This is the place to go in the DMV if you're looking for a new Yamaha piano…read more We were first-time piano buyers looking for a new U1. From what I read online, most piano dealers will quote an MSRP or "SMP (suggested maximum price)" with the expectation that you will haggle down the price. We went to our local Yamaha dealer [not Downtown Piano Works] and met with a sales associate recommended by our piano teacher. His first offer was already less than MSRP: I'm terrible at haggling, but I figured I'd try anyway and ask for a better price. A day later, he came back with another $500 off the price. I was feeling pretty good about myself and was getting ready to go to the store before his "offer expired." On a whim, minutes before I left, I thought I'd try the next closest Yamaha dealer, which happened to be Downtown Piano Works. I typed a chat message into their website, expecting a canned AI answer. Instead, Dan, the owner, responded right away. He told me to call him on his cell phone, and without hearing the other store's "lowest" price, he quoted a price that was $1500 less. There was no haggling, no wondering if I was getting a worse deal than everyone else on the internet. We drove with the kids an hour to Frederick just to make sure this wasn't too good to be true, and it wasn't. Dan and Theresa opened their store on a Saturday night, three hours after I'd first messaged their website. By the time we left, we were the owners of a new Yamaha U1. If you're in the market for a new Yamaha acoustic piano, within driving distance of Frederick, and want to avoid the usual stress of new piano shopping, I'd definitely try clicking chat on their website.

Anyway, I had to cancel the order a few days later. Refunded me immediately. Honest and trustworthy owners! Thanks and sorry it didn't work out. Great music store!

Believe the care given and attention to climate control throughout the year in this house kept the piano in tune. William and I spoke of the concerns and issues with an 84 year old instrument and asked a variety of questions as to touch, key response, etc. After further discussion we decided to use this time to address those issues. His attention to detail, willingness to answer all questions, and good work made a noticeable improvement in key response/touch. I couldn't be happier with this young man's good work.

I want to be clear up front that the technician who tuned our piano over six months ago did an…read moreexcellent job. The quality of the work itself is not the issue here. My concern is with the way Thompson Tuning handles scheduling and billing. A follow‑up appointment was booked roughly six months in advance - which I did not confirm or accept the invite. After that, I received no reminders, no confirmation request, and no communication about the upcoming date--nothing until a "technician is on the way" message on the day of the appointment. Unfortunately, because there had been no reminders for an appointment made so far in advance, I had not kept that specific date blocked. After I missed the appointment, I was sent an invoice for the **full service fee** of $225 as a no‑show charge. While I understand that businesses need cancellation policies, I think it's unreasonable to hold customers to a 100% fee for a six‑month‑old booking with no reminder or confirmation. In my view, a more customer‑friendly and fair process would include at least one reminder and/or a confirmation request before applying such a steep penalty. Bottom line: - Quality of tuning: very good. - Business process and customer communication: disappointing and out of step with what I'd expect for a $225 service. I would recommend anyone considering Thompson Tuning pay very close attention to the cancellation policy and be aware that you may be charged the full amount for a missed appointment even if it was scheduled months in advance and you receive no reminders.
