Instead of feeling supported, I often felt as though getting assistance or scheduling an appointment was an inconvenience to her. A medical practice should be welcoming and helpful from the very first point of contact, and that has not been my experience. It is frustrating and painful to deal with this woman. I asked him (a GI) if there was any connection with the brain and the gut and he immediately answered no despite hundreds of research studies that points to the fact there is a connection. He never mentioned that there was a possibility of cancer until I came out of my colonoscopy and asked him how it went and he said 'Well you have cancer." No bedside manner exists, personality is non-existent, and generally seems like a miserable person. If you hate your job that much, why do you keep showing up and taking the lives of your patients into your depressive hands. UCSF should revoke his degree.

In addition, her staff is friendly and engaging. For my first visit, I was having some alarming symptoms. Her staff made me feel heard and got me in on a cancellation. I had an office visit with Dr. Nene, we discussed my symptoms, she put me at ease but said she would like to get a better look at things. She ordered a colonoscopy and labs. Before I left she made sure I understood what she was concerned about, her medical assistant informed me in writing what the procedures and tests were called and answered all my questions. My procedure went smoothly and she was happy with what she saw given my symptoms. She told me she would follow up once all my lab results were back. She did just that, about a week later she emailed me all my results and told me next steps. For once I have a doctor that is on top of my health instead of me always running after them for answers. I've seen Dr. Nene 3 times since that appointment and each time she made me feel like we were working towards the same goal. She explained pros and cons of each treatment route for my condition and let me decide which route I preferred to try first. She's talented and a respected doctor all around!

Dr. Kao and his staff were not only professional but also incredibly warm, caring, and empathetic. He's a doctor who really knows how to get to the bottom of things (no, that won't be the last pun...unfortunately). I was initially nervous about having my procedure done without anesthesia, but the team immediately put me at ease. They explained everything thoroughly and made sure I felt calm and relaxed throughout the process. To my surprise, the procedure wasn't bad at all! Seriously, on a pain scale (1-10) it never got more than a 2--and that was only for about a second. I know pain tolerance is subjective, but I had NO pain during this procedure (Pain is in the brain!). Dr. Kao and his team's calming presence and genuine concern for my comfort made all the difference. I feel bad because I forgot the name of the lovely lady who was talking in my ear and calming me, literally the entire time, while Dr. Kao was....getting to know me. The whole team kept me calm and even made me laugh during the procedure--Who knew a colonoscopy could be this much fun?! Dr. Kao and his team are not just skilled, they're also incredibly compassionate. He and his team never made me feel like just another patient; they treated me like a person and I genuinely felt cared for. So, if you're looking for a gastroenterologist who will handle your care with dignity, professionalism, and maybe even a little humor, I can't recommend Dr. Kao enough.
