After much wrangling with American Home Shield (avoid, avoid, avoid), we managed to get assigned to Stepan's, the only AHS contractors offered who had above a 2-star rating on Yelp. I called my ahs Co about my furnace, they dispatched stepans a/c, it all started in January and today I called the insurance Co. To get further information of the next step in their process just to find out that stepans told them that there is no mechanical issues with our unit and they closed the case. So I'm screwed., it's freezing in the valley, my pilot in the furnace get shut after a short work ánd I can't turn it back. Mean while my gas bills where outrageous January 900.00 February 540.00 March 530.00 and April I turned the unit totaly off and the bill was 192.00 so there is a problem , thank you stepans you screwed me. I gave 2 stars because they did came over afew times and left claiming my unit is very dirty but when I told them please go ahead and clean it so you can't claim that as an accuse they didn't show up. Claiming insurance Co. Did recommend them not to do it. But I was paying out of my pocket.. avoid this Co. I'm so upset because they screwed us up. read more

I was prepared to HATE this guy! The AC stopped working in a recently purchased house so the ol' "home warranty" kicks in. If you are familiar with "home warranties" you know they are an exercise in frustration (and that's why none of them get over two yelp stars)(they suck!!)... but you get one when you buy a house so you at least have to TRY to deal with these people whose main goal is to deny your claim. (Kind of like regular insurance but these people are really fuckers.) Anyway, it's the insurance company that sent Stepan out so I was pretty sure he would make things as difficult as possible... and he didn't. He quickly determined why BOTH AC units had stopped working, switched out two parts, didn't fuss over the fact that the insurance company did not know that it was a problem with TWO units. Miracles do happen! I just want to thank Eric and Stepan for getting us up and running within 24 hours! My air unit went out Thurs. night. I contacted my home warranty (not expecting much, but hopeful.) Fri. morning I got a call that the service person would be at our house between 9-12:00. 10:00 am Eric arrived, checked my unit, the fan motor had burned out. They had to order one. Very lucky for is they had a cancellation and would be able to come today. A really nice man showed up right on time and fixed the problem with no problem. Stepan is a true skilled, honest professional. My A/C, of course, had to to break down on the hottest week of the summer, I called Stepan and he diagnosed my HVAC. He showed everything that needed to be cleaned/fix regarding my evaporator coil and condernser coil, but he insisted that I call other technicians first to compare with the quote he gave me. I really appreciated that. Since he showed me everything wrong with the unit, I ended up youtubing it and fixing it myself with a BIG help of a friend - it wasn't easy, took about 3 hours and the A/C is working like a charm again. The bottom line, Stepan was not there to just take your money and do half-ass jobs like others out there. He wanted me to do my due diligence before I commit to the quote/service that needed to be done. Our A/C was no longer blowing out cold air, so we contacted our home warranty company, AHS and we were assigned Stepan's AC & Heating. Eric was our service provider, and he did a great job. He figured out the issue and knew just what to do to repair it. He also explained that I didn't need the heavy duty filter I have been using, but just needed a simple one, since we don't have allergies. Eric was courteous and was very conscious regarding social distancing and wore gloves and a mask, which I really appreciated. My AC doesn't blow cold air and it shuts off randomly after a couple hours of being on. I had an electrician come out and he told me there was nothing wrong with the circuit breaker or any other electrical issue. Then I had an AC technician came out to my house two different times to try and diagnose the issue and said he was unable to find any issue. And instead of trying to actually find the problem, He just waved it off and refuses to solve the problem. read more

We also have a home warranty and our air conditioner was blowing hot air last week while it was over 100. I filed a claim and they assigned someone with one star. I phoned them the next day and never got a return call. I called again Sunday am and was told someone would call within 4-8 hours. Of course, I didn't get a call. The next day I phoned our warranty company and they reassigned it to Stepan's A/C and Heating Services. I saw they were a five star company. Stepan arrived on time and repaired the unit. He left an invoice with exactly what he did. I chose to have my regular service come four days later to check everything out and was told the Freon was low. I was also told the vents were collapsing and that I needed a new unit. Because Stepan had added Freon, I phoned him this am and he came out a few hours later. He measured the level of Freon. It was fine. He stated there is nothing wrong with the HVAC unit. I can't believe how there are so many scammers that will take someone's hard earned money just to make a buck. I will continue to use Stepan for all of our HVAC needs. Thank you for your honesty! We were so impressed by how responsive, knowledgeable, and thorough they were, that we ended up requesting them again through our home warranty company when our AC stopped working just a couple of days ago. They contacted us right away and worked with our schedule. They quickly diagnosed the problem and returned the following day with a new motor. They went above and beyond by cleaning up our old and messy wiring, fixing a small leak, and making sure that we have the proper amount of freon in the system. Excellent service! Update to previous review: Well, Stepan has outdone himself yet again. Two weeks ago, my wife and I noticed the AC was sending us an FU, due to less-than-chilly output during this record-breaking hot summer. Not content to just sweat it out, I called the reliable Stepan a week ago on 9/14, with a service call appointment set for the following day. Upon arriving, Stepan listened to my description of events, and immediately went to check the unit, learning that his initial supposition was correct: a dying condenser motor. Now, this is where things get interesting, and pleasing: Stepan, having remembered me from our two previous interactions, offered two options: 1) I could wait a couple of days for delivery of a motor he'd already ordered (just to keep his stock filled; to the best of my knowledge, he's not psychic), or, I could have him buy one immediately, and pay a higher price because he would've had to pay a higher price. I was blown away at Stepan's honesty and forthrightness. How often does one not only hear the truth from a contractor, but also have one try to save you money? In my experience, it happens about as often as Republican politicians tell the truth, which is to say... damn-near never. On top of that, Stepan even offered to waive the service call fee until the job was complete which, again, amazed me. Then, three days later, Stepan himself called me up, said he had the new motor and would be by in a couple hours. Couple hours later, he showed up, took care of business, and left my wife and me in cool comfort, for the exact price he'd quoted me three days earlier. In short, as I've written before, we consumers must support honest, skilled, hard-working small businesses, because they are truly the backbone of this country's economy. And when one encounters a person/company that is as stand-up as Stepan and the people at his company, it is incumbent on us to patronize them, because they not only deserve it, but we do, too. We had been without ac for two (hot) weeks and dealing with another company per our home warranty . Exasperated and practically in tears I called Stepan's and spoke to Anna. Repaired A.C., actually had to come back as issue recurrent. Seems issue was electrical which wasnt covered as wasn t issue with A.C., but some socket/electrical issue. Amazing,the building i live in has a company that they use in house, they do a yearly service and they did this a few weeks ago, my system was not blowing cold air, and they told me that they needed a longer inspection and then told me they were not sure what was wrong but it might cost between 2 and 3 thousand to fix and the compressor had a fault, this was more than a little suspicious so i called a friend and he gave me Stephans contact information.Spephan came out a day later, fixed the problem in 15 mins and charged just over 200 bucks including the call out charge,AMAZING,and totally honest compared to the other company i spoke with.Stephan is a throwback to the old school days when everybody was not out to scam you like most companies are today, if you are looking for an AC company ten Stephan is the only one i would refer in a heartbeat. read more

Previously, I had First American Home Shield as my home warranty carrier. When I experienced a problem with my AC unit, I placed a request and they sent me a few contractors because they could not diagnose or fix the problem. I received nothing but a run around and I was left without AC for 6 weeks during a heat wave in 2018 because they kept misdiagnosing. The company was extremely unprofessional and unsupportive so I switched to American Home Shield hoping to get better service. Recently, I noticed a leak in my AC/HVAC system and placed a request. I was referred to Stepan by a neighbor on the Nextdoor App, who used Stepan through a home warranty company and highly recommended him. Stepan's is a small family owned business. Since I have no warranty, I hired hired Stepan myself to do the basic annual service on both of my split system units. I was immediately impressed by his extensive knowledge, expertise, honesty, work ethic, and fair & super reasonable pricing. Since we have old HVAC furnaces and condensors, I know that their days are numbered. After the standard annual cleaning, I then hired Stepan to do a deep cleaning and servicing of the furnace & condenser split system, but he never pushed me to do anything. Just trying to avoid having to replace everything since its so expensive. ($10k - 13K range for only 1 split system & we have 2!) After doing the big maintenance service & deep cleaning, a few weeks later the motor blower on the old furnace died. Most HVAC companies would say buy a new furnace and/or a complete new system, but not Stepan. Unfortunately, since our Carrier furnace is 30 years old, manufacturers parts are no longer available. But fortunately, there are after market parts available making repairs possible. We could of easily replaced the furnace, but every HVAC company I have ever spoken with recommends replacing all the equipment including ducts at same time. And since we were in the middle of another heat wave it made the most sense to repair which could be done the same day vs. having to wait several days to get a new furnace and to have it installed. Going forward, I am going to get my next complete HVAC system from Stepan, as he is the most knowledgeable, honest, reasonable, HVAC guy I know. Also, learned so much from Stepan. He was letting me know that a lot of customers even have issues with the newer HVAC systems in 5 - 10 years, so sometimes you are better off fixing the older ones. He was sent via our home warranty company to fix our old A/C unit and arrived on time, provided quick but thorough work and also took the time to explain every step and issue of the service. Fast forward a couple weeks later and our A/C unit started to act up again. We called Stepan and just a couple days later he was back on our roof checking out the issue. My heating furnace completely stopped and I had no heat in my home. I was so very fortunate to be referred to Stepan's company. They arranged an appointment very quickly and kept me informed while they were on the way to my house. Stepan's was the absolute best service men I have ever had. Non-stop, no breaks the furnace was inspected, the problem found, a new part had to be obtained and he left for a very short time, returned with the part and didn't stop until it was installed and then checked that it was working correctly. Having said that, we received the same excellent service and wanted to add our 5 stars. We learned of Stepan's from our home warranty company. They were responsive in reaching out and arranging an appointment the next day. I asked if they were to get a cancellation, I would be home all day and happy to take any time. They called later the same day and Stepan himself came by and had the necessary parts to fix the AC in 30 minutes! He was very courteous and professional. One of the best Contractors I got from AHS. Top notch from top to bottom. Scheduler was polite, responsive and knowledgeable and owner and repair personnel were professional, courteous, extremely knowledgeable and thorough and on time. HVAC was down and a few days ago Stepan came out to inspect and repair. He took apart condenser system and checked every part to make sure he did a complete diagnosis. Turns out system needed a new condenser which Stepan ordered immediately given the current heat wave. Today, ON A SUNDAY he and another technician came to install the new condenser, clean and flush out the lines, re-fill refrigerant and test the system.
