Jake has taken me climbing several times--both sport and trad--and he's great. Very knowledgable and friendly, I highly recommend.

It was my family's last week here in the US, and we've been climbing here for the last two summers…read morewith little issue. The staff *before* was quite friendly. I've been/was climbing for 7 years and have a good amount of belaying experience. Further, the routes are not very inclusive in terms of height at higher V levels, and do not contain as much variety. The lead/top rope walls are extremely short and barely qualify, around 15m tall. You would be better off going to Sender One in Westwood, that has a BIG variety of problems from competition to fun dynamic routes, finger strength heavy, slabs, and more (excuse my horrible description). The test was unnecessarily difficult in the sense that they need you to "describe" the knot as some "parallel lines" rather than acknowledging being able to tie it properly, due to some language barriers which prevented me from describing it properly. They only accept the "PBUS" belaying during the test, and disregards what they call the "Yosemite belaying method," which they allegedly only use outdoors?? They do not specify beforehand what sort of belaying method they wanted, and provided little information as to why when asked "we just do it that way". It is also odd because a more experienced employee has and had accepted the other format. Inconsistent. I have also been able to get the belaying license the first time round (2 years ago) using the "Yosemite belaying method." This method is the most widespread in Asia, with all belayers (coaches, climbers/friends) alike uses it. They do have a kilter board?, which can be interesting as you have access to an unlimited amount of routes which I don't see often in other gyms. There's some sort of small gym upstairs with weights, cardio equipment, and space for recovery which is convenient and comfortable to use. Bathrooms are always clean and spacious which is nice.

There are some spots reserved for Rockreation, but it wasn't clear whether it was staff or anyone could use it. Upon walking in, the staff welcomed me and directed me to waivers - the usual. Afterwards, there wasn't much of an introduction, though I wish there was. I started bouldering on one of the walls until I felt uncomfortable... it was in fact a little higher than normal. Turns out, that one is for ropes! On the topic of ropes, there are many options to climb with ropes. I navigated to bouldering, since that was my preference. The grades are a little different with some translation into V#. Pros of this? You feel less discouraged by climbs that may be hard while respecting ones that may look easy. Cons? The tags were super hard to find! Where they the small circles? The tape? There was a giant boulder in the middle of the bouldering section that was also fairly stacked with holds but not really set. Overall, I have to admit that I was underwhelmed with the bouldering options, and it is definitely one of the smaller bouldering gyms that I've been to. They do have a nice upstairs workout area, though!

TLDR: Informative website, small climbing gym (no top rope), easy access 8am - 5pm. After 5pm,…read moreparking may cost money. Friendly staff, active events calendar and best of all, CLEAN! - - - - - - I've been waiting to check out this Sender One location; my first ever visit (with 5-Punch Pass) was the Playa Vista Location, and the Westwood one feels slightly smaller in comparison. Give the recent fires, I am very grateful that they were able to extend my pass for a few weeks. At the time of visit, I wished that I could have gotten a tour of the facilities being a first-time visitor. Finding the restroom took a while as I was not expecting a gender-inclusive restroom. It's not a large location, but the orange walls make it easy to get lost. There's also a small room with a few pieces of gym equipment. What's impressive is how CLEAN the entire facilities is, which in my opinion is difficult for climbing gyms in general. As mentioned, the Westwood location is a rather smaller one. Neither hits nor the Playa Vista location had belay and rope, only bouldering. The grading here was fairly diverse, though it did not feel there were too many routes compared to Hangar 18. A Saturday morning before noon felt rather quiet, but noticeably more people startled trickling in around noon. Like most gyms, there is an events calendar, and I really enjoyed the different group events that are offered. I really wished that there would have been closer parking, though - and free or options with validation. Their website lists many locations, but most of them will come at a premium in the evening.

First time visitor to the brand new Westwood Sender One!! It has over 100 bouldering routes that…read moreare updated regularly and range from V0 to V12 I believe. Great routes for beginners and advanced climbers. Be sure to come in March to get the 5 visit punch pass for $59!! A great deal!! Otherwise, you can buy a day pass for around $35 or a membership, ranging from $89 for students to $100+ for regular members. Check their website for the most accurate pricing. They have bouldering classes as well as an entire yoga studio for personal use or classes. They also have a small fitness room with weights. Being a brand new space, it's super clean and beautifully organized. Lots of cubbies to store your stuff or you can use their lockers for free if you bring your own lock. Gender neutral restrooms and showers are available. Merch is also for sale. Rental gear comes with your pass but you can also bring your own stuff. The best part? The staff!!! I was greeted by Hannah who gave me a personal tour of the facility and recommended beginner routes to me. She remembered my name and would check in throughout the visit to see how it was going. Super nice!! If you want to save time, fill out their waiver in advance. You will also need to fill out an orientation form if it's your first time. I'm excited to get the most out of my 5 punch pass, which lasts 2 months! Only suggestion is I wish they would offer cheaper day passes for students or EBT card holders similar to how Cliffs of Id charges $10/day for EBT card holders. The membership allows you to visit all Sender One gyms - which is great if you can get there. However for many college students without cars I think there would be a lot of interest in a Westwood Only membership for a lower price. As someone who doesn't have a car, it is unlikely that I'll be able to use the other Sender One gyms which limits me to this facility and makes the $89/month for just bouldering not as worthwhile. Something for management to consider!! I am also not sure what a "visit" entails; for a day pass, can you leave and come back? If so, that would definitely make it more worth the money (i.e. yoga class in the morning and climbing at night).

My family and I came to California from Chicago for vacation. I have 3 daughters, 11,9 and 7 and I…read morewas looking for someone to take us climbing/hiking. After a lot of digging around I found onrope. Prior to the trip I arranged 2 days of activities with Walter: Day one, was a 6 hour hike and climb in Malibu Creek State Park, the Day 2 was a 2-3 hour rock climb and rapell at Point Dunne. Walter was incredible on the phone. Our family is active but has limited experience in rock climbing. I told Water what I was looking to accomplish and he recommended both trips and said it would be perfect. From our conversations, I felt more than comfortable leaving it in his hands. Now that the the trip is wrapping up, I can say it was, without a doubt, the 2 best days we had in California. The trips were beautiful and challenging, but spending time and getting to know Walter was just as enjoyable. The 6 hour day one, started with a hike and then a low angle horizontal climb over water (harnessed in). All my girls LOVED that and were able to make it, thanks to Walter. After some more hiking and scrambling over rocks, we were lead to a climb with four levels of difficulty. Walter was patient, careful, genuine, and spent time helping all of us climb. Everyone climbed with my 11 year old taking one of the harder routes of the day to the top. My middle daughter climbed to the top of one of the runs, and my 6-year old made it about 1/2 way. Very cool to see. 2 days later we met at Point Dunne where we rappelled over 100 feet. Point Dunne was breathtaking. A cliff sitting right on the beach and overlooking the ocean. We all made the rappel down and 2 of us climbed up. Again, this was an incredible day. If you are thinking of climbing or hiking or rappelling and looking for someone, beginner to experienced, I strongly recommend onRope. Walter and his crew are truly remarkable. I feel so strongly about onRope, that if anyone has any questions, you can personally contact me at 773 562 5133.
