I was pretty impressed with the experience I had at Stewart's! First off, thought it was cool that they come to your car to take your order. They also put a tray on your window if you plan on eating in the car. The grilled chicken sandwich I ordered was pretty juicy. I also really enjoyed the milkshake -- they let me combine the chocolate and cookies and cream flavors. I had a bite of my friend's Jersey cheeseburger and it was also delicious! Only thing that was a miss for me was the bacon cheese fries. The fries themselves were meh, and the bacon was a bit chewy and had an overwhelming maple scent. I finally went to Stewart's for the first time. I had to try the famous root beer float it was really good. I'm not really a root beer fan but with the ice cream it was good. For food we got the chicken tenders, waffle fries and a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato and a chili cheese dog. Everything was great, service really good. I use to go to the location in South Amboy as a kid, and today I took my kids to this Matawan location after a baseball game for lunch. They were excited for the old style bar seating and to try a root beer float. This place did not disappoint! It was a nice little place to get an affordable lunch with the kids and I got to have a classic root beer in a frosted mug. It tasted just as good as when I was a kid. A big seller for me was the kids meals come with an ice cream.... That's perfect and the kids loved the extra treat. We definitely will be back. read more

Went in today after driving by for years. I tried the burgers and cheese steak. Burger had really good flavor and pretty large for the price. The cheese steak perfectly encompassed what the place was inside as a classic flavor with no frills. When it came time to pay, I accidentally gave the waitress/cashier the wrong amount of money, and instead of communicating this like a normal human being she just held up all the bills in front of me and said nothing with a judgmental expression... like girl, we are adults, act and communicate as such. Love this spot! It's one of the last drive up locations I can find in NJ and that makes me sad. I used to come here all the time when I was little with my dad and it brings back great memories. I was super happy to see so many kids there with their parents and grandparents. I took my boyfriend after raving about it for so long. I got a cheeseburger, he got a veggie burger (which I love that they offered!) and we shared a hotdog and of course we both got root beer! Anytime I come to NJ in the summer I'll be sure to stop by. I led a small cycling tour through Matawan. The manager of Stewart's Root Beer, Chrissy, extended us the courtesy of reserving a couple of her outdoor covered tables for our group. She had a great positive attitude and really went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Chrissy even brought out giant mugs of ice water for us when we arrived! That was very welcome on that pleasant sunny day after some miles on the Henry Hudson Trail. The food here is delicious. I had a cheeseburger and shared a number of side dishes with the group: Onion rings, zucchini strips, mozzarella sticks, mushroom poppers, and probably others that I've forgotten. Now all this stuff was in the fried fast food group so of course it was heavy and greasy (duh), but it was nicely cooked, not overly greasy at all, and if I thought my arteries and BMI could take it I would have eaten more and would return frequently. Although I thought my single cheeseburger was on the small side all the other meal portions (the sandwiches and wraps and everything else I saw getting consumed at our tables) looked pretty big and satisfied even the, um, larger people in our group. I especially enjoyed the onion rings! There is plenty of parking and the Henry Hudson Trail (a paved cycle and pedestrian path) runs right behind the restaurant. The main seating area is adjacent to Route 79 which while only one lane in each direction can be busy with fast-moving motor vehicles so is a bit noisy. There is seating inside at the counter, and there are additional uncovered tables in the outdoor area in the back behind the building and the HHT which are quieter. There are clean bathrooms in the back. Stewart's is head-and-shoulders better than any of those heavily advertised chain restaurant woopie-burger type places so if you want to get a hit of burger and fries or other things in that food group, this is the place to go. If you're driving by, stop for a bite. If you're cycling the HHT and need to carbo load, there's no better place to fuel up. Thanks, Chrissy! read more

I will go 4 stars. 2 for bringing back memories of my youth going to a Stewart's with my Dad and older brother. I came here earlier right before closing on a Sunday night. The wife and I split a California burger, cheese fries and if you go to Stewart's you have to have the root beer float. This is cheap comfort food and our order came out pretty quickly. They have tables outside which would be nice on a sunny afternoon and a small counter with approximately 10 to 12 stools inside. Our waitress was very outgoing and friendly even though it was 30 minutes to closing. Would definitely try to come back when going down the shore next Summer. read more

I've been going for over 30 years. It was a summers staple with my family when I was young- and I still swing by at least once a season now. The frosty mug of repot beer is a must- of course. The classic hot dogs can't be beat- I think the buns really make them what they are. The onions rings are top notch- the onions are sweet and nice and soft. The new "fat" sandwiches are a nice addition to the classic menu. We got the Stewart's Belly Buster- a chew steak with mozzarella sticks, fries and chicken fingers- it's a BIG sand which so I suggest splitting it with someone and still getting a hot dog on the side :-) read more

I have drove by Stewart's Root Beer in Matawan hundreds of times but I have never stopped there. I am not sure why because I am certain that I have made a mental note to go there every time I drive by. It might just be the location on a road that runs parallel to the main business strip in Matawan - Aberdeen. I have stopped at other Stewart's and I have been disappointed but not this one. It still has car hop service and since the weather is nice there are 4 tables in front to sit and eat. I got a jumbo Italian Hotdog and a root beer and it came to under $6. At first I was thinking I needed to order fries but the hotdog was stuffed with potatoes that it would have been a waste. Next time I am going to make sure I get one of the floats and try the spicy fries. Now I have alternative to the Wind Mill. read more

My wife and I love going there and sitting outside on a cool sunny day. The charm I feel is that most of the building is original from the 1950's along with some of the round tables which appear to be vintage. Obviously we get those large chilled mugs of root beer. On a recent Friday evening we both got a pair 1/3 pound California cheese bugers which were delicious along with chili fries and jalapeño poppers. Food and service awesome.
