We stopped in after a Ice Hogs game for a little late night snack because it was close to our hotel. We were greeted after several minutes and placed our order at the kiosk. It had been many, many years since I had been to a Steak 'n Shake so I was unaware how ordering happens. No big deal. We placed our order and found a seat. The restaurant was pretty clean except for the drink area... ugh, the drink area... the QR code thing to get a drink is completely stupid. Seriously, are they afraid someone might get a little extra Diet Coke in their cup or is this their way of getting customers to buy a more expensive shake? The food was good. I got a cup of chili and it was exactly how I remembered it. Two people in our group got chicken strips and my husband got a burger. Everything came out hot and the fries were pretty good (this is coming from someone who doesn't really like fries unless they are scalding hot). We have been back to Rockford for several Ice Hogs games since dining at Steak 'n Shake but we have skipped it for other "snacks". read more

I have to admit, growing up on In-N-Out burgers (one city away from the first one!) and experiencing burgers all over the country, it take a lot to impress me! In this area alone I've had Culver's, Beefaroo, Freddie's, Tom & Jerry's, Aero Alehouse, etc.... And the verdict: Exceptional! The flavor is off the charts! It is as good a burger as I have had anywhere, as in NOTHING BETTER! I had it twice in two days. The only way it could be improved for my taste would be to squash it out more and caramelize the edges like Freddie's does.... I will ask the nice guy running the grill to do it next time... but as far as the bun, condiments, burger flavor it is a 10/10. The prices are also super reasonable! Double cheeseburger and fries, $5.99! That's 1/2 pound of meat. Now for the new beef tallow fries??!! I couldn't tell much difference other than a little more golden brown. My son said he could taste a hint of beef undertone..... They are good, super thin. I didn't realize they had a Steak 'n Shake season salt until mine were gone. Next time. Super friendly atmosphere. Let's start with the appearance of all locations! Unlike some other restaurants which have decided to trade in tradition for a very unwelcoming environment. Steak N Shake retains that old-school look, which brings feelings of happiness, and is very welcoming. The food is real - real beef, with fries created with beef tallow. In other words, they don't want their customers to have health problems from their food because they honestly care! And last night when I had the happy experience of a wonderful young man who wearing the burger hat taking my order at the window, the experience was complete! The atmosphere is very upsetting. You're "greeted" when you walk in but then you order at a kiosk. Then, for your drinks you have to scan a QR code to get your drink. There are no signs or directions on how to correctly get your drink filled, so this could be partial user error; we scanned all the codes at once and were only able to get 1 large cup filled and 1 regular cup ALMOST filled. The manager(?) Janet walked up and gave us instructions, and when we explained what happened, she just stared at us with dead eyes and did not help us at all. We got our food, which wasn't the worst. The redeeming quality is the French fries. Do not get the chicken tenders though, you're better off getting McDonald's chicken tenders. The burgers were better, but could've also easily been a McDonald's McDouble taste wise. One of the workers was very sweet, I did not catch her name but she was very good at her job and got us to go boxes. My family and I felt a little rushed out, even though it was not busy. This is my first time at a steak 'n Shake. I didn't know what to expect first off, this location is fully automated. Nobody at the counter to take your order. You order on a touchscreen, and the cook does the rest. I did notice the manager was right on the spot asking if we needed any help, or if he could assist in any way. The burgers are prepared exactly as you would like them. Whatever ingredients you want, manually, enter them in. The french fries were a bit thin, but golden brown and delicious. The burgers were also outstanding. Fresh and hot. I also ordered vanilla milkshake, which came out in an old style shake glass...very refreshing. the prices were a bit steep, but with our economy today what do you expect? While in Rockford for a girls baseball tourney, my other coaches suggested I try this restaurant. At first I was skeptical because the reviews were not that great, but as I have mentioned before, I want to try different places and judge them myself. So one day after our game we came here. It was pretty busy but we got seated in less than 10 minutes. Upon entering, the motif was like and old diner, it was clean and staff were friendly. When we were seated it didn't take too long for us to be waited on. The menu had so many choices my brain was pretty overwhelmed. They not only served just the plain ol burger but steak burgers...yes, you heard me, STEAKBURGERS! Also If you want a great milkshake, well theirs tops the list. They have 21 variations and boy I tried two of them and they were ahhhhmazing! So here is what was on the menu: White Truffle Steakburger: It's a 6 oz. hand-crafted Prime Steakburger topped with Swiss cheese, grilled button mushrooms, caramelized onions and Truffle Aioli sauce on a toasted brioche bun and served with fries: I was so surprised by the way this tasted. It was literally like a gourmet burger. I totally loved the fries...they were thin and perfectly crunchy yet soft, not oily....YUM! The Bacon Lover's Steakburger: Double patty steakburgers with 2 slices of hardwood smoked bacon, and American cheese on a toasted bun and served with fries: my daughter said this is number 2 in her top five favorite burgers Jalapeno Crunch Steakburger: double Steakburger with pepperjack cheese, chipotle mayo, homemade salsa, jalapenos and fried onions: if you like spicy, this will make your day. My hubby is super picky about his burgers and he just LOVED this. Orange milkshake: just like an orange julien freeze but better!!!!! Mint oreo chip milkshake: just can't get enough of this! So all in all I would definitely come back. The only reason i couldn't give it a 5 star was because it took awhile for the food to come out. But hey, fresh takes longer right? There was only one other person in the restaurant when I entered. I was seated by one employee then had to wait awhile for a second employee to take my drink order. Then I had to wait awhile for a third employee to take my food order. Then I had to wait for my ticket after completing my meal because the large number of employees were sitting on the stools talking. Good food, mediocre service. Never stepped foot in this S'nS, but have done the Drive Thru plenty. I always forget to tell them what I want on my burger, so don't forget, they're made to order! The shakes are awesome and you can always do a half and half but I always do Vanilla. Drive Thru is easy peasy and you're on your way. read more

Food-wise, I've never had a problem with this or any other Steak 'n Shake. I have had a few "on the road" experiences where the service was so-so, but am generally well pleased in my many visits to this franchise (love! Love!! LOVE!! the Frisco Melt!). Last night's visit was a bummer, though, in one factor that will affect future visits. Whenever a good friend comes to town to visit his elderly mother, we would always meet at Steak 'n Shake late at night for food and long talks into the wee hours of the morning, because there are few places where we can do that without other dining/drinking establishments inevitably trying to get you out the door. But last night we discovered that this location is no longer open 24 hours as in the past (they close at midnight now). I'm sure the reasons are economic, and unfortunately we will not help in that area because we will have to find a new place for our visits. read more

It's a typical burger joint that has some different things. Their burgers are fine, nothing I would go out of my way to get. What they do have that I really like is the Chili 4-way. This I really do like and I haven't found anything like it at any other fast food restaurant. Their shakes and malts are good, probably some of the better ones that you will find outside a small mom and pop style ice cream store. What I don't like are their fries. They use these really thin shoe string fries and I HATE those. When I want a fry, I want to be able to dip it into ketchup, get a big glob on the end and eat it. With these things I have to grab half a dozen of them and then they are sticking out in every direction. Also, I have never found a shoestring fry that tastes good, I don't know why, but I always think they taste funny, it might be me, or it could be that the shoestring fry is the is the undesirable outcast of the fry world. I generally only use the drive through and the service there is fairly good. Depending on what you order it can take longer at times. IE, 4 large specialty malts takes longer than just a burger and unloved fries. read more

Little more specific multiple asked for no tomatoes on the burgers and wanted bacon, but NONE of the burgers have bacon and ALL of them had the tomatoes and none of the condiments asked for. :/ I have ate at multiple Steak'n Shakes with it being one my favorites to order, but this one not again, I'll pass without regrets and go to Five Guys. Ordered online, showed up and waited for 15-20 minutes which was fine until they gave us our order and it was missing a burger so we gave it back and waited around 10 minutes for them to give us our food again, we went home just to find out they messed our food up again. I feel like this place always hits the spot, especially late night after the bar. I usually come here for Frisco melt and fries. Everytime I come here the food is good and my food is always fresh. The staff are usually nice and the place is as clean as a 24 hr restaurant can be. This definitely my go to with all my family and friends. Well after the bar at least. read more

I worked here for only 1 day. During my interview the Owner (brother) Mike talked about how he wouldn't hire "ghetto" people who didnt know how to pronouce their words (that should've been my first red flag). He talked about the main population in Rockford are "ghetto black people" and he wanted to change his clientele to have customers more like "Panera Bread, starbucks or chipotle" instead of the "hood rat people that McDonald's and burger King gets." There was another gentlemen interviewing at the same time as me (African American) and he wouldn't give him the time of day because he was what he considered "ghetto." My training day arrived and I was shown how to do some things (not a lot, but some) by the Manager (sister) Slyvia. She was friendly. After she left for the day I was left to my own devices -- no one continued training me and I was left to fend for myself in drive-thru after only 3 hours. Which was super overwhelming. I also went thru an entire 9 hour shift with no break. When I had asked the Manager Slyvia about breaks, initially she had told me that if they had a minor on shift it's absolutely no question about whether they get a break, but for others - that wasn't the case. So the logical assumption was that this company/location didn't give out breaks...right? That proved more correct when the night went on and no one on the shift got a break at all (4/28/2023) Which, honestly, was NBD to me - but I do need and appreciate those breaks most businesses give due to ankle spurs I have. So, in an effort to not throw in the towel, I called the Diner before they opened the next day and asked to speak with the Owner Mike to see if I could change my availability to shorter shifts due to not getting breaks. HE FREAKED OUT ON ME ON THE PHONE. He raised his voice, called me a liar and was extremely snippy. He thought I was lying about not getting a break (apparently we are supposed to); to which he checked the cameras/computer logs to find I was TELLING THE TRUTH and I didn't get so much as an apology for him calling me a liar and making it seem like I made the whole thing up. He also got suuuuper defensive when I said I was told by his sister that we don't get breaks -- he wouldn't hear it at all just cut me off and told me "no that didn't happen, nope. No didn't happen. That conversation didn't happen." Like I had a reason to lie? What? (This is a mid-aged man arguing with someone half his age btw). And he acted as if he was there for the conversation Slyvia and I had. I was the one who had to be an adult and apologize for possibly misunderstanding what his sister had said to me, but the fact that I wasn't allowed to take a break (nor anyone else on shift) just kinda supported what I had 'thought' I understood from her previously. Mike was not at all shy to show that he was super mad at me for simply asking to have shorter shifts and due to his unprofessional and disgusting behavior I decided that this wasn't someone I wanted to work for. He showed his true colors and it would only get worse working for this guy. I would recommend that he undergo management training or sensitivity courses on how to speak to his employees because it's blantingly obvious why their turn over rate is so poor. Just know this is what you're signing up for if you work at this particular location and if you are of the African American population, this Owner significantly looks down upon you and judges you coming to his establishment and wishes you wouldn't. read more
