I've been wearing glasses for nearly 8 years now and while I've always had frames that worked I had…read morenever truly loved the practice(s) I had tried out... until Ideal Eyes. This female-ran business really has it all--the staff is kind and knowledgeable, the place is clean and well decorated, and Dr. Surh is a master of her craft. Not only was she able to quickly get my prescription updated (and answer any and all questions about my eye health), she was equally great at helping me ease my way into contact lenses. Past optometrists have been reluctant to get me onto contacts because of my astigmatism, but Dr. Surh was flexible and gave me plenty of options (with follow-ups) until I found the perfect lenses. Overall, a great and painless place to keep your eye health in check. And while I haven't purchased frames from them directly I can attest to their wide and stylish selection. So happy to have found this gem!

UPDATE: After all that, I decided I'd had enough and told them I was moving on to another provider…read more You'd think that would be the end of the story. It was not. When I booked with the new place, I was informed my exam wouldn't be covered by insurance -- because my old provider had submitted a pre-authorization request and never cancelled it. The new office couldn't clear it themselves; only the original provider could release it. So, one more email, back into the void. I asked them directly: did your office request a pre-authorization on my behalf? They didn't actually admit to that -- instead they just said they'd cleared it, so the new office should be able to pull it now. Should. Great. Let's recap: I never had a confirmed appointment with them, by their own account, and yet somehow they'd found the time to file paperwork with my insurance company that then sat there blocking me from being seen anywhere else. No apology for that part. Almost impressive, honestly, in a "how did you manage to mess up two entirely separate processes in service of one appointment" kind of way. It also took one final round-trip with them before I could actually move on -- fitting, since the whole saga has had the vibes of a messy college breakup: the drawn-out final logistics, the ex who's still holding onto your hoodie. Small detail while I'm here: their emails are often signed "Thanks, Ideal Eyes Team," versus the name of a human. After enough of these exchanges, you start to wonder if there's a person back there at all, or just a very polite AI fielding damage control. On the bright side: I went to the new provider yesterday, and it was like stepping into a different world entirely. Professional, communicative, and nobody made me forward an email to prove anything. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

We've come here a few times over the years and have always had a positive experience. You generally…read moreneed to make an appointment, though I believe they do walk-ups if they have availability. This is an "Independent Doctor of Optometry", that happens to be located inside Costco. They charge $90 for an eyeglasses exam, and $120 for the glasses and contacts. Some insurances cover eye care, though the pricing seems reasonable even if paying out-of-pocket. Even with insurance, there may be a co-pay, specifically for contacts. There is also an additional option that can be done during your exam, which is called "optomap". The optomap is basically an ultra-widefield image of your retina that they use to help detect eye and other diseases. It costs $60, and is NOT covered by insurance. We did them during our last visit in April 2023, as it was the first we had heard about it. We were undecided if we wanted to do it again during our recent visit, though they mentioned we could do our normal exam and see if the doctor recommends it based on the results. Once you check-in and are ready, the whole process is pretty quick and painless (literally and figuratively). They ask you to wear a mask (provided) as you approach the first machine in the main room. You line your head and chin up to the machine and look normally. There is an image that is initially blurry, then adjusts to be clear based on how your eye sees it. After that, they blow small puffs of air into each eye; this is my least favorite part. This whole process only takes a few minutes, then they call you into the room to chat with the actual doctor. This is where they sit you in the more official chair and slide over the bigger machine. They show you a line of letters and ask you the ever-famous "better 1 or better 2". After that they see if you can read the line of letters, similar to at the DMV. This is how they determine your prescription. I had to pull my mask down for this as the lens kept getting fogged up. The last step is looking into your eyes with a light and what looks to be some sort of magnifying machine. After all was said and done, she determined that my prescription had not changed from my last visit nearly two years ago. She also said everything looked good and healthy, meaning I did not need to do the optomap this time around. Overall I definitely recommend this Costco optometry location. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and everything was efficient and seamless. We checked in a little early, and I was finished before the actual time of my scheduled appointment. My partner was with the doctor for a bit longer, as she also has contacts. Once you're done and have your prescription, there is a huge area right next door with hundreds of glasses to browse. Thanks again, see you in a couple years!

Worst eye doctor I have ever had…read more Dr. Martin was rude and defensive throughout my appointment. I came in because my new prescription was too weak for my first eye exam at the Foster City location which resulted in an incorrect prescription, so I decided to try the Airport Boulevard location instead. I was experiencing blurry vision while walking around the house and when driving. At this point I go to South San Francisco Costco for my second attempt at getting the correct prescription from Costco. Dr. Martin is the doctor there. When I explained that my vision was still blurry and asked if my prescription could be increased, Dr. Martin repeatedly argued that there was no need to make any changes. After several minutes of discussion, he finally agreed to increase the prescription slightly. Unfortunately, when I received my new glasses, my left eye was clear, but my right eye was still noticeably blurry. I ended up having to return a third time, this time to the Foster City location, hoping they could finally correct my prescription. Overall, this was a very frustrating experience. I felt dismissed when I raised concerns about my vision, and I expected my symptoms to be taken more seriously. If you are a woman you know how it feels to be dismissed by a man that thinks they know more than you. That is exactly how it was. My third time taking the exam at Foster City this time. I went with my dad. So they can finally listen to my concerns. Maybe a male presence might change something. They are so bad at their job. Don't go to any costco for an Eye exam.
