After a day at the beach, our gang decided on pizza. We found this place online, a few people calling it "the best pizza ever". Service was fine. Not smiling or welcoming, but attentive. Ambiance is 5 stars, fire pit, outdoor seating, great location. Good wine list. Menu is pasta, pizza, salads, and pasta. The pizzas are thin crust and "fancy". They feature things like feta cheese or carmalized onions. We all agreed that the crust was amazingggg. But it was so thin and floppy that ingredients just slid off. But here's a hot tip- the kid menu pizzas are totally full size pizzas, which the waiter failed to mention. So 1 cheese pizza could easily feed 2-3 little kids. We ordered one for each kid and went home with a TON of cheese pizza leftovers. The zucchini fries are tasty but served with an aoli that tasted like straight mayonnaise. Dinner for 4 , plus tax and tip came to $150. We're going with a solid 3 stars. An overall decent experience, but nothing to get too excited about. read more

Heard great things and thought we would try a new place for a change since it was New Years Eve 2 Star as it was otherwise an ok experience. Ambiance is nice with wood burning fireplace, service was not bad but not great, we didn't have to wait since we had reservations and it might have been a slower night due to the rain. But husband and I got pretty bad food poisoning from the food we shared- Chicken Parm and a Troop Pizza. From our view of the kitchen, it was pretty chaotic in there so looking back I'm not surprised. Kids had steak frites and were fine. $217 total with drinks and food (added a 4% living surcharge that I didn't notice until later) just feel it wasn't worth it for the "after effect" we had to endure. A staple whenever I visit Mt. Tam/Mill Valley! Love sitting outside on the warmer nights, such a cute and warm atmosphere throughout the entire restaurant. Service is great, food comes out quickly, and everything is yummy! The arancini is mine and my partner's favorite appetizer. The piña calmada is a great mocktail option for those who prefer not to drink! The pizza flavors are amazing! I would say the dough/crust is not as crispy and I know some people enjoy their pizzas that way. Make sure to ask for it well done if that's the case! Nonetheless, everything was perfect. Had the eggplant parm - it was good except for the claggy thick slice of motz on top that wasn't melted. But the eggplant was delicious, as was the sauce. Also had the salmon that was perfect. It was on top of a smooth, fresh hummus with a corn salad - simply divine. Asked for some bread and were given 2 slices of 'grilled' bread that they charged $2.50 for!!! I guess when I asked for bread and the waiter said 'an order of bread?' I should have guessed. I know it's a small issue, but we won't be coming back. Too many other options. read more

I want to take a few moments to update my review, as Tamalpie has long been a favorite of ours. Since the beginning, Tamalpie has been a gem of a place because they are all about community. I used to order their pizza packages during covid that we could assemble our own pizzas at home. We visit regularly even though I don't live in Mill Valley anymore, and my friend--whose birthday we were celebrating--especially loves the chicken parmesan. We were really looking forward to another great evening together. Five of us arrived a little early and enjoyed some time at the bar. Once almost all of us arrived, we were seated outside. A woman showed us to our table, and as I was about to sit down, the server asked how many more were coming. Thinking he was asking me, I responded that there would be eight. He replied, "I'm not talking to you," which caught me off guard and admittedly started the evening on a sour note. After we were all seated and our last two guests arrived, we ordered drinks and a couple of appetizers. Some drinks came out quickly, and the Brussels sprouts and cauliflower were as delicious as always. However, only half the drinks arrived, and there was some confusion when three random spoons were placed at just a few of our plates after we already finished the appetizers. When we inquired about the remaining drinks, the food runner let us know it wasn't his responsibility and said he would find our server. The server returned to take our main course orders, and we added a pizza to share for the table and a couple more drinks. The pizza arrived first, followed by seven out of eight of our entrees. One of our guests, who had ordered the short rib pappardelle, didn't receive her meal, and it took a while before we were able to get the server's attention to ask about it. At one point, he walked right past us and into the parking lot. When we finally got his attention, he said he'd check with the kitchen. Meanwhile, we were still waiting on a few drink items, including a bottle of ginger beer that needed to be opened by the guest. Then, to top things off, one of our friends was stung by a bee. While that certainly wasn't the restaurant's fault, we struggled to find anyone who could bring us some ice until we went inside ourselves. Eventually, the server explained that the kitchen had run out of fresh noodles and had to make more, which is why the pappardelle was delayed. Thankfully, our friend was able to eat the last piece of pizza while waiting. Once her dish arrived, we shared a few desserts and ordered tea. The server insisted on singing even though we had already celebrated and already sung to the birthday girl with our own candle. Before bringing the check, he asked if we needed anything else. We reminded him that we never received the tea. He offered to bring it and said he wouldn't charge us. A large pot of tea did arrive shortly before the bill which included large party service charge. At that point, we were told the restaurant was closing and we needed to wrap up. We had been seated right on time for our 6:45pm reservation, and I completely understand it was a busy Saturday night in Marin. Still, the experience felt disorganized, which was disappointing for a special occasion. I want to emphasize that we love Tamalpie and will likely return, but I will think twice about planning a large group celebration here again. read more

The place is always solid, the kale salad, Brussels sprouts, and the Tenderfoot are our go- tos! I'm sad the overall ratings on this place are less than 4stars thats not fair! Running any kind of small business is really hard in Marin. Some of the reviews I read were pretty rough for no good reason. Incase you haven't noticed there are lots of empty store fronts all over Marin, if that's what you enjoy keep beating up these places on Yelp. Where do you think these servers & cooks live? Long overdue review. I have ordered to-go and also have dined in multiple times here. The is always one of my go to places when I am in this neighborhood and they never disappoint. This time we ordered Rainbow Carrots, Rigatoni Pesto and Tenderfoot pizza. The carrots were surprisingly good. They had a caramelized sweet taste. The garlic breadcrumbs on the Rigatoni was a great touch which elevated the taste. The Tenderfoot pizza is what I always order from here. I am a big fan of the lemon they serve with it and the chili oil for dipping the pizza crust. Great service. Great ambiance. Great experience overall. read more

We rented out the party room at Tamalpie for our wedding rehearsal dinner, and it was a big hit! Food was fantastic and our server/showrunner (Josh?) was amazing and kept everything moving at a good pace. We had one large hiccup that was almost catastrophic, as our booking was almost LOST during a turnover of the restaurants manager, which was a shock. Just be sure to double/triple check reservations if you have made them far in advance! Note that the decor and atmosphere of the main dining areas are fantastic, but the party room in the back is quite barren/industrial by itself, so plan on decorating if that's not your vibe! read more

Tamalpie has it all: great food, great service, great atmosphere. We've taken large groups here many times and somehow the staff juggle all the orders perfectly and are so patient with kids running around and general chaos. The food is fantastic. And they have some great gluten free options for food and alcohol free options for drinks. Highly recommend! read more

When visiting Mill Valley, I love to stop by Tamalpie for an authentic Italian. They're always open and service is the best! Usually have a salad, pizza or pasta. They make a lot their fare in house... you can eat or out in the patio where they have heaters and a warm fire pit..great for the winter. They have a full bar, espresso and big screens for those big games. They have house made desserts. Last time we were there, Chef Nester was passionately working on a Key Lime pie. I have been coming here for years, when I lived in SF and now living in Marin. The food and service are always consistently excellent and friendly, with high quality ingredients and a cozy vibe. Some favorites are the minestrone soup (homemade), broccolini, Goddess salad, chicken Parmesan and any of the pastas but the ragu and bolognese sauces are especially great. Not sure about the reviews that talk about small portions, as we usually have leftovers to take home. The desserts are not overly sweet, and I especially like the butterscotch pudding and the warm cookie with milk. read more

My friends and I came to Tamalpie after hiking in Marin and we were STARVING. We brought our dog to the dog friendly outdoor seating which was a plus. The waitress was friendly and attentive and our food came out quickly. The calamari wasn't as crispy as I usually like but it could have been because we put lemon on it. The Caesar salad was good but didn't blow me away since the dressing was unevenly dispersed. The star of the show was the Tenderfoot (mushroom) pizza! The crust was soft and baked to perfection. My boyfriend really liked the Railroad grade (pepperoni) pizza and also agreed that the crust was fantastic. I would definitely go back and sit outside on the patio by the fireplaces on a cool night. I have been coming here for a white now with my family. At any time of the day and during any season, they are always consistent with their food and flavors. I appreciate their consistent quality of flavor and materials in everything they make. Their salads are very bountiful and their pastas aren't too salty or over-sauced. I made a reservation a week in advance for 4 people (inside) on a Friday night. When we arrived, the hostess said the only tables available were either outside or in the back at a crowded communal table. She was able to accommodate by giving us the back table to ourselves, but it was annoying that our reservation wasn't respected. It took a while for us to be seated after the fact and the server didn't acknowledge us for another 10 minutes. We had to request very basic things (water, plates etc.). It was clear the staff were very busy and overwhelmed, so it seems they need to either hire more people or limit the number of customers in order to provide better service. The ambiance is nice in the front but the back (where we were seated) seems like a bland overflow room. The pizza itself was good but nothing to write home about. Mill Valley is really lacking on good restaurants open for lunch, so Tamalpie was a nice surprise on the city's main drag. I ordered a few things for my group - the arancini, brussels sprouts, and the Cascade and Bootjack pizzas. The arancini was average but tasty and the brussels sprouts were excellent. The pizzas were phenomenal, with the Bootjack in particular hitting all the marks with sweet, spicy, rich, and savory elements and the exceptional crust. I also had the Fireside cocktail, which I found a little unbalanced - it could have used something to balance out the herbal spiciness. Service was okay, a little awkward at times (taking the order all at once...?) but was fine for what it was. The reason for the three stars rather than a 3.5 or 4 is due to the 4% junk fee "living wage surcharge" added onto the receipt. The fee is not disclosed on the menu or on their website. Visited Tamalpie Sunday afternoon after a hike in Tiburon and was pleasantly surprised. They have a cozy outdoor seating area with a fire pit which is very nice. We ordered the calamari and Caesar salad to start. The Caesar was very good, but on the heavier side with dressing. We ordered the Tenderfoot and Railroad Grade pizzas, which balanced one another out perfectly. The Tenderfoot was a white sauce with mushrooms, while the Railroad Grade had your typical tomato sauce and provided the right amount of saltiness with the pepperoni. Loved that the pizza was super thin crust, yet held its form with a nice crisp. Would definitely come again if in the area! read more

Came here on a Sunday after an intense 8 mile hike and was looking to grub. Came by to Tamalpie and was super excited to hear the live music that was playing. I absolutely love good food with an experience. Dress nice & bring a date because the ambiance is definitely here. Beautiful indoor and outdoor seating, opted for sitting inside on the patio that was covered which was lovely. Food: The Salmon was beautiful, an array of veggies that went well together & a grilled salmon that was soft, yet held it's shape very well. 10/10 for presentation. Pizza: The pizza was good, not fabulous, but good. Served us meatballs free of charge, a saving grace, due to our misplaced order. We tried their $16 Bloody Mary, but for a drink served in a pint glass, and at that price, we didn't feel any of the kick we had anticipated. I am gluten free, so it's always an adventure if my husband and I want Pizza. The service was very good ( but it was a slow time- Sunday at 3:00). We ordered the Caesar to share. It was very large and well dressed with extra crispy croutons. Pretty rich. We then shared a gluten free Pizza with crumbled sausage, caramelized onion, and mozzarella. No sauce. It was the best gluten free crust I have ever had! A lot of cheese! Again, very rich, but delicious. The only drawback to the menu is that you mostly have to stick to the pre- written pizzas. read more

For $17 the salad was underwhelming and was missing any real flavor. The pasta also lacked balance and just tasted like cream. The pizza was our favorite part of the meal, but even that fell short because the crust was so chewy and quite unpleasant to finish. For $90 with no beverages, this was quite disappointing and does not meet the quality and standards other restaurants in Mill Valley have set. We were excited to give Tamalpie a second try after living here for three years and only eating there once, but it failed to meet expectations again with high prices and little flavor. read more

Look, usually this place is pretty good. Go in person - the arancini is pretty good and so is the pizza. But these guys are terrible at delivery. We spent a bunch of money to get a large pizza and they forgot to give the delivery driver... the pizza... so she only delivered a (very expensive) salad. Normally I'm not one to complain. But for the price, these guys should be able to consolidate orders and get that right. It is (most certainly) not rocket science. read more

Splendid experience at Tamalpie. I'm a bit befuddled why it doesn't have higher ratings. Is it because the wind can swoop in to make the patio a bit cold, because honestly I love the wind and fog and that's why I live in the Bay Area :) I digress. The food was absolutely awesome. We got the Tuscan fries, Mill Valley goddess salad, and the mushroom pizza. My boyfriend and I remarked on how yummy the crust of the pizza was (it seems to have kind of a Roman "pinsa" feel to it). The wild mushrooms were bountiful. We devoured everything. The hostess was really sweet and turned a table for me and my boyfriend, so that we could sit side by side.
