I have followed Dr.Kelly when he was at another office one day a week in San Mateo 10 -15 years ago. He was the bright star at this stuffy practice. I then moved to Minnesota and back to San Bruno, for a temporary assignment. I recently went for an eye exam at his office and found his staff very helpful and competent. They gave me the 'down home' treatment, which is pretty awesome! While waiting for my eyes to dilate, I overheard many repeat customers talking to the receptionist as she recognized each person, adding nice and welcoming words. This business is closed. Tried to call today to change an appointment I have already, only to be told by a receptionist that the office belongs to another doctor now, and Dr. Kelly is in the process of retiring. If a practicing doctor is planning on retiring, no longer has a phone number to make/schedule:change appointments, wouldn't you think that his receptionist would notify all of his current patients that he is going out of practice? I really enjoyed working with him, but I am very disappointed in how this relationship has ended. Very unprofessional to ghost your patients like that. Wow! Dr. Kelly is amazing. He made me feel super comfortable and was incredibly knowledgeable and funny. I was nervous as I've only ever had one eye exam and have been having bad headaches. He diagnosed me with a new, mild astigmatism and didn't try to convince me to buy anything. Lisa at the front desk was also super knowledgeable and was not a sales person, thank god, she was a customer service professional to the max. She answered all my questions and was up front about what I truly "needed" and could benefit most from. There's a reason why this is the lowest rated store in the area and it has nothing to do with the OD. The male receptionist is a problem. I can only think of a few reasons and none of them good as to why he is still employed here. He really needs to find a new calling in life where he doesn't have to deal with people. They are also approachable and friendly - feel free to carry any small conversation, from restaurants, hobbies to family trips, with them! I was a customer here 2018~2021 (4 years). Dr. Kelly has been our family optometrist for years and we could not think of seeing anyone else for our eye care. He is funny, personable, and takes his time to examine and explain his findings. Evan is also very friendly, knowledgeable, and humorous. Did I mention that he is also efficient? Prior to our most recent visit, he had already checked our insurance and updated their records accordingly. With new coverage, I was expecting to show him our new medical insurance cards, but everything was already taken care of before our arrival. How can you beat service that is warm service from people who demonstrate genuine interest in their clients? Our annual visits are so enjoyable that they do not even feel like health check appointments. The office hasn't even opened yet but the receptionist called me. That was good. But why did he rush me while I was on the phone with him for less than a minute, trying to schedule the appointment. He said "We need to move since we have people coming in now." He needs to be more professional when answering the phone and most importantly, a receptionist needs to be more friendly with people. Dr Kelly is da best! Professional and friendly, he shows concern about his patients. I've seen him for almost ten years now. I can ask him questions about anything, he educated me on the data of risks and benefits of LASIK surgery when I was thinking of it and it helped me make a wiser decision. I went in last week and his office was following recommended Covid protocols, too. Dr Kelly is great about ordering contact lens trials, too, when I want to try a different brand. Also, Eben helps A LOT in educating me what glasses look good on my face, the durability of different styles and materials, how my visual field may change during certain tasks and why it's important to wear them in the same position each time (I didn't know my headaches were from letting them slip a little farther down the bridge of my nose, but after Eben tightened them, wow, those headaches went away!) read more

I visited early last year to get an eye exam. Gave them a call, and it was easy enough to schedule an appointment. The office is located in the corner of a decent shop complex, so there is a large parking lot. However, this area gets pretty crowded so you might have to circle around a bit. I saw Dr. Kelly once for my eye exam, and no complaints - a little quirky but very friendly! I've seen Eben, the one at the front desk, and he's amazing! He's super friendly, sassy in a fun way, and really takes his time to make sure you're getting all you need, and the best that you can get! I got two pairs of sunglasses from here, and both are fantastic. 5/5 would get more glasses here. read more

Dr. Kelly would have gotten a 5 star from me, but apparently my glasses were on back order for a couple weeks and no one thought to call me. It took 3 weeks to get them. But that's my only gripe. Here's the good stuff: -Nice, personalized treatment -He did not have to dilate my pupils for the whole day. In fact, whatever he put in my eyes cleared by the time the exam was over. I really liked Dr. Kelly! I came in a little while ago for my first routine eye exam since I got LASIK (that was almost 7 years ago). It took me a long time to decide to do it because after years of contact-lens-and-glasses-torment, I was enjoying the freedom from eye doctors and their sting-y and numb-y eye drops. The receptionist is awesome. She's so polite (and funny), and makes you feel welcome when you come in the door. And Dr. Kelly himself is a freaking riot. I've never actually had FUN at an eye doctor appointment before. This was before my husband and I moved to HMB by the way -- it came up in conversation, and Dr. Kelly took the time to write down a list of restaurants and stuff in HMB that he recommended. As much as I am loath to admit it, I am getting older....and despite my LASIK, I sometimes get a little fuzzy when looking at computer screens for a long time. So Dr. Kelly whipped me up a prescription for glasses (for the first time in my life, NORMAL glasses that aren't 4" thick, and can actually be cute). There was no upselling by him or the receptionist when I was choosing my frames (they have a great selection by the way) and it didn't take that long before I could come pick them up. I have been going to Dr. Kelly for many years now (exams for both contact lenses and eye glasses) and have always felt confident that I was getting a thorough eye exam. Although he has a sarcastic sense of humor, he is very nice. He is very knowledgeable and very aware of specific eye conditions that merit a referral to a specialist. As I am extremely near-sighted, Dr. Kelly has informed me that my eyes are more vulnerable to retinal detachment and has referred me to other doctors for consultation. I also appreciate that Dr. Kelly no longer uses the "old" glaucoma testing method (the puff of air in the eyes): A few years ago, by using a more modern test, he determined that my eye pressure was somewhat elevated and encouraged me to see a specialist ... who ultimately made the glaucoma diagnosis a few months later. I feel fortunate that the diagnosis was made while I was still relatively young and before significant damage had occurred to my vision. Doctor gave me the wrong prescription, receptionist was extremely rude. The doctor was totally rude and dismissive. Kept brushing his legs up against me even after moving my legs away multiple times. The receptionist would not let me look around and pick out frames. Told me to give him back a pair because he didn't like how they looked without considering whether or not I liked them. Above everything though he messed up my prescription. I left with my prescription without picking out glasses and got a pair at costco, when I put them on it looked like I was looking through a magnifying glass. Totally off. read more

I actually find Dr. Kelly to be a great optometrist. I've been coming to him for years - he's very personable, which I find very important in a doctor. I like it when people who take care of my health remember who I am, ask me about my family and how I'm doing. He is also very knowledgeable and professional about his practice - you can't go wrong with this doctor. The reason my review gives 3 stars is because the receptionist has gotten every single one of my orders in the last few years wrong. She is very good about helping you try on glasses and giving you feedback. She is very sweet. On the other hand, I always get either the wrong number of boxes of contacts, the wrong shape of frameless lenses, one time the type of lens I ordered was transcribed wrong. Without fail. Perhaps if you are very very clear about what you want her to do, you'll get your order right. I will try that my next visit. That and I've never found a convenient chance to complain, since at the time, I went to college in a different state, so sending my glasses in to be changed would leave me blind for several weeks. read more

Giving 2 stars mostly because of the receptionist. The male receptionist at this optometry communicated to me in a very condescending way, kept rolling his eyes and sighed - but he was very nice to the older male customer (I'm Asian female in mid-20s). Dr. Kelly did a great job on the eye exam, gave me thorough explanation, and I could see he was making an effort to be friendly. After the contact lens evaluation, he handed me contact lens samples that expired 5 years ago. When I asked him if he could give me ones that aren't expired, he said that they should be fine to wear and that it's not his fault if my eyes fall out. Unfortunately my experience with Dr. Kelly was not anything like the other reviews. I actually ended up here because I go to Skyline and they have a deal with him, and there are vouchers for a discounted exam.. I should have known that anything that has a discount cannot be the best service out there. The doctor does not smile.. he is very stern and a little douche like in my opinion. I don't know if its because I am Asian or the fact that I had the voucher from school, but his receptionist and himself were not the most friendly people in the world. I didn't feel comfortable with my visit nor did I want to go back after my first exam. (I had to go back again to make sure the new contacts were okay). My dad was also with me and not once did the doctor greet him. I don't know what it is... but I think he better take that big fat stick out of his @$$. Dr. Kelly was my optometrist for several years, and I always found him fine until my last visit. He spent the entire exam lecturing me about my weight and trying to get me to join Weight Watchers with him! When I asked him how my weight was effecting my eyesight (especially considering my eyesight had improved), he admitted it wasn't but said "you should lose weight anyway." Now, before you all jump on me, let me say that I am not saying I don't need to lose weight. However, I have several very complicated health issues that Dr. Kelly is aware of those issues. In addition, he is my EYE DOCTOR not my General Practitioner or Internist. If my regular Internist isn't on my case to lose weight, why is my eye doctor? The front desk receptionist/assistant Janet is amazing and I will miss her as I find a new eye doctor. I am giving him 3 stars because I did have good service. He would have gotten 4 if he didn't lecture me about issues unrelated to my eye health. read more

I found this optometrist via my insurance website, but I'm glad I did. Dr. Kelly was very nice and helpful. I had concerns about my eyes and he went above and beyond to try to find any issues and to explain what he saw. He was quite knowledgeable and thorough. He wasn't trying to rush me out and he really took the time to do a complete analysis of what my prescription should be. He had me focus on certain letters to make sure that the prescription he was giving me was correct, none of my past optometrist ever did that. He was very patient as I'm the type of person that says, "Can you do that over again? Go back to the first lense." ...and I probably did that about 6 times. His secretary was very nice and had it together. She was quite helpful and knowledgeable about all the clients and their insurance coverage. Dr. Kelly was very helpful in getting me both contacts and glasses. Because my eyes are both -1.25, it is not strictly necessary for me to wear contacts/glasses all the time. Dr. Kelly recommended that I get one-day contacts, which fit my needs much better than any I have gotten in the past, since I am able to wear them anytime without the hassle of storing them in solution, only to not be used for the next 4-5 days. I was able to take home contacts the same day, and my glasses were ready within a week. I'd highly reccomend Dr. Kelly to anyone looking for an eye doctor. read more

One day after I visted Dr. Kelly, I found one of my glasses nose pads was missing and asked for help, she charged me $4 for that! I was kind of shocked. If there were 6 stars to give, Dr. Kelly would get them. I came to him with a serious eye problem because my regular optometrist of 16 years kept telling me that my eyes were okay. By the time I went to Dr. Kelly both of my eyes were so bad, I could barely see. After explaining what was going on to his receptionist, I was fit in to his schedule that same day. Dr. Kelly diagnosed my condition and started me on medicine immediately. He also met me at a specialist's office the following day for secondary evaluation. He continued treating my eyes (until they were better) for almost 6 months). During that time, Dr. Kelly often checked on me at home. I am happy to say that my vision improved and I can see again. I attribute this to his experience, commitment to repair my eyes, and quick diagnosis. His receptionist is the nicest lady. Always professional and very down to earth. One of the previous reviewers mentioned that Dr. Kelly's has a stern personality. I thought that too, after my first visit. He might come across as "all business", but that is not the case if you hang in there. Maybe he's just trying to screen out bad customers!
