I took my dog to this groomer for some basic service. Overall, I do not recommend. She did come out nice and clean, but the trim job was not well done. I can easily see the marks where the razor was applied. It was not all smoothed out and blended. insofar as service goes, I have seen multiple reviews saying that she was rude. I do not think that she was rude, instead, it seemed to me, like she was treating me, as though I was a person that randomly met her rather than a client. There is a certain kind of professional courtesy that we expect from businesses, she did not seem to display that courtesy. Overall, I would not suggest taking a dog there that needs a sharp cut. A good cleaning - definitely. But, I will not return again. I can get a better cut for the same, or lesser, price. read more

I took my blind little shih tzu here almost 5 years ago. He is the sweetest calmest little creature who can get scared in new environments, but nothing that a good groomer can't soothe with a soft touch and calm voice...I still can't forget how horrible this experience was--it was the worst haircut of his life! I'm sure Steffie mishandled him every step of the way from the red marks left on his skin. I STILL can't forget how awful of an experience it was now that I am looking for a new groomer after giving my dog to my mom to care for a few years. The horror so much so compelled me to write a review after all these years. If I could leave 0 stars, I would. Everything that the negative reviews say are true from her rude nippy dogs to the unprofessionalism to the dark disgusting basement space. I highly doubt this woman has any actual training in dog grooming. Please heed the advice of other reviews and do not leave your dog here alone!!! Lastly, the way the business owner bullies people online who leave negative reviews is perhaps even more disturbing than the bad grooming... I am not sure. The audacity to ban "bully breeds" while being a bully herself is actually shocking. I'm sure I will be harassed on here too lol. This is such a wonderful experience. Her grooming salon is in the basement of her home and it's a very tender and precious experience. She genuinely loves the animals and is patient with them. I have an almost 14-year-old rat terrier who hates getting his toenails dremmeled or cut. She is always so gentle with him and friendly and makes him feel safe. I would highly recommend bringing your pups here, as you will feel like you just are in the home of a friend Who cares about your pet and wants to make sure you leave feeling good about the experience. I used to bring my Lhasa to Steffie for 4 years prior to moving to California. She always did a decent job, although I had to correct her on multiple occasions because she hadn't trimmed his face how I'd asked. Then, on a recent extended visit to Portland with my dog, I had left him with my brother while I was away visiting other family in Illinois. He called to tell me that my dog had gotten into something and needed a bath. He was due for a haircut too, so I setup an appointment with Steffie and had my brother bring him in. A week later, I get back to Portland to find my dog looking beyond ridiculous. Steffie basically just gave him a bath, trimmed his paws and his face super short, and left the rest of him as-is. When I let her know I was disappointed in his cut, this was her response: "Well, I guess that's what you get when you don't bring your own dog in and let me know what you want. Fine. Goodbye." I mean, WOW... She should have a record of how I've asked to have him groomed in the past, and if there was any doubt, referred to that. She claims that my brother asked to keep his hair long and fluffy. He said he told her to "probably do an overall trim? But that he really didn't know how I wanted it and that she should ask me." Or something to that affect.. Instead of following up with me, she just didn't cut his hair at all except for his face and paws (she lightly grazed over his belly too, but barely). So now he looks like he's wearing a hammer-pants balloon suit... Instead of fixing the botched job she just gave me a bunch of lip. This woman has no concept of what it means to provide customer service. Which is probably why the friends that I've referred to her in the past have chosen to use other groomers. I'm sorry...I was not impressed. I scheduled for my Pomeranian and my Pomapoo for grooming, first time using an in-home local business. She said it would cost $85 for both dogs, and she texted me to come back and when I got there, she only did one dog and said my other dog is still warming up to her. She wanted to charge $55 for my Pom's grooming. We settled for $50. I didn't like being charged more for just one dog and wasted time not getting my other dog groomed too. Additionally, she said my Pom has an ear infection on the right ear and said it didn't look normal. I was unaware of the problem, but concerned, so I took my dog to the vet directly after for an exam ($38). The vet didn't see any problems, and scoped his ears to find nothing in the right and the left ear was dirty with a little bit of ear wax. Thank goodness my dog is ok, but that was unnecessary and costed me more expenses. 2 stars is generous, she did a good job on the grooming but the experience sucked. Update: After my honest review, the groomer texted me begging me to remove my "bad" review on her. When I told her that customers need to know my experience, and I won't remove this post, she insulted both my dog for bad behavior, and myself for a bad attitude. My dogs are smart and sweet but if they didn't like the groomer, I should have listened to my dogs. I will never come back and I'm offended by her actions. read more

Its the dead of Winter, and my dog was starting to smell like a bag of fritos. Being car-less, taking her to a groomer is tricky in the muddy rain. Luckily Steffie is just two blocks away from my house! I wish I knew she was around sooner! So I took Aggie, my 30 pound Corgi, over to Steffie's House. I returned an hour and a half later, and it was like picking up a new dog! She's so clean and smells so good! Steffie is super thorough in her practice. Ags was "ferminated," got a good scrub down (hard to get through all that fur), got a belly and paw pad trim, nail trim, and tons more. And this was all for 24 bucks! Another great thing about Steffie is that it's clear she loves dogs. You know your dog isn't just another dog of the day. She gets to know them and makes them feel at home. So you know youre dog is in good hands when you leave her to get groomed. I'll definitely be returning. read more

Where I take my Shih Tzu to get groomed is very important. Not only must the environment be friendly & comfortable, but she must not be enclosed in a cramped cage as she waits for five other dogs ahead of her to get their turn. Steffie's House offers both attributes in a very cozy, homey way. Upon walking up, Sofie (my dog) & I were greeted warmly by Steffie & her three pooches. By the way she cooed & loved all over Sofie, I quickly got the impression that she is not only a devoted dog-mama, but an animal lover. I breathed a sigh of relief as she let Sofie get acquainted with her dogs, giving her as much time as she needed. (Sofie is very anti-social & wary of other animals.) Steffie's House is exactly what it says it is: a house. She works by herself out of the basement of her home, & when we walked down into it we saw a small, intimate working place with a caged-off area designated for doggies to relax & play. There were toys, fluffy pillows, & blankets strew all over the place, with only the faintest scent of wet dog (no grooming place is complete without it!). I breathed another sigh of relief as I watched Sofie sniff around excitedly. She seemed right at home. About an hour & a half later, Steffie called us to let us know that Sofie was ready to be picked up. She looked amazing! Nails clipped, fleas removed, perfectly groomed, just the way I wanted. And she didn't run up to me with her tail between her legs. Sofie looked like she felt very safe with Steffie & even made some new friends. I was so pleased! One of the biggest reasons I will come back to Steffie, aside from wanting to support small, local businesses, is the reasonable price. Where I used to take Sofie to get groomed, I was paying close to $100 for the works -- including a flea treatment & a tip. But with Steffie, my bill was $40! I tipped her generously for her time & passion. So 5-stars for quality, friendliness, comfort, & outstanding prices. I will absolutely come back to Steffie for as long as I have fur-babies. Note: Steffie's House is probably not best for people (& dogs) who are posh, bourgeois, &/or persnickety. They will likely feel put off by the "unprofessional" feel & the cozy-chaos of Steffie's House. But for me & Sofie, it was refreshing & suited us perfectly! I've been taking my 11 year old papillion/chihuahua mix to Steffie for a couple years and have had only wonderful experiences with Steffie and her care for my dog. I'll agree with another yelp reviewer in that this place is not for the prissy (both dogs and their owners). From what I can tell from the less than 5 star reviews, there seems to have been a misalignment in expectations. There is nothing fancy about Steffie's home and services, outside of her attention to detail with grooming (which is all the razzmatazz I need). Steffie is an incredibly caring and attentive person - she's clearly an animal lover and has all of the warmth (and perhaps the delightful quirks) that you would hope for in someone who really understands animals. With that, her 'bedside manner' is not that of a typical business woman per se, but she's very reasonable in her pricing and will love on your animal like it's her own. Also, it's incredibly convenient for me to shoot Steffie a quick text to check for week-of availability for grooming. I happened to be working from home yesterday, sent her a text late morning, and got my dog in for a full grooming session by the afternoon. I'll continue to take my dog here until the day she dies, and hopefully, with the help of Steffie and her teeth cleaning, hair brushing, nail clipping, anal gland expressing, grooming magic, that won't be for many, many years. read more

I took my very matted & stinky Maltipoo to Steffie's on a Sunday afternoon as I was very desperate to get my pup groomed & looking/feeling back to normal. Though I did not have an appointment I called in with the hopes that there was an opening. Steffie was very polite and sweet over the phone and gladly accepted my last minute appointment. Steffie's House has a very homey environment. There's even a cute rooster (or at least I think it was a rooster) wandering around the yard. I know my pup is a piece of work, but Steffie was very patient with me and my dog and gave me advice on how to keep her coat looking fresh and maintained. It took about an hour and half to have my pup wash cleaned, nails trimmed, and coat trimmed. Steffie was very professional and easy going! Definitely recommend any dog lovers checking out her services. I myself won't hesitate to come back for another visit. read more

I would like to update my review of Steffie's House to inform readers that yet another dog escaped from her daycare/grooming facility today despite Steffie's previous assurances that she had adopted precautions to ensure that it wouldn't happen again. The dog ran past my house and towards a busy main road and park. We were not able to find the dog and do not know what happened to it. All I know is that when I walked towards Steffie's House to confirm that the dog came from her facility, she was whistling ineffectually but doing nothing else to actually search for it. When I told her it ran towards the park, she said, "I know but which direction?" I said I wasn't sure. She shrugged and said, "It's long gone now." My heart breaks for this dog's owners, for all other dogs who have been left at this irresponsible and borderline inhumane facility, and honestly for Steffie herself, who is clearly ill-equipped and unprepared for a job caring for vulnerable creatures. I believe she loves dogs, but simply loving dogs does not mean you have the capacity to care for them in a responsible and professional manner. I wish there was something I could do to shut down this business but unfortunately all I can do is take to Yelp and try my best to spread the word. My 15 month old goldendoodles hair has grown out over the winter and had started to matt. I told Steffie that he was matted and rambunctious. And while we were on the phone, she even offered me a discount for the first time. I said no, he needs the work and I'll pay your price. She suggested that I wear him out before the appointment, so I took him to the park and played fetch with him for 30 minutes prior. When I went to pick him up, she said that he wouldn't let her finish his ears and she was clearly frustrated. When I went to the table, there was heavy metal style music playing very loud. He was literally lunging for me. I hugged him and he was shivering and his heart racing. When she got anywhere near him, he went nuts. I unhooked him from the table and he couldn't get out of the room fast enough. If you knew how much he likes to play with other dogs- and there were other dogs there - you would know how unusual that is for him. Steffie did a fine job on his head and face, but literally shaved his entire body down to the skin. She said that it took her an extra 20 minutes and then asked for more than the agreed upon. I paid it and then she asked for a tip and I declined. I truly felt she was not prepared to deal with a puppy and my dog came away traumatized. If you have an older more docile short haired dog, she would probably be fine. I am still confused though on the choice of music, it would have made me anxious, too. read more

BEWARE -- my dog escaped while being groomed. Imagine your 15-pound dog running scared and collarless from a location near the busy Stark & Cesar Chavez intersection! While putting up "Lost" posters in the area, I met a man who told me that once when he dropped his dog off at Steffie's, another dog got out into the yard. That man was able to stop that dog. Steffie has a security problem. When she called to tell me my dog had run away, she said another customer left the door open and my dog must've got out through a hole in the fence! Then she said my rescue dog is a "runner". In the next breath, she acknowledged that I had informed her of this. Steffie needs to personally close the dutch door to the grooming area, the basement door, and latch the gate -- not rely on customers she can later blame. Her fence needs to be in good working order, or she should not accept dogs until it is. I had to lift up the gate to latch it. A second gate between the house and the yard can easily be installed to provide additional security. To Steffie's credit, she called me immediately and she had talked with neighbors to give me a general idea of which way my dog ran. When I picked up my dog's collar from her, she didn't want to be paid for the grooming and offered to reimburse me for my expenses. She put up a couple lost posters by the time I got to her house to leave her the photo posters that I made. Later, Steffie left me a message that she found and fixed the hole in the fence. Steffie also offers day care and boarding. I liked the homey feel of Steffie's place. Initially, she seemed like a warm and helpful person. It's too bad that she doesn't have good security or procedures in place. I had been looking forward to leaving my dog for day care and boarding there. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, my dog was found a mile away. The HomeAgain chip was read at the Oregon Humane Society and I got my mini-poodle back. I am grateful that my dog's injuries are limited to shock, bleeding paws and nails, and dehydration. It was a frightening experience that good procedures and security would obviate. read more

To Whom It Concerns: My statements may have been made in anger, but I do not appreciate this woman lying about what she did and I will shield my "kids" from anything or anyone who attempts to harm or does harm to them. I am someone who does not have children; my pets are my "kids'. So when this person claims she placed a muzzle on my dog, he went crazier than usual (her words), and harmed himself and then tells my attorney I brought him to her that way, I have enormous issues with the lies. (We received a copy of the letter she sent our attorney.) I also would have taken him to the vet had he been injured and not a groomer. As for her claim that she had legal advice, not true, she told us to get a lawyer and admitted she could not afford one. The letter received was from her, not an attorney. And I find it humerous that after all this time, she claims she had an attorney. As someone with a degree in Criminal Justice, I recognize this woman has issues when she can't keep a straight accounting of what happened in her care, along with everything else (she has made so many changes in each story she has told, it's probably hard for her to remember all the changes), blames others for "accidents" that occur in her presence, and chooses to perjure herself in this open forum. I know what she told me, I know what she told my attorney, I have seen on here how she blames her customer's and their pets for what happens when their pets are in her care, not to mention that if you read what she says, you get a really good sense that she really doesn't like pet parents, and I have seen her blame me, just as she did my dog. I do not care what she says about me because quite frankly, she has some serious issues. However, you harm or attack my "kids', I will have an issue with you and will deal with whoever that person is and what they have done. I have no need to follow the advice of someone who clearly has issues with the truth and might be a pathological liar. I have no intention of "mediating" this issue with her as she is not worth anymore of my valuable time. My intention was to inform people about this person and what happened to my precious dog in her care. If someone chooses to continue to take their grooming business to her, "let the buyer beware". There are enough complaints on here, along with her blame of the customer and their pet to speak for itself. Lastly, her claim that we did not pay her is another lie. I wrote her the check myself. It was only upon her denial that she did anything wrong and changed her story to a second one from what she told me when I picked my dog up the day of the incident, plus the fact that, when my husband called her from Banfield Pet Hospital and asked if she was going to help pay for the surgery our dog now needed to have his toenail removed, and her response was to be belligerent with him (I heard everything she said over his cell phone she was so loud.), that we decided to "cancel" the check written to her for her "grooming" services for that day. I was not going to pay someone who injured my pet and then pay the vet for something done in her care. Keep in mind; we had a good relationship with this person, just like all of those who have posted positive comments here on Yelp, until the day my dog's toenail was almost ripped off..... Can anyone really blame me for being upset? I have no intention of removing my valid complaints or responding to anymore comments this person makes to me, about me, or my baby. Wonderful service. I was here from out of town and was able to get a last-minute grooming booked without a problem. My old man mini-schnauzer Jim came out looking great, and seemed happy as a clam. Steffie also mentioned that she thought maybe we should get his thyroid checked as she thought he had signs of an underactive thyroid, and sure enough she was right! WELL wELL, I used this woman once, never again. Seeing all these bad reviews only makes me know I was not wrong. She is not PROFESSIONAL nor does she really care about your dog. BEWARE I used her 2 yrs ago and had a similar experience with my labradoodle. After forgetting my appointment she begrudgingly took me acted like she couldn't be bothered pretended to be nice and then left several messages for me to hurry and come back from shopping after she gave me a different time. I gave her the benefit of the doubt gave her a nice tip then went home to 4 messages rudely telling me to hurry up. THEN she had the nerve to keep calling me over a month later to come back! Steffie is great! My dog looked great and was super calm when I picked him up. He is normally nervous around other dogs and people, but when I got there to pick him up, he was hanging out with Steffie and a few other pups outside, seeming perfectly content. One star seems too generous but since I can't rate lower it will have to do. I took my two shih tzus in for first time cuts with the owner. First of all, there were pee soaked pee pads in the play pen area where she wanted to keep my dogs. There was also pee dried on the floor of the grooming area. She took my info but never asked what kind of cuts and when I asked if she wanted to know she got very snippy with me and acted as if it were a huge inconvenience that I would want them cut a specific length. My gut feeling was for me to take them home and when I said I wasn't comfortable leaving them there she called my dog a "brat"...not sure why she felt the need to call a dumb animal names but based on my short time there she isn't playing with a full deck of cards. I should have done my homework and read other reviews first and if I had I would have saved myself time. I would never want my babies to be returned with bloody nails. read more

As the owner of a rescued dog, I'm glad there are places like Steffie's to get my dog groomed. My dog suffers from separation anxiety, so grooming is pretty traumatizing for her. She did well at Steffie's though because she got to hang out with her dogs for an hour and a half instead of being stuck in a crate alone for 3-5 hours. Steffie used a medicated shampoo for my dog's severely dry skin (which I requested). She even got to take home a fancy feathered hair clip. Steffie's is a good place to take a dog who does not do well at a traditional groomers, or any dog you want taken good and loving care of. read more

I have been taking my Shih Tzu/Toy Poodle mix to Steffie for the last year or so. Steffie has always done a great job. I also know that my dog is extremely sensitive about getting her nails trimmed, and at least one other groomer has asked me not to bring her back because it's too difficult. I let Steffie know about this when we first met; however, she stated it was not a problem for her and always seems to do a good job on my dog's nails. In addition to this, I agree with other reviewers that part of my draw to go to Steffie's is the personal, homey atmosphere of her "salon." When we come, she has always made us feel welcome. She often has a number of other little dogs, all lounging on cushions in a gated area of her salon. She has given me good advice about caring for my dog as well and periodically has thrown in thoughtful extras, like diatomaceous earth (used to kill fleas), a holiday collar decoration, and so on. read more

Our miniature schnauzer always looks and smells great after a visit to Steffie and, best of all, he likes to go there! It's very homey and cozy, and there are no cages or crates. Steffie has been available to do both grooming and boarding on short notice, which is very convenient! She is quick to respond to text messages and easy to schedule with. Our dog is a small poodle/terrier mix. She is very kind to our dog and talks to him as she is grooming him to keep him calm. Steffie has been listening to music while she works when I've gone there, which did not bother our dog at all but is worth knowing and you would want to mention it to her if your dog is upset by loud music. She loves dogs and it shows - she talks to them a lot and when boarding dogs will take care of them like they are her own. Steffie knows how to care for dogs in such a way that her home has become his home away from home. I have brought my 8 year old Aussie to Steffie two times now and both times she has done a great job. Reading the reviews below don't phase me a bit. I think the person who says they have criminal justice experience is a person who is asking for trouble before they even drop their dog off. Is there a reason they didn't take their dog somewhere else? Is there a reason they thought, after being "friends" of the groomer , that they all of the sudden think she would lie to them and hurt their "kid". Come on. If you come up upon someones place and you don't think its secure enough, walk away... I would too muzzle your dog if it couldn't sit still. A dog is supposed to be muzzled. A kid is not. Completely wrong for even posting that. I have seen dogs hurt themselves when they are caged, when they are behind a fence in a backyard, and even in a room with a door that is closed. My dog tore up a door and bled after trying to scratch her way out of the basement when we left her for the day so it would be cooler during the hot weather. Bottom line, don't think for one second your dog couldn't have caused itself harm when feeling threatened. My dog is my baby, she knows she is getting cut and she whines. It's new surroundings. A dog park has the same things. Two dogs come in and fight and one gets the worst, but you can't blame the other dog for making your dog bleed, its life. A muzzle was put on for the safety of both the groomer and the dog. I could easily see the dog cutting itself because it wanted to get the muzzle off. Steffies house could be better, sure, but so could Petco, or any other groomers place. I appreciate someone who will cut my dog's hair and smile when its done, whether she messes up or not; whether the dog hurts itself or not. I was very hopeful after reading the reviews for Steffies House Dog Wash and Groom, but disappointed would be a major understatement. I called to make an appointment and it was DAYS before I got a call back. When I finally did hear back Steffie seemed too busy to be bothered. I was very forthright about my dogs anxiety about getting her nails trimmed (she is squirmy and nervous but has never been aggressive to a soul) but Steffie seemed uninterested in talking about her practices or how she chooses to deal with anxious dogs. Upon arriving for our appointment I found Steffie to be disinterested and off-putting. She began by saying terrible things about another dog who was there and informed me that she had called the dogs owners and refused to work with their dog again because of its anxiety. She asked if my dog had ever had her nails done using a dremmel tool and despite the fact that I said that she had not and would most likely not like it (she hates noises of that sort) she began using the tool on her back nails. She stopped after about a minute or so to address the owner of the dog she had already said such nasty things about when they arrived to pick up their dog. They were very apologetic about any problems their dog had caused and again her response was completely rude! During this time she had left my very small dog, who she had only met for a total of five minutes, hooked up to the grooming table unable to move. While I have no doubt that this is common practice, and I am not claiming that my dog was in an unsafe situation, being left in that situation without anyone attending to her only exacerbated her anxiety. She then worked with my dog for three more minutes or so before telling me that my dog was too anxious and she didn't need the trouble. I watched the entire encounter and my dog didn't scream, bark, or bite...she just squirmed around a little bit. She then told me that I needed to get her nails done at the vet so she could be sedated. My dog is five years old and I have never been told that her anxiety is such that sedation is a necessary (or even good) option. I took her to another groomer the following day and her nails were done flawlessly without issue. If you have the type of dog who stands perfectly still to be washed, trimmed, and clipped without so much as a batted eye perhaps Steffie will give decent service...but if you have a normal dog who is perfectly fine but just isn't too fond of these types of endeavors---look elsewhere! read more
