My regular dentist referred me to Compassionate Endodontics for a problem with a prior root canal and crown that was too hard to handle. From the second i walked in, everyone went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. The assistant asked what music i would like to play. I was nervous about the procedure, so i said anything. She chose jazz, which was good. Just before the procedure feeling more comfortable, i chose 80 and 90's alternative. The selection was great, and had a relaxing energy during the procedure. My endodontist was Dr. Mansdorf. She had to drill though roots that were not taken care of during a prior procedure. During the procedure, i smelt the terrible stench of infection draining from the tooth being worked on. The endodontist and assistant did not flinch. They continued to work on the problem. They gave me a local anesthetic. After the initial pinch, they performed the first part of a surprisingly painless root canal. I usually feel pain even during a regular dental procedure. I was so comfortable. I even caught myself twice snoring while the procedure was being conducted. I have a visit or 2 to finish the procedure. This first part was excellent. read more

The first time I saw an endodontist here, Dr. Sara Kim performed a me a very well-executed root canal. My dentist later referred me to Compassionate Endodontists again for a root canal, but Sara told me it didn't require root canal, so she just charged me for the rather large consulting fee, and I paid my dentist the big bucks for capping the tooth. My dentist again referred me to Compassionate Endodontists. When I learned that I required root canal on the same tooth and would have to pay both the Dentist and Compassionate Endondontists to perform the root canal and cap it, respectively, I walked out. I will not pay any dentist and/or endodontist twice for the same tooth. This is not on Dr. Kim, mind you, as she told me that the is the practices policy. Dr. Kaplan did a great job enabling me to keep an upper right rear tooth by performing a very delicate root canal, and partly for that reason my regular dentist was able to just remove and old filling in that tooth and apply a new one - saving me something like 4K for a crown. Kaplan isn't cheap, but his work is excellent (he's done for me twice now) and he saw and worked on me me immediately each time my regular dentist reached out to him. read more

One of the most bizarre experiences I've ever encountered at a dentist or doctors office. They are the complete opposite of compassionate as I was told, I had to be hurt to be helped, which is actually not true at all. I had another endodontist tap and blow air all my teeth, but the tooth and question and use a thing called deductible reasoning. I don't believe their reviews are real. Positive - Dr. Kaplan! Hands down this was the best dental experience ever. I desperately needed a root canal and I'm that weird patient that feels everything and nothing "numbs" the pain. Dr. Kaplan was very patient with me (five shots of novocaine and laughing gas on high) and he was able to perform day one of a two day root canal. The doctor took his time. He used all the necessary equipment to ensure that he got to the root of the problem - pun definitely intended. Two weeks later, he effortlessly conducted the second part of the procedure. His assistants and support staff ensured that I had the best experience. Also he has the best assistants ever - one held my hand during the procedure and another ensured that I was seen and X-rays done before my appointment time. The doctor used top of the line equipment to ensure that he removed all decay! 6 months later his work is still amazing. If you need a root canal done - don't hesitate - he is the best! Negative - Doctor Kaplan referred me to a doctor who was to do my permanent crown. This doctor was the sweetest however, her work was not up to par. Look of the crown- the crown looks horrible. It looks like a fake tooth. There are no groves and it doesn't match my teeth color. additionally the tooth does not fit the root canal. The X-ray shows that there was a space in between the crown and the tooth that had the root canal and as a result I can essentially be in a situation where food becomes trapped under my teeth. Essentially, so the doctor, Dr. Kaplan referred me to was done poorly and must be redone. Another out of pocket cost (after paying this doctor). Price - he's expensive! I'm still paying for this root canal! Although he's expensive he's worth every single penny. If I ever have to have another root canal I'll come back to him. Take away - Doctor Kaplan is the best! If you need a root canal done from a competent and great doctor I highly recommend him. This doctor has the patience of Job and he does amazing work, I've had several root canals done by other dentist so I know what I'm talking about. His staff is courteous and truly wants to help you and make your experience as pleasant as possible. They were very patient with me and did a very through job (it doesn't hurt and indirectly cleared an inner ear infection). I was skittish about have my mouth open with a foreign object that can be used. They continued the work without it and patiently reminded me to open wider. They did so warmly and no frustration in their tone. They actually were exceptionally kind ensuring me that it was okay and to let them know if I needed a break. The additional factor is the office staff. Everyone was warm and welcoming. I was not made to wait except for once. It was a brief wait and the front staff explained why there was a delay. If you are searching for a high-skilled practitioner who is as ethical are they are experienced, look no further than Dr. Steven Kaplan. Had I failed to consult with Dr. Kaplan, I would have been financially responsible for the costs of both root canal therapy and, conceivably, an equally expensive dental crown. For some context, I saw Dr. Kaplan after first consulting with two other board-certified, highly-respected endodontists on the east side about pain in and around one of my molars. These two doctors advised that root canal therapy was medically indicated; and indeed, according to the first endodontist, I -- despite the fact I had thus far in my life developed zero cavities -- was not only apparently on the precipice of losing a tooth, but also, she claimed, might still lose the tooth notwithstanding the performance of a root canal that very same day. Naturally, this caused me a great deal of anxiety, in particular since, by this point, the molar in question had started referring pain to my left temporomandibular joint to the degree that I was rendered unable to open my mouth wide enough to undergo this ostensibly tooth-saving procedure (there were two false starts) In retrospect, this was a saving grace, for shortly afterwards, I consulted with a third endodontist who appeared more experienced in working with reduced openings: Dr. Steven Kaplan. And as it turned out, root canal therapy was not indicated. Dr. Kaplan was the first doctor to correctly attribute my tooth pain to sinusitis, and ultimately, in spite of my insistence he perform a root canal and reluctance to leave his office without having one (so shaken I was by the words of the first endo), Dr. Kaplan refused to perform a root canal. Given that the molar in question did display, inter alia, some demineralization, conceivably, in the context of my symptoms, it would have been so easy for Dr. Kaplan to justify root canal therapy and take my money, yet he did not. He spent 4x as much time with me than the previous endodontists did (so if there's a bit of a wait when you get to the office, trust that it is warranted, and that he does not, in the vein of many others, sacrifice patient care on the altar of profit maximization). Dr. Kaplan, moreover, was extremely kind to me throughout. Should I ever require root canal therapy in the future, he will be my first and only stop. I seldom, if ever, leave reviews-- that should serve as a testament to how STRONGLY I recommend Dr. Steven Kaplan. And though I did not ultimately undergo treatment, judging by the method by which Dr. Kaplan was able to visualize my leftmost molar, the tools at his disposal, and the fact that he apparently takes breaks when performing root canals in cases involving TMJ pain, it is quite clear he is better-equipped than most endos to treat TMD patients, pediatric patients, the elderly, or those with otherwise reduced openings (most endos, it appears, tend to rather liberally advertise themselves online as equipped to do so whether or not they in fact are). read more

I had severe tooth pain for 5 days and finally went to see my dentist who took an x-ray and said that I had no cavities and said that I either needed a root canal or had a sinus infection. She prescribed antibiotics and sent me on my way after booking an appointment with the in-house endodontist for two weeks away. The pain was so bad the next day that I started googling for endodontists who would take my insurance and found Dr. Kaplan. Thank goodness! Pros: - Dr. Kaplan will see you the same day as you call and will do everything he can to get you out of pain as soon as possible. - Nice (and entertaining) staff - Plays music during the procedure (and asks you what you would like to hear) - Doesn't do everything in one visit to give your jaw a break - Works quickly and makes sure you are comfortable and in no pain (he will crack jokes and also tell you what he's doing if that helps for you) - His staff makes sure to utilize your insurance so that you pay as little as possible - Dr. Kaplan texted me and called me after I left after my initial procedure to see how I was feeling (I'm a crier, I can't help it) - Great location (at least for me, I live in Midtown) Cons: - The wait time can be long as Dr. Kaplan is trying to fit everyone is as soon as possible. The first time I went I waited for almost 2 hours. But then the second time I came on the wrong day and he fit me in. So it balances out I guess! I suspected that I needed a root canal re-treatment so after browsing dental options online, I ended up here! My consult revealed that I needed a root canal (not a re-treatment) so I got my second ever RC done right then and there. Dr. Han is AMAZING! She is the perfect blend of professional, interested, friendly, calm and compassionate. I HIGHLY recommend her!! Her dental assistant was great too, as were the receptionists! Dr. H is so good at her job that not only does she prep you for the procedure by explaining the process, but she managed to have me feeling so calm that I SLEPT THROUGH MY ROOT CANAL! I arrived on time for my 1pm appointment, but wasn't brought into the exam room until 126pm even though it took me less than 10 minutes to complete new patient paperwork. I was out at 315pm so had I been seen closer to the start of my appointment time I would have been back to my desk by 3pm which is what I planned for. I completely understand how appointments work so I'm not deducting any stars for that, just mentioning it for others who may be on a time crunch. Dr. Han was aware of my time crunch and was diligent about my procedure so I especially appreciate that. I honestly can't say enough great things about my experience with her! After writing my prescription she jotted down her cell number and told me to contact her with any questions or concerns. I have NEVER had a doctor do that! That's the care and service I've been looking for! My only wish is that she practiced general dentistry so I could see her for all of my dental needs! I have been his patient for almost 2 years now and wouldn't trust anyone else to perform a root canal on my teeth. I originally went to Dr. Kaplan for an emergency appointment as I was in a good deal of pain and my regular dentist felt the root canal was too complex for her. Dr. Kaplan got me out of pain quickly and followed up with me several times after the procedure to make sure I was feeling ok. I subsequently have needed 2 other root canals and he had performed those as well without any problems. I had an amazing experience with Dr. Lisa Tran! It is so scary when I heard that I need a root canal. I was so worried about the pain and also the cost!!! My dentist referred me to do it at Compassionate Endodontics. The practice is very clean and pretty. The purple color really calms me down. With my insurance, they paired me with Dr. Tran. She talked me through the whole procedure and how much I need to pay before the procedure to put my mind to ease. I was so terrified of getting my first root canal I could barely remember my own husband's name. However! I had NOTHING to be nervous about. Read my review if you want to read that one review that helps you decide who to choose..He deserves every star from every review. (Im writing this review 8 hours after my root canal). Let me start by providing some brief context. My tooth has had a root canal (5 years ago but obviously a failed one), and 3 fillings in my lifetime, since i was 10 to my current ripe 33 years. My canals were calcified, i had had random jaw pain, swelling of my gums on the side of the affected tooth, and swelling of my preauricular lymph gland. Needless to say the tooth was also pretty infected. Before knowing all of this, i left a message on the phone number provided to book an apt online. Dr Kaplan called me himself at 9pm on a Saturday. Just that should be enough to differentiate him. I couldnt see him right away as i was traveling to San Francisco, but he listened to the history of the tooth, offered his thoughts, and said he would recommend someone in SF if needed. He kept in touch with me and when i got back offered me an appointment on a day he normally would not see patients (i wasn't aware of that until his assistant mentioned it during the procedure). My procedure started at 11am and finished at 3:30pm, Dr Kaplan is committed to getting the job done as good as possible, and as long as you are comfortable to be there. I'm incredibly grateful and blown away for that kind of care and attention. Dr Kaplan and his assistant make you feel very comfortable, I found myself laughing as if with my close friends. (SIDENOTE - who the hell gets the giggles when you're in a chair of anyone working on your teeth?!) He took his time so he could do the best job, as my canals were calcified and needed discovery. So i got scanned, and using incredible software he was able to calculate where to find my original canal passages and thus medicate/treat the infection. He called to follow up at 10pm tonight (he had asked when would be a good time to check in before i normally go to bed). Obviously, i don't know if my tooth will be salvaged yet, as it takes time for the medication to work etc, however i was so blown away by the whole experience with him that i had to write a review in the case someone was deciding, like i was, whether to go to someone without insurance or wait for insurance. Dr Kaplan is a rarity among medical professionals. When you read statements describing Doctors and their 'attention to detail' or 'level of care' in my experience 80% is BS, 19% they somewhat care, and then 1% would be Dr Kaplan. So.... crazy story. Less than 48 hours before our wedding my husband and I found ourselves in the hospital with him in major tooth pain and 1/2 of his face swollen 2X it's normal size. This was a Saturday evening and our wedding was early on a Monday of the holiday weekend. At about 1am (now Sunday morning) we found out from the ER docs that it was definitely his tooth and he was going to need an emergency root canal, but wait... it's a holiday weekend and the adjacent dental school (who they would have suggested do the procedure) was closed until Tues. after the holiday, so it was suggested to me that I better start googling for an emergency endodontist ASAP! (I still find it funny that the ER at a top hospital told me to do this...). That's when I happened upon Dr. Kaplan and boy am I thrilled to have called him. I must have left voicemails for about 5-7 different places and Dr. Kaplan is the ONLY doctor to call me back. I got one other quickly returned call from a messaging service saying their docs couldn't see us until Tues and later Sunday another call returned, but that was too late. Dr. Kaplan called me back at 3am and said to call back in the morning (presumably 9am when he opens) to confirm that he could in fact take my husband at 11am. I did call at 9 and we were there at 11! We ended up having to wait in the office for over and hour and my husband waited quite some time for every follow up appointment, but it's hard to really complain about that. Dr. Kaplan was responsive and professional. He know's his nitch with ER services and he provides them well. He was also very attentive with check-up calls post appointments. THANK YOU!! My husband was able to get his emergency root canal under 24hrs before our wedding and even though he was still swollen in pictures and had some residual pain, he was super happy he didn't wait until Tues. I was thrilled as well. While my husband honestly said that the procedure and follow ups didn't hurt much the overall price tag did hurt quite a bit. This is expected though for emergency services in NYC. All things considered paying a premium price was worth it since we didn't have to postpone our beautiful wedding. :) read more

I was in pain and needed to see someone fast. They were going to squeeze me in the next day, but due to my schedule I had to wait an extra day. They called me the next day to check how I was feeling! I was not a patient yet and they cared enough to check up. Dr. Kaplan was great. No root canal is fun but he made it tolerable. He was sensitive to any discomfort and tried to make me as comfortable as possible. My tooth had thin canals and an extra hidden canal making things more complex and required 2 visits, but there was no change in cost. I don't know where to start. I woke up one day and my mouth was swollen and the next day it wasn't any better. Looks like I'm the only one who had a horrible experience with one of the doctors who works here, but I still feel so unfair about this experience so I write this review. I went to Dr Kaplan's dentist years ago based on the great review. I thought I was booked with Dr Kaplan himself but they arranged my appointment with another younger doctor named David. I had very weak teeth since I was a kid, and easily get cavities even tho I brush my teeth 3 times a day. It's my family gene. I wanted to get a root canal on one tooth which had a bad pain but he tried to convince me to get worked on another tooth which I knew it wouldn't be saved and needed to get implant eventually. I told him about it but he didn't listen and told me how bad I maintained my teeth and that I was "wasting everybody's time and money". I felt SO uncomfortable, but he kept going on and ended up doing a root canal on the another tooth (not the one I wanted to get fixed). At the end, he said "Ok, I couldn't save this teeth and you need an implant" then charged $1000 for it. I paid $1000 and couldn't even get a treatment on the tooth that I originally wanted to fix then he messed up another tooth that just left me a lot of pain. I couldn't find a separate Yelp page for Dr. Hossein Moosavi, but he is in the same office here. I am so thankful for their team today. I came home from a mid-day walk and my jaw was killing me. Knowing my history of a previously cracked tooth and crown from 2014, I knew it was something more than TMJ. Anyways, ended up I needed a root canal, and the staff fit me in on a Saturday evening. Called at 4:30pm, got a 5pm same day appointment and was out by 6:30pm. The assistant was so concerned about taking radiographs with my level of pain and offered to get me numbed up before, and Dr. Moosavi assessed my tooth, looked at the radiograph and gave me a plan. He was so gentle when performing the nerve block which got me almost immediate relief, and then saw his originally scheduled patient. He was so thorough and explained the plan again, did his thing with a high powered microscope and draping around the tooth, then explained the results, and follow up. He walked me to the front desk for check out, and gave me discharge instructions.
