I was in Toronto to meet a friend, do some shopping, and enjoy some food and wine. We decided on Stelvio as we wanted to try something new and we were intrigued by the art. Besides how could you go wrong with cuisine of Northern Italy, lots of cheese and pasta. ​ It was around 5:00 p.m. when we went entered and it was empty. Once inside, the waitress was most helpful in explaining their signature dishes and how the ingredients cannot be purchased here and are brought over directly from Northern Italy. I don't remember the specific names of all of the dishes but I won't forget the meal. We started by sharing the cheese crepes with a glass of red wine. The crepes melted in my mouth and the wine was an excellent compliment to our meal. Next we enjoyed a couple of their signature dishes, the homemade buckwheat pasta/cheese/potato dish and the seasoned meat with bacon wrapped around a large wooden skewer. It was one of the most tender and flavourful meats I have eaten. We were also introduced to Polenta sticks. These I remember as they are as addictive as French fries. We ended the meal with apple cake, best described as mmmmm. The servings were a reasonable size instead of being served to much food then paying for what is left on my plate. My friend and I were quite satisfied with our unique dining experience and I can't wait to return for some more Polenta sticks and to try more of their signature dishes. By the time we left, the restaurant was quite busy, and I overheard the conversation beside me with the grandfather telling his grandson that this was the food that he knew from when he lived in Northern Italy. If that is not a testament to the authenticity of their menu, I'm not sure what is. I will probably never travel to Northern Italy so I am thankful that Stelvio has brought the experience to us. read more

Nestled at the beginning of the legendary Queen St. West sits Stelvio. The interior is well planned and comfortable with excellent tattoo style art on the walls. The simplistic beauty of the décor allows the food to really shine. I have been to Stelvio twice now and both times the restaurant buzzed with excited energy and was comfortably full with seemingly satisfied patrons. As for the menu my hands down favorite is the Zigeuner, which is a seasoned beef rolled onto a wooden skewer. It is amazing and I plan on ordering it every time I visit. I can admit that I am not an adventurous eater. I do not stray far away from meat and potatoes but Stelvio is the kind of place where I plan on trying everything on the menu. The words gluten free usually have me looking for alternativer choices but the Taglaitelle is some of the best I have ever had. Gluten or not. If you're a chesse fan, you will love it here. Toronto has needed a place like Stelvio for a while. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable and the food is made with care. Though I would love to be selfish and keep Stelvio all to myself, the work of Chef Masi and the whole team is too good to stay hidden for long. Although I typically refrain from voicing complaints publicly, my recent experience at Stelvio compelled me to download Yelp and share the following review. Our intention was to enjoy a delightful family outing, filled with joy and exquisite cuisine. Unfortunately, Stelvio left us both hungry and disappointed. My family visited Canada and after a long evening of supporting independent second-hand businesses, we sought a satisfying meal to conclude our day. Famished, we entered Stelvio with high hopes. Upon being seated, our waitress described the cuisine as "a bit of Italy and a taste of the mountains." Regrettably, our meal did evoke the mountains--hard and cold. It seemed as if the food had been prepared a month prior and merely reheated daily until it reached our table. Much of it was described as "al dente," which at Stelvio apparently means undercooked, while the remainder was either cold or nearly frozen. The one highlight was the fried cheese appetizer, which met our expectations. However, the rest of the meal was a significant letdown. I strongly urge Stelvio to reassess and refine their culinary skills to avoid disappointing other families, who, like us, should not have to resort to Popeyes Louisiana fried chicken after a costly yet unsatisfactory meal. read more

Not only is Stelvio Toronto's newest Italian hot spot to hit up on Queen West, they also cater to the celiac crowd. Over fifty percentage of the menu items are gluten-free. Specializing in Northern Italian cuisine and fine wine, they take great care in importing 80% of their menu directly from Italy, in order to provide an authentic traditional Northern Italian dining experience. You must try their house specialty dish - Pizzoccheri di Teglio! The Pizzoccheri is handmade buckwheat organic short pasta with Valtellina Casera DOP cheese, cabbage, potatoes, butter, garlic, and fresh sage. It is a creamy savory dish. I also highly recommend the Tagliatella ai Funghi Porcini, if you like mushrooms this is your go to dish. The porcini mushroom are hand selected in the Italian mountains and are quite the delicacy. The place is clean and the service is great. As well, Stelvio offers an excellent selection of salads and Panini for lunch. They provide an atmosphere that will make you feel like you've taken a trip to the Italian Alps. read more

This place is pretty great, with excellent food. We had the salad with polenta fries, the buckwheat fritters (Sciatt), the pizzoccherri and the brasato with polenta. All of the dishes were great, well made and serious. This isn't a trendy Toronto place, so that may be the issue people have. I noted some other posters found it differed from the Italian food they're used to. Well, obviously, Italian food is diverse so this is regional food, and not a kind I've ever eaten in Canada before. It is heavier than other Italian places in the city, but on the other hand the food is very hearty and will be great after a long winter's day. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who finds the Toronto food scene a bit repetitive and fickle and is looking for a place where the owners are dedicated to their craft and make high quality food without regard to trends. read more

I've been wanting to write a review for this restaurant for some time because I keep thinking about the amazing experience I had the first time I went to celebrate a friends birthday. The staff there truly provided one of the best customer experiences I've had in Toronto. Before I got to the restaurant I had fallen and injured myself meanwhile also dropping my friends birthday cake (I know not the best start to the night :( ). The staff realizing what had happened provided first aide care, a cake replacement, and genuine comfort/encouragement. It was so unexpected and sweet of them to take the time to do all that for me in a busy restaurant. The food selection was also very unique and delicious! I highly recommend going to this restaurant because you can be rest assured to enjoy a fantastic meal and be treated great! read more

Having spent some time in Como and the mountain lakes region north of Milan, I was thrilled to discover that authentic Italian alps cuisine can be found in Toronto. The Milan-style veal cutlet was prepared to perfection and the first bite of pizzoccheri (nothing to do with pizza!) immediately brought back memories of hikes in the southern Alps. For those already familiar with staples of northern Italian cuisine like polenta, there are some interesting novelties like polenta fries. I also tried a bite of the polenta burger and would come back again just for that! The service was excellent and above and beyond what could be expected for a restaurant at this price point. All in all, a hidden gem and highly recommended to anyone looking for a unique dining experience in Toronto. read more

This place is truly unnconventional. It's not the typical Italian restaurant you might find in Downtown TO, the dishes might need a little bit of explanation if you're not familiar with the Northern Italian cuisine, but definitely delivers. Starting from the deep fried cheese balls called Sciatt, moving on to the Polenta Sticks and the cheese and meat boards, getting to the main courses.. It's so hard to choose what to eat when everything looks so tasty! My recommendations go to the Risotto al Bitto e Vino Rosso, especially when there's someone to share it with. You won't regret having just one main course to share, instead of maybe choosing two different pasta dishes and trying both of them. AMAZING FOOD/GREAT SERVICE/AFFORDABLE/IMPRESSED! Stopped in to Stelvio this evening, super impressed. The atmosphere is clean and visually pleasing. The menu was extensive (without being TOO much), varied and comprehensive. And the drink list was well put together. The service was very timely and our server (Eduardo) was very pleasant and very knowledgeable. We had: Bresoala (perfectly salted) Gnocchi Pomodoro (the sauce could not have been better done and the Gnocchi was the perfect consistency) Polenta/salsiccia/funghi (yes yes yes) Polenta cake and the Chocolate crepes for dessert and both were to die for. We actually considered ordering a third dessert. So happy, so full. 10/10 will go back & may make it a weekly stop! read more

Had a great experience at Stelvio and was very impressed with the establishment overall - especially considering it was still their first week being open! The service was great and very informative, she welcomer all my questions about the menu! I ended up trying the manfrigole to start followed by the Tagliatelle ai fungi porcini and the tagliere misto accompanied by a great glass of red wine. I was not familiar with northern Italian cuisine and am a very picky eater but I LOVED it! All the flavours were full and complemented each other very nicely. I rarely eat at Italian restaurants when I travel, but this may be one of the most authentic Italian food experiences I've ever had outside of Italy. Everything is imported from Italy (and you can tell!) I started with the taroz which I found absolutely delicious. Then my boyfriend ordered the pizzoccheri while I had the risotto all'ossobuco: we had to share them because we couldn't decide which one was the best. So tasty, and you can really tell that they care about the quality of the products they serve. To top it all, great Italian red wine and an excellent service. Big fan! I don't agree AT ALL with Chris Nuttall-Smith's review in the G&M. The food was great: sciatt, zigeuner beef (great seasoning, and a presentation that my 14 y/o daughter loved), and a freshmade pasta and mushroom dish that was absolutely wonderful. The house/family made wines were lovely, I preferred the Nebbiolo/Merlot to the Nebbiolo/Syrah: both were lighter, fruity and easy drinking. The ambiance was interesting Euro-style café that begs for warm weather. And Laura, our server, was professional, friendly, and intimately familiar with the menu and the wine list. A+ for her familiarity with the wine list. I hope this place does really well! read more

If you're a pasta lover, Stelvio Toronto is an absolute must-visit! Our dinner for 6 was a journey of flavors, with the pasta as the undeniable highlight. Every dish was cooked to perfection--al dente, with the ideal amount of bite. We really loved the Raviolis and the risottos that we had. We also share some appetizers and dessert and we liked every single bite. The pasta maintained its texture and delightful chewiness, combined with impeccable service and a cozy ambiance, our experience was unforgettable. We were on QueenStW, and we decided to try this little gem, and we weren't disappointed. Our waiter was wonderful, and explained all the dishes. We tried Sciatt delicious lightly fried cheese balls. Can't even begin to describe how great they were. So make sure you start your meal with them. Please, please ask for the Pizzocheri and ziguener which are amazing!!! The melted polenta is another unbelievable treat. We finished the meal with buckwheat crepes -- another delicious treat. The entire concept of the restaurant is very cool. Fantastic food and a charming Italian feel. It took me back to my days in Italy when waiters took the time to talk and explain the food -- with pride and joy. We totally understood what we were ordering and what to expect. The food itself was hearty with loads of fresh Italian cheese. We had 3 dishes between the 2 of us and were STUFFED. In the future we will omit a 3rd dish and have a salad. The wine was very nice and not common for Toronto. A must try for lovers of REAL Italian food read more

I recently dined at Stelvio in Toronto and was thoroughly impressed. The risotto ossobuco was a standout, featuring perfectly cooked, creamy risotto with tender, flavorful veal that melted in my mouth.
