Like many people, I've always had a hard time finding good hairdressers that deliver consistent results. I've hopped around the barbers in Jamaica Plain and Brookline and they are usually focused on seat turnover and they didn't deliver what I wanted. As soon as I came to Station 8, I knew I finally found the hairdressers I would stick with. I've seen two different stylists here, most recently Michael, and am very satisfied with both the results and environment of the salon. I absolutely trust them with my hair and I know they listen to what I ask for. I will (and consistently have) recommend this salon to others! read more

I do not get my hair done here, but have taken my teenager and it is a striking contrast to my own salon experiences. If you typically see a stylist that makes you feel super welcome and important and pampers you, this is not the salon for you. No one will greet you, if they're running late no one comes by to say anything, there are 2 couches in the middle of this very, very loud space with a few magazines, and there are no refreshments or anything. You may get your appointment canceled the day of and there's no one else who will cut your hair, you're just SOL and booking months out like it is a brand new appointment. I am not particularly impressed by that type of stuff and therefore I do not patronize this salon. That said, the benefit of Station 8 is you can get a cut or color with a particularly skilled stylist. My kid wanted a side shave and Hannah did a really great job. It's kind of expensive, you can only tip in cash, you need to reserve your appointment with a credit card, and you really can have that appointment canceled because no one else can jump in and cover. I think if you set your expectations, figure out the stylist who can make your dream 'do happen, then you'll be a-OK. FYI- they don't have any books with haircuts/styles, so bring some photo ideas on your phone. read more

The salon is incredible, and I've gotten great service there in the past. Plus the receptionist (Jimmy, I think his name is?) is kind and lovely to chat with. However, my recent experiences with Noelle have left me disappointed and frustrated. She's difficult to talk to so I stopped trying, cut my hair the second time in a way that left me feeling ugly, and stabbed me twice with the scissors while trimming my bangs. Particularly did not enjoy that last part. There was hair on the chair when I went to sit down, that I had to scoop out and remove myself. I had to ask for a towel or something to get the hair clippings off my face as she just watched me struggle to see and not get it in my eyes. And seemingly couldn't care less that I was unhappy with the cut when I opened my eyes and saw what she'd done to my bangs and face framing. I went home to fix it a bit myself and self soothe by remembering that hair grows. The blowout even sucked. Never again. read more

pros: friendly staff and ample local cons: Did not receive what I requested 3 weeks ago. This was my second time to the salon. The first time another hairdresser, Al thoughts friendly, messed up my hair. This time I thought I would try the owner who allegedly has 20+ years experience. I showed the owner 2 pictures and explained I wanted the sides to be at an angle and to avoid texturizing as I have thin hair. The pictures showed a short cut at least 3" long but when he finished my hair was less than 1" and texturized so much anyone could see my scalp from the distance! I now look like a boy and will have to wait at least 2-3 months for my hair to grow to look half way decent. For those reasons I would not return to this establishment or recommend it to anyone. I would ask the owner and all stylist to Please listen to their customers. Don't do what you want but what they ask and pay for $97 plus tip. read more

I really wanted to like this place since it had great reviews and was close to my house. Unfortunately my stylist did not listen to anything I asked for, disregarded my reference picture, and ruined my curl pattern by thinning my hair out and giving me a pixie cut I did not want. My bangs are uneven and too short, I even had to comment and ask them to stop cutting. I am transgender man and made a note that I didn't want my cut to be feminine, but I sobbed when I got home because I was given a pixie cut. I have been misgendered consistently since I got a haircut here. My confidence is at an all time low and it will take ages for my hair to grow back out. I was also charged more than was listed on the website without an explanation as to what I was being charged for. It was over 80$ for a couple inches off my hair. I cannot recommend unfortunately, especially for transgender men. I'm glad others have had good experiences here but I will not be returning. There is nobody I can e-mail about this issue since there's no e-mail on the website, and I am terrified to call them after my experience (I have an anxiety disorder). There's a policy where they will redo your cut for free, but my hair is already too short so that doesn't apply to me. TLDR: Gave me a haircut that caused severe dysphoria, ruined my curl pattern, and cut too much hair off. read more

I called here and attempted to make an appointment. The first few times I called no one answered which is fine. When I finally got ahold of somebody, before even offering a date or a time or telling me what kind of time frame they were scheduling out, the person wanted my credit card information. So I said to the person, "Well I'm not booking anything yet because you haven't told me what you have available, so we don't need to move to the credit card portion yet." The person on the phone sounded bothered by this very logical step, and when she told me the next appointment was a month and a half in the future, on a workday at 1 PM, I said that wouldn't work for me and I was going to go somewhere else. Why do you want my credit card number first? It's like going to a store and providing your credit card before you pick something out and decide to buy.... Nonsense. Settle down with trying to get my money first!! I mean it's already off-putting that you have to put a credit card down for hair appointment, (as someone who always shows up for every appointment I have, and early). But I was willing to do that if that's what a business wants to do to get me to commit because people tend to be flaky. However I don't think that this is a good practice, because it's kind of like treating all your customers like big 'ol flakes when there are only a percentage of people who flake. It's like locking down all the merchandise for your paying customers at CVS because there are a percentage of people who shoplift. It's a practice that makes sense for the business ONLY, not the honest customers. They can do whatever they want with their policies, I just see it as off-putting. I went back to my favorite Chinatown place, the very next day. read more

A little rough start with scheduling my appointment with a gift card but low and behold the end of the experience outweighed it all. Alayna did my cut and color and it was everything I had asked for. This place will double book your appointment so the stylist can see as many clients as possible. While my color was processing, Alayna was with another client. I didn't feel like I was ever waiting for her to come back, as processing takes awhile. She spent so much time on my cut I was so impressed, as it was just a trim with layers added. There coffee, water, or tea available for clients. I do know they do more than just hair too! I think massages and waxing. If I was in Boston longer, I would be back! read more

I'm very disappointed with management at this salon and a member of her crew. My mother forgot her 100% baby alpaca scarf there, so I called to asked them to please hold it for me, due to the fact that my mom lives in NH it took me a while to came back. The hair stylish who cut my mom's hair said that they have it and that they will hold it for us. However, when I went to pick it up they showed me a 100% acrylic $7 scarf instead, same color :/ I was very upset because I called 1/2 hour after we left and the hair stylist told me she got it, and now all of the sadden is gone. I am literally sitting under the dryer at Station 8 right now and needed to come write this review after/during a fantastic experience. I walked in, Fran at the front desk was delightful and told me where the restrooms were and offered me a drink. My cut was by Hanna, who I LOVED that she took time in the consultation to listen, ask questions, really have a dialogue to make sure we understood each other before heading to shampoo. How woefully rare is that? The cut further underlined that she knew what I was asking for and how to make it a reality. My hair is not fully styled yet but I already love it. Went here to get hair and make-up done for a wedding. I was a bridesmaid and my stylist Christine was awesome! I wanted an updo that looked pretty and stayed up all night long after dancing for hours. She made this happen and two days later it is still in! She also did another bridesmaid and the bride's hair. We all looked fabulous!! Gia did all of our makeup and we looked hot! She found what worked best for each of us and did that. Mine was a little darker, another friends a little lighter, pink lips for the bride! It was a wonderful experience where we were able to be together while we got ready in fabulous space where we could talk, eat snacks and drink mimosas. I would highly recommend them for hair and make-up for any future brides to be in addition to their wedding party! read more

I didn't go to Station 8 until I moved out of JP, and I beat myself up about this. Now I drive from East Boston to JP to get my hair cut and styled at Station 8! Molly is my go-to stylist, and I always make my appointments with her. My hair looks and feels amazing afterwards. She's reasonably chatty and brings me coffee. It's the best. One thing about Station 8 is that it feels like a luxury salon, with robes, coffee and tea, beautiful decorations...everything. And the prices are great. I pay $40 for my haircuts, and paid $30 for a wavy blowout recently. I will continue coming here, because it's perfect in every way! read more

What an awesome down to earth salon in the heart of JP. The moment I walk into the door, I am greeted with a warm and welcoming "hello"! I had an appointment with Ben, he's such a cool dude! His positive energy flows throughout his body! It's hard to guess what hair color he will be wearing when I see him! He's a very talented stylist, with awesome ideas for my hair! Cash! He is a gooood cutter. I'm very particular about my stylists, and Cash is right on. He first cut my hair at a charity event to which he had donated his time (for tips). That he could cut my hair on stage, spending so much time making sure to get it right and make me look good, was a testament to the fact that he is cool under pressure. I like the Station 8 neighborhood (Jamaica Plain) and the fact that you can have a little nosh and take a little walk and get your hair done all during the same visit. And by "you" I mean "I" but you should do it, too. Matter of fact, maybe next time I will take my new haircut to Salmagundi and put a new hat on it!! read more

This place is so unfriendly towards new customers, avoid at all costs. I left in tears after being told I had to pay for services i didn't receive because it was my fault for not asking how long my appointment was going to take. You expect me to sit for 3 hours for a partial highlight and trim? Seriously?? And they put a hair mask on while shampooing after I told them I had to go, so didnt even blowdry my hair for $150, so had to walk home in the cold with sopping wet hair. Ashley never even tried to talk to me once during my appointment, and my hair looks worse than when I went in. Sent them an email where I explained my nervousness around getting hair services done and how horrible my experience was, and no reply. read more

I walked in here with my four-week old son and said, "Listen, I don't know how this is going to go. I'm a brand new parent. I don't really know what I'm doing... but I really need a brow wax." Geah (pronounced like Leah, but with a G) made me feel totally at ease. She did a fantastic job on my brows, but what really blew me away was how much she was OK with my son being there, and the fact that things were kind of unpredictable. Molly is phenomenal! So is the team who does scheduling at Station8. I came to Station8 after getting a terrible haircut elsewhere. Molly listened to what I was looking for and did exactly that. She was also very kind, fun, and has a great personality. I called a day ago, to see if I could get a trim before travel but Molly was booked. The person scheduling went out of her way to see if I could be squeezed in, and called me back with an appointment. I was excited to have my hair done at Station 8, as I was up for a big change re: creative color and cut. Unfortunately, the stylist did a really, really, really bad job. The cut was uneven, poorly texturized, and ugly and the color was devastating. Alayna gave me blue roots that bled as soon as I washed them creating a weird, sludge-like blue green hair that was destroyed from over processing. I tried getting in touch with the salon so they could fix their mistake, but after several attempts, messages, and emails, no one has responded to me. $260 later, my hair is fixed by a very competent stylist at Kent Newton. I wanted to like Station 8, and have many friends who have had successful color there. I unfortunately had a terrible experience. Beware of who you chose to dye your hair if you are trying something new. Make sure they have experience. read more

I had a really nice experience at Station 8. Alayna did a great job with my hair, which other stylists at different salons have struggled with in the past because it is quite coarse and thick. She not only gave me a great cut that worked with my hair texture, she also made me feel really comfortable and heard and gave great suggestions on how to take care of my hair. I went to Station 8 for maybe two years before deciding to move on. My haircuts there were always great. Ok, one was awful, but I later realized I didn't communicate well enough to get what I really wanted. Overall though, the stylists here are top-notch at what they do. The prices are middle of the road and pretty much what you expect. However. I did not have a single appointment that started on time. It was always 10-20 minutes late. I never knew what to do or how to communicate my displeasure to them-- I mean really, who wants to fuss to someone right before they cut your hair? Bad start. But the other end of it was that I was always silently fuming by the time I got into the chair. The clincher was my last appointment-- I had requested 6pm and the receptionist asked if I could make it for 5:45. Ok, fine. Except that the stylist didn't see me until 6:15, and NO ONE said a word of apology. My haircut isn't that complicated, so I've moved on to another place that charges less and sees me on time. She took me from the standard long hair trim to the deep black-brunette tone I've been rocking ever since to my most courageous move yet - a very short, edgy bob! There's a reason I've been more adventurous with Torrie - I trust her completely. Now that I'm ready to go back to medium or long hair, I will continue to go to Torrie because she's an honest, patient, and intellectual hair professional. If you kick and scream, she'll give you whatever you want, but beforehand will always give you her expert opinion if a look just won't work for your hair type or face shape. However, she'll offer you an alternative of the look you're going for that's better suited for the individual. read more

This salon has a nice, modern atmosphere. The people at the desk aren't always very welcoming and don't help you right away sometimes. I had a stylist that no longer works there that I absolutely loved but moved away. The last time I went there I had to go to a new stylist. She was not friendly and barely said two sentences to me. She took too much length off my hair and I ended up looking like Toad from Mario Brothers. Previous to my experience with her I would have given this place four stars. Surprisingly she has been a stylist there for two years! I'm surprised she has enough clients to stay there! She didn't listen to what I wanted. Complaints about her aside, I'm glad that JP had a decent salon here. I'd much rather go here than the barber down the street. I will definitely return for waxing! They use a a wax that doesn't use strips and is more gentle on the skin. However, I don't think I will be back for a haircut. It's also a pain to only be able to tip in cash. I really, REALLY wanted to like this place. And for the most part, I'd give it another try (maybe just with a different hair stylist). The third star was for the price ($45 for a long hair trim - definitely doesn't break the bank). I've had my hair cut by five people since I moved to the east coast. Two have understood what I was asking for. None of them are here in MA. I'm not sure what it is, but when I say, "My hair is heavy. I have thick hair. Please thin out my hair," people here seem to think - oh? thick, heavy hair? ok let me take off an additional two inches. No. Asking a hair stylist to thin out my hair should be different from, "please cut additional inches off the length" when I asked for the length to remain fairly the same. Instead, I came out with the same thickness of hair on my head, just less in length which is not what I wanted. For those of you who have a lot of hair on your head, the pain you feel when your hair has been tied up all day and finally let down is a real struggle. Next time, I guess I'll have to say, "please ONLY use your thinning shears today. I need my head to feel 5lbs lighter when I leave." read more

Most of all, though, I was just hankering for a change. In steps Drew. No man has ever cut my hair before. Now, no man but Drew will touch my locks ever again. I have never gotten so many compliments after a cut- Husband, friends, co-workers. Everyone noticed. And everyone loved it. Most of all, me. I can't remember being this thrilled with a cut. It wasn't drastic or dramatic- but the layers just laid perfectly; the bangs were the perfect length. Everything just worked. I've been seeing Geah for about a year. She fixed my eyebrows, and she's given me a recommendation for a chiro when my back was hurting and I didn't have insurance. She's amazing at her job and an outstanding human being. I saw Pam for a haircut for their charity benefit (which is great!) and I can't wait to go back. My hair is naturally thick and has a wave, but I wouldn't say curly. She cut my hair so I could have beautiful curls like I've always wanted, showed me how to curl my hair for even more oomph, and hooked me up with a sample of curl cream. I can't wait to go back to her! I told her I was super low maintenance with my hair and she listened and gave me a cut to reflect it. My sister saw Cash and helped with a huge hair transformation. She knew what she wanted, showed him pictures, and he eased her into it and it came out beautifully. The salon is beautiful and I love supporting locals instead of trekking to Newbury. read more

I think I might give this a 3.5 if I could. I am a recent transplant to JP, and was wanting to try this place before I decided on which salon would be "the one." I was super impressed with the yelp reviews and decided to give it a shot. It was easy to schedule an appointment with Cash. 7pm on a Wed. Nice. I got a call a few days before saying Cash had an opening at 6:30, would I mind coming in then. So I switched. So I was really surprised when they called TEN minutes before my appointment to say that Cash was running late and could I come at 6:45. Um...okay. I arrived at 6:45 and ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes. That was incredibly irritating, but I tried to let it go. It happens right? Aesthetically, the salon is gorgeous and luxurious feeling. It definitely has a JP feel to it. I mean what salon carries copies of Bitch magazine in the waiting area? I liked Cash immediately. He listened to what I wanted, and was incredibly easy to talk to. At the salon, I was very pleased with the result. I loved my haircut. So as you know, it never looks like it does in the salon in real life. So, I must admit I am less than satisfied with the cut now. There are parts that kind of stick out funny, like Dennis the Menace, and if I don't blow dry the front section looks strange. Good news is that the salon is willing to do a "re-do" at no additional cost. I will go back and see what happens! read more

I've been going to Station 8 for a few years now, and there's a reason: this place is awesome. I started going to Lily and, when she moved away, started seeing Sam. Both stylists are the kind of people you can talk to, joke with, or feel comfortable remaining silent around while they work their magic. I always color my hair and never really know what I want. Somehow, both Lily and Sam are able to translate my non-sensical ramblings into freaking awesome color. I feel totally comfortable saying to Sam, "Do what you think is best." I totally trust her judgement. The salon is fun and has a comfortable vibe. Also, they play the Pixes (one of my favorites) a lot over the speakers. I took off one star because they only accept cash tips. Not the stylists' fault at all, but annoying. read more

I came in here on a friend's recommendation and got Lily. Lily was amazing. She took time to listen to what I wanted, or rather the fact that I didn't really know what I wanted. We chatted about it and her suggestions felt like she was reading my indecisive little mind.
