Run, don't walk, as far away as you can from this place. If you don't you will be the victim of a concert you didn't sign up for, (just wanted to get an instrument fixed, as advertised and get out. I brought my own strings and the guy had no clue how to fix the instrument and wasted my time trying to. He then suggested I should learn guitar and wanted me to sign up for guitar lessons. No thanks, I'm good. He then rips out his guitar and starts playing "guess what song I'm playing" and when he forgets the lyrics, I supply them. What the fuck am I doing here? Did I sign up for an open mic show? Is this guy tripping? As an added bonus, they ask all kinds of personal questions as you try to figure out your easiest escape. There is a guy out front that keeps on walking back and forth in front of the store. This is creepy. They push the guitar lessons again and find a way to insult me, maybe because I don't want to take his guitar lessons? Then he gives me his number so I can be sure to call to sign up for the lessons. With you? Are you out of your mind? Yes, you are out of your mind. And I know the safest thing for me to do with someone like that, is not to get angry, just humor him and GTF outta there asap. I was looking for a beginner acoustic guitar for my 9-year old son who has been playing electric guitar for about a year and a half. My son has never strummed an acoustic guitar before so I did not mind the employee giving tips regarding how to strum, but the employee said incredibly rude things (in front of my son) commenting on the quality and cost of my son's guitar instruction. He proceeded to give him a mini-lesson (that we didn't ask for) and then became visibly frustrated with my son during this mini-lesson (that we didn't ask for). We did not buy anything and will not return. There are plenty of options for buying guitars in this area, likely several with better customer service. read more

I would not return. When I called to schedule some guitar lessons to brush up on what I learned as a kid, I was told that I would be called back by the guitar teacher about pricing and scheduling and things of that nature, which I thought was weird because how could a manager not know the pricing for lessons at THEIR shop? I was called back by the guitar teacher who was very rude on the phone. I ignored the short and snappy responses I was given when I answered his question, although I soon realized I shouldn't have. He went on the ask me who the lessons were for (me) and to ask whether I was employed or not. I told him I was a student, so he asked me what school I went to and of course I told him. He then asked me what my major was and when I answer philosophy (I know the stereotypes it carries), he asked me if I was going to be " a waiter or a taxi driver". That comment was completely unnecessary and very degrading. Obvious the manager/owner doesn't know anything about the shop he's running and the people giving lessons show their students unconscionable disrespect. Don't go to these losers. read more

Walked in to try to buy a tuner and strings. The guy talked to me like I was some kid, I've been playing guitar for 10 years. The guy tried to charge me $40 for one set of strings and a clip on tuner, didn't tell me the costs of either. I understand the local music shop markup, but this was outrageous. Before I went, I called them to check if they were open. They must have saved my number and proceeded to call and text me multiple times after I walked out. Main St. Music is my favorite local business in Waltham; between all their teachers and regulars, there's so much musical knowledge and ability here. I don't know why people complain about prices--this isn't a corporation, they don't get the kinds of massive bulk discounts you're going to find at Guitar Center. That being said, you're going to find much more here in the way of community than you'll ever find at some big name store staffed by egotistical kids. The staff remembers you, will sit down to play with you, will go completely out of their way to help you, and can get you something if they don't have it there already, even foreign instruments that you can't usually find. The weekly meetups on Wednesday nights are great and always diverse. Shop local, keep your mom 'n pops in business. I know I'll come here before I go looking anywhere else. read more

If you're looking for the character and small-town vibe you can only find at a mom-n-pop music store, definitely go see the folks at Main Street Music! They were much more solicitous while I was in the store than the preoccupied staff at Guitar Center in Boston, where I was mostly ignored and left to figure things out on my own. A couple months ago, I bought a Roland keyboard from Main Street Music. Main Street has an impressive selection of both modern and vintage keyboards and electric organs in stock. They have a lot of ready-to-play keyboard/organ inventory that isn't on the showroom floor, so if you don't see what you want in the main shop, ask -- they might have it on hand. Because I wanted a recently-announced item, Main Street didn't have it in stock, and had to order a unit direct from Roland. The first keyboard they ordered was damaged by UPS in transit, but Bob and Peter were incredibly helpful and accommodating - they got a brand-new replacement ASAP. While the replacement was in transit, I had the original (dented) unit at home for my practice needs. I'm not sure what the story was with the previous negative Yelp reviews -- they certainly worried me when I saw them -- but my only issue with Main Street was that I had to be proactive about calling them back to get status updates throughout the ordering/shipment process. read more

He also tried to charge me $10 for 4 pieces of paper taped together and insisted it had at least 20 songs in it, despite being 4 pieces of paper. If you are looking for a little bit of musical knowledge , This is not the store! If what you need is just a matter of inventory, maybe they will have what you want . . maybe. I am the kind of guy who would rather spend my money at a mom and pop shop than a conglomerate like Guitar Center. I have never been to a music shop, however, where actual musicians do not actually work. I brought in my Mandolin for a re-stringing/tuning. First off, he cut all of my old strings at once to get them off. Every musician knows that you take off and put on, one string at a time. Then he tried to double loop the strings through the eyelits. That is when I told him to STOP! When stringing an instrument, you wrap the first loop around the top of the eyelit, and the rest below. On top of all of that he charged me $15 for the strings and $20 for the time it took him to annoy me. read more

THIS PLACE IS A TOTAL SCAM. I have reported a dispute to the BBB AND filed a dispute with my credit card company. I was looking to take piano lessons and called to make an appointment. They asked for my credit card # to hold for the appointment -- sure this is pretty standard. Shortly after, I realized I would not be able to commit to learning piano right now so I called to cancel 8 days in advance of my lesson date. I learned that my credit card had been charged the lesson amount and when I asked if they were gonna cancel it he said no. He said I could get store credit for it. Excuse me? I never authorized the transaction. No one told me I was going to actually be charged a non-refundable amount and I was never informed of a cancellation policy. Their joke of a website does not indicate any cancellation policies for their lessons either (I checked and have screenshots). I started getting upset and asked why he didn't tell me this, and he said that he didn't think I was going to cancel so he didn't bring it up. That's literally the dumbest thing I've EVER heard. At the end, he said he'll speak with his manager and get back to me. Surprise! He didn't. I called again 2 days later and then sent 2 emails but never heard from them. They LITERALLY stole from me! We were charged $325 for a detailed assessment/ report to get information about our beautiful piano. After almost two months we have received no report nor information. Our phone calls are not returned, our email was not answered. We are now filing a report with BBB, City of Waltham and we are disputing the charge with our credit card company. Update: Bob, the "owner" returned my call, told me he was going to write a negative Yelp review about me and hung up on me. A really classy "business owner." The guy running the store rummaged around through the books, continually getting me to remind him what books I was looking for (they're standards - Bastien and Burnam), finally finding a used copy of one of the books. Which, since I was (shamefully) late-shopping with only a couple days before her lessons started I had to buy. For more than the price of a new book. And it's full of writing and notes. In pen. Or How one really rude gesture gets you one star on yelp? I needed a cable for a jamming session in the evening. I prefer buying from local music stores and this place was close by. I went there during my lunch break and it was locked. There is a sign which tells you to call a number if locked. I called the number and a old hippie looking guy showed up. He sounded irritated already and asked me "Did you tell what you wanted on the phone?" I said no I just called the number. So now I asked for the cable. He told me " I will get it for you" I said OK and started walking behind him to browse their inventory. They have a good spread of old guitars/keyboards/pianos. He turned again and told me "I will get it for you". I nodded with some confusion and continued browsing the store. He came very close to me and stared me into the eyes and said "I will get it for you" Now I understood he didn't want me following him around and browsing the store. Maybe they keep the precious cables in a very secret location. At that point I felt like telling him "don't bother getting it for me" but I said what the heck let me buy the cable and get outta here. Next : the cable looked old and was not in packaging. I asked if it is used. He lied: No it is new. I asked for the price and he said $20. Usually these go anywhere from $7-$12 but I didn't want to waste my trip and I shelled out the 20 bucks. And yes he added $1 in tax. At 6.25 % mass rate it come to buck 25. I am not sure what percentage he used to calculate that. I guess he just wanted to pocket an extra dollar just for keeps. He wanted cash which unfortunately I had. Otherwise I was planning to bolt by saying that I will withdraw some cash and never be back :-) After I paid, suddenly this guy started chatting about what music I play. He tried to play some tunes on guitar which I could not identify. He was playing really simple tunes badly. At which point he announced "so you know nothing about pop music". I said "well I know a little bit". But Mr. Old Hippie made it clear. "No I am saying you know nothing about pop music" OK You are right. For some reason he tried noting down my address and phone number which I repent giving him my town and phone number. Not that he actually give me a receipt. So please learn from my 20 dollar mistake and save your dollars and go some place else. Like another reviewer has noted. This place is a total scam and I second that. Please do not do business with this company, look elsewhere. I was charged $335.00 to have a technician come over the house only to tell me that my Hammond organ could not be repaired. This is "highway" robbery. I was not told upfront that it was going to cost that much money. I was told the cost was for the technician to come over the house to fix the organ period......
