Hey since I been here an HOUR waiting on a table that was promised in 30 minutes I may as well write a review. Its Friday night and busy of course. We used to eat here all the time and I never remember a wait this long. We have checked in 3 times which doesnt seem excessive enough to get black balled on getting a table. I checked online for reservations and the website said nothing about taking reservations. They didnt show up on open table either. Maybe its my fault but a perfect meal at this point will not convince me to ever come back. Total time to get the table was hour an 15 minutes. I have been to a lot of Japanese Steakhouses and was overly impressed with Stix. The food was fresh & delicious. They had three sections Habachi, booths & sushi bar. The customer service was excellent. I found the portion sizes were extremely generous for the price. It was very stylish the restaurant was unlike many dated Japanese Steakhouses. read more

It was bad customer service. One of the workers was digging up her nose and touching other workers. Some of the workers had attitudes.

TERRIBLE service. The hostess has no idea what she was doing. I made a reservation only to still have to wait a normal wait time to be seated. Don't bother asking for a manager when the hostess doesn't pay any attention to you she will simply talk over you and not answer any of your concerns/questions then walk away and leave you talking to yourself! I'm going straight to corporate with her. Completely unacceptable. Once finally seated, there's no room to move or talk! You won't be able to communicate with anybody in your party over everybody else's conversations in the same room as you! And did i mention there was a fight? BETWEEN THE EMPLOYEES!!! I could not eat anything we bought except the rice. The vegetables were steamed, not fried like you see in the photos and even though I mentioned I want the meat well done it was rare. Everything had a sweet sauce on it I could not even finish the soup. It's the first asian restaurant where the hot and sour soup had parsley in it which gave it a bad taste. After I took the first bite I felt really bad for spending so much money. read more

This is our favorite upscale Asian restaurant in town. We love the teriyaki chicken - I get double veggies and my husband gets double rice. Their sushi is really great too. Expect to pay a little more, but in my opinion it's always worth it. read more

Stix always came to my rescue during my 5 years living in the abomination of a state they call Alabama. I found this place after leaving the Galleria one day and all I saw was "SUSHI". If anyone has ever been to Alabama, sushi restaurants (or any other remote sign of culture), are not a common occurrence. Its a typical 1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Japanese Steakhouse type of spot. I never ate on the hibachi side, as I'm not a huge fan of eating a meal with a group of people (especially from Alabama) that I don't know. Most of the times I came here I with with someone who didn't eat sushi, so the Chinese side allowed them to eat their typical Chinese fare, while I indulged in my fish and rice smorgasbord. I have to say, although they are nothing atypical from any other mid-level Japanese place, the sushi was always fresh and the sizes of fish were amazing. The Chinese look pretty good too--not overly breaded as some places are. The calamari was surprisingly always good as well. The service was always soooo friendly...I always got the same waiter...George...every time. And he always called me Alicia Keys, which is a compliment, even though I look nothing like her. It definitely got pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights, but always worth the wait when I was craving me some sushi! Had been a while since we dropped by here, as we are not in Hoover all that often. I haven't eaten at the hibachi side at this location, so can't vouch for that. I do like some of their sushi, but have never been too impressed with the entrees. This time, we had one of their "specialty" dishes, which was lightly breaded and fried chicken in a chili sauce. I can say that it was just OK...definitely nothing to write home about. The cocktails that we tried were quite tasty, and reasonably priced. I know the Fultondale location has a really good happy hour, with some half priced appetizers and drink specials, but not sure if this location does or not. All in all just an OK place. read more

Writing this review on the experience I had tonight.. because it always seems to vary. Tonight was great. We sat at the bar and ordered the shrimp fried rice, crab wontons, California roll, and Philadelphia roll. The food came out super quick and tasted freshly cooked. Not to mention the server/ bartender was great! She got me a to go cup and to go box! The only reason I give it a 4 is because I feel the service should not differentiate so much between visits. read more

First visit to Stix and I was disappointed. I was pretty busy, but tables were turned quickly. Most of the service was good and efficient, however, our server was not very friendly. Perhaps she was having a bad day. However, she was prompt and efficient. The Chef put on a nice show, but the rice wasn't cooked well or seasoned well. I chose the steak instead of my usual filet and it was a horrible cut. The shrimp was over cooked and tuff. The chicken was done well enough. He was pleasant and I enjoyed his presentation. We had Bang Bang Chicken and Wanton appetizers which were really good. The soup and salad were average. Hopefully, we just picked a bad night to visit. read more

We visited for my birthday and were very satisfied with not only the amazing performance put on by our chef but by the quality of the food as well. Very good experience. We went on a Tuesday night and had reservations for 6pm, but didn't really need them. The place filled up as the evening wore on, though. One of the weirdest dining experiences in my life. Tonight. December 29th, 2015. We were a party of nine and had a 6:30pm reservation on the non-hibachi side of the restaurant. Our server was a woman in her mid fifties maybe? She was so curt, rude, etc, that our ordering process was TERRIFYING. I was scared of her. She had an air of superiority about her that basically said "you are beneath me, you should feel glad I'm even lowering myself to be your server." You'd think we walked into that restaurant wearing cut off t shirts and dirty flip flops and not dressed cute (we all looked adorable. We aren't animals). We had a group of nine and we asked if we could split the check. She said fine. EDIT: We asked to split the check before anyone ordered, AND we sat directly across from the person we were paired with -- it was very easy to split up, and we were clear that if she could not split the check, we were happy to manage it otherwise. A good number of us have worked in food service at some point in our lives and we strive to be good customers. She walked to the front of the table and was very much no nonsense. She dictated the exact way we were to order. She stood at the head of the table and refused to move around and speak to us, and forced us to yell down the table at her and tell her our order. My brother politely asked if she didn't mind coming down to his end of the table so he could ask her a couple of questions but she yelled at him that she would NOT do that. So he had to yell down the table. She was bizarre, so so so rude, then went away. No checking on us. We had to request water refills. Thankfully there was a very kind busboy who helped us out. We slipped him some cash on the side as a thank you. He was fantastic. The food was phenomenal. It was delicious!!!!!!! So that's the sad part. Like -- this could have been such an awesome dinner! But we were so scared and off out by her that it really cramped the whole thing. Of course they added gratuity (I expect that with a big group) and it was 18%. I never just leave it at 18, as I prefer to tip 20-25% (servers have to make a living and I firmly believe that tipping is necessary, even with mediocre service). But I sure as heck did not add any extra tonight. Sadly she still made a killing since I'm pretty sure our collective total exceeded $500. Anyhow, makes for a good story. If you can handle feeling like you're in that Seinfeld episode with the crazy mean soup guy, then head on over. Give it a shot. The food is great. read more

My group had a lunch reservation for 14 at this restaurant. The restaurant lost the reservation. We kept being told they were "setting up tables". There was no sense of urgency or customer service! A whole section was available but we were not placed there. After a wait of 25 minutes we left and were seated immediately at a nearby restaurant. Stix lost a $400 lunch payment and future patronage. My husband, son, and I don't eat out often. In the past Stix had been one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate special occasions. It was our anniversary, my birthday, and Father's Day all rolled into one. Immediately upon being seated we noticed the table, plates, and around the hibachi grill were dirty (even had old food left behind ). We contemplated leaving but regretfully decided to stay. The waitress was friendly and we placed our order. We ordered sushi and our meal. When the sushi was served I knew right away something was off. The tempura was gritty and greasy and really gross. When the hibachi chef put the rice on the grill, again I knew something was off. The rice is usually white and as they cook it and add the sauces it turns brown and flavorful. This rice had no peas,carrots, or beans in it. It was very bland and greasy. The meat and vegetables were good so no complaints there. But let's face it we go to stix for the rice. The chef did the bare minimum when it comes to entertainment while cooking so that too was a huge disappointment. Our bill totaled $160 and as soon as the chef left we were hurried up by the staff as if we were expected to leave since the chef was finished cooking. I hate we paid that much for a meal and had it been just my husband and me I would have complained to the manager but my son begged me "not to be a Karen" We won't be back anytime soon...if ever read more

We had reservations for 7:20PM. Was told it would be 15-20 minutes, so my party and I went to the bar. Stood at the bar for 15 minutes and got passed over twice as other customers who hadn't been there nearly as long got served. After 30 minutes we were finally seated. Food was great... Until the chicken that was supposed to come with my chicken and scallops never came. Finally my chicken came with the check, cold from sitting around in the kitchen. My ticket was discounted $4.99, but I will still never return nor recommend. The food simply was not good enough to make up for the terrible service. read more

Meh. Stix is mediocre at best. The meal started with a salad as usual; however the dressing was more like soup poured over some lettuce. It was not the traditional ginger dressing served on a salad at a Japanese steak house. The chef went through the usual routine of cooking the food but was not interactive at all. The typical "back and forth" one finds at a place like this was noticeably absent. The food, once served, was very salty and over cooked.
