We used Steve Piper & Sons to trim some trees at on church property. They showed up on time and thoroughly went through the trees to remove any dead branches and raised the canopy on one of the trees. The trees look totally different now the work is completed. Steve piper and sons came to remove a 30'-40' tree that was kinda in a tricky spot. It was next to a pool on one side and a fence on the other. The tree grew up and over the fence into the neighbors yard right over a playhouse/ swingset. Which means they couldn't just down the tree and then cut it up. They had to cut it up while it was still in the air. They got the tree removed flawlessly Without damaging a thing! Kudos to the whole team getting the tree down! They did an amazing job! read more

The City of Wheaton was putting in a new sidewalk on my block. The contractor they chose for the job selected Steve Piper & Sons to cut down trees along the block that needed to be removed to accommodate the sidewalk. In the process of cutting down my neighbor's tree they broke the top off her lamppost and the electrical wires were damaged. Even though the tree was large they should have exercised more care and caution to avoid damaging someone's property. Now she has to go through the process of getting it fixed. read more

You get what you pay for is the headline on this....the GOOD ..my experience was with Mulch only...the team is courteous, well organized and know what they are doing when it comes to interacting with customers. The NOT SO GOOD....The spring special mulch overall was poor quality, has almost completely lost its color in a month and there are a lot of twigs, wires and such in the making of that mulch. We have purchased our wood from Steve for the past several years. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED with this year's delivery. Rather than logs for my fireplace, we got a lot of splintered wood mixed in with the logs. Even WORSE.... I have not had one good fire with this wood , because it is WET!!!! Recommend Steve Piper and Sons? I wood. Just purchased two face cords of mixed hardwoods stacked. Excellent quality wood, properly stacked (no crisscrossing or short stacking) and they clean up when they are done. When it comes to firewood, it's nice not having to deal with all of the companies that try to rip you off. So, Steve Piper isn't the cheapest.. but it's a fair deal for good stuff. I've purchased a lot of mulch from them too: SP "Hello" Me "Hi I would like to purchase some mulch for my yard" SP "Sure, how much do you need?" Me "15 yards" SP "Are you sure? That's a lot of mulch" Me "I didn't get enough last time. Drop it on the left side of the driveway" I come home that day... "Holy crap! That's a lot of mulch!" Great quality... but it took a while to distribute.. 15 yards is a whole lot of mulch. read more

I've had a tree removed and firewood delivered by this company. The delivery was very good (though I felt the wood was not fully cured one year). My feelings on the company shifted, however, with the tree removal. Communication was awful. After the tree was cut, it took weeks and several phone calls to find out when the stump would be ground. (They didn't explain at first that it'd involve multiple visits.) They just NEVER called. Ever. I felt completely in the dark. At the time, I couldn't tell if it was insufficient staff, poor management or carelessness. It just made me feel uneasy and question whether they'd EVER come back. I have purchased mulch from them ,year after year, for many years. Their prices are good and the quality of the mulch has always been very good. I've seen other reviews that the telephone staff is less then helpful--this has not been true of my experience with them. Their telephone staff has always been very helpful with determining my needs and setting up a delivery date that works for me. I buy about 4-5 square yards of mulch each year. I represent the Brighton Ridge HOA. We had a huge linden tree at our entrance split by the wind. It needed removal and stump grinding. Of the five estimates we received, Steve Piper and Sons was the lowest. They were so much lower that we added the removal of two additional small trees and the pruning of three large trees and they were still under one of the other bidders. The four-man team they sent did a great job on all six trees. All four men were easy to communicate with, were very efficient and left the site spotless. A few years ago they removed 57 trees for me, Mainly ash trees, and were great then too. read more

I purchased a 1/2 face cord of firewood Monday. The wood burns very poorly. They mention on their website that the wood is seasoned for a year. I doubt it. They also recommend you store it out of the elements for a few days before burning. You really shouldn't need to do that. It's also pretty impractical. If you have a gas starter (I do), then you'll eventually be able to burn it. Otherwise, I'd look for a different provider. read more

09/15: For those of you that are considering purchasing firewood - think again. I have purchased firewood from Steve Piper & Sons for probably 8+ years. About 6- 7 weeks ago, I went to place an order and was advised the current inventory of wood was still curing and would not be ready until 9/19. I told them I would then take delivery on 9/19 assuming the firewood would be fully cured. This past Saturday, the wood was delivered & stacked as it has been for the past 8 years. After the guys left, I ventured out to see the wood stacks only to find wood which was "soaked" and "filthy dirty" with wood shavings and wood chips. Just a mess with what I believe to be "green" wood. I immediately contacted their office and had a return call on Monday morning. I advised their young lady on the phone of the situation and offered to send pictures of what I experienced on Saturday. I wound up taking both wood stacks completely down, blowing off the wood and restacking. I asked her for confirmation that she received the photos but did not hear back so I decided to follow-up this afternoon. The end result of our discussion is that they were going to do NOTHING to satisfy my situation. I politely advised her that they had just lost a customer which she seemed to care less about. I am retired and the ~$200 in firewood is more than a few bucks but more importantly, I look forward to "fires" during the winter season. I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTH OF THIS NOTE BUT WANTED TO DOCUMENT THE ENTIRE SITUATION. DON'T GET SCREWED LIKE I DID. I had the worst experience with customer service with this company. The lady who answers the phone sounds as if she could care less if she gets you the info you need or not and will tell you anything to get you off the phone. I started the process on 5/14, they did not come out to cut the trees until 6/9 (after several phone calls), and it is now 6/21 and they still have not come back out to grind the tree stumps. After I called again today, I was told it would be three more weeks then told it would be a week and a half. This was a job worth over $1200. The only bright spot is that their team that came out was friendly and did a good job, although they did not replace all the deck furniture that they had moved. Not a big deal, but should have been done. Steve Piper, you need to work on your communication with your customers and focus more on customer service. read more

I have used Steve Piper for many years for mulch, and some tree cutting. The mulch is very important because I have a large flower garden. I have used in them in the past and received good service. I called recently to order mulch and firewood. The lady said that the mulch and firewood would be mixed up and that I would have to pick out the wood from the mulch after they dumped it in my driveway. But that's not the worst part. The delivery charge was $75. When I told the manager lady that the delivery fee was too high, she could have cared less. She made no effort at all to explain. I'm only 17 miles away, it's not like they had to make a delivery to Iowa. Too, bad for them, they lost a good customer who had given them referrals. read more

The mulch was fine as well as the mulch install. Hired them for edging and they screwed that up about as much as they could. As if they had never edged before. Even after sending "supervisors" to fix it, they screwed it up more. They have lost any hope of getting my business again. read more

Rather rude on the phone when trying to determine a window for delivery. Called them several times and was given impression I would be in morning, morning came and passed called and was told it would be right after lunch, which came and went as well, called one last time and was told they would be here before 4:30PM. That too has come and passed, no call, no update if my mulch is arriving at all today. They were prompt to call me the day before to let me know they were charging my credit card though for my order of mulch. I hired Steve Piper and sons for weeding, edging and mulch. Honestly I think that my 15 year old son could have done a better job with little direction. They left weeds and just covered them. Some of the weeds that they pulled the left laying in the yard. The edging was almost unidentifiable. Where they moved items to mulch they did not replace them and left them in the middle of the yard. It looks like I will have to go back to just delivery if that. read more

We were very impressed with the work done on our two trees that we had trimmed by Steve Piper and Sons. Not only were they a recommendation from friends but they also came in at the best quote from 3 other tree service companies. What I do want to say is that one of the workers brought to my attention that they noticed a gas leak by our house when they were leaving. Because of them, I was able to contact Nicor Gas and have the gas leak fixed without any damage to our home. I can not thank them enough for notifying us on a potentially harmful situation. They took a few weeks to fit me in the schedule and when they did it was on a day that I was not available. Consequently, they did trim my trees but minimally. Many more branches could have been trimmed and made the trees and yard to look better. I am no expert but the branches not trimmed were obvious to me. read more

I recommended Steve Piper to remove a Tree Branch that had snapped off my next door neighbors tree and fallen onto our house. This was the 1st Tree Removal Service that came to my mind... And the last. The 2 Workers came out yesterday and started working on my Neighbors Tree. They came over to my Backyard & were moving the Branches around and somehow my Brand New Shepherds Hook & Bird Feeder got damaged from whatever the workers did. It was not damaged from the Tree Falling. A couple hours into the Tree Trimming... Boom, Flash, Sizzle. Oh No... Here we go again. Electricity Cut Off. Our Lights were doing the Twilight Zone Effect. I jumped up & looked out my Patio Door and the Telephone Pole between my House & my other neighbors house is on Fire! These 2 guys are laughing, Finally, they run and grab 2 Bottles of Water and throw it on the flames? I picked up the phone & dialed 911. The Dispatcher told me to tell the workers to STOP throwing bottled water on the pole! The Fire Department came and assessed the situation and called the City to come out and repair the down electrical wires in our backyard. Now we have NO power... For 4 Hours. Because not only was the electricity out... But this incident blew a transformer down the street. Nice. That had to be fixed BEFORE the electricity in our neighborhood could be repaired & restored. What kind of "Fun" are we in for today? When these workers have to come back and finish the job they started yesterday? I realize that accidents happen.... BUT....The City said this was a careless avoidable error. For me.. I could not leave my house because I have a garage door opener that operates with electricity......could not get a phone call because my phone is operated with electricity.. Could not charge my cell phone, IPAD or Laptop....Our whole neighborhood was without power.... And this 2 morons are laughing about it? read more

Had a tree removed and then paid to have the stump ground out. Had landscapers come to put down sod and remove mulch, etc. Stump was not done properly and had to have it redone. Piper could not arrange to come when needed so had to pay others to do again. Steve was called and he was rude on the phone and basically told me to take a long walk off a short pier. I live in Cress Creek and suggest all others find an alternative tree service. I certainly will never use their service again. read more

BEWARE OF THE DECEITFUL BUSINESS PRACTICES OF STEVE PIPER & SONS ... THEY TOOK OUR MONEY AND REFUSED TO COMPLETE THE CONTACTED WORK! Following a storm, we called Steve Piper & Sons to take down a branch on a river birch tree that had sustained damage. They made us prepay $225 before they would come out because we would be out of town when the work would be done. After returning home and inspecting the work, we discovered that only the part of the branch that was hanging down was removed (which we could have done ourselves). They left the rest of the weakened branch (which will likely fall down during the next big storm) even though the contract specified that the entire limb was to be removed. I called to complain that the job was not completed and after much hassle and argument, Dan promised to come back and check it out the following Friday. That never happened (surprise surprise), so I waited a week then was forced to call the office back. The receptionist (who I can only describe as an extremely rude, belligerent and agressive sort) started arguing with me that the job was done correctly even though she had never seen the tree. I pointed out that based on what was done, they couldn't have spent more than 5 minutes on this job and had the nerve to charge $225. After these calls and leaving two unreturned voice mails with owner Steve Piper (who must not care that a customer feels completely robbed - just as long as their payment clears), the job was never completed and we still have a damaged tree limb hanging beside our house. BEYOND HORRIBLE customer service and COMPLETE RIP-OFF ARTISTS is what we experienced at Steve Piper & Sons!!!. Save yourself money and aggravation by avoiding these lying thieves and calling a business that will do what they promise and treats the customer with respect!!! read more

They KILLED my river birch tree. The tree is 60 ft tall, and 16 years old, and dead in my front yard. They killed my river birch tree and will not take responsibility for it. Since last summer when it was healthy and thriving, and this spring, when I had them prune it, it all of a sudden died. When I first called to report that it wasn't budding, they did send the estimator out, who was reluctant to accept responsibility, but who did say that they ought to do something for me. Since then I have sent an email, left a message with a receptionist and left 2 voicemails with Steve Piper, and no one has returned my messages over a period of 2 weeks. When the estimator was sent out, he even said that he couldn't see any other environmental reason why that tree died. He asked me to call Nicor to make sure that there were no underground gas leaks. I called them as soon as he left, and Nicor showed up within 45 minutes, proceeded with their tests, and predictably found no leaks. Before the estimator left, he said he would be in touch with me the following Monday. Over the weekend I emailed him asking if there was any fertilizer I could buy to try to promote the tree's growth. He did not respond to that email. The following Tuesday I left a message with the receptionist to have Dan give me a call back. He hasn't called. At the end of the week I left a voicemail with Steve Piper. He didn't call me back. The following week I left another message with Steve Piper. He still hasn't called back. I remember asking the workers when they were here earlier this season if they were taking too much off the tree. They said that they weren't. I have since spent two hours into researching whether or not over pruning can kill a tree. And, it absolutely can. I did not dumped anything on my property. There are no arboreal diseases. There were do signs of rot, or dying. There is no infestation. The only thing that happened to this tree is that I allowed this company to prune it. And it is now dead, standing 60ft tall in my front yard. And they have quit communicating with me. And I am searching for a recourse. read more
