If you're into yarn..this place has it all! I visited the Tea Cozy Yarn Shop for some yarn to crochet with. I had wanted to get back into something crafty and stopped by to check what they had, and boy was I pleasantly surprised! While looking for yarn, the owner was very knowledgeable and helpful with finding me the right yarn for my project. The shop stocks various types of yarn in different weights, colors, and styles. I opted to get some larger bundles of yarn for a blanket that I'm making. Before I left the owner helped me to ball the yarn so that it was easier to work with when I started. I was there an extra 15 minutes with the 3 colors, but it has made the process much easier and eliminated tangles. I will de definitely be back to stock up! read more

This was such a charming little store! They had tons of great yarns on sale to make way for fall yarns. The staff that was on hand was this lovely woman who clearly has knitted all her life. She was super patient while I was there and was teaching a gal how to knit a sweater. The store is definitely on the smaller side but it isn't packed full and doesn't feel claustrophobic. If I lived nearby, I would definitely be in here all the time knitting. What they lack in quantity of yarn, they make up in quality of the brands and top notch service! read more

This place is so charming and filled with beautiful yarn. I am new to crocheting so I can't give loads of details on type etc. However, I can tell you this is high end yarn and you'll be paying a pretty penny for it. I advise stopping in for some of your more elegant pieces. I dropped in to grab pink for the #pussyhatproject and the yarn was SO expensive compared to what I picked up at competitors. It was at least triple what I got at other places. C'est la vie. As long as your wallet can afford it, do it. There is street parking on 24th. The shop itself is small and quiet. Bring cash if possible, as they prefer it and the lady couldn't get their cc machine to work for us. She said it happens a lot. They aren't super friendly in there but maybe we just caught a bad day. The yarn is BEAUTIFUL though, and I love supporting shops in my neighborhood. I will be back for some yarn for fancy projects. read more

Lots of soft yarn, super nice staff, on the spendier side, and I would describe the shop as "cozy elegance." I both loved it and felt a bit out-of-place simultaneously. On the one hand, if I were to go back when it was raining it's the type of store that would prefer you to use an umbrella before coming in, instead of just wearing a raincoat. On the other hand, the lighting was in fact soft, and the carpet was more than happy to be sat on while poring through ravelry patterns to make sure you have enough for the project you want to do. Definitely will go back; I bought some lovely baby alpaca that is going to make a delightful infinity shawl. read more

I found Yelper, Amanda's, earlier comment to be spot-on. Jean was off-putting, if not rude, the two times I've been into the store. She was dismissive and aloof, treating me as if MY head were in the clouds. She isn't very communicative and it's too bad, because this shop is so close to home and full of beautiful products! I am glad to read it wasn't just me though. I wasn't sure if this was a personal attack, like it felt, since she greeted other familiar customers warmly. Why not me?! I went into this shop because I was crocheting a blanket and it didn't look right. It was my first time there, I was going to the class they have there where they can help with projects. I got out of work late and got there practically at closing and they still went out of their way to help me! They were so kind. If you want to support a local, small, shop this is the one to go to. I've been trying to make my way to different LYS-es every time I'm at home, and today I went to this lovely shop in Ballard. I initially ventured out to buy a pair of fixed Hiya Hiya sharps, and the HH America website listed this shop as a local retailer. When I got there though, their HH selection was pretty slim, and they didn't have them in the size/length I was looking for. It wasn't a huge deal breaker for me, so I didn't let it affect my impression of the shop. They have a great selection of yarn, including most of the madelinetosh line. Their prices also seemed on point with other shops I frequent in the Seattle area. Ended up buying a couple skeins - the employee working at the time was really nice and helpful, and wound one of my skeins before letting me do the last one as she helped another customer. I didn't mind - winding is one of my favorite parts of starting a new project, and it was my first time using a Stanwood winder (which I'm now in love with!). All in all, a nice shop. Probably won't be back too often, as it's a little further for me to venture out to and the parking is not easy to find, but I had a good experience here. read more

I love having a yarn shop just a few blocks from my house. The selection is somewhat humble but it's all good quality stuff (animal fiber). I go thorough a monstrous quantity of wool (I knit over 100 items for Wool-Aid each year) so I'm sorry to say I don't buy much at full yarn shop prices, but I stop by here a lot for needles. They have an awesome needle selection and carry several lines from high-end (Addi) to bargain basement (Prym) and in-between (KA). Circs, dpns, bamboo, metal...they've got it all. Well, can't remember if they carry Lantern Moon or not but I'll look next time. The staff is super helpful and knowledgeable and I love the nice table by the front window for sit & knit. I haven't ever sat & knit there but maybe someday I will be tempted. I would be interested to know if they have a weekly charity knitting group - I'd be all over that. I just can't quite give five stars because: 1) Parking can be tough. Sometimes I want to stop in and don't simply because I can't find a place to park; 2) Selection needs to be a tad better, particularly sock wool; and 3) No sales or clearance bins or anything to tempt us charity knitters who consume tons of wool and will buy less desirable wool for the price-break. It's not a "destination" yarn shop that I would recommend tourists visit, but it's a wonderful LYS that has all the staples (and some luxuries) just a few blocks from home. read more

Very cute shop, the woman behind the counter (I'm assuming the owner) was very nice and friendly. I'm a fan of funky chunky types of yarn, and I was able to pick up a couple skeins. The handmade buttons they had for sale were great! (I had to contain myself). I would come back if I was planning on making something for a baby/child...but as far a selection of yarns for myself, I found the prices a tad high and the variety not too great. read more

Yay, a new yarn store! I took a good long look through their inventory, something I easily spend too much time doing at many a yarn store. Saw a few things I wanted, but couldn't make a decision. Looked for similar yarns other places since then, and DIDN'T FIND them! So that means... this place has a few of the regular staples, but a good assortment of stuff you won't necessarily find at any old yarn store. Great selection of colors and textures, even though their space is not that large. They've packed some good choices into that little place. So I'm going back to get that orange tweed and that super bulky alpaca. I only wish they would post their hours online. I biked over there and found that their hours are a little later on some days and normal on other days... can't remember which is which. Sure wish it was listed here. read more

Just happened upon this new yarn shop this morning. So excited to find a new yarn shop in Ballard. The yarn and needle selection is great, having a great variety of fibers and unique colors, many unique from other shops in the area. The owner, Jean, was very friendly and welcoming, and we shared stories of our families and our passion for knitting during my brief visit. There are two large tables just asking for a few friends to get together for knitting and conversation. I called my girlfriend up right away and we're meeting there later this afternoon for a cup of tea. read more

Absolutely the best yarn shop in the city! They have the most beautiful yarn including Madelinetosh and Malabrigo in all different weights. The staff was super friendly and helpful and there was a little knitting group going on at the back of the store. I was looking for a pattern for a poncho and it turns out the owner had written a pattern and created the piece to display in the store. She let me try it on and I fell in love. After I bought my yarn for my poncho it started getting busy so the employee asked me if I would like to spin my own yarn. I had never done that before and it was pretty fun! I am so glad I live nearby! I will visit for all of my knitting and crochet needs. read more

Love this place! I reviewed it several years ago and I'm back to add a bit more. As a native,(and current) Buffalonian, I take my knitting seriously! The Tea Cozy is aptly named as the staff is not only warm and welcoming but they actually serve you tea! In pretty porcelain cups! They are very knowledgeable and willing to assist with yarn and needle recommendations. I especially appreciate Patricia. She is a gentle-natured soul full of knitting knowledge and wisdom. This is my favorite LYS in the Seattle area. I used to work a few blocks away and would walk down from Fremont. They have the largest selection of Knitters Pride Dreamz needles I've ever seen! The owner didn't have an issue when I needed to return a circular size 2 needle due to it catching my yarn...didn't even give me an odd look. She always remembered me too, maybe not my name but she knew who I was. Some of her staff are not real nice. But overall, good selection of yarns. I'm so fortunate to have this store in my neighborhood! They have beautiful yarns and a great selection of patterns for ideas. The group projects are a great way to challenge yourself to take on a more complicated project. And the staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I had a disaster in my current project and the owner and one of the other team members truly rescued me; they helped fix my massive mistakes and I'm back on my way! Since I have picked up crochet again I was excited to find this place not too far from my house. I asked my wife to bring my 8 month old baby and meet me close so we can go check it out together. When we walked in I saw a nice small shop with a decent selection, the prices were a little high, but what do you expect from a small boutique? When we told her that I was just looking at yarn for my crochet projects I got a look, but I sort of expect it, there's not a lot of 30 something black males who crochet. I immediately found something I liked and grabbed 3 balls of that yarn. I carried it around while my wife and I continued to looked around and debate. While we were looking around the lady in charge made strange little comments that I thought nothing of like "I'm not watching you, I just need to go back here" as she walked to the back of the store. I could care less about silly comments like that. After decided to put them back to check another local yarn shop, I went to her and said "I have to check something else and we will be back". When I said that she immediately asked me what I did with the yarn I was carrying. I told her I put it back where I got it from. She went directly to it and pulled them out to make sure they were all there! After she saw them all there she "dismissed" us. We didn't have any bags, nor were we wearing coats, we didn't even have the stroller because we parked right in front and it was a small shop. Even as we were walking out she followed us out the door with the comment "I'm not following you, I just want to get this sign". I spent the next 10 minutes walking around Ballard with my wife and baby trying to rationalize the words and actions of this lady. Being raised in a very diverse suburb of Chicago and having a huge family of in-laws in "middle of nowhere" Illinois I am used to being the only person of color in a crowd, it doesn't bother me. But sometimes when it is so obvious and in front of my face I have no choice but to acknowledge it and it angers me. I guess if I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt I can imagine that she treats everyone who comes in her shop like that?!?!?! But if that's true, I would think that shop shouldn't still be around. I will never go back to that place. In fact, I created this Yelp account just to leave this review. read more

I stopped in here during the LYS yarn shop hop, which was the same day as the Norwegian Day Parade. So, there were lots of people in the store that day. Although the staff were busy, there were still plenty of people on hand, seeing if I needed help, helping me find things, making sure I got my LYS patterns and passport without me even asking. The yarn selection is beautiful, with some unusual brands and a nice selection of higher-end yarns (madelinetosh, etc). At the front they had a large bowl of mini-skeins of a local yarn, along with a pattern for a cute striped hat, to give you the idea. I found a great crochet pattern book. This shop has only been here for a month but it has everything a knitter (and other needle crafters) could need! The store is comfortable and open, allowing you to browse and pet the fibers without feeling pressured to buy. The yarn is organized thoughtfully, making it easy to find the brands you're familiar with but also see new, similar yarns at the same time. I was pleased to see that they had yarns that were reasonably priced and ranged from Cascade 220 to Malabrigo. I can't wait to start another project so I can drop by again! read more

Seattle is a great place for yarn, and if I am staying in the city limits, this is my favorite place for it. The store is small, but stuffed with fantastic and well-curated yarn -- plenty of popular national brands (Madelinetosh, Malabrigo) as well as some harder-to-find PNW varieties (Bumblebirch, one of my favorites). The front table always has the newest pattern books, and there are patterns and samples around the store that inspire. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the yarn and pattern selections are good for both old-school knitters and more modern hobbyists. read more
