Stopped in for lunch yesterday to try this place. We were seated right away, ordered our drinks then placed our order. There were other patrons but far from crowded. We decided to try a few of their small plates and their "special burger". The deviled eggs with pancetta and fried leeks were delicious, followed by the pork and spinach dumplings that had great flavor but the pork was so lean it unfortunately was tough. Then 10....15....20 minutes finally passed, more people came in, noticed they were getting their food, but we were still waiting for one more small plate and a specialty $30 truffle burger and truffle fries that finally arrived that I ordered medium, but the waitress suggested medium rare) and IT CAME RAW! When she finally came back around and we let her know, she looked at it and her response was "oh sorry" then walked away! The small plate was spicy green beans which would've been delicious but it came cold. After all that...we ordered a brownie with vanilla ice cream and as I scooped a piece and lifted it up, out came a long piece of hair...WE WERE DONE! read more

My favorite local spot to grab a beer and a bite to eat. Everything on the menu is good, but I think my favorite might be their wedge salad for the rich dressing, generous serving of chicken, and tangy pickled onion. This time I got the tuna poke appetizer and a flight of beers. The poke has a bright flavor and is made with good quality fish. GO FOR THE BRUSEL SPROUTS! Aside from that, go for the fun times - lunch or dinner - and FABULOUS happy hour. I've been about a handful of times and I can't get enough of this place. The atmosphere is so much fun, and in case you're a sports fanatic (like me with tennis and MMA), they do have TVs. But who cares about watching TV when the scene is poppin'. Did I already say to go for the brussell sprouts? And COCKTAILS. They have a lovely herbaceous cocktail called the "beauty cocktail" or something like that. Whatever it is, it's delicious. And "healthy!" LOL. I also love ordering a Moscow Mule - they make a good one :) A few of my other faves are the Kale-fornia salad, the Buratta BLT (sans bacon for me), and the fries, which are cooked in rice oil - YAAAASSS. Great concept of a restaurant. You can tell its their own style. Some of their menu items are the typical "new" American style food, but I was pretty pleased. My bf and I stopped by this local gem after hiking for 5 hours. We came in time for happy hour. Overall, prices weren't too bad for drinks. We got the margherita pizza ($4 off) and the cubano sandwich (reg menu). They were spot on and food came out fast. I like the bite of the house made pickles they put on the cubano. The pizza had a flavorful tomato sauce. I usually prefer whole pieces of basil, as theirs were cut, but i think thats just a preference depending on how many times you've eaten margherita style pizzas. What surprised me the most was the ipa my bf got. I usually hate ipa bc of the hoppy aftertaste, but it had a smooth finish (Altered state ipa, i believe). For staff: they're quick, attentive, and keep your drinks comin'. Cant complain but we came on a friday at 3pm so, it could be better or worse for you depending on what time you come in. I was in the area and shopping at the art store next door when it became obvious I needed sustenance. I walked in early on a Saturday night and was seated in the delightful covered outdoor sidewalk area. Cheerful and funny servers were immediately helpful. My terrific draft was cool and perfect for the incredible fried chicken sandwich that I had already decided on after seeing it on another diner's table as I walked in. The menu was inventive with old favorites and some more exotic fare but I have to recommend the chicken sando. I will be back next time I am in the area. Really enjoyed my experience at State Room! Everyone (from the host and hostess to the bus boys) was so genuinely kind and gracious. My waitress, Sarah, was attentive, fun, and bubbly. She was efficient and great in all ways. I had the fried chicken (replaced the biscuit with extra cole slaw). Super aesthetically pleasing presentation. Generous portion of fried chicken (4 pieces). Chicken was nice and tender, not too bready, but a bit on the bland side. Close slaw was a hit, perfect amount of mayo and sugar. For dessert had the brownie mud cake (gluten free). Delicious! Just what I had been craving for. The cocoa nibs added a crunch to the soft texture of the chocolate ice cream and brownie, making it that much more enjoyable. Look forward to coming back! I have been here a few times at the bar for apps and beer and I'm hooked. The chicken wings ate absolutely the best ever. Also great, calamari and the sticky ribs are the bomb. The altered state beer won an California award and I know that this is a fabulous ale. Brought my wife today today and she also thought it was great. Dropped by for lunch with a group of 8 during work. You would think the larger party would lead to longer wait times but nope. Excellent service, we had a great server. We ordered calamari, poke, spare ribs to share. I ordered the Burger with white cheddar and bacon. The apps were great. I particularly loved the ribs. So delicious. Washed down with a good fizzy coke ( i hate flat soda ). And the burger was also great. The bacon was slightly over done, it was super crispy and slightly burnt, but the burger meat was great. Pretty pricey though for a 19$ burger. Which is why i am keeping this a 4 star. read more

This place has been getting a lot of buzz, 3 or 4 friends have mentioned it as a "good, new place". True! My first time in, had the crunchy chicken sandwich which was pretty darn good although could use a little less 'crunchy' and a little more 'chicken' it was quite tasty and filling enough for a lunch. Notable are the details; fried were piping hot, the sprite had a maraschino cherry floating in it and the staff we encountered (manager, waitress, busser) were all genuinely nice. Service was definitely not overbearing, totally adequate (and reasonable for the tail end of a lunch rush) The State Room is a good addition to San Rafael, we will be back and I'd encourage you to give it a try as well :) read more

Nothing special. However, I have no complaints. The burgers are pretty juicy and hefty. The breakfast sandwich was pretty good. Mac and cheese, calamari, and deviled eggs are ok. Give it a try! To be completely honest - part of the 4 stars comes from the fact that they did not have the double IPA last weekend. It was disappointing. Their food is good, but not completely spectacular. I ordered the "Eat Your Veggies" sammie and it was great. Good use of broccolini (just generally good vegetables). My boyfriend ordered the Presidential (he seemed to enjoy, and the biscuit was good). We watched football and it was a nice Sunday morning. I think my wrap could have had less of a runny sauce, which spread around my plate like an ocean of oil. This seemed as though it could have been curbed. Love this place! They also have a covered patio with heat lamps out front that makes for a safe Covid free dining experience. But last time we went for dinner in December we decided to dine indoors. Oh boy! We were seated in close proximity to the back room where a huge Skee-ball machine sits. Three kiddos were having a blast in there, while we as diners hardly could hear each other above the BOOM CRASH and woohoos from them as they were playing vigorously. I am glad we were not on our first date I saw the kids belonged to another couple sitting near by. And while I totally get that they wanted to have a nice uninterrupted dinner by shipping off the kids to entertain themselves - it came at the cost of ruining the dinner experience for the rest of us. We'll definitely be back (we're locals) but next time I am going to get a table as far away from that hellish machine as possible. Lastly I am wondering and somewhat puzzled as to why the Skee-ball is even there. State Room is a restaurant not a State Fair. read more

I can't believe I'm writing this review, as I loved State Room for so long...but here we go. The past three times I've been here have been extremely disappointing while super expensive. Waiters seem impatient and agitated to serve me, which is weird because frankly my husband and I are pretty damn generous and friendly. Tonight was the final straw. We were ordering from our waiter, I got a burger, and had initially requested it be cooked medium, with no mayonnaise/aioli on it. My husband then reminded me I also didn't want lettuce (pregnancy brain has made me forgetful while ordering), so right before the waiter stepped away, I said, "I'm so sorry, but can I actually have it with no lettuce and cooked medium well instead of medium?" The waiter interrupted me and said, "I got you" while looking deadpan and walked off. Okay, maybe he was going to remember that without writing it down, no worries. So the burger arrives and, on the plus side, it is medium well, but there is lettuce and mayo/aioli on the burger. I wait for the waiter to come back and then I let him know. He says, "Oh you said NO aioli", then grabs the burger and, as he's walking away, also says, "This is actually the State Room sauce"...like, he didn't stop to explain what that meant? Is there mayo in the State Room sauce or is it a totally different sauce? I wasn't being demanding, I even apologized for the inconvenience, so it's not like he was dealing with someone being combative. So the burger comes back, no lettuce, no mayo/aioli/State Room sauce. Okay cool. Then, he comes back to check on the table next to us, who are clearly friends of his. He acts super nice with them, "Hey guys! How is everything? Is the food all good? Good, so glad! Yadda yadda", then, as if we're in a sitcom, he half spins around and again gives us deadpan expression and says, "everything good?" and starts walking off while we're in the middle of saying "yes", which was especially funny because my husband wanted to order another drink. By this point, we're over it. We want to leave. The food has been difficult and isn't as great as it used to be, and our server very clearly doesn't want us there. Luckily, he never asks if we want anything else, just brings us the check, so I guess he was ready for us to leave too, haha. He drops the check at our table even though my husband was placing the card right on the check and it would have only taken maybe 3 seconds of him waiting for him to receive the credit card, walks right off. I gotta give props to the busser at this point. He saw this all happen and immediately takes the check for us. Then, a totally different waitress brings us back our card and bill. Which seemed weird. I mean, maybe there was a shift change? But with how rude our server had been the whole time it kinda felt like he just hated us and didn't want to see us again lol. All in all, I'm done with State Room, which super bums me out. It was our go to for YEARS since it opened. We had their t-shirts, we had their sticker, we told people how amazing it was...and now it's...this. I want to be clear though: the busser was awesome, the waitress who brought our check back seemed really friendly, the host/hostess were friendly, and I've known of a few other staff members there who are great...but this guy, wow. Like...maybe I killed his dog in a past life and he remembers. I don't know, but he really didn't want to deal with us. And on top of making it clear that we are garbage and he didn't want us there, we had to then pay out over $50 for food that was just not that awesome. Really enjoyed the burger! I had spent the morning hiking Mt Tamalpais and was craving a burger + beer. The server was phenomenal - very attentive and nice. The burger was delicious - the meat was seasoned which makes a huge difference, the mushrooms I added were super tasty, the cheese was a nice thick slice. State Room in San Rafael provides a great meal you'd usually have to go to a big city to enjoy. We made reservations for a Saturday in July for my birthday with a large group including some kids. Since it was early, there was still some space for drop-ins. We were promptly greeted and seated. The decor was decidedly modern without overdoing it with the edison bulbs. I liked how different each of the areas were, with the bar separate in design from the other seating areas. We had a booth type seating off on the edge of the space, which was oddly comforting. A bit noisy for the size of the place, or perhaps because of it. I had crispy fried chicken, which was overly breaded but moist due to brining. Those salty soaks are a great way to keep meat at peak mouth-watering goodness. While the swiss chard was not my fav, my fries were OK. I should have had the smashed potatoes, which I snagged a couple of from my sister, they were way better with a salty crispiness that complimented the chicken. Sister had a perfect steak, and also raved about said crisp potatoes. Kid options were good, easy foods within the new american concept. My brother in law enjoyed his cuban sandwich, Mom also had the moist chicken and I forget what Dad had, but no complaints. The games in back kept the kids occupied for a bit while we waited forever for dessert. The service was friendly, but the kitchen died right before dessert, which was hit and miss after such a long wait. We shared a great brownie sundae, super rich; but the crisp with unripe stone fruit of some kind and burnt, undercooked topping was a big disappointment.
