We were given our playbill and salad immediately as we were seated. I was in the front row next to the yellow brick road, and I loved it! They traded my salad for a soup because I had also ordered a salad for dinner. I didn't think about it, they did, so thoughtful. I loved our seat mates, delightful couple. The show was outstanding. The actors were cast perfectly, and the singing and dancing made the show! I loved the lion, the tin man and wicked witch. They were always my favorites and even more so now. This is my second visit to the theater and even though we have to travel from Arizona I will definitely make more shows in the future. Highly recommend! read more

The ticket purchase process was a little confusing on the website. I was told I had to call in to let them know what I wanted for dinner and was then told no they didn't offer dinner anymore, and then again told they did. I also purchased the insurance just in case something happened, waste of money. Something did happen and we were not able to go. I called in to ask what the process was and was told that I probably needed to go to the website, when I asked which website, the theater or the insurance company her response was yeah I think the other website. I filed a claim and it was denied. So not only did we lose out on the insurcance money but we didn't get any refund from the tickets and the person answering the phone wasn't much help. Took a long time for me to make my first visit to Stars but I finally did last week. Went with my wife and in-laws to see Beauty and the Beast and it was a real treat. We all did dinner and the pork was actually really good. It was nicely cooked and came with a good sauce. Plenty of food on the plate to fill me up. The play itself was fantastic, they really put on a great production, I'd go see another one any time. read more

Splendid, scrumptious even. Me, my mom, and my best friend ordered the Turkey dinner while my dad ordered prime rib. This food really got me excited for the show Holiday Inn. The overall vibe and ambience is so comforting and festive. The workers are wearing cute little Christmas themed headbands and necklaces like Christmas lights and reindeer antlers, it's adorable. The waiters consistently check in at the right times. The food was very very filling and yummy. There was a beautifully cooked Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing??!!!!, and broccoli. This place is outstanding. Well worth the drive from Mesa, AZ to Bakersfield, CA. We visited once several years ago for a show featuring magicians Tim Mannix and Terry Godfrey along with hypnotist/magician Gus Flamingo. Not a bad seat in the house. Terrific evening. On our most recent visit, we were in town to see some friends in the play The Wizard of Oz. One played the Cowardly Lion and one the Wicked Witch. Both were great as was young Dorothy and the entire cast, crew, and our servers. Each table was decked out nicely with our playbill already at our seats - we sat in the front row, on the other side of the yellow brick road, and actually felt like we were IN the play at times. Dinner was amazing. My wife had soup and then a Chicken BLT salad and I had salad and then Chicken Parmesan. The serving sizes were amazing and they do offer take-home boxes for leftovers. Dessert was free with a Yelp check-in, so that was a nice bonus. I had an Oreo cheesecake and my wife had an ice cream sundae. The play was mesmerizing. Live performances are always fantastic because no two shows are ever the same. We're going to remember this night for many years and look forward to our next road trip to Bakersfield for dinner and a play - or other entertainment - at Stars. read more

It's a shame to admit that I've never been to Stars Theater until my daughter got a part as one of the orphans for the play "Annie". Now, I know this building too well and at the same time, I have learned to respect the local theater community. The talent that we have in this town has been understated. I'm thankful for the local theaters like Stars for promoting theatrical arts. I saw how it affected my daughter in a good way and I hope that this theater stays open. We're local but it was our first time here. We saw Jersey Boys which is our favorite production (this was the 5th time but first time locally) and it was done really well. It's definitely a sometimes thing because it is a bit pricey $80 for dinner and a show or $50 for just the show. My husband had shrimp pasta and I had a vegetarian pasta and both were good. Dinner comes with tea,coffee or water but you can buy alcohol or soda and dessert is an extra charge. We will definitely be back for another occasion. Also the tables mostly seat 4 so we shared with 2 strangers,they were really nice and we made pleasant conversation during all the downtime but I could see it being awkward of your table mates are rude or unfriendly. Definitely give this place a chance if you are a theatre fan. My only complaint is the chairs aren't the most comfy and you're sitting for a few hours so next time I would maybe bring a cushion for myself my husband was fine. read more

My friends and I went to see Kinky Boots recently and the show was great. However the dinner they served was not great. I had ordered the beef dinner that looked more like a frozen Jenny Craig dinner. My salad looked thrown on a plate with hardly any dressing. The meat portion was about three inches by three inches of soggy saturated beef with a bbq sauce. I ordered two dirty martinis and one had cherry flavored vodka in it, that's $30 bucks for the two. The food and drinks were subpar for what they are charging. Maybe that's why a majority of the patrons came in just for the show. Excellent show horrible food and drinks. read more

Dec 2018. Hoffmann Hospice had a Christmas party for the volunteers at Stars Theatre and restaurant. It was my first time having dinner and watching a show there. The play was a Christmas Carol. I thought the play was nicely done. No complaints with that. Dinner was prime rib it was small but good, salad and bread. I can't remember what side was served with prime rib. We were served cake for dessert and I always love me some cake. I thought Hoffman picked a great place to have a Christmas party. Food and wait staff was good. I didn't give 5 stars because the seats are so uncomfortable. We ended up leaving after dessert because we were uncomfortable. I think they need to invest in better seating. read more

My heart leaps whenever I have the opportunity to go to the Stars Theatre. The service is incredible! Most times the food is perfect but I'm not crazy about any chicken with the bone in. There is over $1 million worth of talent on that stage. When I hear the live orchestra I feel like I'm at the Bakersfield symphony. I absolutely love this theatre. My daughter has a part in the show Annie Get Your Gun. So, we have spent A LOT of time at this establishment for practices and although I have never been to a show before the backstage vibes have captured my heart and I will forever be a supporter of this local theatre. Most people only see what goes on in the forefront but not the back. A lot of time and effort goes into bringing locals broadway plays. We have always been greeted with hospitality and kindness during rehearsals. From the owner to the director to the costume ladies and sound techs. Such a great group of individuals who bring broadway to life and give artists opportunities young and old. The director Cathy is wonderful! And so knowledgeable. My husband and I will be there this Friday to watch all of their hard work come together. read more

Pretty cool experience. You get a pretty tasty meal and a good show with talented actors. It is a little expensive when all said and done but it's a different experience than you can't get anywhere else in Bakersfield. It's not as crazy as the melodrama(which is great too) and has better quality too. it's kind of a higher class melodrama. The service is great and they are very organized. You get your dinner before the show and dessert at intermission. I had the tri tip although the baked cod looked yummy. It was pretty good and had a interesting sauce on top and the sides were done well. The play was "Death trap". It was good, maybe a little slow in parts and some what predictable but I stayed interested. The actors for the most part were very talented, some over acting here and there but still very good. I would suggest going for a different more adult night out. It's another reason you should never say "there is nothing to do in Bakersfield". read more

We attended Stars showing of Pippin opening night. Our grandson Allen played the part of Pippin and what a wonderful job he did. We were so proud to see him on stage in a leading role. The entire cast did a wonderful job. Supporting local theater is very important. The only reason we do not attend more often is because it is so difficult for me to sit for hours in the hard seats they provide. With better seating we would definitely be season subscribers. read more

What a remarkable dinner theater. This place not only puts on great shows, but serves quality meals, too. Whether you are dining in the cafe or watching a show at night, you will have a great meal here. I actually wish I worked downtown so that I could eat here more often. Alas, I like my current job, so that won't be happening any time soon. Last night, I had a perfectly cooked pork chop and sampled my wife's salmon. It was both flaky and not dried out. I hope this isn't a typical night for this theater. We sat three at a table for eight then another family of eight sat at our table. We were very crowded. The event with a meal was overpriced the dessert was melted. If I do go back I won't order food. The venue was so hot we had to go outside to cool off. We left at intermission. read more

Dinner and show? Who can resist that! When my dear old Dad turned 80 I was struggling with a good gift idea. "Stuff" just accumulates when you reach a certain age and honestly, who wants to give the guy that wiped your bum as a child a gift card? I'm all about experiences as gifts - vacations, concerts, shows; so I thought Stars Dinner Theatre would be the best of both world, especially since my Dad held a minor in theater and was known to play a few roles here and there on the local stage. I purchased my tickets online. The website was easy and thorough. I definitely appreciated the map to choose our seats and table. Once I got to check-out I nearly had a heart attack. This birthday gift certainly wasn't cheap. Then again, how often are you able to partake in an 80th Birthday celebration. "Totally worth it," I unconvincingly muttered to myself as I punched in my credit card number. Whoa that total. I'd like to not think about it until my credit card statement arrives. When the show date arrived we picked up Dad and headed downtown. Parking sucked, as most downtown parking does. Valet certainly would be nice here, especially when the weather is this chilly! Inside we were greeted with out dinner tickets and headed on into the theater. To the left of the theater was the Cafe where several people gathers sipping beer and wine. Note, this is also the location of the only bathrooms so you'll eventually be making your way here at some point in the night. We were led down to our table, past several local artists pieces for sale on the wall. I fell in love with a cow portrait (crossing my fingers Santa brings me this!). The first part of the evening proceeded without a hitch. If possible, I'm going to look into bringing my own wine next time. As always, bottles are marked up quite a bit and there wasn't any particularly good ones on the menu. The food was better than anticipated. We had pre-ordered two Turkey and two Prime Rib dinners. It wasn't anything astonishingly good, but it was edible. Very typical Sysco serviced items. I was a little surprised that desert wasn't included with the meal, instead we were asked to order before the show began so it could be available during the intermission. Because it was a special day I opted in for everyone at the table. The red velvet cake was pretty good and it was a fairly large slice, so I felt my 4.50 was well spent on dessert. In the end I spent well over $300 for 4 people to enjoy an evening. When you add it all up, dinner, dessert, drinks and a show the price per person wasn't too terribly bad. Plus it supports our local theater and when it comes to local, I'm always willing to spend a little bit more. Definitely consider Stars Theatre for something different. They have a great variety of shows coming up including Mary Poppins! Maybe I'll see you there! read more

My colleague and I were in Bakersfield for work. On these trips I always like to go out and experience the local color and I came across Stars. They were doing Camelot so we decided to check it out. You can buy tickets for the show only for $45 or for dinner and the show for $70. We opted for dinner. The meal was good, nothing fancy but tasty. The show was really good, impressive production value. Dinner theater is a dying breed and this was pretty top notch. The lead actress had a beautiful singing voice and it was fun to watch. I am going to do my best to write this review strictly about the venue and the food, as the musical was S***. If you have been to AMAZING performances in a large, metropolitan, highly-cultured cities (e.g. LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas, etc.), just don't bother with Bakersfield theatre (unless it's the Melodrama or The Empty Space). If you're not going to heed my warning, heed this: go in with the lowest of expectations and you'll come out feeling okay. I came to the Stars Theatre with my colleagues and our better halves for our annual team dinner/outing. We grabbed drinks beforehand at the adjacent bar. The bartenders were very friendly and their drink selection as decent (beers, house wines, cocktails). The theatre does a pretty good job of placing the tables so that everyone can face the stage. However, since our party was at a rectangular table with the short edge towards the stage, everyone except the "head" of the table had to turn their chairs 90 degrees. No big deal. The dinner was all right. I remember that it was chicken, but I don't remember any particulars. I guess that meant that it was good! Hey, at least I don't remember it being bad! One thing Stars does have going for it is the service. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, and the chef even came out during intermission to ask us how our meal went! That was very nice! Would I recommend Stars Theatre? I'm on the fence. It was simply one of those cases where the show was so bad it was funny. It made a great date night in the sense that my boyfriend and I could roll our eyes and laugh about the show all the way home. read more

I spent two days in Bakersfield this weekend and was searching for something to do with my boyfriend, other than the usual movie or dinner. I came across this dinner theater on an internet search and it looked promising. I booked our tickets - $60 each for dinner and a show - as they were doing the musical of SUNSET BLVD. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance. Tables were nicely set with candles, on three different levels, all having pretty good views of the stage. We had to share our table with another couple, who were very chatty and anxious to let us know their son had a good part in the musical. The meal arrived, and we were starving. The portions were so small, that I had to stuff myself with bread to fill up. One very thin pork chop and a few veggies and potatoes, plus a small salad. My boyfriend had fish that he said tasted "old". Oh, well --- onto the show. My opinion with theater, like everything else, is that the director needs to step up to the plate and cast the show well, and then choreograph and direct it properly. Strive for excellence!! Of course this was a musical, but I absolutely HATE it when the lead characters sing all the dialog. It makes it very difficult to follow the plot and dis-engages the audience. Yes, it is a musical, but dialog can be spoken, and should be spoken, to make it more entertaining. From the very start, my heart sank. I could see that my boyfriend, not a theater buff, was bored because he could not understand what was going on. We were not alone. The applause was perfunctory and it appeared that our fellow audience members felt the same way. There were no standouts in this production, but what really made my stomach roil and my ears ache were Miss Erika Kern, who played Norma Desmond. Over-acting is one thing - but screeching lines and ruining beautiful songs is another. I have Elaine Paige's CD where she sings New Ways to Dream and The Perfect Year - and you would think they were completely different songs. This young woman spoiled the entire production for us, and we slipped out at intermission, foregoing our desserts, and making a hasty retreat to the nearest Coldstone for ice cream sundaes. We then went back to our hotel and watched the original movie, SUNSET BOULEVARD, on Netflix, so my boyfriend could get an idea of what the plot was supposed to be about. I have worked in theater, film and television since the early 1960's. My son starred in musical theater as a singer, dancer and actor. I know good theater. This was not even adequate. It was TERRIBLE. Awful costumes, choreography and singing. I won't say this is probably because it was in Bakersfield -- good theater can take place anywhere. The evening - from the meager portions of the meal to the show itself - was a huge disappointment and it is unlikely we will revisit the Stars Theater Restaurant. read more

The wife and I go here 4 - 6 times a year with friends. The shows are always entertaining, some better than others, too many of them are musicals for my taste, but I endure. The food is consistently good most nights, this night was a terrible exception. First the show was Nuncrackers, which had some hysterical moments intermixed with sleep time. The jokes were downright raunchy sometimes, and some of the singing was near ear covering. We left at intermission, maybe it picked up after that. The real disappointment was surprisingly, the food. Our group all had the Prime Rib, and I use the term only because it was what they called it. It was TERRIBLE!!!! Any chef that would serve that and call it Prime Rib, should be terminated, and probably jailed. It actually tasted OK, in the way that Pot Roast is OK, because that was how it was cooked. Every piece was absolutely well done, not a speck of pink on any piece, and it was covered in a gravy, not Au jus, a thickened gravy. I understand there are some people who have an irrational aversion to beef that is still pink in the middle, but you give them the ends, or immolate one whole one as a sacrafice. Statistically most people like med rare, so going well done is disappointing more people than med rare. At least they could go medium, which would still have a little pink/flavor left. We will continue going, mostly because the wife insists, but I won't be stupid enough to order prime rib again, unless the hire a new chef that knows what they are doing. read more

The show was great. It was very colorful and entertaining. Dinner was okay and met expectations for a dinner show. The beef in the beef burgundy was slightly tough but was flavorful with the gravy it was in. Vegetables and salad were good. Food was not hot and portions were "just enough" but not generous. For dessert, I had the apple strudel. Strudel was served partially frozen and not worthy. Service started out great but then diminished. We went here for the first time a couple weeks ago and loved it. We were looking for a fun activity for date night when I saw that "Little Shop of Horrors" was playing. The play was great. Actors were perfect for the quirky roles, and the singing was on point. We had a lot of fun. I guess the only downside is the stage is quite small, but they use the space wisely. It can also get pricey, but it's worth it to support local theater. We will definitely be back for another show soon. read more

A fun place to go, especially if you like local theater. We visit regularly when visiting family in Bakersfield. The theater productions are generally pretty good with some being better than others. We've been pleasantly surprised more often than not. The food is good. Not great, but definitely good. Service is pleasant. Chairs are fine for dinner, but get a bit uncomfortable after a couple hours. The audience skews toward an older demographic who in my opinion don't sufficiently appreciate the efforts and talents on stage. They often sit stone-faced after a performer has just finished an impressive song or dance routine. we have been patrons for severl years. they charged my husband twice on his debit card for the event. both of our stuffed pork chops were over-cooked and tough. we reported it to our server. we couldn't eat them, but our dogs loved their doggy bags. called trying to get a hold of upper management. showed so called manager mr. green my husbands checking account printout and he said it was our credit unions faulty. our credit union stated no. they charged us twice. mr green refused to acknowledge or call our bank. mr. filbrandt never returned our call either. no more stars theatre for us after over 10 years. stars theatre quality is deminishing. read more
