He's super prompt with his replies (even before actually physically meeting him), which was a big deal for us. The communication during the whole planning process was so comforting during a stressful time for many brides and grooms. 2. When my husband and I had our initial consultation with Steven, his lively and fun personality made us feel so comfortable. We let him know what our style was and what our focus was for the wedding, etc. I liked how Steven really listened and took into consideration all our expectations for the wedding. 3. The wedding day itself also went super well. We couldn't be happier with Steven (and a shout-out to Carmen his secondary photographer)! I was so nervous when we first started with all the "getting ready photos" and "first looks" and Carmen was just so sweet and comforting toward me. During the reception, I remember by the time my husband and I were going around the tables to take pictures with our guests and toast them, I was soooo exhausted that I wanted to give up on pictures. But just seeing how much energy Steven still had and how he was giving me "Come on, keep going!" look really motivated me to just keep the same spirit. At the end of the wedding night, I really appreciated both Steven and Carmen coming up to us just to make sure we got all the pictures we wanted for the night. 4. When we got the pictures back, we were stoked. Steven was able to capture the awkward, the silly, the emotions, and the FUN. We couldn't be happier with how things have turned out. If there's one thing I abhor about formal events, its the cheesy photographs that come with it. Seriously, like what the eff? Do you really need to pose like that? Do I really want to see you do a cutesy kiss? Do you know how unflattering that dress is when you do that weird pose? And what the hell are you going to do with engagement photos!?! ARRGGGH. WHY ARE YOU RILING ME UP OVER PHOTOGRAPHS!?!? Fortunately, Steven Lam totally GETS THIS and can shoot your event or wedding without the cheesy touch or photoshop filtering. He likes to focus on capturing the moment with candid shots that are still beautifully done. There's no color retouching or weird filters or fake blurring or like when those awful greeting cards where everything in the picture is black & white except for the single red rose they're holding or whatever. This review has been long overdue. My husband originally hired Steven and Carmen to photograph our wedding in 5/2012. When I was looking for a photographer, what was most important to me was to be able to "own" my own images. Steven's pricing was extremely reasonable for his expertise and images. He does editorials and celebrity shoots; I was surprised by his prices after our meeting. When we met with him, we knew immediately that he would be our photographer. We had met with another great photographer and thought it would be a difficult decision but we got along really well with Steven. Other highlights (because I could write a short essay on why Steven and Carmen are amazing): - Punctual. I'm Asian. I love punctuality. - Love Carmen. She really puts you at ease. There was one big mistake made by another vendor and I was extremely upset (an understatement) and Carmen was really sweet. I've never forgotten that. - Candids are his forte. His action pictures are so vibrant and they truly capture the energy and emotion of an event. We loved them and the pictures so much that we hired them again to photograph our son's first birthday. Again, extremely professional and personable. They're not the types to just sit and let the time go by; they work every second that they are there. One thing I will say is that it does take awhile to get your images. You will wait. That's because Steven is a perfectionist and really cares about giving you beautiful pictures. I don't mind waiting for quality so it's more than worth it to me. Ultimately though, you get more than your money's worth with Steven. I LOVED working with Steven. When I was planning my wedding, I looked through a lot of photography websites and found Steven's blog by chance. There was something very natural yet composed about his photos, like he has an intuition that knows exactly where to point his camera without being too fussy about it ... I was immediately hooked! Working with him is fun too. He is focused and professional, and razor sharp when it comes to figuring out where he needs to be at any given moment. But he's also very relaxed, which is SO important on your wedding day! I also liked that he gives just the right amount of direction so that you'll look GREAT, but not posed... things like "Why don't you guys walk toward that wall facing the ocean?" or "That was cute, do it again so I want a picture of that!" The icing on the cake actually came afterwards. Steven reached out to me a week after our wedding, and explained he hadn't captured our ring shot during the wedding. If you're looking for a photographer, just go to Steven's website and end the search. My husband and I knew that we wanted to work with Steven for our wedding photography as soon as his website page loaded on our screen. His portfolio is gorgeous! We were really looking for a photographer that would capture the moment, and Steven's candid and artful photos were exactly what we were looking for. No amount of words can convey how spectacular his photos are - just take a look yourself. So once we knew (from the plentiful pictorial evidence) that the photos would turn out great, all that was left was to understand Steven's working style, price, and terms. And that's where Steven really amazed us. After talking to so many wedding vendors who are trying to squeeze all the money out of you they can, Steven was fun to talk to and never tried to up-sell us anything. As an example, it was important to us to get the full-size digital files of all our photos so that we could use them as we like to make large prints, projects, posters, etc. without having to go back to the photographer for them. If you've done any wedding photography research, you'll know that it's hard to find a photographer willing to fork the full-size files over at all, and if you do it'll cost you your firstborn. For Steven, it's STANDARD. His pricing consists of a very professional hourly fee that includes pretty much everything. And he's straightforward about how it all works, take it or leave it. We loved that! No hidden costs, no haggling, no heavy-handed suggestions to sign-up for four sets of parents/grandparents photobooks. Now that you know that Steven's artistic and business sense are great, what could be left to say? As if all that weren't enough, Steven really cares about his customers. We changed our plans multiple times regarding our wedding, and through it all Steven was patient and worked with us on our ideas. And even when on the day of our portrait shoot I got full-blown stomach flu and shamefully cancelled at the very last minute, he didn't even bat an eye. He just helped us re-schedule, never charged us for cancelling, and just wanted me to wait until I was feeling well and happy to take the photos. When we finally did take our photos, they turned out even more beautiful than I had hoped. I half-thought that there was no way our photos would come out as good as the other photos in his portfolio because let's face it, my husband and I are just not as model-glamorous as some of the other people Steven has shot. Steven had reassured me that a good photo is just about letting your feelings come through and being natural. He was so right. I've always been hyper-critical, as a lot of women are, of any photo I'm in. But Steven has some kind of photographic magic (paired with the amazing hair and make-up skills of Theresa Huang). I never thought I could look so good. And I've gone from never putting up photos of myself to papering my office with Steven's photographs. I heart Steven and you will too! While I have not actually worked with Steven yet, I'm so confident in his skills (from his online portfolio) that we went ahead and booked him sight unseen! There must be a reason he has the reputation as the photographer that photographers use - I want to see the master in action! To be fair, I've known about his work and been a fan for a number of years now so when it came time to look for a wedding photographer, he was the natural choice. I spoke with him and emailed him a number of times and it has all been very pleasant. He has great follow through without being pushy. Plus, we were lucky to catch the early bird special discount. Can I just say how pleasant Steven is to work with? Polite follow up emails confirming our location for the shoot, a reminder email about the day light saving time, and a preview photo a week after the shoot (specially requested by me to confirm quality of the makeup). He was quite accommodating to a bride who kept changing her mind (and couldn't make up her mind) for a photo shoot location. Of course, I loved the fact he was willing to provide suggestions but also open to trying a new place he's never been to. Steven and Carmen are such a dynamic duo team. I might be jumping the gun a bit since we haven't seen our wedding day photos yet but the experience of working with the two of them was great. We decided to go with Steven Lam and his wife Carmen (as our second photographer) for our August wedding. When I say they were absolutely amazing they were AMAZING! It goes without saying that their work is great capturing both the natural and composed images with great color and depth, but what I definitely want to mention is how much there customer service and attitude stood out amongst all other vendors involved in the wedding. On a budget, I was my own wedding planner and had to deal with everyone's different personalities on all days leading up to the wedding as well as the wedding day itself. I experienced vendors who couldn't not remember my order, wedding day, and even find our contract one time, but every time I called Steven I was always put to ease when he answered the phone warmly 'Hi Megan!". Even my husband loves him because unlike our other vendors Steven also always remembered to address him by name as well. As a bride and wedding planner, this was an amazing touch. He was always personable, so kind, professional very good about communication on top of his natural skills. I was never concerned and always pleased and even bragging about him as our photographer. I could not have made a better choice! On the wedding day itself, they were on time and worked so well through all of the chaos taking place. His wife who was with me through my who process while Steven joined the grooms party, was like having an angel on my side. She kept me calm and smiling the whole time! I know that this is not in a photographer job description but I cannot explain how grateful I was to have her there the whole time being such a positive voice capturing every moment of joy. We had the honor of having Steven as our photographer for our engagement shoot as well as our wedding (June 2016). He was by far our favorite vendor throughout the entire process and we were extremely impressed by his level of commitment to us and his craft. Beginning with the engagement shoot...Steven gave great suggestions on what makes a good shoot location so it got us thinking. He was open to anything and everything which we appreciated. We ended up choosing a mission in south Orange County which is over an hour away from his location and we were worried about his commute since we were shooting on a weekday and would end around rush hour. He expressed enthusiasm and had zero concerns. We scheduled a time to get the proper sun light and he showed up extra early to do some location scouting which I cannot say enough how much that meant to us and put our minds at ease. He paid for his own entrance since he got there before us and never asked for us to pay him back (but we did!). Steven, you are just an awesome person. During the shoot, he made us feel comfortable, was open to anything we threw at him including our outfit changes and went the extra mile to get the best shots. He was focused throughout the shoot and there was never any rush. In the end, the photos came out great! For the wedding, Steven and his second shooter (his wife! woot!) showed up early again. He was courteous and patient which is a big plus especially with my family being so large and a little crazy to control. I've seen photographers that you can tell get annoyed and Steven was not that type of person. Again, he made us feel comfortable, made it a priority to get the shots we asked for, and delivered amazing photos. He again went above our expectations and gave us all of our photos, both in color as well as in black and white, and delivered them in a custom case. From the initial consultation, we knew in about two minutes that we were going to LOVE working with Steve and Carmen. I have never met anyone that thoroughly enjoys his job as much as Steven. I've never taken the time to write a review on yelp but my experience with Steven was so bad that I felt compelled to write one. First, I would like to say that Steven and Carmen took really nice photos and I am completely satisfied with the pictures themselves. That is where my satisfaction ends. After the wedding, everything went downhill. At first, Steven told us we would receive our pictures 3 months after our wedding. After the 3 months had passed, I started emailing Steven and asked him when we would get our online album/photos. He promised he would get us the pictures by a certain date. After that date passed and our photos were still not available online, I had to haggle him again. He again promised us he would get us the pictures asap. Finally, after another 2 months, we received our online photo album. At that point, Steven said to send him the DVD of the 200 pictures we wanted printed, a service we paid for under our contract. At that point I asked him how long it would take to get the prints back. He said 2 weeks. 2 weeks passed, no pictures. A month passed, no pictures. Two months passed, no pictures. Three months passed, no pictures. I finally called him and spoke with him, expressing my extreme dissatisfaction and disappointment with his service. He told me that he had lost the DVD, that he was sorry, and that he was very busy with a bunch of weddings. He asked me to cull through the thousands of pictures again and re-send him a DVD. Going through the thousands of pictures and picking out 200 is very time consuming. I certainly didn't have the time to do it again so I asked Steven to look for the DVD again. Of course he found it. He just didnt even bother looking. His excuse was that it was filed under my husband's name. Really? You didnt think to check under my husband's name? I was incredulous. Steven apologized and admitted that it was his fault. He offered to give us a free 8 x 10 photo to make up for it. I scoffed at his offer - I really didnt think a photo I could get printed at walgreens for 50 cents was really going to make up for my experience. Once the photo prints came, Steven still didn't deliver as he promised under the contract. He was supposed to deliver it to us in a photo box with a customized insert. My photos were delivered in plastic bags. Again, I had to call/email and haggle. He apologized again and sent the photo box. Finally, almost a year after our wedding, we have received everything we were promised under the contract.
