Volunteer makes it an easier experience for both child and parent. Due to COVID, they have you call upon arrival, share your parking spot number, and wait in your car. When they are ready for you, the hygienist comes out to get you. They are currently (Feb 2022) requiring masks for those inside as well. Once inside, they weigh your kiddo (not sure why?) and bring them back to the exam room. Most X-rays and the cleaning and exam will be done in the same room. It has a child-sized dental chair and a TV mounted to the ceiling for the kids to watch Disney while their mouth is examined. The only time my son left was to get the 360 x-ray done of his mouth. The hygienist and dentist, Dr. Valerie, are great at explaining what they will be doing, patient, and have a calming demeanor that can put even the most nervous, wiggly offspring at ease. The trip to the treasure box doesn't hurt with easing the nerves, either! ;-)

So she only got to sit up on a bench while they manually brushed her teeth instead of actually letting her sit in the dentist regular chair. She got a floride treatment also. But they were demanding that she pay her co- pay up front or they were going to refuse service to any of the grandchildren that I brought there. I explained to them that I didn't know she had a " copay" & so i told them to go ahead and treat her without the Xrays. They were refusing to clean my granddaughter and grandson's teeth without Xrays done first. So we spoke to the manager after i was told to leave and reschedule the appointment after i drove an hour and a half to get there. The manager okayed the services to be performed and decided to bill their parents for the copay to be paid before their next visits/ soon.the grandchildren finally got their Xrays and teeth cleaned with a floride treatment before we left.i was then asked if they were going to come back to see them again or go somewhere else?

I think this is one of the only offices to return my phone call when I was searching for a dentist for my children. My 9 year old had to have a tooth pulled and was nervous at first since it was the first time she had to experience anything of the sort. The dental assistant made her feel at ease! Plus the fact they have mini TV's playing Disney movies really sealed the deal for her. My toddler also had his first exam here and the staff were lovely to both kids.

"Another update?" you ask. I believe that past experiences- good and bad- bear reporting…read more We had an appointment at GB last spring of 2019. We checked in. Other patients began to quickly arrive after us, as the schoolday was over. I noticed that kids that had arrived after us were being called in before us. After forty minutes had passed, I asked at the front desk what had happened. I was told that a child- that had arrived after us- was a very nervous patient and had to have an exam room all by herself. (And here I was thinking that maybe they had not called us in yet because they tried to keep my autistic daughter in a separate, quiet room.) After another twenty minutes, they finally called us in. OK...so why wasn't that nervous child set up for the last appointment of the day? And why were all the other kids that arrived after us given the go ahead, some even after the nervous child entered her exam room? Because according to Placement-Around-Nervous-Child Law, no patient should have been called after a nervous one enters an exam room. My autistic child has trouble with waiting rooms. After a long wait, she lays on the couch, attracting stares. No admonishments budge her. I should have announced that she was nervous, and asked for a waiting room all for herself. One good thing came out of our dis. Later that early evening, we arrived at an intersection where a man had just overdosed. We were able to help save him. I will never forget our Great Beginnings balloon lifting softly into the perfect sky, free and innocent. It all left me breathless. This past fall, the new dentist that checked out my daughter's teeth asked if she had had braces. My daughter replied that she had. The dentist stated that her retainer had to be worn all the time.* If only she knew! When my younger daughter was in elementary school, she participated in "Girls on the Run" during her last three years there. GOTR is a running program that empowers girls and enriches their lives. I had noticed that Great Beginnings had a team. Last spring of 2019, GB sponsored the race. That is fantastic, but I was a bit taken aback by the title of the race: "The Great Beginnings & Great Smiles Girls on the Run of WNC 5K". It used to be titled: "Girls on the Run of WNC (Spring/Winter) 5K". I guess people get over it when they get the free coffee before the race. Curious about whether or not GB has a current GOTR team, I went to the GB website. I noticed that GB offers scholarships to seniors in high school. Part of the application process requires the student to "...provide a list of your involvement in community and church activities...". Translation: Christians only. On another dark note, GB supports Eblen Charities. The director of Eblen, Bill Murdock, retired last spring due to him being "charged with a felony sex crime in 1988."** The current Eblen board stated: "We continue to stand in support of Bill Murdock." Translation: "We do not care that a minor was impacted negatively by a criminal. We do not care about the young women in our own lives who may one day be hurt in the same way." Look, I have no hard feelings towards GB. But all this stuff is too much. *My daughter wore her retainer daily for mostly a full year. Sometimes she skipped a day. She sometimes wears her retainer at night now. Even with wearing her retainer during the day for that past time, her teeth have moved at an alarming rate. They sometimes appear almost as they did pre-braces. I cannot imagine what other kids' teeth look like if they did not wear their retainer during the day. (See my previous update.) **CNN article, Fantz and Kestin.

With that surprise showing on my face I said, "that's not what we discussed. No teeth should have been extracted." The dentist abruptly cut me off with, "we have a signed treatment plan" and left the room. Shortly afterwards the receptionist returned to discuss the mix up. A proposed treatment plan different than the one we had signed and paid for somehow ended up in the dentists agenda. I understand that mistakes are inevitable, but I can't understand this level of negligence with no preventive system of checks and balances. Moreover, while after an off handed attempt at blaming us for the mishap by asking questions and discussing all possible scenarios months ago, they did eventually apologize and offer to reimburse the additional funds paid for services not received. However, both the dentist and receptionist were far too defensive and I just don't feel they sincerely regret what has happened. We're home now and I feel just terrible about all of this. We made every attempt and would have spared no expense to get the best possible dental care for our daughter. And yet, here we are with a confused little girl, unnecessarily dealing with perhaps 6 months or a year of eating without front teeth. Perhaps I should have insisted that a parent be allowed to witness the procedure or, well, I don't even know what else to say. This is the worst experience I've had with a medical professional and it happened to my little girl. All this aside, the procedure was at the Kingsport location. The environment was nice, the efforts to entertain and engage the children were great. The staff was quite friendly, until there was a problem. Everything was on point aside from the one thing that mattered.
