I have used Steve Sims for years (a delivery every 2 years or so), and he always delivers great almond wood. We are very accustomed to online ordering and speedy delivery which has made us impatient with people like Steve Sims. Sometimes he takes a few days to get the wood to you and sometimes needs to change plans. He isn't a billionaire with a fleet of brand new Amazon Prime trucks. I held off writing a review because I thought the business owner might make things right. I was clearly incorrect. TL;DR right at the top... This business stole from me, and then wouldn't respond to emails or text messages. They delivered significantly less wood than I paid for, and ghosted me after doing so. Avoid them. Details... This business will absolutely rip you off. I had the same experience as Michael M in another review. I ordered a half cord of wood (which should be 64 cu ft of wood), and he delivered less than a third of a cord. (I'm being very generous by saying he even delivered 39.9 cu ft) I sent an email with all of the measurements of the stacked wood, and asked him how we should solve this, mainly requesting that he deliver the remaining 20 cu ft (giving him even more benefit, since it should be 24 cu ft). He said in an email that they could do that, and thanks for letting him know. That was a month ago, and he has ghosted me since. I have tried to contact him (Steve) several times, and there has been no response. Every email prior to getting ghosted says to "remember us on yelp" so in accordance with his wishes, I am doing so now. I would absolutely avoid this business; their customer service is bad, and frankly, they are dishonest. I suspect that any ratings here that are above one star were given by people that didn't actually measure how much wood they received. Even just a reply indicating that I was on the list and that the order wasn't forgotten would have been nice. But clearly it has been his intention all along to short me on this delivery. In summary... What I ordered: 1/2 cord, or 64 cu ft (for $300) With 16" (1.33ft) logs, this is a stack that is 8ft x 6ft x 1.33ft What I received: Less than 1/3 cord or 39.9 cu ft (calculates to $187) 8ft x 3.75 x 1.33 = 39.9cu ft (with an extremely generous 3.75' - 45" value) The pictures: One shows my rack stacked with the entire delivery. The stackable space in that rack is 8ft x 42". The other photo shows the height with a measuring tape. Remember, with 16" logs, that should be an 8ft wide x 6ft tall stack. Ran across Steve's professional looking website, when searching for this winters firewood. Decided to give him a try. I ordered a cord (not stacked). To my surprise, I received a text and call around 7:00, 3 nights later, that the truck was on its way and expected within 20 minutes. I had to scramble to lay protection on my recently paved driveway and set up lights for the delivery. The next day I stacked the wood and discovered that I received between 1/2 and 2/3rds of a cord. Much of the wood seemed green, so I tested and got many moisture readings over 50%, which does not seem in line with the website that says the wood is cured for 2 years. I texted Steve and received a response that he would "Top off" my wood, that Friday, and deliver this seasoned wood from a different supplier. He apologizing for any inconvenience. I protected the driveway again, that Friday. His guys did not show up with the remaining wood. I texted Steve again. His response was that his delivery truck was in the shop and that he would get remaining wood to me ASAP. After more texts and broken promises, Steve stopped responding to my calls and texts. I've been ordering from Steve Sims for about 3 years now. Every time I have ordered has been an excruciating process. Basically everything you read in the 1 star reviews has been my exact experience: Quoting me a day/time he will delivery the wood, and not show up at all with no warning/email/call/apology. When I reach out to check if something happened or if he'll be late, he always says he'll be there in 1-2 hours, and on most days, he does not show up at all, and says he might be in my area next week. When next week comes, no follow up at all, and business as usual - empty promises, missed delivery days, etc. As someone who works and has young children, It's really hard to put aside an entire day waiting for a shipment that will never come. One time, he showed up at 10pm and started throwing wood from the truck onto my driveway. It was extremely loud - it woke up both my kids from their sleep and the cops also got called on us. As a long time customer, I want to give Steve a good review, and I want to keep purchasing from him. But time and time again, he has proven to be an unreliable business owner. Clean burning, well cured But several issues: 1) he has CONSISTENTLY shorted his delivery by well over 20% vs what he charges. Last one was 80 cu ft vs 128 for a true cord 2) He will be very polite and respond and IGNORE you for his shortfalls 3) You cannot trust his delivery estimated times. Could be tomorrow or next month. 4) He insists on being paid at delivery before it is stacked and calculated. 5) In several years I have told him I will pay more if he over-delivers, but he has always been short. read more

Buying almond firewood in the Bay Area is a lot like buying pot in the 1980's. You get a number for a guy, who is maybe someone's friend of a friend. Sometimes you're lucky enough to get a response. And then you show up with equal amounts of cash and hope. 50/50 you are getting pot that night. I've bought firewood from a different vendor every two years for about the last ten years. I just find who is hot on CL. This guy actually has a website and reviews! My dream in high school was to find a dealer who was concerned about his reputation. Horrible communication, so full of B.S. Wouldn't return any calls to confirm time of delivery until my husband left a message saying he was canceling the order if he doesn't hear from someone soon. Got a text saying they were running a few late. (A few what? Minutes, hours,days? )Would be here around noon. This was at 10am. And the temperature was going to be near 100° today. At nearly 2pm another text came in saying he wasn't coming with some lame excuse. Now tonight my husband said this guy texted him saying he could bring wood tomorrow morning. I want to include myself as a satisfied customer of Steve Sims Almond Firewood. Communications between Steve and myself was started on his website and completed through email. He had an opening for me for delivery on the next day and I took it. The delivery crew showed up as expected and was very courteous and helpful. They delivered my order and then some. This was my first year of consistently burning firewood and I learned a few things I'd like to share. Obviously, it starts with getting good dry wood, of course, but even so, you may have trouble getting it lit. 1) You need good kindling to get the fire up and going quickly. I found some clean kindling at Raley's grocery. I put a couple of kindling sticks at the bottom of the firewood and then after about 15 minutes, I mix it a few smaller pieces to get the heat up. 2) You need a good firestarter. Fatwood works best. You can sit there with just strips of newspaper but you will just be wasting your time. The firewood is dry but it isn't that dry. 3) Get a handheld propane torch to get that hardwood burning nice and hot. At first, I, too, used stick matches and those long fireplace matches with newspaper strips. I didn't have kindling, but I did use the fatwood firestarter, but it took way too long to just get the firestarter lit and the wood burning longer than 15 minutes. The propane torch changed my life. For $3.49 a bottle at home depot and an igniter for about $17, I can get my fire up and hot within 15 minutes. The trick isn't getting a fire started, it's getting the fire hot enough for it to keep it burning for longer than 15-20 minutes. Once it is hot, all you do is feed it with Steve's hard Almond wood and your fire will keep going until you stop feeding it. Mine will last all day once it gets going. Take my advice as you will. Steve's crew delivered enough wood for me to burn until Spring. It's been great these past couple of weeks of having daily hot almond wood heat my house while looking great in the fireplace. read more

He simply falls off the face of the earth for a couple days and no response to any messages. No apology or explanation.
