Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The new location within the Bell Works Chicagoland campus is a thing of beauty. The design aesthetic is what you would expect from a high end brand like GNO and the best part is that they make it feel inviting and like home. Just like at home, we kicked off the evening in the kitchen area greeting friends and ordering drinks. I really liked that we had the option to cater food through a GNO catering partner or coordinate a pot luck amongst our friends. The hosts were amazing and it was an honor to have the man, the myth, the legend Alex live and in person with us! I am not the type to break out a board game for fun, but my friends and I agreed that GNO is on a different level and has a game to meet the knowledge, interest and physical ability of every player. 2 hours of fun, games and laughs flew by and each of our friends who attended for the first time were raving about their evening and how they were planning to tell their friends, family, and employers about GNO. It is obvious that the owners (Brandon & Aaron) have dedicated their time and talent to curating a unique experience that brings families and friends together. If you are interested in a game night but don't want to go through the hassle of hosting, GNO to the rescue!

First, let's start with the positives, because I believe in balance. The facility? Beautiful. Clean, modern, very "we spent all the budget on aesthetics and vibes." Walking in, you feel like you're about to be on a legit game show--lights, setup, energy... I was ready to win money I was never going to receive. And then... the games started. Now listen. I don't expect Jeopardy! level hosting, but I do expect the host to understand the rules of the games they are... hosting. At one point, I genuinely thought we were all part of a social experiment to see how long a group of adults could pretend to understand instructions that absolutely no one understood--including the person explaining them. There were multiple moments where I locked eyes with my friends like: "Are you getting this?" "No." "Is she getting this?" "Also no." Honestly, I was about this close to politely walking over, grabbing the tablet, and saying, "Don't worry, I got it from here--let's all learn together." Because the energy was giving substitute teacher on their first day with no lesson plan. We spent half the time playing the games and the other half trying to decode what the hell we were supposed to be doing. It was like escape room logic... except we weren't trying to escape, we were trying to understand basic instructions. That said, we laughed A LOT--but not always for the reasons they intended. So if you're looking for a night of fun, confusion, teamwork, and questioning your listening comprehension skills... this is your spot. Would I go back? Yes... but next time I'm bringing a whistle, a clipboard, and stepping in as co-host.

They represent what I feel about Lombard: energetic, multi-talented, and best of all hardworking and creative in so many ways! During our fundraisers (Book Sale and Film Festival) I have taken our brochures to promote the event (we do all the work and as a NP, we give the money away to girls who graduate from local high schools and going on to C.O.D.) During my rounds, the stops that I make find the shop's merchants open to posting and very friendly about it! Along the way, because my grandson (10) is a budding magician, I always stop at the very fun and exotic Magic Shop. The person who is always there is magical himself. He shows the magic to me in the range of what my grandson might like. This week, I finally managed to get my grandson to this magial paradise on his way to his piano lesson there in Lombard!! He was literally spellbound and I had already told him about the fortune teller (for only a quarter) that was there which he had to try right away!! After that, the magical person patiently waited while my never-quick-to-make any decision, selected one and true to form the magical person performed this trick for us and then, in a truly magical moment, just gave it to my grandson. He was so excited that he had to work it on his beguiled grandmother and then his piano teacher was his next willing victim. I'm not big on animal skeletons or skulls (though if you want a stuffed plush kangaroo with a real skull popping out of the face, he's got it), but I do like rocks and he's got some lovely ones - small to medium affordable spheres in various minerals, including some nice chakra sets; little carved animals; hearts, worry stones, marble-sized pendants, etc. He's also got a nice selection of runestone sets and tarot cards, plus a selection of Ouija boards and some little blue evil eye bracelets. The owner is personable and is happy to talk about his stock; I can see how he'd be great with crowds when he puts on his magician hat. The medical oddities were interesting (old patent medicine bottles; sets of what I assume were fake teeth?, x-rays). And if I ever need to buy a tranparent skull filled with what appear to be pickled embryonic rats, I know where to go.

For years we've been attending Stewpendous Productions, geeks who drink, Whaddayaknow, and others. The hosts are engaged, entertaining, involved. The woman hosting last night at Ridgeville was checked out. She never introduced herself. She rattled off the rules so fast we had to ask people next to us how to play. She sat twirling her hair, yawning, and doing crosswords puzzles on her phone. When people went to her with questions she didn't even look up or say a word, she simply pointed at her screen. During halftime she left for 10 minutes. Other trivia companies use hosts that participate. They are invested. They interact with the audience. This person simply read questions out loud. That's all she did, and not even very well at that. She was mostly garbled and didn't check to see if everyone heard. When she announced the standings she didn't say what place the teams were in. So when she announced team X had 31 points...so what? Is that 10th place or 3rd place? No idea. We had trouble with the app so we tried to use the paper sheet but she mentioned she doesn't look at those, so we struggled with the app the entire evening. We told her we were having trouble but she didn't seem to care. Way to feel welcome. She never asked if anyone needed questions repeated. So many people had to walk up to her and ask. My team had to go up several times and each time she looked annoyed at being interrupted from her crossword puzzle, while begrudgingly pointing at her screen. We all agreed we will not be back. And will be wary of attending any Pub Trivia USA events in the future. Too many other trivia companies in the Chicago area that we know are entertaining. Hosts that introduce themselves, that read and engage the audience, that act as if they're part of the experience and not simply reading off a screen. What a shame.
