The food was excellent - far exceeded our expectations. It was flavorful and fresh. However our server's behavior is bringing the establishment down. He was curt and rude to us and we even heard him speaking rudely to other staff (possibly the chef). He even suggested that another party go elsewhere for dessert, because he didn't think what they offer is good (!)... When he came to our table to take our order he just stood there and said okay - not what can I get for you, or anything remotely polite. He also seemed to be in a hurry the entire time, despite it not being busy. It was easy to hear him questioning other staff in the back about their scheduling for the rest of the day, as if he was too important to be there. Watch out for their pricing! I ordered takeout (shrimp dumpling soup) from their online menu. Price=$8. At pickup, I was charged $18. When I mentioned to the manager that I thought I had been mis-charged, he said "Oh the price online is a mistake. It should be $18. We charge $12 for the dumplings and the broth is extra" and he left it at that. When I asked if they were going to do anything to fix this, he said, "Yeah, I have to speak to my IT guy" . No apology, no offer to adjust the problem in any way. The food here is usually decent and I hate to knock a local restaurant but their customer service is not good. read more

I went on Columbus Day. What a joke. I don't normally leave bad reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I felt it was necessary. When we arrived, there was only one person a white man working -- hosting, serving, and handling everything. It took a long time just to get seated, and even longer to place our order. I had the Khao Soi Gai. When the food finally came, my chicken was cold and the noodles were hard and undercooked. I asked for it to be fixed, and while the dish came back warmer, the noodles were still hard. The server says i'm not mad at you i'm mad at the people who work in the back. He asked have you had these type of noodles before? Of course I did but not at this restaurant . His excuse was egg noodles tend to be firmer . At that point, I gave up on the meal. The server did remove it from the bill. Despite everything, when I paid, the server made a smart remark that came off as rude and unprofessional, the server made a sarcastic remark about the tip -- as if 20% wasn't enough. The pork bun had nice spicing, but the chicken and mushroom one had none. I had the simple shrimp skewers with mango salad. The shrimp was overcooked and dry, while the mango salad was so spicy that it overpowered all other flavors. My wife's pad thai had tofu at tasted reheated. We put it to the side. Stopped at this hole in the wall with my partner when we were staying at our winter home in the Berkshires. We shared the steam buns, which were good but a little cold in the center, and we both tried a noodle dish. They got the ramen with pork while I got a Pho, both were good, but the service was lacking as it took way too long to put the order in and get the food. A little disappointed in some of the flavors. The chicken banh mi was more deconstructed than I expected. It was closer to an open faced grilled chicken sandwich in my opinion. The chili crisp sauce helped to give it better flavor however. The tonkotsu ramen had some decent flavor in the broth but was overtaken by the amount of micro greens. We've been watching a lot of movies while on vacation with Asian cuisine heavily featured. So naturally we were like we need Ramen. So we turned to Yelp for help. It was crazy though there is not much where we are staying in NY. We found we had to go 30 minutes out of state or 30 minutes in state. So we chose steam and just prayed it was what we were looking for. I have good news. It is EXACTLY what we were looking for. I started with he peanut tofu. This is one of my favorite dishes at Penang in Chinatown. Crazily enough I think the dish at steam was better. Perfect crisps of tofu that you dip in the sauce rather than the Penang way where it's used as a glaze. She got veggie curry puffs that were delicious. Then I got a Bah mi with chicken. Normally I do tofu. In fact I've never done chicken before. This was really good. Not sure if it's just never having had chicken before.... I don't think so. It wasn't spicy like the ones you get in philly that have jalapeños on them. We both got Thai teas which were perfect. The restaurant was cute inside and I liked the set up. Nice light jazz led to post Malone. I can do that. My musical taste has a wide range. The town looked like it had a younger crowd. However everyone still disappears at dark. read more

I went here for dinner a few days ago for the first time. It is a hidden, new gem in Great Barrington. It's a small space, but they do have a bar. I could almost move to Great Barrington for the food from Steam. In this smallish town I would never expected such tasty Asian food. This place isn't a sit down restaurant. You take the food either to go, or you can eat at some outdoor tables which are shared by 4-5 restaurants in the same building. We had a big group so we ordered basically one of everything and shared it all. They package it all nicely with the dry noodles separate from the soups and broths so the noodles don't get too soggy. My personal favorite dishes that I would almost move for: the Thai Pho, the spicy beef soup, and the Tom Yum soup. Their steamed buns are really good too - the bbq pork wasn't too sweet like most ones I've had. The egg one is good too. I wouldn't order the mushroom one again. read more

I absolutely cannot recommend this place enough. I love Vietnamese food but had never had bánh xèo before. I'm vegan and so options can be limited; ordering vegan often means getting an item sans main ingredients. Not so at Steam! They had vegan options for most things on the menu and they were clearly made with the intention of tasting good, not just serving as alternatives for a few picky eaters. Every ingredient in this item was insanely good, especially the tofu, which was flavored and cooked to perfection. The fried onions on top... the crepe... everything was so good and super fresh. The service was also fast and friendly. I am so bummed there's no quality vegan equivalent here in nyc (that I've found!). It was a hard battle between a 4 and a 5 star. They have potential but I'm not sure they're there yet. The banh xeo (a crispy and savory vietnamnese crepe) was amazing. The sauce seeps into the crepe and creates a flavor bomb. The protein is plentiful and the veggies are fresh. The khao soi was lacking; there just wasnt enough spice (not spicy spice, but flavor spice). The day I came, they were out of a lot of things because a storm had hit the day before. That might have played into some of the disappointment, disorganization in staff, and the long wait times (2 hrs!?). But... Overall, I'd say - give this place a shot. Its an Asian fusion that sets itself unique enough and had a lot of potential. read more

This is the greatest, healthiest and most friendly restaurant in all of Great Barrington. We had the most wonderful lunch there this past Saturday and it was worth every minute, and every penny. Steam Noodle Cafe was quite disappointing. I was really excited about the spot after seeing the rave reviews and also being able to try their Khao Soi. We specifically went out of our way to go to Great Barrington. We ordered at the restaurant, which they do advise against but upon calling their number I was directed to a machine that didn't give the option to speak to anyone. The wait for our food was 45 minutes but ended up being more than an hour. The food itself was decent but didn't really capture the flavors of the dishes. The dishes were a little bland and lacking the spice and flavor profile that really makes these dishes stand out. It was also off putting that the people who were taking orders were preparing food without wearing gloves and touching the herbs for example. As this is a minority opinion, if you do try Steam Noodle you must order ahead. I wouldn't recommend appreciate that they are offering a variety of Asian cuisines in this area. read more

The food was a very solid 4 and then some. Bahn xeo was awesome, so was the the Bahn mi. The ramen I've had better and the pork bun was a slight disappointment. To me what stood out the most was how nice everyone in the business was. We went back again and again for various stuff and they complied with our requests with a smile every time when other businesses in the area might have batted an eyelid (and did so) for some of the things. Disappointing taste, nice presentation though. Broth was ok. Good flavor but not exactly what I would call tonkotsu, they do say it is a lighter version on the menu though. The noodles were still stuck together at the bottom and tasted not cooked all the way through. The meat was horrible, thick slabs of pork that were fatty and pink in places, I couldn't eat it. Egg was done well and I did enjoy the sprouts, though not traditional. Veggie curry puff was really bland and could have used way more seasoning. If I'm in the area again, would try another dish but so far not impressed. For reference, I'm from SoCal so it's very possible my ramen standards are in the "snob" range. Cute cafe with a smaller, curated menu. I was surprised to see Khao Soi as an option and was excited to give it a try. We also ordered curry veggie puffs. The pastry on the veggie puffs was delicious but the inside was sub par. It tasted more like chicken pot pie with a hint of curry. The soup was served luke warm and didn't offer a ton of flavor. No one checked in on our table and when it was time to pay, the interaction we had with their employee was awkward and cold. In addition, be prepared to pay a minimum of 20% for tip while your server stands there watching you. The tip options presented on their pay tablet start at 20% which is totally off putting considering their service wasn't worth 20% of our bill. A chicken spring roll contained a piece of slimy deli meat that passed for the kitchen as chicken. The rest of the roll contained whatever they had on hand - and not in a good way. Worst service experience I've ever had. It took so long for someone to bring us menus that we almost left. Then another 15 minutes for water. Then 15 minutes to put in food order. My ramen was cold when it arrived and then after sitting there with empty water glasses the entire meal, our server finally made an appearance, threw the ipad in my face and said "$39". Steam noodle cafe has been our go-to when coming to the Berkshires for several years now. In fact, we loved the Khao Soi Gai so much we'd always order one to go to take back home before we leave. We were super excited this time to go back, but something was really off, maybe there's a new chef?? The Khao Soi Gai use to be very flavorful, in a thick curry, with delicious pickles, but what we got when we ordered Khao Soi Gai today tasted really watered down... the curry was also not the same consistency we were use to, the color was much lighter... really felt like they made the dish, and then poured a cup of water in the bowl to fill up more volume. It was really disappointing as we had been looking forward to the noodles and as silly and it may be, a highlight of any great barrington trips. We really hope this is just an odd day in the kitchen and not the norm now. We really enjoyed going there the years before. read more

Hard to know where to start. It's food coming out of a kitchen that clearly doesn't know how to put ingredients together. Utterly flavorless across the board. Ramen had raw red onion in it, undercooked noodles and overcooked chicken. How do you UNDERcook noodles in a broth? And raw red onion in a Thai dish? C'mon guys. Overpowered any flavor it otherwise should have had. Our other plate was the pad Thai, hard to mess that up, right? Chicken clearly cut from a rotisserie, seasoned with Italian herbs. So sitting in hot noodles cooked it twice, making it as dry as hell. Can't say a single positive comment about this place. I'd strongly avoid. read more

I like to feel like I'm pretty well versed in ramen. I've been to many noodle restaurants. This was probably the worst. We ordered the vegetable dumplings as an appetizer. They came out all stuck together by design I'm assuming which was weird. In order to get that look they also only fried them on one side so the rest of the wonton wrappers were pale and gummy. The inside was edible but just barely. There was so much raw ginger and green onion inside of them . Our meals came out fairly quickly. I ordered a bowl of kimchi ramen. First off it looked very nice. Three pieces of pork. Hard boiled egg. Bok choy. It had a large amount of alfalfa sprouts on top which was kind of the first red flag. Bean sprouts are traditional and actually add something to the noodles. Alfalfa sprouts are just flavorless grass. I mixed it up and noticed the large amount of raw red onion in the broth also the amount of noodles was a bit less than expected. You could also see the large amount of sesame oil on the top of the broth. I tried the broth first it was bland yet overpowering with the sesame oil. Sesame oil should only be used in small amounts and honestly had no reason to be in the ramen to begin with. The noodles were bad. Overcooked and gummy. There was maybe like 5 small pieces of kimchi floating around in the broth which were honestly the best thing in there. The rest was all raw red onion. So much red onion that an hour later I was still popping mentos to get the taste out of my mouth. I'm not from Great Barrington so I'm not sure if there are other noodle places around but skip this one for sure. The food was bland and made more for pretty Instagram photos than anything. read more
