Came here to check out the wetsuit selection as my friend was looking to buy one for the colder days approaching. I needed some wax for my skimboard. Wait, skimboarders? Guessing that's why we weren't given the treatment most surfers probably get. Hey, I know there is a stigma or whatever for skimboarders, but we're out there trying to catch waves just as well and while we may not be out dodging sharks and other locals, we have just as much fun and that's what it's all about really. So yeah, grabbed my dollar wax and my buddy decided he would buy his suit from the other surf shop in town. I don't suggest this place unless it's the only shop open, but then, just buy the wax, lol. Also not sure why brooke m is putting the basic same review in for two spots and giving them five stars with never even dealing with either place it seems. My girlfriend and I rented surfboards to go surfing at the state park. Matt was helpful in choosing some beginner boards, determining how long we should rent for, and he just got a handy credit card charge thingie for his iPad that makes transactions super easy. Since summer days are so long here, he let us return the boards after shop closing time. The reason why the shop closed relatively early? He was out there at the state park boarding as well. He even stopped by while we were out there at the beach to check up on how things were going and let us know how to drop off the boards! I've never surfed prior to this experience, but based on the friendly service and great rental rate we received, I'd totally go again. read more

Talked with Tom for a few days while I was in the area for work in Seattle....so I was setting up things over the phone, and email. I called him to check on rentals and he was extremely accommodating in getting me set up with a rental board (Libtech ...Lost), which was in my size range, along with gloves and fins. Both him and his shop hand, Ryan, went out of their way to get me set up. Ive been surfing Westport since I was 14 years old. This surf shop has been my go to spot every time I need something. Matt and the staff have been great. Their is no other surf shop around. I joined the military and was gone for over a year and came back recently to the steepwater surfshop and nothing has changed. They are friendly and always helpful. Yes it is close to the beach..yes it is very convenient. But these guys are asses. It maybe be carry over from the 'badassness' of living in Westport and being a local surfer but when a friend of mine rented a boogie board here they were treated like shit. The rental guy basically mocked him for renting a board. Wow..dick. read more

My daughter took a surf lesson for her 14th birthday. The shop was super helpful. They provided the surfboard, wetsuit and booties along with a temporary rack for my car to haul the board. Her instructor, Mina was very knowledgeable about the area and she was very patient. I was so happy to see my daughter get up on the board several times. She had a great time! read more

Visited Westport this May on a sunny Sunday with my girlfriend while visiting her family in Roy. Waves were head high+ and wind was offshore so I rented a wetsuit and board. Employees at Steepwater Surf Shop were unhelpful, sent me out in 53 degree water with a wetsuit with holes in the groin and armpit. The main employee (scruffy short-haired guy) told me when I asked about gloves "oh we don't have any, nobody uses them here". Ha! Asked the other guy (long hair quieter dude) and he rolled his eyes and gave em to me (90% of surfers in the lineup had gloves). Didn't let me pick out a board either, instead they gave me a plastic Bic clunker with dings, and said that's all they had. Been surfing for 20 years and these kook employees gave me the worst service, acting like it was such a pain to set me up with a board and wetsuit. Surf was pumping, got barreled and caught some big, clean, long waves but the Steepwater employees renting me old, worn-out equipment cut my session short because of hyperthermia, my nuts were literally numb. When i informed them of my dissatisfaction they got in my face and said," you need to go the fuck back to Florida". I'm from VA and used to surfing water temps that dip into the low 40's. Told them they're shams, pathetic excuses of surf shop employees, check Cleanline Surf Shop in Seaside, Oregon or WRV or the Surf-Station in St. Augustine, FL to see how a shop is run the right way (friendly, knowledgeable service, new wetsuits, nice board selection) read more

The boys were very sweet. They were very helpful to first time surfers. Nice set up. They don't hold your credit card which is nice. I need my credit card to shop while my kids surf. Made the surfing day an enjoyable experience. Also my daughter lost her phone and they were kind enough to search the grounds with us. Also they let us keep the board until 5pm instead of 430 on a Sunday since we had such a late start. read more

Really bad experience. The staff is not friendly: no specific advice according to your level, some of the staff don't know that much about that sport (one gave me a 7.0 board as 7.8). And the quality of their gears is pretty low. read more
