed potatoes, which were pretty standard, because I get tired of fried side offerings and chicken noodle soup which was penne in chicken broth. Tasty but nothing to write home about. The only really disappointing item with a very average meal was the hot tea. No black tea except decaf Irish breakfast and a lot of lemon and ginger or a few other herbal teas. read more

What a disappointment. Their "famous Reuben melt" sandwich, made with house-made corned beef, was terrible. The meat was cut thick and was extremely tough and chewy. At one point I had to open up the sandwich to see if there was even any sauerkraut inside. There was, but not enough to even taste it. The bread, a marbled rye, was very good. Just everything else was bad. The fries had zero color to them and were so underdone it was ridiculous. Even their pie left a lot to be desired. The filling was just OK, but look at that underdone crust. The only good thing I can say about this place is that my waitress was cheery and attentive. Good job there. read more

I ordered a waffle and they gave me a pancake because their machine was screwed up. That was alright I guess but to make it worse they charged me for a waffle which was more expensive and the pancake wasn't even that good. Would prefer to stop somewhere else. The food is adequately good. Service is good. The wait however is very long. From sitting down till we got our food was over 40 mins. It also appeared our food sat in the window for a bit. I had expected hash-browns or taters and was sadly disappointed with roasted potatoes with no warning they were substituting. It just took way too long overall If you're taking a break for breakfast or lunch is too long. Some time management needed here. I have to applaud them for improving food available in Vale, keeping it clean, and happy waitresses. read more

Starlite used to be a restaurant to brag about. Their food was excellent and well and properly prepared. Portions were generous, and usually enough for a second meal. But the food has gone downhill fairly quickly. Ordered ham and cheese omelettes with tomatoes, charged full price and they left off the Tomatoes. Today we ordered the same, omelettes with ham cheese and tomatoes, we order to go, I don't leave the house. We got it home and opened up the containers to burned toast. Gave that to the pups. Then I cut into my omelette, and all the requested ingredients were there, inside a raw egg. The outside was done, the inside was raw. Microwaved the omelette, in hopes that it would cook the inside. It was partly successful. Also omelettes were considerably smaller than the ones we used to get. Seriously disappointed. Won't be going back. read more

Roadside diner which is "seemingly" in the middle of nowhere...... One of the best burgers I've ever had (rodeo burger)..... Served promptly with a smile and cooked perfectly. What a "find" the Starlite Cafe is ...... You won't be sorry you stopped in. Parking lot filled with locals eating at this terrific restaurant. Great product, fair prices, nice prompt and pleasant service.... In a bit of a "tired" diner setting perhaps, but don't let that stop you. read more

What a great roadside cafe! I loved this place. I'm sure most of the city comes here as it looks like a regular spot for the locals to hand out and get some good food. If you order anything with gravy it is always cold. We had 3 plates with cold gravy. We later found out the cooks didn't even warm them.

This place is worth the drive. At our table, we had two perfectly done cheeseburgers with all of the fixings, and one ham and cheese melt. All of us substituted a salad bar for the fries. The salad bar was amazingly fresh, and had a good variety of toppings. The burger, on my burger scale of 1-10, earns a 9. This burger is cooked properly and no crazy stuff added to it. On the down side, the ham and cheese melt was a bit salty. Go for the burger, you'll be happy. read more

This is the perfect little road trip breakfast spot! Very cozy, country atmosphere. The bacon and eggs were exceptional!! So was the French toast! Service was very friendly and the restaurant very clean Felt like I was eating breakfast at my grandma's house- nothing fancy or over the top- just REAL good!! [Rating based on pie and early afternoon service] A friend recommended this as a meeting place as we passed through eastern Oregon. We walked in, and were told to sit where we'd like. We bypassed the primary room with its booths and counter, and went to the back room where we took a deeper booth. The waitress quickly brought us menus and took our drink orders. We had already had lunch, so that didn't sound good, but someone suggested pie. "What pies do you have?" I asked. "I don't know, I just got here a little while ago, I'll go make a list." She replied. "How do you not know the four to six pies that most diners have?" I wondered after she left for a couple of minutes. She returned and proceeded to rattle off around 20 types of pie! It was awe inspiring! Our table had the Oreo Cream, Caramel apple, strawberry and strawberry-rhubarb. The pieces were probably each 1/6th of a pie, they were very good and we cleaned our plates. Very good cafe food. Some of the best finger steaks I have ever had. Generous portions. My wife had chicken strips, and there was plenty to come home. The fries were well done and tasty. A trip to the salad bar is part of the dinner order, and I have to admit, it was a very decent salad bar. It looks like they are well-known for their pies and had a huge selection. My wife and I had the almond joy pie. It was good. If you are going through Vale, you should stop by. If you really like Finger Steaks, I'd recommend going, even from Ontario. The dinners we saw were all in the $10-12 range. They had Prime Rib (Saturday night) for $19. read more

Local food at it's best. Clean, excellent service, generous portions. Nothing fancy but most items are fresh and homemade. I had the BLT and it was loaded with 'real' bacon (not those thin, greasy slices where you taste more oil than bacon), just the right amount of mayonnaise (which means not too much), fresh lettuce, and good tomatoes on excellent toast.
