I read the mixed reviews and decided to move ahead. The online ordering process is efficient. Steve, his son and a helper showed up promptly and delivered and stacked a full cord of almond. Lots of stairs and no complaints. Steve explained the wood had been seasoned for 2 years. Mixture of split logs, branches and all-nighters - first fire, 4 days after delivery and the wood burns great. A cord is 8x4x4 ft and weighs thousands of pounds, varying with the wood species. Some suppliers deliver a "face cord" 8x4x one log. This is a lot more wood than other suppliers have delivered and passed off as a cord. Definitely would buy wood again. read more

FRAUD! I will keep this post up until I hear from him. We have ordered with him for the last 4 years and the last years he's been great. Well this year I wanted to get ahead of the game and order early. They were very responsive and said if I paid venmo I would get a discount. So I sent the Venmo and the wood was to be delivered in August. Here we are in October and I am out the money and still no wood. I've sent numerous emails and called. They keep saying when they are in the area they will deliver. Well as of right now still nothing. I think the next step will have to be the better business bureaus and/or the police. Do not order firewood from this company..we got a cord delivered $415.00..it will not burn! Tried all day long, 2 different fireplaces, 2 different people starting it, it is NOT seasoned! Getting a moisture meter today. Steve was to come 48 hrs ago to switch it out! No call back and they have a fake answering service! Don't return calls. Waited all day yesterday for his arrival. Please read all the bad reviews on Yelp..they are all true. Also, the Better Business Bureau will not recognize him. He has not responded to many customer complaints to the BBB. When we did not hear from him the next week, we followed up and he indicated a delivery on the weekend. They failed to show up, and have not responded to our 6 subsequent emails and multiple phone calls / msgs demanding a refund. To accept payment without delivering and then go silent is not simply a shoddy business practice - it is fraudulent and illegal. I've ordered from Steve Sims for a few winters now and I like the way the wood burns. It seems to be more consistent than other companies we've tried and smokes less. I HATE their non-existent customer service. Every year I brace myself for the inevitable headache of trying to do business with them and every year it somehow gets worse. Come Thursday no delivery and I received a email response apologizing and said it would be delivered the next day. Firewood was not delivered again. I emailed 3 more times without a response back. I've been buying firewood from Steve Sims for 10 years now. When I first moved to the Central Peninsula, I had my fireplace checked out as part of the real estate transaction. The inspector recommended I always use almond firewood, so I started researching local sellers who deliver. I don't go through a lot of wood, but I have purchased from Steve 5 times now. As I did the first time, before every purchase I do my research, and Steve always has the best prices with delivery. The wood he sells is well seasoned, burns long, and gives off a lot of heat. I use it both indoors and outdoors. Like most of these sellers, this isn't a huge operation, so be patient, and you'll get your wood. As long as you don't expect him to be at your beck and call (he does have to drive around a 150 mile radius!), you'll be very glad you planned ahead. This isn't a pizza, it's firewood! Yes, as many reviews have said, there have been times that I expected a delivery that didn't show, but Steve always explained and rescheduled. Today, I just got my wood delivered that I ordered last night after receiving a confirmation email at 1 AM (talk about a hard worker!). To top it all off, if he happens to deliver your wood personally, he's a great conversationalist and all-around nice guy, and his son is clearly a respectful gentleman. He was not able to deliver that week so we decided to wait until we returned to our Sonoma vacation house end of the month. On December 29, we called to tell him we were back. He never replied to our multiple texts or voicemails asking for a delivery date. It is now Jan. 25th and no wood, no call back, no texts, no refund. Do not buy from this company. We are pursuing a refund on Venmo. We requested a refund from the wife Tracy and she did not provide it. We will now sue him in small claims court. read more

Steve never got back to me, like he said he would in his response. Now that the wood has dried out a bit since it was delivered - about 3 months later - it can be burned with some coaxing. And it does seem to burn long, so it's mostly hardwood. Still, the response is pretty bad, and I essentially had to season the stuff myself. read more

I've been ordering from Steve Sims for about 3 years now. Every time I have ordered has been an excruciating process. Basically everything you read in the 1 star reviews has been my exact experience: Quoting me a day/time he will delivery the wood, and not show up at all with no warning/email/call/apology. When I reach out to check if something happened or if he'll be late, he always says he'll be there in 1-2 hours, and on most days, he does not show up at all, and says he might be in my area next week. When next week comes, no follow up at all, and business as usual - empty promises, missed delivery days, etc. As someone who works and has young children, It's really hard to put aside an entire day waiting for a shipment that will never come. One time, he showed up at 10pm and started throwing wood from the truck onto my driveway. It was extremely loud - it woke up both my kids from their sleep and the cops also got called on us. As a long time customer, I want to give Steve a good review, and I want to keep purchasing from him. But time and time again, he has proven to be an unreliable business owner. But worse than that, dealing with him is frustrating, painful, and ends up wasting a LOT of time. I couldn't recommend you to avoid this business strongly enough. Terrible!! read more

I promised Steve I'd write a review. It took a bit of back and forth emails to get the delivery commitment, but once I did so he showed up the same morning. His young son unloaded and stacked the wood. The wood itself is good. The quantity is fine. He loses a star due to the communication back and forth to get the deal done. But his price is better than his local competition. His young son did all the work on delivery and stacking. Steve Senior never got out of the truck. Steve Junior was a very nice young man and did good work. On balance, if you can tolerate the communication, the price is better than the competition. I saved significantly over competitive prices that didn't even include stacking. I would consider buying from Steve again, but if you do, be prepared for some annoying pre-delivery back and forth. read more

Clean burning, well cured But several issues: 1) he has CONSISTENTLY shorted his delivery by well over 20% vs what he charges. Last one was 80 cu ft vs 128 for a true cord 2) He will be very polite and respond and IGNORE you for his shortfalls 3) You cannot trust his delivery estimated times. Could be tomorrow or next month. 4) He insists on being paid at delivery before it is stacked and calculated. 5) In several years I have told him I will pay more if he over-delivers, but he has always been short. read more

He claimed the check bounced and asked to be paid via Venmo (which he earlier claimed he didn't take). Well, the check cleared AND Steve kept both the check and Venmo payments.
