He allowed the cheating team to come in first place having no wrong answers and collect a pretty substantial prize. I asked if they could host a private Virtual Trivia Event for a non-profit fundraiser that I was running. Dan Burns was tremendously helpful in helping figure out the details. He presented several options for what I wanted to do and helped me to pick the best option based on my needs and what information I had available for him. He had everything set up and their virtual format for trivia is simple and easy to use/follow. Just played a Harry Potter trivia, our host was Chuck. Thought it was going to be a fun game but we noticed throughout the entire game the table next to us a girl would google search the questions as soon as they were asked. She would set her phone on the table and copy the answers from the internet on to the answers sheet. The other teams around us also noticed this and after seeing that other people felt it was a good idea I went up to tell our host that multiple teams saw her cheating. Normally I would never do this but since there was a Cash prize of $150 we thought it was only fair to stay honest. When I told our host he seemed almost annoyed with me bringing it up and just dismissed me. He didn't do anything about it and the team continued to cheat. The team came in first with a perfect score and won the cash. Seeing as how the team that cheated and won were being so obvious about it makes me think that Chuck knew and didn't care. Possibly splitting the prize money... Definitely not ever playing trivia with this company again and wouldn't suggest it to anyone else since they use the "prize money" to lure people in only for all the teams to stand no chance. In fact I'd tell people to avoid this one because of the false advertising of the prize. Really disappointed, even worse there were kids playing who just wanted to have a good time too and saw that the way to win was by cheating. read more

Trivia Dan who runs that night is the best. Very engaging with the crowd and main purpose is to have an awesome trivia each night. The trivia is challenging and relevant for most age groups. The questions never get stale and have almost never seen repeats and I have gone to many different bars to play. I love that the company utilizes the TV's at bars to display questions. I've been attending trivia hosted by Whaddayaknow for almost four years. Whenever I go somewhere else for trivia--here in Chicago or elsewhere--I really see the difference. Dan writes thoughtful questions that require teamwork and logic rather than questions like, "what's the capital of X." Recently, I booked him to customize a trivia set for a family reunion I was attending. Dan had everything taken care of and printed ready for my pickup on short notice. My friends and I have been playing competitive team triva around Chicago for many o' year and have often lamented not finding that perfect combination of nice ambiance, good food and a great trivia master. Then, we stumble upon Whaddayaknow Free Team Trivia (WFTT), which offers free team trivia at various bars around Chicago throughout the week. We generally play at the Logan Bar & Grill on Sunday nights and have hit a few other venues when we can't make Sunday work. The company is owned by this guy Dan who is such a nice guy with an amazing amount of energy. No wonder he's been able to rope his buddies in as trivia masters as well to keep his business growing. Dan has developed a great format for the game and does an excellent job coming up with questions that really make you think (and get irked with yourself when you should have known that!). My team SexyMonkeyFish made it to the Fall Tournament of Champions, which was hosted at Joe's, and while we were destined for mediocrity in the final standings we had a blast just as we do every Sunday night. If you enjoy a bit of competition on things of no earth-shattering importance pull together some friends and find a bar with WFTT. Whaddayaknow is the best trivia in Chicago, hands down. Dan is a great founder and leader of some of the toughest trivia I've known in Chicago. We've gone to Whaddayaknow trivia every Sunday at the Logan Bar for almost two years and we love it. The trivia is tough, the competition is pretty fierce and we always have a good time. There's trivia every night of the week somewhere in the city, so go try it out! They're all over, too: northside, southside, near west and now even the suburbs! I can tell you I seek out Whaddayaknow when I need my trivia fix (especially if we miss a week). There's a ton of places to chose from and it seems like they're always adding bars. They've also added two trivia tournaments per year at each bar. Teams can compete for 6-8 weeks to win spots at the Tournament of Champions in January and July each year. The Tournament of Champions is even harder trivia, so start studying geography and Oscar winners for the last 40 years. read more

In my knitting bag, I have three sweaters that are almost finished...except they are missing an arm. On my desk, I have two French language textbooks collecting dust. And let's not even talk about the year I trained for the marathon... I am telling you this so you know that something that keeps me coming back week after week, for almost 6 months, must be something pretty damn fun. And that is Team Trivia! Team Trivia is now at several locations around the north and northwest sides: Mondays: Cafe Fresco, Cubby Bear, Kincades, and Duffys. Tuesdays: ODonovans, Durkins, and Victory Liquors Wednesdays: Fiesta Mexicana and Bridget McNeils. I play at Fiesta Mexicana every week and it is such a blast. Amy and Jeff run the games and they are great emcees, even though they can sometimes be very, very tricky. The questions, IMO, are just hard enough. Its a very fine line between random, useless knowlege and "who the f**k would know that!" and the questions usually straddle that line perfectly. And they get harder as you go along, so just when you're feeling smug...BAM! They hit you up with "What is the capital of Uzbekistan?" So, if you're looking for something to do with all that random knowledge in your head, you should try out one of the Team Trivia games. Come to Fiesta and challenge us! read more
