I'm relieved that he retired, considering his poor choice of staff and money-driven approach. The hygienists were terrible--some of the rudest and most pretentious medical staff I've ever encountered. I started going to this practice as a teenager, and the experience left me with lasting anxiety about dentistry. One of the worst hygienists, I believe named Victoria, told me I had multiple cavities, gingivitis, and even suggested I could develop dementia because of it. Then, Dr. McKane came in and assured me I had no cavities and that everything looked fine. On another occasion, when I asked Dr. McKane about dental bonding to align my teeth, he immediately tried to sell me veneers. He even brought in his son to show me his veneers, saying, "See, I replaced his front four teeth--they look so natural," after I had already declined the procedure. The last time I visited, around age 14 or 15, an older blonde hygienist told my boyfriend that if he smelled anything when he kissed me, it was because I didn't brush my tongue. Not only was this unprofessional and unnecessary, but I was also going through a difficult time and had neglected my hygiene. The staff is great. Dr. McKane not so much. He doesn't introduce himself, he stands behind the chair, hidden. On my second visit to have a veneer re-cemented, he was rude and tried to intimidate me, saying I was lucky he could fit me in, and he had other patients to attend to. And that he wouldn't do this again, that I had to have a crown instead. In fact, I had called several days in advance and told the receptionist there was no sharp edges or pain and I could come in for a regular appointment. She gave me an 8am appointment. I had my teeth cleaned my first appointment, I had the veneer re-cemented on my second appointment.....neither time did I actually see Dr. McKane; when I turned around in the seat he slipped out the back door. I'm not going back because I'm adverse to having a mystery man in my mouth. read more

Please keep in mind that there are two dentistries locates in Mount Airy with very similar names. Dr. Mckane is very experienced and to the point. He gets the job done and is very direct on the continuing care. No sugar coating. Bottom line. Dr. Mckane provides quality service and results. Beautiful and well decorated high quality facility! My family went to Dr. McKane for over ten years, I took my daughter in to have a cavity filled and right before he started to work on her I became ill and asked him to stop that we would have to reschedule, Everything seemed fine until later that day I called back to reschedule and was told that our family was no longer welcome. That Dr. McKane himself told them not to schedule ANY member of our family. There was no indication when we left that there was any problem and they even hoped I would feel better soon. His actions were completely unprofessional. I would choose zero stars if it was an option, terrible practice. read more

Folks in the office were nice enough, but when McKane came in everything changed. he never even took off his mask or came around in front to introduce himself. he just started prodding around. he then went on to criticize my previous dentists work asking if he was even a dentist and if I paid for the work. Completely unprofessional. He refused to work on a touch that was giving me excruciating pain and the reason I came in. they ushered me to the front door and told me to call my other doctor. Had the misfortune of taking my 12 year old daughter to this office where she was subjected to ridicule by one of the hygienists. The hygienists admitted to the office manager after my complaint was lodged, that she did in fact refer to my daughter as having a "jack-o-lantern mouth" and apparently felt it within bounds to inquire about the status of my 12 year olds menstrual cycle. After the tears had cleared from my daughter, I forwarded my concern to the office manager and was assured it would be handled. Fast forward 6 months later to the next appointment, I learn nothing has been handled and that nasty, unprofessional staff hygienist is still a staff member. The office staff had the gull to schedule me (dad) with this vile hygienist for my visit. As I was initially surprised the staff member was still on board, I thought it appropriate to ask her about her comments myself. Expecting an apology as I was informed she was so profoundly regretful to the office manager 6 months prior, I was surprised when she denied everything to me, and called my daughter a liar. Again, this is 6 months after apologizing to the office manager for her actions and admitting she said my daughter's mouth was comparable to a jack-lantern, and providing unsolicited comments about menstrual cycles and how that may pertain to my daughter. While I doubt the office endorses bullying of 12 year children, it cannot be overlooked that they do nothing to truly ensure a safe, relaxing atmosphere for their patients. I have never encountered such an unprofessional office, and would recommend strongly that you bypass this office. I am sure every parent wonders at times, what is going on when you send your child off with a supposed professional. At Damascus Dental in Mt. Airy, you need not wonder anymore as I could not imagine a worse environment for a child. read more

Something strange is happening in this office. Within the last year, All of the GOOD employees have either been let go or quit. He was tolerable as long as quality people were there, but now it is a joke. The front desk seems to not know what is going on and they are now pushing the dentistry on you, trying to sell you veneers and rushing your cleaning appointments. Time to find another dentist! One that cares about their patients, and can keep quality employees. Maybe if they treated them better, they would still be there.............................his assistant is the only one left any of us recognize! She will probable leave soon too, just like the others. read more
