I ordered a Turtle ice cream pie last week while I was in town from Florida to celebrate my dad's birthday. It was the most amazing dessert ever!! I called them as well to say how spectacular it was and everyone raved about it!! She was a little nervous about adding fudge into it versus chocolate syrup as fear of melting the custard but the fudge added a special flavor! My dad's milk shake, he ordered a large, was enormous. My mom had a sherbet which was delicious. I love that the quality and the prices remain so consistent over the years. Like 15 years ago I convinced my parents to get me a large chocolate milkshake here. If you have ever tried one they are massive. More than twice the regular sized ones. Needless to say I consumed it all and vomited in my parents car. Like 15 years later I went back here expecting it to be long closed but it's still here with the massive milkshakes. So I ordered the same thing again and this time kept it down. I did feel like I was going to burst like a balloon but no regrets. What the heck happened to this place!??? Where to start....1st, I've been coming here a few times a year for 20 years. June 4th 2022 was our 1st time of the season this year. It was a beautiful warm Saturday night. We passed a few other local owned ice cream/custard places coming here that were all packed with people. This place USE TO be packed! there were 2 sets of people in front of us. That's it. So with us that's 6 people in line. There was a sign that said, because of understaff service may be slower. Well let me tell you, I counted SIX employees! It looked to be staffed about the same as I always remembered! However everyone seemed to be moving in super slowwwww motion, it was odd. I saw a couple older woman working the back filling orders looking like owners maybe but also looking confused. All employees STILL were being made to wear masks even tho that's been lifted like 6 months ago and all other businesses and life in general has gone back to normal except this place. I wouldn't work here either if they are still forcing workers to wear them! But still, SIX employees, you'd think could serve the SIX people in line fairly quickly, but that was not the case. Service was faster when it was busier and had less employees back in the day! The set up is weird now. You use to go in and up to a window to order and pay directly to a server. Now they do so many extra steps for what I'm not sure. They closed the inside and added windows to that part, so now there's 2 employees just walking back and forth in the covered section taking our orders at one window and then giving them to the 4 other employees inside at the other window. Also, they haven't even moved a cash register to the window we order from, so the worker at our window takes your money, puts it on a tray and also gives that with your order to the other window inside. So we waited 20 minutes for our simple order and to get our change back!! 20 minutes!! Not just that, but we ordered what we always did, the only thing is, I asked for extra crunchy sprinkles on my small vanilla cone. To which she told me the extra sprinkles will be served in a bowl. Fine i thought, I can add my own extra. Well not only did my custard NOT COME ON A CONE LIKE I ORDERED, but there were NO EXTRA CRUNCHY SPRINKLES! The girl who took our order just looked at me and said 'oh, sorry...' in a slow bewildered way. She's like in her late 20's, maybe everyone there oxygen deprived so working slower and seemingly spaced out, I don't know. Besides my small vanilla cone which now was just a child sized looking portion in a cup with few crunchy things on it, my spouse ordered a small vanilla flurry with Oreos in it. It literally had a few Oreo crumbles mixed in on the top and the bottom half was just vanilla custard... we paid $10.15 for these 2 tiny not made well or to our order! I even looked at it when they handed it to us and I said out loud, 'I paid $10 for this!!!!!????" Then I added "so sad, we will NEVER be coming back here again!" Now we know why there were only 2 sets of people infront of us on a beautiful warm June evening. This place won't be around much longer...NEO has so many awesome local owned ice cream/custard places that aren't charging super inflated prices and with good service. Don't bother with this place. Frozen? Most definitely not. We ordered a frozen custard and a bowl of hard ice cream. Both were mushy and dripping, definitely not frozen. Immediately pointed this out to the server who responded with a shrug. Temperature was in the mid 70s and the crowd was light so neither of those was a factor. Won't be back. read more

Stoddard's is a Kent, OH staple. The place has been around for over 60 years, and they're still going strong. I'm not generally a big fan of custard. It's a bit too sweet and too heavy for my liking. However, on a hot summer's day, Stoddard's is a great reprieve. I usually only go when their flavor of the day is appealing (I almost always go when they offer either peanut butter or pumpkin). Vanilla is a good standby when I find myself there on a random occasion. If you're a custard fan, you're likely to love this place, but their frozen yogurt (not the tart kind) and their hard ice cream are nothing special. As another reviewer mentioned, seating is limited, but I've never actually seen the place completely packed. Unlike another reviewer, I have never had a problem with rude employees. YUCK! If you're the owner of this place, you should read this review and other recent ones. This place is a MAJOR disappointment. The prices are too high for a large cone (and maybe some other items), and the quality is terrible. I was across the street at Klaben's Chrysler getting my car repaired. I saw Stoddard's and walked over to get a large soft serve cone. BIG MISTAKE. First of all, HUGE RIPOFF. 4.75 for a large cone that is actually about half the amount of ice cream they give you at my local ice cream place here in Norton -- and they only charge 3.75. And the ice cream is awesome at my local place. NOT HERE. IT'S AWFUL. Second, it isn't actually soft serve. It's some sort of melted hard ice cream and it was terrible. Third, you charge 4.75 for a large cone but 4.25 for an entire sundae? WTF?????????????????????? I'm sorry, but this place sucks and I would never, ever go back. I love Stoddard's fruit flavors of the day, my favorites being blueberry or black raspberry. I believe fresh fruit is used, making these custards less artificial tasting and less sweet, which is great. The prices are a bit high and their location is terrible, but I'd still choose this place over the nearby Handel's any day due to the taste. However, I almost stopped coming here due to the poor service. I remember I had a gift card 2 years ago and the girl not only didn't accept the card but after I paid with my credit card, she discovered she did charge the gift card and wouldn't refund my money. I would have been fine with cash back, another gift card, re-crediting to my credit, etc. but she just kept saying it wasn't possible - until I got the store owner involved. I've been torn between giving this place 5 stars because of the custard and my husband's family's long standing loyalty vs. giving it 1 star due to their decreasing quality over the years and repeated poor service. I've settled on 3 stars until I can find a local place closer to home, but I would love to see this place improve and get back to the status they were before. read more

This place has been a staple of the West Side of Kent for years. I've been coming here for over 35 years. Hands down my favorite place to get frozen custard. I would choose this over any corporate ice cream shop any day of the week. Family owned and operated. The only downfall is, they only have my favorite flavor (vanilla malt) one day a year. But if you miss your favorite flavor, you can buy a pint for at least a few days afterwards if they have leftover stock. Make sure to ask for extra napkins! read more

I've enjoyed good custard here, but several service missteps. On my last visit they had to make a simple vanilla cone three times as they kept dropping it. But here's the thing, I ask for a vanilla cone, then dipped into a dish. So all they really have to do is pour custard into a dish, then put a cone on top of it. Problem is you can't tell them this, because they have to close the little window after taking your order. They don't re-open the window again until they deliver your order. If I recall correctly, parking is still a gravel lot, and the building is nothing to write home about. They do have a wonderful collection of family and customer photos all over the walls, and they promote their decades of serving great custard to the community. Look, I know it's tough to find good help, but a little training or re-visiting of previous training couldn't hurt. With better service, every review has the potential of being 5-stars! read more

The employees didn't seem to have a good process in place for getting the orders made - almost as if they were all new hires. The size was fairly small. A medium looked like a small to me. The price was fair, considering the sizes. $10 for a medium and small in cones and a baby in a dish. The soft serve was very good- rich, creamy. The dip was fairly average. Not great. I would go back for the soft serve, but definitely order up on the size. read more

My wife and I went to Stoddards many times before, and it was really good. This time we went was the worst excuse for custard I ever had. We both got the flavor of the day which was strawberry.
