We found out it's a sister location to the Murphys in Wrigleyville, but this was much more of a pub than murphys. Went on St Patrick's day. The atmosphere was great, the corned beef and cabbage was very good! The meat and cabbage were well done and it was a good portion. The bread pudding was outstanding..my favorite part of the meal! Service was frantic-but it was packed with celebrating customers. The music was a nice touch......why not 5 stars? Because we, like many customers that day, had a child with us. The children's 15$ menu gave us 2 chicken nuggets and a handful of lukewarm fries. No drink, no dessert, just the nuggets and fries. This is the ultimate place to go in Chicago if you love Irish pubs. It's got everything - a good dining area, a bar area, live music, a shop for Irish products, and an upstairs room with a bar that can be used for events, plays, and more. I've had their fish and chips in the past -- wonderful. This most recent time, I got the Guinness onion soup with Irish soda bread and a sausage roll. The onion soup had real depth of flavor (and a combination of Swiss and Irish cheddar cheese). The sausage roll had a nice crispy roll, hearty sausage, and a mustard that will clear out your sinuses. We came on a Friday to hear the live music, and honestly that's the only reason I felt like I should dock one star (nothing to do with the performers at all). Definitely recommend, but be aware that the music is LOUD. You will be shouting just to talk to the person right in front of you/order drinks. Still a 3 star place. This visit I tried award winning whiskey BBQ ribs as an entree. They weren't award winning or whiskey BBQ'ed. They were solid but not mind blowing and no whiskey to taste in the sauce. My hubby had the dish n chips which he enjoyed. Curry sauce is also tasty. I know my way around a Chicago Irish Pub or two. I've been blessed to be intimately associated with one for the past few decades. I cut my teeth there and learned my way. A good Chicago Irish saloon is a public house, a place of comfort where people from all walks of life meet, eat, drink and socialize. I've been to Mrs. Murphy's once in the past for an event. To my shame, I have never tried their food. In may business I talk with people from all walks of life near and far, locals and tourists. A native Chicagoan I pride myself on recommending the best our city has to offer and Mrs. Murphy's is among those very best. I will never miss out on going here again and it will surely be on my top five list of places one must go in our city. Upon entering the foyer is beautifully grand. You feel as if you're in an Irish grocer. The offerings from the front door range from fine chocolates and candies to edible items you cannot easily come by elsewhere locally. Not already hungry? The first ten feet will cause this to happen. The decor is fine! Like old school Chicago architecture that harkens back to the old days, when neighbors would turn up in droves hoping to procure a seat within this saloon and restaurant. It simply has that Chicago feel you don't get in many establishments anymore. The ornate wood and the rooms are stunning really. Large, airy and wide open with a center bar that rivals most I've been in. I mean really, it's so beautiful and tastefully decorated that you may not realize people can actually get pretty loaded in here. Our server, a young guy who has been here about six years I think he said, was really a big part of this place. It's obvious why he's been here for some time. He knows his business and the menu really well, going in to describe what he liked most and had answers for all my questions. When I inquired about a choice between the Irish Breakfast; a personal favorite, and the Beef and Guinness Stew he said it was a tough choice but that the Stew was out of this world. I went with it. Admittedly, I'm a pain in the ass when it comes to ordering. I can't make up my mind ever. The larger the menu the more interesting the offerings the more of a pain I am. But to his credit he put up with me and steered me down the right path. The Guinness Stew was a large bowl with a heaping amount of thick savory brown gravy stew chock full of beef, chunks of carrots and baby potatoes. In the center of this beauty was a nice helping of mashed potatoes to mix in with your stew to or eat around it if you so choose to. Mixing mine in made it even creamier than it already was. Though I'me sure the Stout didn't hurt the creamy flavor a bit. It just made it that much more legit. The amount of beef in this stew is awesome. I mean, in anyone's stew you usually get a handful of beef but in Mrs. Murphy's Guinness Stew you won't go one spoonful without a chuck of tender beef in your spoon. WOW I can't say enough about this dish! My Guinness Stew was accompanied by a side of Irish Brown Bread. Really good brown bread and I know brown bread. It had flavor and was moist unlike so many dried out brown breads. Truly delicious with a dab of butter. There was some 'HP Sauce' in the condiment rack, I'm not sure what is was, a bit like steak sauce but different and better. I took the liberty of alternately dipping my brown bread in it and the stew. I'm weird that way I suppose. I was so intensely concentrated on my bowl of Guinness Stew I completely ignored my buddy and kept my mouth full while he did most of the talking. I forgot what he had, really, but he said it was pretty damn good. I did try his chips and yeah, they were pretty damn good. I truly enjoyed Mrs. Murphy's and Son's for several reasons. The service A+, the decor very well thought out, old school and memorable. The offerings outstanding. But one of my favorite things was that the patrons were of all ages and backgrounds, neighborhood folks and travelers from other neighborhoods as well. I guess it's been around for just shy of 20 years but it seems like it's been a part of the neighborhood since the beginning. Walk around, take in the decor and it's 2nd floor, it has stories to tell. I'm sure you can tie one on in this place and I'm sure they've asked their fair share to come back tomorrow after a few too many but you don't get that vibe here. To the contrary, it's an establishment I would have no problem bringing my kids. While my buddy had a few beers I myself am a non drinker so it can be hard to find a place that is a saloon AND a restaurant with food and ambiance as good and better than the spirits they serve. I guess I'm spoiled a bit by my association with my home Chicago Irish Pub. It, like Mrs. Murphy's is old, iconic, and original Chicago. It's difficult to find a place like that. The restaurant is warm and inviting, service is always good, and there's usually live music playing, which is awesome. I have found the food to be hit or miss, but the beef Guinness stew is incredible: highly recommend! There's also a fantastic selection of British grocery items for sale which is just delightful. My husband and I have always been huge fans without ever setting foot in the restaurant because they are at every street fest in the neighborhood. They kill it at Ribfest!!!!! Imagine our surprise when we had the opportunity to eat here and came out disappointed. The food is visually beautiful, but it just wasn't prepared properly. My chicken thighs were so over cooked that as I tried to cut it it flew off my plate! My husband kept saying "the ribs aren't as good. They just aren't as good!" The space upstairs looks like it's meant for big events, like weddings or the real estate class we attended. Big floor to ceiling windows and dark wood tables. I think the menu changes pretty often, because the bone marrow dish pictured was not offered when we visited last week. Also, Murphy's stout wasn't offered either - I was very sad about that. Our party of 4 normally gets together the week before St Patrick's day, as an old person tradition (I'm 40 and over paying cover charges for a holiday that attracts amateur drinkers). This year, our friends had a babysitter challenge, so we ended up having our traditional dinner out the week after the big holiday. As a precaution, I made reservations. Walking in, I realized that I didn't have to do that, but it's always better to on the safe side. Table service was efficient - nothing spectacular. The Irish Beef Stew was a hit! I had the burger - also good, but super big. As a caveat, I did have like 3 Guinness-es before dinner arrived. After dinner, we made our way to the bar (there was live music, just a dude and his guitar). The bartender in no way made his way to our table or to us when we walked up to order. Maybe he doesn't depend on tips (which is great that the pub is paying a living wage) but damn, bro. Where is the hustle? Even if the majority of your paycheck isn't dependent on tips, you are still in the hospitality industry. We would have stayed longer and spent more money had we felt at all taken care of. read more

Some girlfriends and I walked over for their Irish breakfast in the Beforetimes. We were slightly hungover and ready for some salty goodness. The scrambled eggs, soft brown bread with butter, and baked beans checked my stomach's checkboxes that morning. That's all I really wanted--well, that and a couple of Irish coffees to wash everything down. I have to say that the Irish coffees were strong. Like, surprisingly strong. Like, this-is-a-bad-idea strong. Kudos, for not skimping on the Irish part of that coffee! Also, I asked that my scrambled eggs be cooked so that they're dry. I can't eat wet/moist scrambled eggs, even if I'm not slightly hungover. I know I roll the dice whenever I ask for that at a restaurant, because there's a fine line between dry and browned or burnt. I'm happy to report that my scrambled eggs came out on my plate without any unneccessary wetness! Thank you to chef. The inside of the bar feels like a classic old-time Chicago bar. The detail in the original woodwork is exquisite, so definitely take notice of it. The restroom was small, but pretty clean. And the service was attentive. We sat in a room that was long and narrow and set up for large parties. (remember, this was in the Beforetimes.) Other areas of the bar were set up with TVs to enjoy the sports. Noticed their sign advertising their happy hour specials upon our exit. We'd like to go back after Covidtimes to catch up with each other while enjoying happy hour drinks and snacks. read more

We went to Mrs. Murphy's last night for dinner I ordered the Corned Beef & Cabbage, the two other people ordered the ribs one 1/2 and full order. We ordered drinks before dinner, I ordered a Dewar's White Label Scotch and was told by the server that they didn't have Dewar's which surprised me considering it's a very popular scotch. The server mentioned a few scotches that were available so I ordered the Glenfiddich Scotch and the server asked me if I wanted a 1 oz or a 2 oz pour, that struck me as an odd thing to ask because I have never been asked that question before. Well I ordered the 2 oz on the rock (a huge ice cube). When the food came I was a little disappointed with my meal, for openers the corned beef was a little skimpy compared to the photo listed on the Yelp website, it also had red cabbage and boiled potatoes, my plate had a single scoop of mashed potatoes and green cabbage not even close to what was on the Yelp photo. I'm surprised they served mashed potatoes with the Corned Beef, that was a first for me at least they should ask the person if they wanted mashed or boiled potatoes. On the other hand one person ordered a 1/2 order of ribs that was a good size and the other person ordered the full slab of ribs which was a good size as well with a generous portion of fries. I had a Black & Tan to drink with my meal which was very good, the two other people had Harp. Although the food was good I wish they would have served the Corned Beef Plate like the one in the Yelp photo. I didn't want to make a fuss about it because I was a guest and not the host. read more

One of my favorite Chicago restaurants! We first heard about it as the winner in Chicago's ribfest and decided to check out the restaurant itself a few years ago. We've returned several times since then! The ribs are outstanding - they are so tender that they fall off the bone. The Guinness orange barbecue sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. They're served with fries and an extra side of the sauce. I also love to get the Mac & cheese on the side, it has crispy breadcrumbs on top and it goes great with the barbecue sauce! On the weekend they have a roast (today it was sirloin) with mashed peas and potatoes. I also really love the onion soup! Service is always great and there is never a long wait. read more

Saturday brunch on Memorial Day weekend. There was a soccer match on. Thank goodness someone thought of making a reservation. While their brunch menu is limited it has some great options. Irish breakfast items are plentiful. And, they have a small selection of lunch items. Black and White puddings, Irish Bacon, Bangers, the whole lot. I was boring with my order and had a hamburger. This was no simple hamburger - at least 1/2 pound on a Pretzel bun, fresh vegetables, and enough fries for a horse. There was no way I could finish it. The service was very good. If you can find street parking, this is a nice place to visit. They have a store inside the bar, and it's big enough inside to accommodate many people. They don't pack you in elbow to elbow. My friends and I stopped here for a quick bite after my night class. I like the place because it had a bar/hippie feel to it. And since we were there later at night, it wasn't crowded. So, not really sure how busy they get. Our server was great. He was nice enough to accept a picture of my ID since I forgot it. I had their drink that was like the Irish Mule and it is one of the best drinks I've had. I also like pretty girly drinks and sweet, so in case you like that. Everything we had was amazing! I don't particularly like Shepard's pie but something about the taste, consistency, and right mixture of meat and vegetables made it perfect for me! It was mouth-watering! The corned beef was also great but I am used to mashed corned beef. Although, it was tender and juicy. I really did love everything. The fries was crispy and not too salty either. Well it was my sister's friends birthday today and my belated (July 7) and I and her friend as well as my family, relatives and her friends celebrated with Irish cuisine. Very good. It had both famous traditional entrees and some not so popular Irish dishes. We as a group appetizer ordered the fried pickles. I have had fried pickles before back in 2019 in Memphis Tennessee at a famous place called Marlow's and I had to try taste and compare. It was unique and delicious. It was presented more like a potato chip which was crispy and season with a dill dip. That is why I said it was unique. Marlow's had it deep fried in batter which was delicious also but cooked and prepared differently. Marlow's cooked their version like an onion ring and was temperature hot in the pickle while sinking your teeth. Murphy's was not temperature piping hot and felt like eating a sweet, fresh seasoned potato chip. I had a potato leek soup afterwards which was also delicious. The texture of the soup was refined and had the taste of eating a refined mash potatoe with a hint of onion leaves or leeks. Glad I made that order. The main entree I had instead of your traditional corn beef and cabbage was bangers and mash. It was Irish sausage (bangers) with mash potatoes and surprisingly Dijon mustard on the side as a garnish. Again it was delicious and unique. The sausage texture wise was very soft and refine. With the mash potatoes to complement the taste. The bangers taste similar to a bratwurst but much more flavorful and texture was more soft and not juicy like a bratwurst. Then desert came with a bread pudding which smelled similar to a cinnabon but tasty and had a walnut flavor. Also serve hot not room temperature. It was good. I also had an amaretto Stone sour which was good in which they had a cherry as a garnish that had a unique refine texture. All in all it was good times. Four out of five stars because it seemed that despite somewhat big party when it came to the orders they were slow on some other people's orders in our party but were quick with others.
