Icon Salon is overprice, snobbish and out of touch with the newer trends and styles. Its clientele is overwhelmingly from the same demographic, aka, wealthy elderly women from Newton/Chestnut Hill. They all seem to want the same bob cut and cover their silvers. The stylists have long lost touch with anything fresh and new. I got color done by Sasha and haircut by none other than Marco. I was quoted $350-$400 when I made the appointment. The price I paid? $780!!!!! It was a SINGLE COLOR process to match my dark hair and was suppose to be an edgy A cut (longer in the front, shorter in the back type of bob). What did I get? A GOLDEN BLONDE root and the haircut of Edna from The Incredibles. I kept telling Marco, that isn't the look I was going for. He asked me to be patient for the final result. At the end, when he dried (fried) my hair, he quipped, you look so cute! it's like you put on 15lbs without actually putting any! Well, geez! That's a new type of compliment!! Looking fat without having gained any weight and then paying ridiculous $780 for it! Sasha was defensive of her lousy job by saying she didn't know she had my appointment and she had to be creative (take shortcuts) to keep my appointment and Marco was so full of himself. Absolutely the worst experience, the worst hairstyle and let's not even talk about the price jacking and cheating. There are many better options than this outdated pompous salon. read more

I'm super particular when it comes to my hair and color, and what she does is pure magic - it's perfectly blended with just the right amount of contrast, so natural, and the color is totally on-point. It's flawless. She also does my sister's hair, who is a brunette, and her hair is gorgeous as well. She's just insanely talented and I can't say enough great things about her. I see Carlos at Icon for haircuts and partial foils for coloring. I've moved across the country at this point and I still won't have my hair done by anyone else - he is worth the trip back! Carlos is an artist both in and out of the salon. He takes his time and is super receptive to any requests or feedback I have throughout the process. I've referred many friends to Carlos and every single one of them has left him not just satisfied but genuinely impressed and so happy with their hair! I chose Icon for my balayage because I thought that they were a well-established salon. I cannot express how disappointed I was. I gave the stylist explicit instructions that I wanted my hair to look natural (e.g. small amount of contrast, and subtle tones), but she did exactly the opposite. Following my balayage treatment, my dark brown hair was full of practically blonde strands of hair. Even better, my hair turned gummy and was breaking easily. For the cut, I gave clear instructions that being able to put my hair back was a MUST for me. Once more, the stylist did her own thing and proceeded to cut face framing pieces that do not tie back. I was so upset by the color, I tried going to another place to have it corrected after blowing $400 here, but even they told me my hair was too damaged to take any more color for another month. I called Icon to speak with their manager 2-3 weeks ago, and she was meant to call me but never did. The stylist even DM'd me via Instagram and practically attacked me about how my disappointment was unwarranted and her work was impeccable. Save your money. Go elsewhere. This salon is over entitled and does not deserve your business. read more

I was in search of a salon that did Devacuts in the Newton area and found Icon on the DevaCurl website. I made an appointment with Kiki through the web portal on the Icon site. I called the day before to check how I should arrive with my hair. When arriving to the salon the next day I was surprised how packed it was! The receptionist was super friendly and directed me to the back coat closet to hang up my jacket and grab a bib. Kiki came over and introduced herself and had me promptly take a seat. We went over how I wanted my hair styled and what exactly I was looking for. This was the first time in my life that a salon wasn't scared or apprehensive about touching my hair (I have extremely tight and thick curls that are hard to work with). Kiki was absolutely excellent, she went through shaping my hair and making sure that each curl fell in the right place. It was my first time having a dry cut and I have to say it's been absolutely life changing. This is the best haircut I have ever had in my life. Icon is a bit pricy ($85 bucks for the devacut and wash afterwards) but it is well worth it. I will definitely be heading back the next time I need a cut! read more

I have been to so many nail salons in the Newton/Brookline area and she does the best mani/pedi I've ever had. Her work is meticulous (as in perfect nails when you walk out), she gives the best hand/foot massages, and keeps things extremely clean. She sets her schedule around her clients' needs, and is willing to come in early/stay late any day of the week to accommodate my busy schedule. Plus, her prices are very reasonable - same or less than other nail salons in Newton Center. And on top of all that, she is a genuinely kind person and I always enjoy talking to her while I'm getting a mani/pedi. What more could a girl want?! read more

I had my first visit and Icon recently, and I was beyond thrilled! I saw Kiki for a style makeover, and I am LOVING my new look. The entire staff was super attentive and professional (one of the assistants, Paula, gave me a great shampoo/condition), and I enjoyed the entire experience. Kiki gave me an updated cut that completely flatters my face,and feels so healthy. (My hair was in desperate need of some TLC!). I've been been getting my hair cut here ever since it was called "Robert Edward" in 2001. Ed, the owner, always did a fantastic job and I'd recommend the salon to anyone, male or female. Just had an absolutely fabulous experience at Icon Salon with Kiki!! Everyone I interacted with was so great and friendly! When I called Saturday morning to see if there was ANY chance I could get an appointment for that day Anthonie who I spoke with was so sweet and made it work, what a gem!! Kiki was so patient with me as I was making a big change and cutting off like 6 inches! She talked me through it, gave me great ideas and overall just made me so comfortable!! Another part of the experience that meant a lot to me was at the end of the appointment when in other salons I find stylists to turn into sales people for products this was not the case and funny enough I ended up buying 3 products! Kiki told me about the products she was using but never felt pushy or like a sales person! That is super appreciated by me who gets uncomfortable in those situations in the past in other salons! First time comming into icon i was expecting this to be my go to salon. I came in and I had high expectations for this one stylist that had awesome reviews and photos on instagram . I was most confident that I was in good hands . I previously had my hair balyage a pretty blonde color and I just wanted to lift the balyage higher with a icy Blonde. Unfortunately when she showed me my hair after the first rinse I wanted to cry . My roots were orange and my end where purple almost as if left purple shampoo in my hair for to long . We then rinsed and used olaplex and toned ect. The final result was a washed out ashy blonde with orange roots. I didn't even bother causing a fuss I just paid gave a tip and went home . I have a police ball to attend to with my hair looking washed out . Very disappointed read more

The stylist was condescending and self-righteous about my hair requests, the shampooer was gruff, the hair washing sink was physically painful to sit in and to top it all off, they didn't do an adequate job with the capes. I am joining Yelp to write a great review about Amy S. I have good hair but it had been funky-looking and not to its full-potential ever since a bad haircut a couple of years ago. Several other cuts began to restore it to its former glory but it was not until I saw Amy S. that it has truly come back to life! She paid attention to how my longish wavy/curly hair fell and did a detailed cut with little clippers so it had just the right angles/movement- which is exactly what my hair needs. I have tried to explain this to many stylists but Amy got it right away and delivered! My hair looks great again and I will keep going back. The salon itself is also super cute, everybody is nice and all the stylists are good. I go in for blowouts fairly regularly and they've always been quite good. I came in for the first time because of the great raves I see on her social media page. After $255.00 later, I did not feel like I went to get my hair "professionally" done. My hair look like I forgot to dye the bottom half of my head. I reached out to this stylist after and said, "I've noticed the bottom half is still black." Her reasoning was that she didn't want it to get brassy. I had also asked for a cut. She shaved the front tips of my hair shorter, and that was it. Mind you, she mentioned she can add some "texture." Afterward, I reach out to numerous stylists to consult and all can agreed and confused as to why half of my hair was not touched. I was not a bad client. I left and still gave her a nice gratitude. This place is not the luxury salon I expected it to be. Way overpriced and my hair looks the same if not worse than when I went in. I'm looking like 2009 Lindsay Lohan. I had high expectations because of the good reviews. The website said 100+ for a partial foil so I expected to pay about 150. I was told that blow dry would be extra so I declined and was offered a hairdryer to blow dry my own hair. Even 100 would be a little high to ask your clients to dry their own hair but I didn't really mind. When I got to the cash I was told it would be 220. That's absolutely ridiculous as I've been to very high end salons that serve complimentary champagne and other extras and I have paid less for a full foil. Upon further examination of my hair at home, it's orange tinted. It looks as though the color did not process for long enough. I'm so disappointed. I was planning on getting my extensions redone here in a few weeks and was told it would be $150. However due to the price discrepancies and the lack of quality behind the exorbitant prices there's no way I'm giving this salon another chance. I find this place deceitful to say the least. read more

I went in about a month and a half ago because I read great reviews about Diva cuts with Kiki. She wasn't available so I did a regular women's cut with Yvette on a Sunday, which was awesome for my crazy schedule. Yvette was super sweet, did exactly the cut I wanted, and was very attentive. I'm always nervous about cutting my hair as it's super curly and not all stylist seem to know how to work with hair like mine. She did an amazing job and I will definitely be back! read more

I had known this place from my favorite stylist who used to work here but never got around to come this far again (45 mins one way) after he left. So for my very special birthday (and after having a baby last year and growing my hair for almost 4 months), I planned a special, pick-me-up, makeover, make-me-feel-good kind of haircut with Tatiana, after reading multiple reviews about her. She is a lovely person, and we discussed what I was looking for, making sure she knows my must haves - one of them being leaving enough length to be able to tie my hair into a pony tail for my workouts, even if she proposed to cut them shorter. She proposed to cut my armpit length to shoulder length, which was fine by me (hesitantly though). HOWEVER, when her scissors chopped off a huge length, I almost had a heart attack. I told her that it looked shorter from what I could see and I was convinced that they will fit into a ponytail. It was too late by then. I was sitting with a lump in my throat for the last 20 mins of my cut//blow dry. The damage had been done. Once finished, I asked her about how would I fit into a pony tail, and she pulled my hair back and you still could. All she could hold were maybe 40% hair together!!! Not sure who was she trying to convince. My hair were cut to chin length from armpit length, while the deal was to cut them around shoulder length. Apologizing she said not to worry, that she's going to compensate. My thoughts were "how does one even compensate the loss of 4 months worth of hair growth and the disappointment on my birthday!". My day was completely ruined, only if she could see my tears. At checkout I was offered a MERE 20% discount. Really?! For not listening to a customer's requirements and not validating before using the scissors to chop the length and completely ruining my day, just 20%?! In all fairness, the haircut in itself was done well but the KEY POINT is that is NOT what I had asked for. I don't have anything personal against Tatiana, and she was very warm throughout the process but she definitely needs to listen to what customers are looking for as their must haves. read more

I've been going to Icon Salon for several years for color and cut. Amanda is an exceptional colorist and goes out of her way to provide outstanding customer service. The haircuts I get from Marco, the owner, are incredible. I wear my hair short and he cuts it in a way that it grows out perfectly. Cuts are very pricey with Marco but given that I can go 8-9 weeks between cuts because they are so very good, I can justify paying more since I go in half as often as I would with other hairdressers. I am constantly getting compliments on both the cut and color. I recommend Icon Salon. read more

She is on time and always overly accommodating If I have a time conflict, she will work her magic to fit you in. Marco is an artist. Icon is not close to where I live, but I specifically make the trip there to have Marco take care of me. I have tried other salons close to me when I have been in an pinch, BUT I notice the difference in the cut. You truly pay for what you get here. Tatiana has been my hair stylist for the past two years. Her expertise, dedication and creative mind is what has continued to bring me back. The second I sit in her chair you can see the wheels turning in her head and her eyes start to light up when she becomes inspired. When I went to other salons in the past I would always bring magazine clippings of the styles I wanted to try. With Tatiana I don't have to do that anymore! She presents all these amazing new ideas and she gets you excited to go outside your comfort zone and make you feel beautiful inside and out. I have been going to Icon since it was first Robert Edward Salon. My Mom and I followed Ed and another stylist to the Salon from Genesis and across Newton/Chestnut Hill for several years until the salon opened. I have seen several different people as the location as changed and there have been different reasons why I have stopped seeing one hair dresser or another--mostly because they left the salon. I had been seeing Traci until a year ago. Albeit that she was never on time--and had several other issues, she got my thick, long hair. Traci left Icon over a year ago. Amy S. then came recommended to me by the receptionist at the salon. It was advertised to me that if I kept 3 appointments on the book with Amy at any time I would receive a 10% discount which seemed great to me--especially as a student on a limited income. The first two times Amy cut my hair it was ok--nothing special She was just cleaning up my long layered cut that I have worn for the past few years. About nine months ago I went to see Amy and we changed up my hair a little bit--which I learned that I hated--but that was my own fault. About four months later, Feb 2014, I went for a routine trim and was not only met with a lecture from the assistant who washed my hair about how bad my split ends were, but Amy lectured me about how I was not taking care of my hair. I understand that my dependence on my flat iron is my own problem--but I am going into a salon to make sure that I feel confident when i walk out--not self conscious. I told Amy that I hated the haircut that I had previously received in November and did not want the layers in my hair as short again. I was informed they were too dead and if she did not cut them short again I would be left with too many split-ends preventing my hair from growing. So i ended up with the shorter laters in my hair--making it look mullet-esque. Amy could tell I was unhappy as I paid but we agreed in the moment that I should try a keratin treatment so I would not have to straighten my hair as much. As I went to book the appointment I found out that the price Amy had quoted me was incorrect because she was not able to put the chemicals on my hair due to her pregnancy. It was recommended to me that a stylist, who did not work on weekends and had recently received her license could do the treatment at a woping $120. I made the appointment trusting Amy's recommendation. Amy also sold me a heat protectant spray that I was supposed to use prior to blowing my hair dry. The spray fried my hair and left it more damaged than before Amy had cut it a week prior! I left the salon and was some what alarmed that I had just spent close to $100 for a hair cut I hated and a spray i would soon learn sucked. My continued patronage here has ended. I absolutely would not trust anyone here to cut my hair again. read more
