They really put me at ease and took care of a situation that had bothered me for years. No other dentist was able to figure out what was wrong, and wanted to a lot of expensive work that "might" fix it, but Dr. Ma was able to figure it out and help me get it taken care of in a matter of days. I just can't even describe the level of compassion and kindness in this office. Linda felt like a friend when I was nervous, stressed out and in pain, even tho I was a new patient. I really enjoyed my 4-year experience at Stephens Dentistry. The staff is wonderfully friendly - that includes the doctors, the receptionists, and the technicians too. They work hard to get every patient to adopt good habits and to remember you from visit to visit. They are never behind with their appointments, and the facilities are top notch. I've had regular cleanings and a couple of cavities filled here. Although I haven't taken advantage of any of their cosmetic offerings, the staff are sure to mention one or two cosmetic dentistry options every time I visit. It never quite feels pushy, but just know to expect it. I get a feeling that they have a lot of high-end patients who want perfect smiles. Since I am not flush with cash and am relying on dental insurance, I just stick with the basics. In terms of costs, I do get the feeling that the services are a tiny bit more expensive than some other offices (perhaps for the reasons above - you don't have such happy staff if you are underpaying). It may also be because they are more thorough in their use of xrays, oral cancer screenings, etc. They do give you the choice to opt out of these things too and let you know what is needed versus optional. All in all, great dentist in a great location! read more

Yes, I know. Going to the dentist is not fun for anyone. But if you're scared to death, and have to go because you think you've cracked a tooth, Stephens Dentistry is the place to go. I called at 9am, and had a new patient appointment scheduled for 11:10am. When I arrived, the assistants greeted me, offered me a glass of water, and hung up my coat for me. Every single person I met in this office was extremely friendly. Even Dr. Bob stopped by to say hi to my husband in the waiting room, while Dr. Jim worked on my smile. I am SO not a fan of the dentist, but I feel much better going back to see Dr. Jim. He put me at ease, explained everything he was doing, and even let me use the kids' digital x-ray senser because the adult one was so large it caused me to gag like crazy. By the time I left, I was feeling so comfortable that I forgot to pick up my coat before leaving. And, it was there waiting for me when I went back a few hours later to retrieve it. read more

Compared to any other dentist or doctor office I have ever been to, these folks are by far the most friendly, understanding, and compassionate. The first time I had a TMJ incident, they got me in same-day to check it out when my doctor said it'd be 2 weeks before an appointment became available. You know they care when, from visit-to-visit, they refer to you by name and can recall topics of mutual interest to chat about. They never seem rushed or annoyed at your mere presence (like my doctor and his staff do) and seem to genuinely care about your issues and concerns. Do to several moves, changes in insurance coverage, and fluctuations in my dental needs I've had many dentists over the years. I can say with confidence that Stephens Dentistry is the best I've experienced. Everything other reviewers mentioned about friendly staff, welcoming surroundings, etc. is true--but what really makes Stephens stand out is the sheer talent and technical skill of the dentists. Every crown I've had done by Dr. Jim instantly feels like it's been in my mouth since I lost my baby teeth, and he's also saved some teeth that a prior dentist wanted to remove. I also experience less discomfort, as they are just plain good at what they do, so they do it quickly and efficiently. They also seem to have the latest in tools and technology, which probably contributes to the quality of their results. I dunno. Whatever they are doing, it works, and I hope they keep it up. I will never be thrilled about going to the dentist, but when I need to go, this is the place--hands down. read more

I recently found Stephens Dentistry when I moved to IL. I was nervous about finding a dentist because in the past I had some work done that I wasn't pleased with. As soon as I walked into the office I was greeted by the front desk, and asked to hang up my coat and offer me a glass of water. I felt right at home! I had a cleaning done by the lovely hygienist, who explained to me a few things that I need to work on. Can I just say no one wants to be told they need to floss more, but she handled it in such a loving and gentle way. I later had to come back to have some work done by Dr. Jim. He gently gave me the anesthetic and I didn't feel a thing the whole procedure! He showed me what he was doing, took pictures during the procedure and explained what I was looking at. I was in great hands, and never doubted his expertise one bit! I am so glad to have found such a great dental office! read more

Even though this dentist is out of my insurance network, I prefer to pay the cost over looking elsewhere. I appreciate that every aspect of a dentist office visit is considered with care I feel the staff all take my whole being into account. I have to say this is one star dentist that I would never go back or I don't even want to call them anymore. The staff members seem to be friendly but not sincere or care. They never tried to help you for any financial concern except they just ask you pay you up in the front or receive bills over and over even after I paid. Compared to other dentists, they over charge for all service including crown. I was charged over $1800 for one crown. I felt like I had to go over 30 times in 3 months to fix my 3 cavities and I was broke at the end of the service.... They don't accept or consider any discounts or anything. Because of the reasons above, I finally decided to change my dentist right away but now they are asking me to pay $25.00 for sending my medical record and X-ray to my new dentist. .. again very disappointing. read more

Great dentists! Everything other reviewers wrote is spot-on. I'm docking it 1 star though b/c my recent experience was disappointing. I should probably have said something when I was in the chair, but didn't really think about it until I left, so sorry Stephens...you're getting your feedback on a public forum. My only issue was the cleaning wasn't as thorough as it usually is. Okay, it was around Christmas time. And okay, my hygienist was 7-1/2 months pregnant. And okay, it was near the end of the day. But still...the cleaning was cursory at best. She barely bothered with plaque removal (and I always have a decent amount to remove, I must say), she rushed through the flossing, and the polish took all of about 20 seconds. I'm used to leaving the dentist with my teeth *feeling* like they've been worked on/cleaned/polished. Sometimes I even leave with my mouth feeling abused, tortured (- ; lol. But this time...nothing. It was a perfunctory cleaning and I'm still kind of ticked about it. She was very nice and friendly though, as always. But I love this place and so I'll be back. read more

My husband and I have been going to Stephen's dentistry for over 2 years now and have not been disappointed with any visits. Like other reviewers have said, It's not the most fun to go to the dentist, but this is as close to fun as you can get! I usually get the first appointment of the day so I can be done before work and the staff is always very chipper and excited even early in the morning (can't always say I feel that awake, but it's a nice way to get motivated to take on the day). I am lucky that i have not had any issues with my teeth so I cannot speak to anything but cleanings and x-rays which have always been excellent. My husband, however, had a tooth repaired and some fillings done and he had his wisdom teeth ground down (they didn't need to be removed). Each of these procedures went perfectly and he has an amazing smile to show for it! Stephen's does often cost a little out of pocket, even with insurance, but it's well worth the peace of mind since you only get one real set of adult teeth! read more

I had an appointment to see Dr. Lucas today. Exceptional dentist; he did an amazing job of both cleaning but also articulating a game plan for the future. The staff was also super nice and very efficient in making my first visit to see him meaningful. I really love this dental office. On my first visit, just about everyone in the office introduced themselves to me. The hygienist took a lot of time to explain what she was doing and a lot of the things I have experienced in dental offices all of my life began to make sense. She had several helpful suggestions for brushing and a little inexpensive product that would help me get the heard to reac spots. Dr. Bob also spent a good deal of time talking to me about my mouth overall and what might happen over time and we agreed on an approach. Just a great common sense way to run an office. My family has been coming to Stephens Dentistry for more than 20 years now. Dr. Jim and Dr. Bob (and in case of my mom, Dr. Jim Sr., who founded the practice) have been not only providing great dental care, but also did it in a relaxed and helpful way. They are always ready to explain the recommended procedure, plan ahead and actually put the fillings etc. with the greatest care. I still remember Dr. Jim working on one particularly complicated filling to get it just right, taking his time. The staff is very friendly, helpful with advice and hints on how to keep the dental health up with tips on flossing, mouthwashes etc. Even when I worked and lived in Europe for a few years, I would always use my trips to Chicago to do my cleaning and check ups at Stephens'. After several months of researching the pros and cons between tradition braces and invisible braces, I decided to go with Invisalign. I was referred to Dr. Jim at Stephens Dentistry by a friend and was completely wowed by the level of care and service that I received at both of my visits. Dr. Jim never missed a beat in terms of communication. His staff was beyond patient with me at my first visit for Invisalign consultation. I had to bring my three year old at the last minute and forgot my dental records from my previous provider. I went to Dr. Bob Stephens at Stephens Dentistry. One procedure went badly, and was not handled professionally. I was not informed of all of the costs for the procedures. Being told about a large extra charge while in the chair and half way through does not work for me. They took more than 20 x-rays during the initial exam which was expensive, unnecessary and uncomfortable. When I asked that my records be transferred to a new dentist, only half of the X-rays were sent. This office does relentless marketing. When you recline in the chair, there is an ad for the dentist on the ceiling! read more
