I did my research and after consulting several artists Dooner here at Up in Arms was my final answer! Let me just say that being my first tattoo I was cautious in finding a good artist in a clean, comfortable location. I could go on and on but who likes to read a long review so let me just say, the staff and Dooner are professional and friendly and are there for YOU. The entire experience from scheduling to the preparation to the actual appointment including aftercare was seamless and simple. Yes you must get an appointment months in advance, but you can possibly get a walk in as well. I booked mine three months out but I also had a 5 hour piece of art. Dooner was exceptional and handled my anxiety like a champ. I felt comfortable the entire time other than the first tattoo jitters I'm sure most go through. The parlor was clean and comfortable with a great music selection playing. Conversation was easy and the entire experience, AWESOME! I highly recommend Dooner or his colleagues for your next art piece. You will be stoked as I've already had many people compliment me on mine. They're very skilled, knowledgeable, and clean (which is so important for a piercing place.) The guy who does piercings is so cool and really friendly. He's very helpful with advising you about pain levels, with telling you how to clean your piercing, and with helping you pick out your jewelry; he's also very patient as you're deciding where the piercing should go. He makes you feel really calm and less nervous when getting the actual piercing too, which I appreciate a lot. I've gotten pierced here on two separate days and have had great experiences with him both times. He also works really fast, so you're in and out with a new piercing pretty quickly. Piercing prices are honestly really reasonable for the quality and service you're getting. My friend's piercing fell out after she got it done here and she came back and they helped her put it back in safely. No complaints here! PSA they do 2 piercings for the price of 1 on Tuesdays, but the wait can get REALLY long since everyone and their mom shows up on that day for the deal. Would advise going earlier to secure your spot if you're going on Tuesday, otherwise you'll make the piercing guy stay hours past closing :( The waiting area inside is pretty limited (only a few couches) so if it's really crowded you might have to leave and come back. Also Sushi Kim 2 right next door is the perfect place for dinner if you're waiting for your piercing during dinner time. It's some of the best sushi and Korean food in the city. The prices were great as well - I paid $50 for my second lobe piercings (both the service and jewelry) but honestly, I would have paid more just because it was such a blast to talk to him. My friend paid $35 for her cartilage piercing, which is by far the best price for miles around. Luckily, none of us passed out, peed, or did both in quick succession. The shop was clean and the other staff were very friendly as well. Overall, we had so much fun and Joe did a great job with all of our piercings!

I am head over boots with the finished product! The process of getting a tattoo, to me, is annoying, but once it's done it's so worth it! Jess banged out a pretty big top shoulder piece for me (even with breaks) in under 3 hours. She is a great conversationalist and made me feel comfortable and chill the whole time I was there. The whole team at Alter Ego is really nice and great to hang out with. It's been a month now; and my tattoo has healed beautifully! I made another appointment to get more work done in September! I used to live right down the road from this place so figured I'd go there to get a quick, small tattoo. The tattoo is all line work - two triangle shapes and a check mark - not hard right? So I go to get my tattoo and walk out with this. The lines are completely inconsistent in color and thickness. If you look carefully, you can see where the thickness varies and the lines aren't straight. Since this was back in 2017, I have no idea who at the shop did this one. But that's my own fault for not caring enough until now.

With that said; here are some insights that may be helpful: 1) You can see by the examples I've attached, he takes pride in his craft. Great detail work/realism and a good knack for placing tattoos in the proper place. 2) Pricing was always fair. You get what you pay for - quality work done with quality ink in a sanitary environment. 3) John has always kept to his schedule and was always ready to start tattooing upon my arrival to his shop. Sessions for large pieces go from anywhere between 3-4 hours. 4) his shop is clean and his tattoo area is organized. He always sanitizes the area you are getting tattooed before, during, and after the tattoo. 5) John has a great personality - we got a long great from the get go. He's super easy to talk to. 6) His shop is consistently booked so be patient getting a time slot booked. That was the first thing that shocked me - how far out he is usually booked; sometimes months. It's worth the wait though! In conclusion, I definitely recommend going here if you're looking for a tattoo artist in the Butler area.
